“My Queen, I was told you were taking a meal here, but I am delighted to see Jane here as well. May I join you all, I have some things to relate to Jane, and then there’s two messages received for your eyes only, sealed with wax, and sign by” I interrupted. “The sender might not want everyone hearing it! It might be best to simply hand the Messages over instead.” Looking at me, she realized that perhaps there were people in the room that shouldn’t know the messages were from me. “Ah yes, that’s actually quite wise.” She handed the messages to the Queen, who upon seeing my signature raised one eyebrow, but quickly lowered it. “If you’ll excuse me a moment, I’ll read these in private, the sender was quite insistent that it was for my eyes only after all. I’ll return quickly, these seem to be brief messages.”
“”Of course my Queen”” everyone responded. “Now, Jane, permit me to introduce myself, I am Tamra Desona. Technically I’m a cousin of Alian, well everyone anyway, but we grew up more like Sisters. I’m jealous of her continued youthful appearance, but I do remember the period of Awkwardness lasting much longer as well, so I think she can confirm there’s good, and bad things involved with continued youth. In any event, the Stainless Ingot you brought was given to the Royal Smiths, and they are overjoyed, and very impatient to be taught. Could you possibly swing by the Smithy today, even explaining a little aught to satisfy them for a moment. Perhaps a day or two till the extra material you said is needed arrives.” I chuckled a little. “As it happens, that’s on today’s to do list already, and I sent a runner to collect the needed material already, one Barrel will arrive,…I think in about ten minutes or so, depending on how strong the runners are anyway, and I assume there’s plenty of scrap iron around already too, so we should be pouring the first batch of Ingots today. I’ll be bringing my Crossbow, and Bolts too, as well as my Knuckles, so they’ll have a couple weapons to play with also. Remaining weapons, and Aluminum though, will have to wait for the King’s approval.” “Aluminum, what’s that?” “It’s another metal, only it can’t be used on its own, it has to be made into an alloy, but like Stainless, it doesn’t rust, and in construction, it can do the same job as Steel at one tenth the weight.”
“I’ll not mention that to them just yet, I’m sure they’d be swarming you for details regardless of the King’s approval.” Vanessa returned then, catching my eye alone, and winked. “Apologies, those were urgent, and I’ve dealt with them properly, so no further issues should arise on those fronts.” “’Welcome back my Queen.”” We continued our Meal, with Tamra being served too. “I must say Jane, the improvements to the food are amazing, even the simplest dishes taste orders of magnitude better already. Yet you say you have only just started, I look forward to all the new changes to our food.” I smiled, and noticed that both Jeanette, and Alian were positively glowing with pride in me. “Hey you two, this isn’t something to be proud of, I’m not inventing anything, just teaching it.”
I could see Vanessa’s indulgent smile at her daughter. “We do need to discuss your upcoming wedding my dears. The color scheme should be decided early. Also you’ll need to be fitted for your Gowns.” I flinched. “I can’t do a Gown, no chance, sorry Queen Mother. I do have a design from home that is typically worn by the Men, but can be altered to fit me. Also do you do white for women on their wedding day? It’s supposed to indicate their purity prior to Marriage, but that’s almost never true back home.” “I understand dear, I’ll assign a special seamstress who typically deals with Men’s Clothes, honestly she’s been attempting to convince Women to switch to Trousers for years, so she’ll be ecstatic to make a Wedding Outfit for a Woman, that includes Trousers from the start. You two though, I assume are intending to wear Gowns. Also, we don’t have any tradition about White for Brides, just something nice is all. So colors, what do you intend Jane, for your outfit’s main color?” “Ah well, typically what I want would be mostly black, with a white undershirt, and accent color in the form of a Hand Kerchief in the Jacket Pocket, and perhaps a Red Tie for my neck. Also, I’m used to having short hair, despite how I look now, so I’ll need a Stylist to come up with a Hairstyle once my Outfit is finished, so they know what they’re working with. My Outfit should work beside the girls regardless of the Color Scheme, so I have no input on that front really.”
