Chapter 1: Rebirth and my Abilities
“Woah!” Shawn exclaimed in confusion. The last thing he remembered was crossing the street, looking to the side, and seeing a large truck about to run him over. Did I die? Is this the afterlife? What’s going on?
Looking around, Shawn saw that he was sitting on a black leather couch in a white room, and across from him on an identical couch was an old man with white hair and a beard, staring at him.
“Good Shawn, now that you are here, we can start. Listen carefully, as in order for this to be fair we only have 5 minutes, which have already started.” The man said. Shawn immediately swallowed down what he had been about to say. He had always been annoyed by the people in his squad who couldn’t shut up when it was needed, and being quiet when an officer was talking had long become a habit for him. If they only had 5 minutes, he would have to make the best of them to understand what was happening to him, and the time for questions and understanding his death would come later.
“Good. My name is not important, but you can call me Sylas if you require. You have been randomly chosen to be part of the first batch of humans from your world to be reincarnated in the world of Styrna, one of the many worlds of the Labyrinth. You will be reincarnated as a newborn in this world, and sixteen years after you and the first batch arrive the rest of humanity will follow you, with all of them finishing their arrival 4 years later.” Sylas stopped at this point and looked at me, waiting to see if I had any questions. I had many, many questions, but I simply gestured for him to go on, the presence of a 5-minute timer burning in the back of my head.
Seeing this, Sylas continued,” Arriving early gives you many advantages. The world you will be arriving at is a medieval world of swords and magic, governed by a System, like the video games you frequently play. You will have time to grow used to this and learn the relevant skills that can help you survive. You will also be guaranteed at least 5 Abilities, with at least one of them being Tier4, while those arriving after you will be guaranteed only at least one Tier 1 Ability. Although this is not a game, you will be receiving a chance to revive, which naturally the natives do not have. You will start with a random number of revives between 2 and 5, and there are ways in which you can gain more which you’ll have to discover for yourself.”
“There is no set objective for you”, Sylas said “Although it is expected that the arrival of the rest of your world will cause great war and chaos in the world. In any case, a certain amount of time after your world finishes arriving, portals will be opened between your world and another, similar one which you will be forced to fight. That’s it, do you have any questions? You have been remarkably quiet, and we have a bit more than a minute left.”
Shawn thought for a moment and then asked “How many others will be with me in the first batch?”
“Fifty Thousand” Sylas answered.
“And how big is Styrna?”
“Its surface area is about 4 times larger than your earth”.
Shawn took a minute to think. That was very relevant information that was good to know, which meant Sylas had purposely withheld things and would only tell me them if I asked the right questions. He quickly thought through what he had been told, thinking what the most relevant question he could ask was. Something that he wouldn’t learn anyways once he reincarnated.
“What is the maximum Tier of an ability? And can Locals also have them?”
“The highest Tier an ability can be is Tier 5, and locals will also have abilities, although the amount and strength will be on average much weaker.”
Shawn kept trying to think of another question, but in the heat of the moment, he wasn’t able to find anything important to ask. Finally, aware of his time limit, Shawn blurted out.
“What would you ask if you were in my place?” and now that he had started talking it seemed the dam had broken because he continued: “What should I do when I get there? What advice can you give me? Can I choose my own abilities or will they be random? If yes, what should I choose? What should I focus on?”
“I cannot tell you what to ask, but you should know you are doing well, most of your kind is not as good at accepting their situation”, Shawn felt a small flash of pride at hearing that, though he quickly smothered it down. Sylas had such a powerful and commanding presence, and combined with the way he looked and his almost fatherly air, it made Shawn feel like a small child being praised for scoring high on a test.
