"All people to your homes! Warning! All people to your homes!" the alarm of the Confederacy sounded loud in High City, its capital.
A young couple was running home before the end of the hour. The siege had been going on for a long time, but they never had a problem like this. Thinking of the consequences it could bring, cold sweat ran down the back of their necks. The woman carried a baby in her arms as she followed her boyfriend, who was leading the march through the dirty streets of the slums.
The man stopped without warning and pointed somewhere. The woman saw through the toxic fog a house on the verge of collapsing, with windows covered with cardboard and a door that did not inspire much confidence.
"We've done it! We're here!" the man yelled in pure joy.
They went into the house and made sure to cover every possible hole so no air could get in. Then they turned on the artificial oxygen and removed their masks. The man took off his coat, the woman placed the baby on the table, taking care not to make it in the least dirty, and gave him hers. The man hung them on a dirty coat rack and they sat on the excuses of chairs that was really a leftover cardboard box and an armchair taken from the dumpster.

"That was close. Next time make sure you shower at the right time. I don't want to run around trying not to get killed."
"It's not my fault. Who was the one who was watching TV listening to the news?"
"Hey, I don't support the war, at least."
"Shh, ¿what if someone hears you?"
The baby began to cry. The mother quickly went to see what it was. She offered him the baby bottle and he didn't accept it. He spat the pacifier out. Then, a liquid began to form in the diaper filling it up to cover much of it. The mother smiled, reached under her weak bed for a box of diapers, and pulled out a clean one. Finally, she changed it to the baby's. A process perfected over time. Three months being the mother of this creature made her softer with people. The young man noticed it too, and realized that part of him was affected as well.
"Our greatest pride in life." He approached his girlfriend and put an arm around her back to hug her.
"Yeah, I don't understand why Victor was so mad. This is all we wanted." She rested her head on the man's shoulder.
"Yeah..." the man said, something inside his head was bothering him, however he ignored it and decided to treasure this moment.
They stayed in that position for a long time. Reflecting on the decisions they made to get here. Betrayals, murders, greed. Things this little guy would live with in the future. Of course, not right now. These were days when all they had to worry about was the baby. These were happy days.