“Hmm, well Jeanette, Alian perhaps you two can each pick a Color, and that be our overall scheme, along with the Royal Crest?” “Well Mother, I think Blue would be a good color, perhaps a light Blue.” Jeanette spoke then. “Purple, closer to Violet perhaps? I think that would suit the Crest, and the Light Blue that Alian wants.” Vanessa nodded in approval. “Very nice choices. In fact perhaps those choices should be your individual Gown colors, well the base color anyway. They’d look perfect on you after all.” “”Perfect!!”” Well now that’s settled, I think you two should spend the day with the Seamstresses, while Jane deals with the Smithy. Off you run, Jane, a moment before you leave.” Everyone besides Vanessa, Myself, and Tamra left, the younger ones overly excited as they had been all day, though Gabby did hug me, and the other girls fiercely before she left. Once Vanessa was certain they were out of ear shot, she spoke. “Those ring additions are exquisite, I know Alian will adore them, and the symbolism. The concept of an engagement ring is going to be a tradition after this, and the Wedding Band addition too. The Florist also contacted me, Floral centerpieces have never been done either. It’s perfect. I’ll relay the color scheme we just decided on today so she has the time to design something well in advance of the day. Tamra, let’s continue with Queen’s Eyes only messages after this, anything Wedding related. It will cover for Jane’s actions so they’re a surprise on the day alright?” “So that’s what those were about, I’m sorry for almost spoiling it Jane truly!” “No problem, it was avoided, and you didn’t intend any harm. Making sure Jeanette didn’t figure me out with the Flower Centerpieces was a trick, if she hadn’t stepped over to another stall before I asked, I don’t think I could have managed it. She didn’t know about the Wedding bands, but she saw the engagement rings, though she didn’t know why I was buying them at the time.”
“Well that’s all for me, best not keep the Smiths waiting any longer, Tamra, would you guide her please?” “Certainly my Queen.” We both Bowed before leaving the room. “Mind if I stay for the demonstration on making the Stainless? I’m interested in the Weapons too, if you don’t mind.” “Not at all, the more people learning at the same time, the better the understanding over all. Since you can refresh each other’s memories. I take it you’re somewhat involved with the Smiths, even if unofficially.” Tamra nodded. “I am, I am usually responsible for their material acquisitions, BUT…I actually like the processes, and that Crossbow, who wouldn’t want a weapon that saved the King, even if it isn’t the same one.” Wasting no time, we moved to the Smithy. The reaction to everything was priceless. Wonder, irritation, excitement, rage even. All the Smiths, and their apprentices were wrapped in the demonstration, and if I had any skill in the craft myself, it wouldn’t have surprised me to have someone attempt to kill me out of self reproach, and feeling inadequate. “Thank you for the demonstration. I take it you don’t intend to offer any advice on the working, only the material itself, and a few designs?” “Well even the designs are rough. I leave it to masters to perfect the rough drafts I provide. It’s only luck that I studied the process of making Stainless in my studies as a youth, oh and to the Smiths, realize I’m actually in my Forties, I’m not the teen I appear to be.” A lot of the animosity I sensed before eased, realizing I wasn’t some punk kid, but actually a mature adult with only some tidbits of information to share. “Forgive our Rude expressions earlier, I expect you understand it, since you’ve explained your situation perfectly to relieve the situation. Will you be sharing any other things? It’s a little frustrating still that you knew things we didn’t, but is there perhaps a reason for it?” “Ah well as to sharing anything else, that is at the King’s Discretion. The reason I know more than you, is because my people are a few centuries advanced from your current level of technology. This Nation, which is now my Home, is in what we call the Early Medieval Age. That’s the age of crude Steel, but the Weaponry hasn’t evolved even to the peak of that Era. I have a rather long list of Weapons that fit your Tech level, not to mention ones from far above. I can’t describe everything to a level that would be useable, but enough that I could force an early advancement. Problem with that though, is that it’s sort of like giving a sword to a toddler. Either he can’t use it at all, or else he will destroy too much before he learns to control the thing. I can’t see the future, so the King needs to decide if the risk is worth the reward. Personally I don’t see lifting us up to the limit of the Medieval age, since you already understand the principals involved, but even that might have negative effects if handled poorly.” The Smiths were now concerned, the thought that knowledge could harm their Nation, rather than help it was new.