“The abilities you get and where and in what kind of place you will be born are completely random, so I cannot give you specific advice. I will only say that you should lean heavily into your abilities, whatever they are. Think of different ways to get the most out of them and use them well. Train whatever skills you can as much as you can, and don’t fall for the easy, fast way of progression. Being born into the world gives you a big advantage, as you will have time to form friendships and allies. Use this well, and don’t isolate yourself. Also, years on Styrna are longer than on earth, so you have more time than you think. We only have a couple of seconds left, so I’ll just wish you good luck. I have a feeling you’ll do quite well. Oh, also, seek out others like you. Whether you fight or become allies, they will be a path to power.”
And just like that, Shawn found himself floating in a warm liquid, surrounded by warm walls that were restricting him. He shortly identified it as likely being his mother’s womb. As he felt his surroundings start to squeeze him, he wished for the best as he was birthed in this new world.

6 Months Old
Rainar turned around in his small cradle. Feeling slightly embarrassed at his excitement. Today he had managed to walk for the first time, and although for someone who was more than 25 years old mentally it was embarrassing to be excited about something so simple, he couldn’t help it. He had been trying to walk for a while now, and the sense of fulfillment was just nice. It had already been six months since he had been born. Being a baby was hard, and most his time was spent sleeping or eating, and the absolute dependency and inability to do anything himself was frustrating. He had used the time well though. Getting over his death and reincarnation had been the first thing he set his mind to.
His mother and father, his two older sisters and their children. His Squad, his friends, his life, his dreams. It had taken some time, and he still missed them and would look for them where he could, but he was wholeheartedly ready to devote himself to this new world.
The next thing he had thought of was his discussion with Sylas. There were many questions he wished he had asked him, but dealing in what ifs was a waste of time and wasn’t his way. Instead, he had thought over Sylas’s advice, and had looked at his Status, learning what his Abilities were and what he could do with them. Thinking so, he summoned it now to review it.

Seeing his Abilities for the first time had made him ecstatic. He had gotten both a Tier 5 ability, and a Tier 4 one. It was incredible. He also remembered the advice Sylas had given him. Lean into the strengths of his Abilities, and think of ways to maximize their potential. The two Tier 1 abilities were naturally not part of this discussion, and although Charismatic and Skilled Tamer were nice Abilities, compared to the other two they weren’t worth talking about. Whatever long term plans he made, they would have to be centered around Max Skill Affinity and Attribute Affinity. Luckily, they seemed to complement one another. It was a shame he had gotten unlucky with the number of revives he had gotten, but that was fine. He would much rather have a lot of powerful abilities than another opportunity to revive.
The general long-term plan was of course quite easy to make; He would train as many skills as he could, and also train his attributes as much as possible, thus taking advantage of both high-Tier Abilities. Anything more specific would likely have to wait until he understood more about this world. While he did think about a lot of different options in his head, until he knew how the System functioned, and grew up a bit and was able to be slightly more autonomous, there wasn’t much he could do. However, he did come to a few realisizations. One, although he had gotten very lucky with his Abilities, as he believed that the average person from the first batch would only have one Tier 4 Ability and nothing higher, he should act as if there were people out there who were even luckier than him, who had better and more abilities than he did. While this may not be true now, when the rest of humanity arrived and nearly 10 billion people randomly received abilities, this was sure to be true. This was doubly true when considering all the locals who naturally also had Abilities, and there was probably quite a lot of them since the surface area of this world was 4 times that of earth.
What this all meant, and really only emphasized what Sylas had told him, was that he had to lean into his strengths. And his Abilities were kind of pushing him into becoming some kind of jack of all trades. If he chose to become a warrior, then there was someone out there with Max Warrior Skills Affinity(Tier 5), which also had 100% affinity to all warrior skills, and also extremely increased skill experience and attributes, and a ton of abilities to enhance him even further. And if he chose to become a mage, or a blacksmith, an alchemist, a merchant, a lord… anything he could choose to become, there was somebody who had the same ability Tiers as Rainer did, but geared toward that path, and so he would never be as good as him at that.
