60. Death (1)

Monsters. Monsters everywhere. They had killed the demon general, but there were still monsters everywhere, coming at them from all sides of the volcanic, smoke-choked landscape. Fast-moving slime oozing towards them over the rocks. Slobbering werewolves bounding on all fours. Hovering ghouls with glowing eyes popping out of nowhere and filling the air. Orcs, ogres, hornets, eagles, bats, spiders, scorpions, skeletons. It seemed to Horatio that every foul creature that Hell had ever conceived or twisted to serve the purposes of Brax was here, and they were all coming for him, coming for the party.

‘There’s too many of them!’ Horatio yelled over the noise of hundreds of roaring, barking and screeching monsters. ‘We need to find a way through them to get to the tower!’

‘You should not have come to assist me!’ said Alex. ‘On my own I was able to slip past most of the monsters undetected! But all together we’ve attracted their attention!’

‘But I had to come to assist you,’ said Tyler, ‘and they had to as well! We know leaving you on your own doesn’t work! There’s got to be another way!’

‘Split up!’ yelled Horatio. There were so many monsters, coming from all sides, that they weren’t going to be able to protect Alex unless they coordinated themselves. ‘Try to draw them away, and protect Alex from a different direction as he moves towards the tower! Ceres, Primus and Egea, you come with me in front of Alex! Wyvera, Ouzo, Silvia and Helen, you guard him from monsters coming that way!’ He gestured to their right flank. ‘Olivia, Ross and Ursula, you fend them off from over there!’ The left flank. ‘And Walter and Tyler, you guard the rear!’

They divided themselves up like this, each group taking the different side of a square that boxed in Alex. Horatio felt grateful that nobody had argued or questioned his orders. He was acting and speaking on reflex, taking charge of the situation because its desperateness called for it.

They began to move towards the tower again as a square with Alex at the centre.

Everything was going fine until another wave of the monsters reached them.

The first group to hit came from the direction of the tower, running into Horatio, Ceres, Primus and Egea.