“Knowledge you haven’t earned is the problem. Having Stainless Steel, well it’s really no different than Steel, as you’ve seen, it’s just the next refinement. A bigger investment to produce it, but it’s still Steel in the end. Crossbows are just a minor change from a Bow, which you already use heavily, even if they’re cruse in comparison to the ones I could teach you to make. Knuckle weapons, are just an addition for unarmed combat specialists, and ultimately useless for anyone who uses a Proper Weapon, which has a longer reach. Even a Dagger can beat Knuckles if you’re skilled. Those ideas won’t really change anything you see?” The Smiths nodded, it was true, the new Weapons, though unique, weren’t hugely different, it was instantly understood, and their knowledge and skill was what made the Stainless useful, not anything I had, or hadn’t told them. “Well, we shall await the King’s decision on any new things, and trust in his wisdom to not give us anything we aren’t ready for.” With that, Talma and I left the Smithy, having spent a few good hours uplifting the Smiths knowledge base, we were a little Sweaty. “Shall we go to the Gardens? The Children are most likely running around there.” “Sure, that sounds good, Gabby will like to give us Hugs about now I expect. I’m so glad she’s getting along with those girls. The Bunny Girls are just so Precious, and they are so cute with Gabby’s Fox nature. I’m going to lose it if Gabby is chasing them though!” “Why?” “Oh, back home, Foxes are animals, not people. Four footed predators, while Bunnies also animals, are prey animals, and a particular target of Foxes. So seeing my adorable adopted Fox Girl daughter chasing two cut Bunny Girls at high speeds, I’m not going to be able to not laugh.” Wide eyed surprise.
“Does that mean we all have animal counterparts in your home?” I nodded my head. “Yes, though the details are being kept secret. I actually find it curious that you call yourselves by the same root name. A fox is a fox, a tiger is a tiger. Tigers are great cats by the way, they’re actually heavier than I am. They prey on things my size. Lions are technically bigger, but they’re also less energetic. They live in extreme heat areas though, so they conserve energy as much as possible. If they aren’t Hunting, Guarding, or Fucking, they’re sleeping.” Shock at my crude words, only paled to the shock of the information about my home country’s wildlife. “Most of my personal experience with those animals, were in zoos though. More often than not, their origins were other countries, and I never hunted, so I didn’t have reason to encounter the local once either, like the Cougar. It’s another Big Cat, tawny fur, and a roar that’s more of a scream, quite disturbing to hear, but they’re beautiful deadly creatures. They’re Claws are actually larger than mine if I’m honest. Probably weight the same as me, if not a little more too.” At that moment, I burst into laughter, because as I had predicted, Gabby was merrily chasing her two Bunny girl friends, her Fox tail wagging merrily behind her. When she heard my Laughter though, she pounced on me for a hug. “I’m having so much fun Mother Jane!” “I’m glad Sweetheart, don’t let us interrupt, I’ll find a place to sit and watch.” I returned her hug tightly though, and snuck in a kiss on her cheek. The bunny girls looked a little Jealous. “Hugs are free you know, and I opened my arms. They nervously, but eagerly accepted the embrace, and I figured why not, and kissed each girl on a cheek. “Now off you all go, burn off all that energy ok!”
The Maid whose children these Bunny girls were, happened to be nearby, and at my display, she decided to follow suit. Giving each of the three girls her own hug, and cheek kiss. “Thank you for your favor to my daughters Milady! I hope you don’t mind my doing likewise with yours!” “The only thing I mind, is being called Milady even one second before I have to. At least until the Wedding, I’m just Jane ok,…Please!” “Of Course, I didn’t think, you must be overwhelmed with all the Royal Treatment seeing as how you weren’t a Noble.” “Well the service itself isn’t a problem, because high class Hotels, of which I have stayed at a few, have similar standards, but they don’t defer to you, they’re just professional, they’re service workers, not servants. There is a distinction, despite the similar sounding names. Service workers are equals to the Guests they serve, they’re being paid to provide the service, but once they’re off work for the day, that behavior is gone, replaced with the same attitudes their guests had all day long. A Waitress at a Restaurant will plaster a smile on her face while dealing with a stuck up pig at work, then as soon as her shift is over, she might be just as stuck up at a different place herself, without even realizing she’s being just as bad as her own guest earlier.”