Of course, Rainer knew someone like that probably didn’t actually exist, definitely not for every skill and profession out there, but still. Limiting himself to only one path wasn’t wise. Another thing was that he had gotten very lucky and was born as a noble. He still wasn’t sure who and to what, and was also still only learning the language, but he was determined to use this as well to his advantage.
His skills were quite interesting. Meditation was something he had decided to start doing since he anyways spent so much time doing nothing as a toddler, and he had learned the skill. When meditating, he had increased regeneration to all his resource pools by X%, where X was his skill level. Which meant it was quite weak now, but could prove useful as it grew in level. The other skill, Inspect, was something he had learned while petting Lyra, a massive grey skinned animal similar to a panther but with six legs, which as far as he understood was his father’s Tamed beast. He had been studying her while petting her, wondering what kind of Beast she was when suddenly Inspect activated. She had been too high leveled for the skill to tell him anything, but it had still been wonderful to gain such a useful skill.
As far as he could tell, using Inspect was like a small mini spell. It cost 5 mana, was instant and had no cooldown and no gestures or words that were required to use it. It could be used on objects, people, and beasts, and provided a status screen which showed their information. The higher he could level it, the more information it would show, although right now leveling it was hard since he had almost no mana and no mana regeneration.

2 Years old
Rainer sighed as he sat down wearily. The last few hours had been a tiring blur of old people saying hello and praising him to try and curry favor with his parents and grandfather. It was his second birthday, and his parents had made a bit of an occasion out of it, inviting lots of their vassals and allies. Barons, Knights, Mayors of towns in our lands. A lot of people had attended it, and I had been paraded around by my proud parents. In the about year and a half since I had learned to walk, I had been spending every moment I could training. Of course, a toddler couldn’t actually train, so my training was mainly just running around, and perhaps doing some light exercise like squats and pushups until my stamina fell too low, and then sleeping and training meditation. Over this time, I had slowly revealed more of myself to my parents, slowly building myself as a child prodigy. I had no wish to be known as a someone who reincarnated, but I was also unwilling to act as a normal child and waste my time.
In any case, my heightened physical activity, combined with my Attribute Affinity ability, made me grow faster than others my age. Combined with the increased intelligence I had shown, this made my parents quite proud of me. I had learned that Styrna had 14 months, each with 32 days. The days were like an earth day, with 24 hours a day and 60 minutes and hour. However, this still meant that each year was about 2 and a half earth months longer, which meant in earth years I was now about two and a half years old. Combined with my Abilities and training, I looked more like a four year old on earth.
I was the oldest, and currently only child, and therefore the heir to my family, which is part of why my parents were so proud of the potential I showed. Although my mother was already showing signs of being pregnant with another child, my parents and grandfather were still very invested in me and my growth. I had even convinced them to start teaching me how to read and write a couple of months ago. It had taken a couple of weeks of pointing at books, asking questions, and crying when they wouldn’t teach me, before they had caved and started teaching me earlier than they had planned. I had held myself back, learning it slower than I otherwise could, although it was anyways quite hard to learn, as their writing and reading characters where much more complicated than the English I had been used to. Although for now they were still restricting my reading to children’s books with no useful information, it was still a good way to raise my Skills, and I was confident I could soon convince them to allow me access to the family library.

“Rainer, there you are! I wondered where you had run off to” my father boomed as he walked into the small sitting room I had gone to rest in. Count Larry Argold was a large man, standing over six feet tall with broad shoulders, short black hair, and a beard, with brown eyes and a serious face. Walking to his right was Lyra, and on his shoulder was Lark, his Tamed raven. My father was a large, imposing, and powerful man, but his naming sense for his Tamed beasts left much to be desired.
“I see all the guests have tired you. Come, it’s time for the present you have been waiting for.” My father said. Suddenly completely awake, I followed my father as he left. I had been waiting excitedly for this ever since my father revealed it would be happening. My father led me to the private family dining room. It was a small room, with a beautiful carved wooden table for six and various tapestries on the walls, and it was where we usually ate informal meals. In the room waiting for me were my mother and grandfather.
