Ch. 4 – Useless?

As a baby I didn’t have much of a choice in what I was able to do so to pass the time I decided to use the sight skill to see the effects. At first, I thought there was no effect at all, but just after activating the skill, every single time I notice… a loose thread in a blanket… the difference in two seemingly equal wooden blocks… a splinter in my crib… so it wasn’t so useless after all… but what real life value could such a skill have? Could there actually be useless skills? Or is there a particular way to take advantage of such a skill?

The answer fell into my lap just like that, as I used the skill on a sign my father read. It had been to much for the language to be written in plain English as well. Well, been able to understand and speak was a very HUGE first step. And now, as I had known the words and their meaning, I was able to map all the strange symbols to their respective sounds.

DING

[SIGHT] skill has evolved your obtained knowledge into a skill!

New skill [LANGUAGE] obtained!

+3 [INT]

What… did… Evolved a skill? I had thought the [E] next to skill was meant as kind of grade going down from A… maybe I had stop thinking of this as a game and start realizing that this is real life. Game logic will not always apply. So, I must keep an open mind, but maintain a healthy skepticism. Maybe the [E] stands for “Evolving Skill”? I have no idea if I’m right, and no way of figuring it out for now. So I will think about this at a latter time.

I look at my new skill.

[LANGUAGE]

Level: 1

Rank: Normal

Description: You know perfectly how to write every sound and word of your native language to such extent that it has become a skill.

Cost: 0 MP

Cooldown: none

The first thing I notice is the obvious lack of letter next to the skill rank. So maybe having an extra letter is not a regular occurrence, and maybe there are other values aside from the [E].

“Here we are. The Temple of Genesis” I hear my father say.

The architecture looked mostly like any other Hollywood movie cathedral I ever watched, or some sort of approximation. We go up the steps and then wait as my father talks to a young man dressed in white and purple robes and beckons us to follow after him.

We go through very LONG corridor. Oh. It’s me and my baby perspective. Not used to it yet. At the end the corridor, on the right, we enter what looked like a shrine with a big slab of stone next to it. What was the golden light? Where was it shining from? I could swear the sun was on the opposite of the building and a window at this time of the morning could never come into the room as such an angle. The light hurt my eyes as I stared too long into it, but I activated the skill even if just for a second. There was a crystal at the source of the light! But he had not seen anything like that since arriving here. Maybe it was expensive and/or difficult to obtain or manufacture and hence regular people, like his family, couldn’t afford them and used oil lanterns or torches, like they did at home. Made sense. How long could that crystal go on for? Would it need to be recharged? What does it use as a source of power? Does it have a limited lifespan? Great! More unanswered questions.

The man near the shrine looked at us from head to toe as we approached. “A standard reading?”

At which my father nodded as he handed the balding ban in a similar white and purple robe a silver coin. “My oldest has just awakened. This will be his first reading.”

“May the light of Genesis guide you! Young man come forward and place your hand right hand on the stone.” As my brother approaches the slab and places his hand on its surface, the man goes towards the shrine and starts mumbling what seems like a prayer. After a few seconds the surface of the stone shines brightly for a second before going out and leaving the letters there clear as day:

[SWORDSMAN] Lv. 1

HP: 130

MP: 10

STR: 13

SPD: 10

INT: 9

Skills:

[SUMMON SWORD] Lv.1

This seems rather lacking in comparison to my status screen. No. The man mentioned before a “standard” reading. Maybe the rest of the information if available only if you paid extra.

I tried using my [SIGHT] on the Status Stone.

A flash of bright light. DING

Conditions for levelling up [SIGHT] skill have been met.

+2 [IMA]

[SIGHT]

Level: 2

Rank: Normal [E]

Description: No detail can escape your sight. You will be able to perfectly recall any scene seen while using this ability in clear detail.

Cost: 0 MP

Cooldown: none

WOW! That basically like a camera in your head. This can be very useful. I must give this a try. Also, my father made it seems as if you could only gain SP while levelling up for regular classes, but I’ve already gained SP twice. The first time when I got the [LANGUAGE] skill and the second part when I levelled up the [SIGHT] skill. Maybe that was the key to getting SP the [CLASSLESS] Class? Could it be that no one had figured this out before?

He had paid no attention to every said by the balding man and he was now biding them farewell. I hope I didn’t miss any important piece of information while locked in thought.

----------------------------------------

What he would come to realize later, was that he did indeed miss a very important piece of information. But that changed his life forever in more ways that you would ever imagine.

----------------------------------------

Back at home we had a simple but delicious dinner made by mother. My father and brother laughed and celebrated. Apparently, my brother had very good stats and having all but one stat below 10 made him outstanding and with such a high value for [INT] he might be able to learn magic a later switch to a magic swordsman class. With information I now have a standard against which to measure myself, at least against as far as 10-year-old boy stats. At least I didn’t have to worry about my [INT] and [IMA] stats for the foreseeable future so that leaves time to focus on the other ones. But he had not heard anyone talking about how to level up a class so far and that was bugging him a little. But he figured out he still had time as he was technically still a baby.