This revelation between servants that she knew, and service workers that Jane knew was startling. “So it’s the Nobility itself you’re avoiding, not the services we offer?” I nodded. “Exactly, I’m a normal citizen at heart. Actually, I’m a foreigner when all is said and done. If I thought I could have avoided this, and been a Citizen, without anyone making a fuss every time I came to a village, town, or city, I wouldn’t be here at all. Though, I genuinely love Alian already, so that would have been a major sacrifice, yet if I had never met her, well I wouldn’t have known what I was missing. Still, Alian want’s to be a Mother, and nobody else was going to let her, so I wouldn’t want to rob her of that either. In the end, me being forced into the Noble Society is a good thing all around, but I don’t have to like it.” The Maid was confused by my words. “Why don’t you like the idea of being a Noble, I’ve often Dreamed I was secretly a Tiger, but some spell or other had hidden my features, and once I broke it I would be welcomed with open arms.” She laughed self deprecatingly at herself. “Because I have to place every Man, Woman, and Child’s well being above my own; to always strive to improve life for the Majority. I can’t ignore things, and must see the consequences of every action I take, every technology, or technique I reveal. I can’t just do whatever pleases me so long as it’s within my personal abilities. A true Noble is a Slave to the People, much more so than any actual Slave, who must only serve a single master, or family. I will have to serve Everyone.” Dawning realization of the True meaning of Nobility was clear across the Maid’s face. “I never considered it from anything like that perspective.” Tamra also looked thoughtful.
“By that reasoning Jane, would that mean the King is the ultimate slave?” “Yes Tamra, that’s exactly it. Not meaning any disparagement, but when absolutely everyone else must be place above yourself in terms of welfare, that’s pretty much being a Slave to the People. Not that the King is ever told what to do, or given orders. But he Orders himself to suck it up, and do what needs doing, instead of self indulging. Even our Wedding coming up, isn’t for us, or him, or his wife, it’s for the People.” “I just now understand how stupid it is to envy the King and Queen. Not that I ever did, but others have, I’ve heard enough to know that, yet now I can see they were utter fools!” Tamra shook her head in disgust at those fools she was thinking of. “Yeah, the only people who enjoy being a Ruler, are evil despots who just want to crush others spirits. There’s a big difference between Ruling, like a Despot, and Leading like a King.” Vanessa, and Donican had just come into the Garden as I finished my Statement. A look of gratitude was on both their faces. “I’ve never been able to explain that concept myself Jane, I thank you for your understanding of the true burdens of the Crown. Also that you didn’t try to flea the responsibilities, but came to us regardless of knowing what it actually means. That level of Bravery is rare indeed. I’m even prouder that you will soon be my daughter than I already was!” I bowed in respect to the King. “Your Majesty is a good King, I could tell, your worry for your People’s future is palpable. I’ll need to discuss some things for the Smiths to get your decision on what should, and shouldn’t be shared.”
“Come Sally, let us depart, the King and Queen don’t need to worry about us spreading anything they deem unacceptable by accident, best be out of ear for the time being. You can set yourself in line of sight, and call the girls to stay close to where you are as well.” The two left us to talk, and I described several weapons, and the concept of Aluminum, also sheet extruders, the concept of a screw, and nuts. Then Leaf Springs for the Carriages, to which Adel had relayed that such a concept existed, but not clearly enough. I also explained all the Siege, and anti siege engines I knew of. Then also indoor plumping, flushing toilets, and the chip seal road using Tar. “Well I can easily approve all of those weapons for Royal use, and a few for Adventurer’s use, the Aluminum I don’t foresee being a problem either, as it will provide a cheap building material that is much more durable than wood. The Leaf springs I certainly want to be produced. Once you describe them to the Smiths, they can talk with the Carriage Wrights to get measurements, for the Modified Carriages. Screws I certainly approve of, and the Nut/Bolt idea. The sheet extruders are also of no concern, and only a positive. As to the Chip Seal road, and the Plumbing projects, I’ll begin with the Roads I think, and slowly improve the shipping. Also that Postal service, combined with the Stage Coach is a great idea. I’ll also approve any of the anti siege weapons, but not the siege ones. Until and unless they are required through no fault of our own that is. Let’s not push our offense without cause.” “Are those enough of a Knowledge dump for a single day your Majesty?” He laughed heartily. “Well I think if you stop with just that, and don’t visit the Kitchens, my Wife will have both our heads. Otherwise I’d say yes. Take Tamra, and let the Smiths have their treat first. Then off to the Kitchens if you please.” I bowed in respect, and waved to Tamra so we could return to the Smithy.
