Description:
A fan fiction where the reader gets to decide what will happen next. He will be presented with options of course, but it is quite impossible for us to write a description when we ourselves do not know the development or the outcome of the story. There is of course the possibility that this will get completely disorganized and suck balls… Well, it is your responsibility as a reader to stop leeching, create an account, vote, and stop that from happening. Chapter 1:
DO YOU WANT SOME EASY MONEY?
“Well, considering I was just fired from my last job and I have rent due in a week...Yes.”
ARE YOU CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN UNIVERSITY?
“... I hope this isn’t some schoolgirl fantasy bullshit...Yes.”
ARE YOU AT LEAST 18?
“... This is looking worse and worse by the second…”
DO YOU HAVE SPARE TIME EVERY DAY?
“... Err…”
DO YOU WANT AN EXTRA CREDIT?
“Seriously? A professor? Jesus. The university should really monitor these things…”
Jenna Morrison was saying when she looked at the flyer in her hand.
Desperation and lack of time to find a job before tuition gave her no choice. Wincing at the incredibly suspicious offering, she crumbled the flyer in her hand and started walking at a brisk pace towards the building indicated in the strange job offering.
Never having been to the psychology department before, she got lost twice and, refusing to ask anyone for help, ended up spending thirty minutes aimlessly wandering around campus. Then, she blushed in irritated anger when she realized that the building she was looking for was the one she’d taken the flyer from. The sidewall of it anyhow.
By the time she got to the front desk of the office indicated, she was annoyed and sweaty. The woman behind the counter gave her a suspicious look, but before she could ask anything, Jenna slammed the crumpled piece of paper on the desk before her.
“I’m here for the… offer.”
The woman gave her a sour look as she meticulously unfolded the flyer before her. After barely catching a glimpse of its content the woman gave what appeared to Jenna as a sigh of pure exasperation. Flicking her hand in a rude and half-assed way of pointing and dismissal.
“Last door to the right. Bottom floor.”
Jenna wanted to ask why a whole floor of the biggest building would be dedicated to a psych study, but the woman already seemed pissed off as it was so she just took back her flyer and followed the woman’s directions.
She turned right as indicated and went down, one, two, three, five, eight stories before she reached another woman behind a desk.
“Oh come on!”
She mumbled under her breath.
“I’m here for the.. uh..” Before she could finish, the woman who was obnoxiously chewing on a piece of gum pointedly lifted her finger to press a big button in front of her.
MEEEEEEEHHH.
“Oh, shiiiiiiiAAAAAA”
Fortunately the trapdoor that opened beneath her only led to a long slide instead of the drop Jenna expected when she felt the ground give beneath her. Having confirmed her doubts about the validity of the suspicious offer, she continued to scream even after she’d actually stopped moving.
*Ehem*
The unexpected sound caused Jenna to close her mouth and open her clenched eyes. Standing over her, for she was now laying on the ground, was the oldest human being she’d ever seen. The guy looked like a corpse on a very bad sunny day in the desert. Nothing but dried skin and bone.
Barely moving and not speaking a word she rose her arm to show the man the crumpled flyer.
“...Job.”
“Well Hun, this isn’t precisely a job now is it? This is a laboratory after all. What we are doing here is… Are you coming?”
The man had started to walk away from her as soon as words started leaving his mouth. His decrepit state did not do his physical fitness any justice as the man was literally zooming, if that were a thing a person could do.
Jenna struggled to her feet as the man continued on his brisk pace, disappearing around the corner. He never stopped talking.
“Is revolutionary. Virtual reality. A whole new concept, granted it’s been talked about since I was a little boy… Why do you think I held out so long? I knew Virtual reality would become reality before I kicked the bucket. And I was right wasn’t I? Anyhow, beyond this door is where you will be spending all of your time when you are here. Are you ready?”
“Ready for what? Isn’t there some sort of interview?”
“You already had it. Passed with flying colors, too”
“When?”
The man did not reply as he continued past the door they had just reached into a chamber with dozens of metal coffins. Immediately Jenna thought she had somehow been caught in some sort of convoluted practical joke.
*Gulp.*
Seeing her just standing there looking at the coffins the corp… old man, who along with the coffins gave her a very strange feeling just looked at her sharply before yelling at her.
“Well don’t just stand there, get in. Chop chop, we don’t have all day.”
Jenna jumped a little.
“In-Inside?”
Jenna asked, incredulous.
This decrepit old vamp is not getting me inside a bloody coffin.
Seeing her start to retreat the old man’s gaze sharpened.
“Forty pounds.”
Jenna froze.
“What?”
“Forty pounds an hour, plus meals and six credits in electives.”
“Deal.”
The offer short circuited Jenna’s brain. Moving like a zombie she approached the nearest coffin, not reacting in the slightest when it silently opened before her. It looked comfortable enough.
Once again looking upwards towards the old man Jenna felt a shiver as she saw him smiling. He had very white teeth.
“See, told you. Flying colors”
Then he slammed the coffin door closed, leaving her in darkness.
A new, feminine voice reacher her ears before panic had a moment to settle.
“Connect to Royal Road.”
“Errr, what?”
“Connect to Royal Road.”
“Heard you the first time, what the bloody hell is Royal Road?”
“...Just say yes.”
“Yes?”
“You have connected to Royal Road. The scan of your iris and vein has determined that you are an unregistered user. Do you want to create a new account?”
“...”
*Cough*
“Alright, Alright. Yes”
After all I wouldn’t want to loose my 40 pounds and hour for failing to comply with a bloody survey.
“Select the name of your avatar.”
What avatar? Like those blue things from the movie?
Ransacking her brain for something resembling the name of those aliens she realized she couldn’t remember even what the movie was about, film history was not a class she particularly enjoyed.
Thinking about that class brought about lot of memories of classes she’d hated over the years.
“Would you please pick a name? I have more questions.”
“I’m thinking!”
Somewhere along her mental jumble of half blundered classes an answer came up.
“Freya.”
Jenna didn’t quite know where she’d gotten the name from. Somewhere around Nordic mythology was her best guess.
Warning: Despite being a kind Goddess Freya does not appreciate it when mortals usurp her name and is often keen upon divine retribution.
Are you sure you wish to proceed with the name: Freya
“Bugger. No.”
“Would you please pick...”
“I don’t know, anything’s fine!”
“Confirmed. Player’s name will be Subject Four.”
What kind of name is that!
“Select your gender from male, female or neutral.”
“I got boobs, don’t I?”
Jenna was very sensitive about her sub-average... DNA.
“Select your gender from male, female or neutral.”
“Oh for Christ’s sake. These here mean I am a girl. Yes? Feeemmaaallleee.”
“Royal Road has forty-nine races. You may select your race from the primary twenty-nine.”
