Chapter 1 - Meltdown

Chapter 1 - Meltdown

As Joey was tinkering with his magic cannon inside his room, one of his friends suddenly pushed open his door and shouted.

“James, and his wife are inside the city! The Undying James is here!”

Joey had an evil grin on his face, he had been training and preparing for this day.

This information was considered by many as a highly classified one.

All of them, mainly those who hated James to the core knew what The Undying James mean.

When the chaos started 100years ago, a deadly virus spread all over like a deadly plague.

The dead arose from their slumber and whichever get bitten joins their ranks.

Except for those who were recently born, everyone knew who The Undying James was, he is one of those mutant humans comparable to an immortal entity.

They had no sharp fangs or horns, but they are destruction themselves.

James was just like any others, a human.

Although far from being a normal human, for some reason he obtain such powers which no one could properly explain where it came from.

“Dan has just given me a call. He will never let this chance go by” Joey’s friend said.

“We cannot defeat this monster directly, Gil. We have already tried everything, from swords, spears, lances, claymores, arrows, and poisons. James just swats them away with his hands like an annoying fly. Magic and magical weapons has been the only ones effective against him. We may not be able to kill him, but severely injuring him is not a problem,”

“He is not a normal human, magic may be our only hope.”

“Joey, he is currently seen staying in an inn near the city gate. Our men spotted the couple. They have not caused any problems to anyone or created any destructions.”

“He is just preparing, Gil. We should strike before he caught wind of us.”

“But Joey… as far as I can see, he has done nothing. He is just here with his companion, and not terrorizing the city.”

“When have you ever dealt personally with a monster like him?! Have you ever seen the aftermath of his destruction?! Monster like him can never be killed, Gil! I was born and raise for this reasons, and as of now I can probably injure him with this Magic cannon! People like him have limitless power to lay waste to whatever land they step, and I will not let James begin to lay waste to mine! I will take him down before he takes us all down to hell!”

Joey was born and bred just for this.

He was educated by the previous kings and queens to be the protector of this region, and knew nothing more.

He lived a humble life as an imperial guard, but the teachings and mission he received carried more weight than his own life.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

This was his calling, and he wouldn’t falter.

“This is too much, you may get burnt out. James has done nothing wrong, He may just be only travelling with his woman and coincidentally stopped and rested here,” Gil said while trying to convince Joey.

“Nonsense, he had already lived 100 years, Gil. He has took far many lives. So many that we and our fathers and grandfathers couldn’t even count, we may have dealt with those brainless dead easily, but monster like him… The Plague that was brought by that ball of fire couldn’t even affect him, no matter how many times he get bitten by the undead, he couldn’t be affected like how we normal humans turn into a walking corpse when we get bitten. They live while many die because of the Plague. His existence is unnatural, and I must use unnatural means to restore balance.” Joey was determined. “Enough explanation. If James is currently staying in an inn near us, then let us get ready, time is of the essence.”

Joey took his magic cannon, left the barn, and Gil soon followed after.

~~~
Inside the inn, James was sitting with Alena by the table eating heartedly.
He just wanted to keep on living without the constant annoyances of others who always attempting to destroy his existence.
They were meddlesome, much more annoying than those brainless dead.
Having The Undying James as his title wasn’t the mythical desire he wanted.
He just want to survive like everyone did.
James witnessed firsthand how chaotic the time was a hundred years ago, how a single meteor brought such destruction, and how an unknown plague spread.
Everyone who got bitten by the infected also becomes infected, even animals weren’t spared.
He knew of the atrocity his fellow humans have.
Deceits, Betrayals, Violence and Temptations, those characteristics were everywhere.
Through all of that, He was there to witness and experience them all.
James somehow evolved, from a normal human he became something more, and he had to change in order to fit the time.
Evolution was a painfully slow process.
That process was effortless for an existence who somehow could control their rationale, but when one couldn’t endure, evolution was its own curse, others may lose their minds while some surrender to their desires. Evolution is painful, but inevitable.
James sometimes felt that he wanted to not exist anymore.
He had been through everything one could imagine.
If not for coincidentally meeting Alena, then he would rather die instead of suffering from the constant assault of his fellow humans.
Living in this world is harsh, but living in it alone is harsher, and he is thankful for Alena.
Without her by his side, living itself is a curse.
He had compassionately saved many lives, and executed those who took the opportunity to oppress others.
He wasn’t good or evil, he was just doing what he deem is right.
His companion the love of his life, Alena, put her hands on his shoulders.
“I understand your problems and anger. Do you want anything to eat?”
“You know eating will not quench my anger. I tried to avoid them for these past few years. That action alone is an act of mercy. I have done everything, my love. If it weren’t for you, I would try to end my existence.”
Alena kissed him on his forehead and said while gazing at him lovingly.
“You my love is destined to save lives and lead others in this chaos. I am merely here to accompany and take care of you, so that you wouldn’t abandon rationality. Let us just continue with our journey, god will watch over us.”
“A journey has a destination! This is an eternal punishment!” James exploded.
“Do you know why I was given the title of The Undying or Immortal? It’s because I have been cursed by something or someone or maybe it was that god who cursed me! to just witness every history, and every future! This is just probably a game to him!”
Alena knew James is starting to lose himself, like others before him, meltdown would occur to those existence who had reached their final form.
When she decided to love him with all her hearth, she had been long prepared for it.
“You are stronger than this, dear. Your existence alone is proof that we humans could overcome everything. You have been through thick and thin, you have experienced the downfall of our community, you have destroyed those who wreaked havoc on this land in the name of whatever lord they serve. You have witnessed the hypocrisy of Humans. You have observed everything, and did not succumb to the darkness because I found you before you fully did. You are my love, and I will not let you melt in front of me. You are is stronger than that.”