My mother was a plain woman. She had long black hair, pale skin, and a slightly flabby body, with a slight bulge starting to show in her stomach from her pregnancy. While I wouldn’t call her simple, she also wasn’t very impressive in any way. This was quite a large contrast from my father, who was very smart, and as far as I could ascertain, also a powerful warrior. It had taken me a while to understand how they had gotten together, but eventually I had pieced together the story from gossip I heard from the maids and tidbits I got from my parents.
My father was part of a long line of barons, known for having a family trait that ran in the blood that made us all powerful Tamers. That was likely the source of my Skilled Tamer Ability. My father had been born with a powerful affinity to taming, and also grew up to be a powerful warrior in his own right. He was only the fourth son, and so he left home when he was young to be an officer in the army, and then when that didn’t work out, he left to adventure alone with his tamed beasts. Eventually, he returned to the kingdom and his lands, but discovered that in his absence his family had fallen on hard times. His brothers were all dead, some by chance, and some by assassination from other noble families seeking to exploit their weakness. His lands were stunted economically, and his father was growing weak. Although the arrival of my father stabilized the situation, and after effortlessly defeating the assassins sent after him most of the plots against his family stopped, it didn’t stop his family from still being in dire economic straits.
My grandfather, father of my mother, on the other hand, was a Count of the kingdom, who was a very successful Trader. In his time as Count, he had managed to multiply his family fortune and create many useful connections and allies. However, he only ever had one daughter, who was not nearly as impressive as he was. Not beautiful, not particularly smart nor skilled, he had trouble finding a good match for her. Something that would strengthen his House. When he heard of Larry’s return and the situation of his family, he immediately pounced on the opportunity. And thus, my parents married. My father, who was of a lower noble rank, took on my mothers name and became a count. My grandfather got both a powerful combatant in the family and a promise that all his descendants would be similarly powerful because of my father’s family trait. I was truly lucky to be born in such a family, and all of them coddled and loved me a lot.
“Rainer” My father said, bringing me back to the present. “Today is an important day for you, in which we will complete a family ritual of ours.” He said. I made sure my face was appropriately awed and serious, trying not to let my excitement show. He nodded when he saw my seriousness.
“While usually this is only done when you turn four years old, seeing your maturity and rapidly growing body, I have decided to do it now. It is never to early to start raising your skills. In our world, the System separates Skill levels into different ranks. From 1-10 is a novice, 10-25 a beginner, 25-45 an apprentice, 45-70 a journeyman, 70-100 and adept, and above 100 is a master. Ordinarily in order to learn a skill you must perform the action without a skill. Then, depending on your affinity, how hard you try and the situation, you can get the skill and start practicing it to raise your skill level. In any case, an affinity above 50% is required to raise a skills level, and as you raise it your affinity will slowly decrease. However, there is also another way to learn a skill. Anyone who is an Adept or above, meaning they have reached level 70 in a certain skill, can awaken this skill in someone with a simple touch and a word, assuming that person has at least 50% affinity to that skill. This can save you a lot of time and money, especially when it is a higher tiered skill like magic, which can be very hard to learn in another way.”
I nodded my head, drinking up everything my father was saying and committing it to memory. Finally, some answers!
“I myself am an Adept of 3 skills, and will attempt to awaken all three of them for you. Your grandfather, who is also an Adept, has also agreed to do this for you, and has also prepared a small gift for you. You should feel very lucky, even in noble households, having so many adepts is rare. Most nobles ask their various vassals to help awaken their heirs, and while this is something we will also do for you as you grow, you will also be able to train extensively with us in the skills you awaken, which will provide you with a large advantage. In any case, enough talking. Lets start!”
And so saying, my father kneeled in front of me to get down to my height, and placed one hand on my forehead and one on my sternum. It kind of felt like that scene from Avatar The Last Airbender.
