Prologue

In a distant land unknown, where shadows speak and the earth moans, a land lay torn asunder.  Soil, black and barren, void of all organic life. No plants, no animals, and no humans. Instead, what stood in their place were abominable statues of various sizes and shapes, some smaller than a rose petal and others eclipsing mountains. Each figure shared one key feature, the physical aspect of sheened black metal with oozing cracks radiating translucent purple throughout their entire form. These creatures stood sporadically across the lands, with no vacant environment, even on the ocean floor. Except for one location, the edge of a continent-wide crack in the planet, absorbing all nearby light, emitting eariness. If one peered into the feline iris of the world, one would see nothing but their birth dancing with their death. Where reality becomes imagination, and nightmares breathe true. An area lost yet unwantedly found, The Abyss.

Within the abyss, somehow spanned further down from the surface than the planet's diameter, stood two individuals face to face, surrounded by a lake of darkness, still without a ripple. One, a woman with hair blacker than darkness and eyes crystalline purple with a soul-mesmerizing light. She wore a dress that flowed like a river of ink to the base of her ankle, only stopping short of a pair of strikingly metallic shackles. Shackles, whose chains lay broken and scattered around her.

The woman, however, paid no attention to the scene around her as her gaze speared lovingly into the eyes of the man adjacent—golden eyes, which were the only source of light with the haze that encompassed them. The glow wasn’t the brightest—the wicked gleam within obscured the brightness the color naturally held. The shine was barely brilliant enough to show his willowy silver hair and ghostly-pale face. A slight playful smirk sat upon his lips, contrasting her gentle smile. The man carefully grasped the woman’s hand within his own, treating it like a precious jewel prone to shattering.

“So… *⬲@$⧬, do we have a deal?”

The woman shook her head and chuckled. “At this point ⧫⥏#&*, can I even say no?”

The man laughed, “Of course you could, my opal. All I would do is utilize our time in this neverending eternity to convince you again. I think it would only take me a few decades this time.”

The woman rolled her eyes and sighed in defeat. “Fine, yes, we have a deal.”

Upon confirmation, the surroundings quaked as black boulders fell only a few feet from the two. The previously still liquid rippled endlessly.

“He didn’t seem to like that.” The woman chuckled, smug joy visible on her lips.

A golden chain emerged from the center of her chest and fiercely discharged, piercing the man’s sternum. For the first time, her gaze finally shifts from him and towards the chain in wonder as the color illuminates the ever-darkened abyss. However, his gaze remains unaltered and turns gentler as happiness overflows within. Soon he cannot contain the growing joy, and blissful laughter erupts from the volcano of his soul. The woman redrew her attention onto the man in no small amount of surprise.

For the entire time she has known him, never has she seen him this genuinely happy. A small but full smile spreads across her face as she notices his eyes remain unchanged—eyes containing nothing but love with no deception. Something considered an impossibility for all those that knew the man before.

A sluggish feeling begins to influence her though she refuses to budge even an inch. She stares deep into the eyes she adores with a smirk. “You know this means you will never be able to escape me, right?”

The man laughs again as he pulls her into a breathless kiss. Both bodies slowly fade into light particles starting from the tip of their toes. Before their existence completely fades like a memory, they separate, and the man smiles in pride.

“That is the nature of the game.”
