"Do you love your job? How are you spending your day today? Are you feeling happy and content today?"
These are three questions Mila sets for herself every day, hoping that her answers will be positive each day.
Yesterday, she renewed her work contract for another ten years. She truly loves her job.
At 7 o'clock in the morning, the alarm clock rings right on time. Mila abruptly sits up in bed.
Today is another sunny day, and the plants and flowers on the balcony are basking in the sunlight. After finishing breakfast, Mila also waters the plants on the balcony with the daily essential water, allowing them to drink and grow beautifully.
Arriving at the office building, the staff are already forming a long queue. Everyone is dressed in white work uniforms, lining up in an orderly fashion to enter the office building for work. They patiently wait for identity verification and to receive their work assignments – a routine they must follow every day.
Employees waiting to start work are gradually increasing, and the queue is getting longer. However, everyone remains very quiet, with no greetings or conversations taking place.
Because here, they don't know each other, they don't know names, each person has their own specific job responsibilities, and there is no need for interaction with other staff members.
This is a quite favorable work environment and atmosphere for Mila. Dealing with colleagues is something she is not good at. In the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) personality test, she is a definite introverted person.
Soon, it is Mila's turn. The system identifies her, hands her a file, and it's done. The process is quite swift and efficient.
She holds the file and walks out from the arched gate of identity verification and task assignment. The system then appears in front of her, creating and opening a door out of thin air. Without hesitation, she pushes the door open and walks in.
In the center of the pure white room, there is a massive golden cylinder, resembling an energy pool that extends endlessly upward and downward, with no visible end in either direction.
Upon entering the room, the machines on the ceiling automatically open, and three babies with pacifiers sit on a white rectangular platform, slowly descending from the ceiling.
On their clothes, the numbers 115, 189, and 328 are written respectively.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Mila happily approaches them and greets, "Hi, how are you? Are you 115, 189, and 328? Nice to meet you. Starting today, I'm your supervisor, and my name is Mila."
She forms her hand into a fist, extending it one by one to the three babies. Their little fists also collide with hers one by one – this is their unique way of greeting.
"Great! Okay, let's get familiar with the surroundings first. Please follow me," she says with enthusiasm.
The three babies, pacifiers in their mouths, sit on the white platform and nod in unison. Then, they turn around, wiggle their little bottoms, step down from the white platform, and holding hands, follow behind Mila.
Mila stops in front of a door, and the automatic door opens after recognizing her identity.
Mila looks back at them, making sure they are following her well. When she sees them holding hands in an adorable manner, she can't help but laugh. This time, all three babies have very quiet and gentle personalities.
After the door opens, a long corridor comes into view, with large rectangular screens on both sides.
Mila leads them through the corridor, saying, "On both sides of the corridor, you'll see screens displaying families who are about to welcome a baby. You can observe and choose here, find your favorite mom. If you choose a mom you like, please don't hesitate to tell me. I'll assist you in being placed with your chosen mom."
Upon reaching the end of the corridor, Mila takes the initiative to hold their hands and walks back. "There are a total of 100 screens here, which means you have 100 choices. If you don't find a mom you like here, don't worry. The data is updated every month, so you'll have many new choices in the future."
Back at the automatic door, Mila continues, "However, you should be aware that after the monthly data update, your chosen mom may enter the selection pool for other babies. In other words, she might be chosen by other babies, and you would lose the chance to select her."
Mila turns around, stopping in front of the automatic door. After identity verification, the door opens. At the same time, the white rectangular platform in front of the energy column slowly rises, disappearing into the ceiling. Simultaneously, three mechanical switches on the ground activate, raising three baby cribs from the floor.
"This is where you rest. If you get tired, you can come back here to sleep," Mila explains.
As the baby cribs smoothly land on the ground, three square platforms rise next to each crib.
"This is the calling station. You can call me or the system for anything," Mila says, and as she speaks, a circular button rises in the middle of the three square pillars. She then guides them around to the back of the energy column, saying, "This is the cloud area. You can move around here."
At that moment, a lullaby starts playing in the room. Mila checks the time on her watch and says, "It's time for a rest, babies. Let's go back to the cribs for now. We'll explore the room later."
The three babies, pacifiers in their mouths, nod in agreement. Mila leads them back to their cribs, and each baby climbs into their own crib, pacifiers in their mouths, ready for a peaceful nap.
Mila ensures that they are all tucked in with their small blankets. "Sweet dreams, babies. I'll come back later." After saying this, she leaves the room and heads to the dining area.
Now, in all the office buildings of this world, the babies sleep, and all the employees have their meals.
The cafeteria also follows a unified white style, and employees orderly hold trays while queuing. The vast cafeteria is remarkably quiet, and the atmosphere remains exceptionally serene during meals.
Finally, it's Mila's turn. The daily offerings from the system are always different, and Mila particularly enjoys the sense of surprise that comes with the unknown.
She has a habit of reading files while eating. These are the task files the system provided her when she entered the office building earlier this morning.
She wants to take advantage of the meal and rest time to read the files thoroughly. There is a lot of content in the files, and the general idea is that the system is in the process of fixing a bug and needs Mila's assistance to complete this bug repair.
In fact, Mila heard about this bug three years ago.
It was during a company-wide meeting when the system first acknowledged its mistake and then explained the process of what happened.
It turned out that a baby, taking advantage of the absence of its supervisor, sneaked into the "selection corridor" and accidentally fell into one of the screens. This mistake directly brought the baby into the real world. Unfortunately, instead of being able to choose a human mom and become a cherished human baby, for some unknown reason, the baby ended up being born to a cat mom and became a little kitten.