“Awaken” he intoned, and Rainer felt a powerful thrum of energy flow through him, before he received new prompts.

“Oh! All three, wonderful!” My father said. Apparently, he had some way of telling, because I had barely started reading the first prompt when he was already celebrating.
“Wonderful!”
“Congratulations honey!” My grandfather and mother also cheered and congratulated me. I grinned at them as I finished reading my prompts in a daze.
“My turn now!” My grandfather said excitedly as he knelt before me and placed his hands as my father had.
“Awaken!”

“Oh!” my grandfather exclaimed, “Both of mine as well! Quite the skilled boy you have here…”
I could see that my grandfather was getting suspicious, but there wasn’t much I could do. Besides, I had learned 5 new skills! And it seems like the evening of presents wasn’t yet done, as my grandfather produced a leather tome from his bag and handed it to me.
“This is a spell book for a level 1 Light spell” my grandfather said, “There are two ways to learn one of the eight Magic Skills. The first is to have an Adept awaken the skill in you. If you have the necessary affinity you will awaken the skill and even gain one or two level 1 spells from the System depending on you affinity. The other way is to attempt to learn a level 1 spell from a spellbook. If you have the affinity, then you will learn the spell and also the appropriate magic skill. However, this way is extremely wasteful. Spell books are either found in dungeons, or made by the combined effort of a scholar, enchanter and mage. Spell books are also single use items, and since only about one out of every 100 people has above 50% to a magic skill, it is usually a waste of gold. Despite this it is still customary among wealthy noble families to attempt to awaken all 8 magical skills in their children, as it is very useful for those that have it. I had been planning on doing this when you were older, but I happened to have this book on me and decided that we could start with light today.”
I was staring in awe at the book. Inspect was nice, and the taming my father had taught me sounded cool. But this was magic! I couldn’t wait to try, and I knew I would be able to use it because of my Ability.
“You need to simply open the book and try to absorb its knowledge, and the System will do the rest” Grandfather said.
Grinning, I opened the book and started reading, and was soon faced with a prompt asking me if I wanted to try to learn the level 1 Light spell: Light Ball. Excitedly choosing yes, I was faced with more prompts.
Congratulations!
You have learned the spell Light Ball(Tier 1)!

“Another success? Wonderful! Such a talented boy!” my grandfather said excitedly. I could tell he was genuinely happy, but he also likely suspected I had an ability that increased my skill affinity. The chances of me having over 50% affinity for all these skills was absurdly low. And in any case, I would not be able to hide from him in later years that I had affinity for the other magical skills as I would need his help to learn them and get more spell books. Grinning, I went over to my father to hug him, and he lifted me up in his arms and smothered me.
“Thank You!” I told him, “Thank you all”. I then proceeded to walk over to all of them and hug them. I truly considered these people as my family, and was very happy with the presents they had gotten me. I also knew that I had been acting a bit to grown up this evening, and some cute hugs should remind them all that I was just a child. After some time to calm down, and eating some wonderful cookies and milk that the maids brought in, my father brought me my last gift for the night.
It was a small bundle of blankets, and in it was a small egg.
“Part of our family tradition is bonding with a raven as your first Beast. As you will soon learn, each rank you achieve in your Taming skill will allow you to Tame one more Beast. Although Ravens aren’t powerful or fast, they are very smart birds, and raising one from infancy will create a powerful bond between the two of you. Me and Lark have been together for nearly 20 years now, and he has always been a steadfast companion and friend. When he reached Tier 2, he even got the ability to talk with me telepathically. Ravens are very intelligent animals, and this one will serve as a wonderful first companion for you. They should hatch in less than a week.”
“Thank You Father!” I ran to give him another hug, before carefully taking the small bundle of blankets from him.
“Now come Rainer, it’s time for you to go to sleep, and I can show you on the way how to take care of the egg.”
“Yes Father” I dutifully followed him upstairs to my bedroom.

