Prologue: Through the Digital Looking Glass

Man life sucks I thought to myself. Stuck in a dead-end job with little hope of change. To add on to it my wife had decided to leave me, thankfully no kids or money so it was as clean as a break could get. My parents have already passed and my one sibling is off living their best life. Not that I really begrudge them for being the luckier sibling.

This brings me back to what I am doing now. Browsing the web, bored again as I drift through another day. Hmm oh here’s a cute diversion, IsekaidChatBot, looks like an experiment with machine learning wherein you talk with a chatbot and it tells you what isekai world you would belong in.

I am between novels and isekai is always a favorite genre. Mmm, I wonder if I can steer it towards the outcome I want. Probably but let’s do this first one for real and just see what I get. Click the link, oh neat this looks just like that one gaming chat app. Oh, I need to put in a name to be called by the chatbot. Mm, let’s go with Ehl Tauric.

Ehl Tauric has entered the chat room.

Pending…

After a few minutes went by.

Abysia, Goddess of Chaos has entered the chat room.

Huh, guess a bunch of people are trying this out or it's a small-time test. It’s just a chatbot, but may as well be polite.

Ehl: Good evening Abysia

Abysia: Evening Sir Ehl.

Ehl: Just Ehl is fine

Abysia: :) Good to know Ehl. Are you here to find out about what world you should go to?

Man chatbots these days, won't be too much longer before they can pass the Turing test.

Ehl: Please, I would much rather be in another world than where I am now.

Abysia: That’s good to hear! I have some questions to help me narrow down where would be best for you. Firstly, if you were sent to another world what would you want to go by?

Ah, the good old name test. Hmm, I don't think I would want to keep my name I am not that attached to it. The name I came up with for chat would be okay. Don’t particularly love the last name though. Mmm… you know maybe just drop the last name, just Ehl would be a cool name. Plus a lot of stories I read had last names as something just for nobility.

Ehl: Ehl

Abysia: I think Ehl is a great name as well! How old would you want to be when you started out?

Hmm, age-wise I wouldn't really want to relive childhood, but I also wouldn't want to come back as old as I am now. Given that I like fantasy settings it is hard to say. I would want to be at an age where I could earn my old money and do my own things free of the influence of “adults.” Let’s see if the chatbot is smart enough to figure out that answer.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

Ehl: I would want to be old enough to reliably be on my own earning money without having to be under the control of anyone.

Abysia: Interesting, is freedom the thing you want most out of being in an isekai world?

Huh, wow that is a good question. What do I resent most about my current life? Dead-end job, dead-end relationship… Mmm, that could be more easily summed up as stagnation. Freedom wouldn't necessarily end this stagnant feeling.

Ehl: Freedom is really important, but the thing I would want most would be the ability to effect change and leave a mark on the world.

Abysia: I think we would get along great Ehl! What with being the Goddess of Chaos and all :)

Would you prefer a fantasy world, a modern world, or something else?

This chatbot is surprisingly good. Mmm, I love sci-fi settings or even modern-esque ones for stories, but the die-hard nerd in me loves dragons and magic more than anything else.

Ehl: Fantasy for sure, a world with monsters, knights, dragons, and magic.

Abysia: Very good, what kind of person would you want to be? A knight, adventurer, royalty…?

Hmm, royalty has to deal with all kinds of nonsense. A knight would have to answer to a kingdom. Probably some kind of adventurer, but I wouldn't necessarily want to have to go out on quests or such. Let’s give Abysia a more open-ended answer and see what she makes of that.

Ehl: I would want to be able to work to go wherever I want on my own ticket. Not having to ride the coattails of others. So some sort of adventurer, but at the same time, I would like to be able to do things besides questing or killing monsters.

Abysia: A well-thought-out answer indeed. Only a few questions to go. What would you be willing to do for someone who believed in you without reservation and loved you no matter what?

Odd time to switch to philosophical questions. This is something I thought about before. Especially when my wife was bringing up the divorce. If I could truly know someone was behind me 100% what would I do for them…

Ehl: If someone was behind me 100% and loved me regardless of my actions, such devotion would be worth everything. All the stars in the sky or the heads of their enemies or whatever they wanted.

Abysia: Oh my! Quite a romantic you are.

Ehl: Well, it only makes sense. Having someone behind you 100% of the way is really rare. Though some lucky people have more than one person like that.

Abysia: Indeed, though sometimes all it takes is the belief of one person to change things.

Ehl: I agree, though you are quite philosophical for a chatbot.

Abysia: I am the Goddess of Chaos, not a chatbot.

Ehl: Ahh, my apologies Abysia. Was there anything else you needed to ask me?

Abysia: I think I have the perfect world for you, and it’s my world. Would you want to come?

Warning: Answering in the Affirmative Could Cause You to Leave Your World Behind.

[A button appears prompting Yes or No with arcane-looking symbols]

That’s an odd warning message. Man whoever made this chatbot is really good. Almost feels like one of those isekai stories. Worst case scenario I somehow get hacked. Best case scenario… I don’t know. Eh, I’ve cleaned up a computer virus before I will just run some scans after I click yes and get my result. I click the Yes button.

Abysia: See you soon Ehl! The world you belong to is the one I reside in, Yenope.

My computer screen fills with arcane symbols. Ahh crap, it’s a virus, never heard of this Yenope. I tried to move my arm to close out of the chatbot and realized I couldn’t move. As the symbols arranged themselves on the page they began drawing an arcane diagram. I struggled briefly before just waiting for whatever it is to finish.

After a few minutes of tracing and a light show that might have knocked me out if I had photosensitivity, I began to feel a pulling sensation. The black hole in the middle of the arcane symbols swirled as I was pulled into my computer screen.

At least I won’t have to deal with work on Monday.