Seeing all those new skills was very satisfying, and I couldn’t wait to start leveling them. My attributes had increased a lot, and I attributed that to two different reasons. Part of it was just growing up and was completely natural. The other part of it was my Attribute Affinity Ability. One day I had been running around, trying to exhaust my stamina, when I had received a prompt that I had gained +1 Endurance. And then I had felt… Full, for lack of a better word. Like I had hit a wall. It took me a bit of time to understand, but eventually I did. My Ability limited how many attributes I could gain in each level. Specifically, I could currently gain one of each attribute for every level. I hoped that would eventually rise, but that seemed to be my current limit. After I realized that, I had started finding ways to train my different attributes. Strength, Agility, Dexterity, and Endurance I had raised with simple exercises. Constitution had been a bit harder, but I eventually just started lightly hitting the wall with my body, usually my elbows or shins so it will be easier to hide. Just enough to cause a bit of damage that would slowly heal, and I would do this as often as needed in order to always be slightly healing. This was also how I had learned the Unarmed and Unarmored skills.
Wisdom and Intelligence had also been quite easy. Although the leveling progress of Inspect had slowed to a crawl because I had been Inspecting the same things again and again, it was still a good way to use mana, and thus train Intelligence and Wisdom. Charisma and Luck had been much harder though, and had eventually led me to the Acting and Gambling skills. Acting was something I anyways needed to help keep my secrets, and it also just seemed like a generally useful skill. I also tried practicing it on the maids, using my charisma and Acting to convince them to give me cookies, play outside for another hour… truly good uses of the skill. The gambling I had been doing was actually quite embarrassing. Since I didn’t want to reveal to anyone what I was doing, I had to gamble with myself. Tossing a rock and gambling on what side it would fall, whether or not the maid would trip on the stairs… that had likely made it level very slowly, which was why it was only level 2 after all this time.
The other Part of my Ability,” Can directly gain resource pool and regeneration from training.” Was what allowed me to have so much more health, stamina, and mana than my attributes would otherwise indicate. From watching my pools as I gained attributes, I had learned that for every point in Constitution, Endurance, and Intelligence, I gained 10 points in Health, Stamina and Mana respectively. Constitution, Endurance and Wisdom seemed to be in charge of resource pool regeneration.
My ability allowed me to gain points from training directly in these resource pools and their regeneration, which is what allowed me to have 67 health although I only had 3 Constitution. The Ability seemed to limit it to around 40 per level, although I felt that this limit wasn’t as “Hard”, as the limit for attributes. If I kept training for a long time, I could still get a couple of more points to the pools, although it would take me much more time to get a point than before I reached this “Soft” limit.
Although gaining 40 health, Stamina and Mana every level was very nice, it wasn’t nearly as good as gaining 4 constitution, endurance and intelligence. After all, these attributes had more effects than simply increasing my pools. They increased resistance, how quickly I tired, and how powerful my spells were. If someone with 7 constitution and me where to receive the same blow, I would lose more health than him.
My Tier 1 Abilities had recently partly unlocked, and it seemed to me that as I grew up they would slowly continue to do so. It made sense that there was such a function since a baby with 1 Constitution and 5 Strength would likely kill itself quickly.
My exp was still locked. I had gotten exp a couple of times, sometimes for small every day things, and once for Meditation reaching level 10 and becoming a Beginner in the skill. Meditation was by far the skill I used the most, which was why it was so much higher leveled. The maids may think I was just resting after playing and running around, but truly my day was mainly just running around to exhaust my stamina, Inspecting some things to use up my mana, and then meditating to top it all up.
I had also learned, the hard way, that reaching a low amount of mana was very, very painful. It gave me a huge headache and made it hard to think, and even when my mana regenerated back it didn’t completely abate. I was trying to build a resistance to this, but it was very slow, and finding the willpower to put myself through that was very hard.
In any case, I was sure that with all of these new skills, I would have a busy time ahead of me.