“Back already?” I smiled. “With several weeks worth of new concepts for you to play with. Do you have a large slate, with some chalk?” “Certainly, over here.” I took the chalk, and first wrote the recipe for Aluminum, and then diagrammed the sheet extruder, and threading tools, followed by the leaf springs, and then started the laborious task of diagramming all the anti siege weapons, and other weapons including a Compound Bow, specifying it for Military use only, until the King’s approval changes. Despite the size of the Slate, it was very full before I was done, on both sides no less, so I was directed to a second slate, which I also filled, thinking it wasn’t going to be possible to do everything, I was alerted to the fact that the first slate full had been copied onto parchment, and erased, so I kept going back and forth until eventually I was done. “Now, before Dinner, I have to visit the Kitchens, and start writing recipes, ugh, my hand’s already cramping.” The head Smith laughed at my pain. “Well you deserve it for having too much Smith craft knowledge! Off with you, I can manage this much now. I can see what you meant about rough knowledge, and designs.” Still laughing as we left, the Smith started bellowing to his subordinates to start assembling prototypes of everything they could.
Dinner was already finished when we entered the Kitchens, so I didn’t have to write after all. Instead I dictated as the Head cook took notes. She had acquired quite the stack of Parchment. I told her to keep several recipes aside for the Queen’s selection for the Wedding Banquet. She was overjoyed at the thought of using any, or all of those dishes during the Wedding Banquet, and promised to do just that. I apologized for not telling her anymore, but my brain had already turned to mush for the day. “Nonsense Mila, I mean Jane, this is already a huge list of new Recipes. The detail in their preparation instructions alone is astounding, though I’m not certain how I’m to know the temperature of the Oven for baking.” “Ah, I’ll get with the Smiths on that, to see about making some proper oven thermometers. A simple heat spring connected to a needle with a face plate for the temp numbers is simple enough.” I quickly explained number characters, to her delight, and told her that the new Thermometer would use them. “Thank you very much, that will improve all our baking, to think such a thing was possible.” “Oh right, I forgot all about kitchen tools entirely. So much more stuff to explain at the Smithy, UGH!” Shaking my head at the seemingly endless knowledge to relay, I left the Kitchen for the Dining Hall.
The meal was rather good, and the mood was jovial. Darnel was extremely enthusiastic about the improvements to the food, even more than yesterday. “Truly, everything I’ve eaten since coming home is the absolute best I’ve ever had, and I thought it was good before!” I chuckled good naturedly. Alian and Jeanette beamed with misplaced pride, or at least I thought it was misplaced. “Just wait for the Wedding Banquet if you thin,…” The doors opened gaining all attention. “Father! What’s this I hear about Alian getting married to a Woman?! No Woman could possibly be worthy of her!” “Jenson, you overstep yourself! Besides, she can beat Darnel in the sparring grounds nine times out of ten, and by his own admission, the times he does get a win are pure luck. She’s gold tier at the adventurer’s guild. Which as you know well is several ranks above yours, and it’s only been four days since she registered. Even you can’t argue with her strength, and skill. You also don’t make judgments about your Sister’s choices, it isn’t allowed, as you well know. You behavior, as always, is shameful, and a disgrace to all Nobles everywhere. I am on the verge of deciding you’re a lost cause, and disinheriting you. Jane knows more about being Noble, without wanting it than you who was born to it, and craves it. This saddens my heart, but it seems I may have no choice in the matter.” Jenson, the second Prince, froze in horror at the very public rebuke, and the possibility of being stripped of his Nobility. “Father, surely you can’t be serious!” “Exactly what makes you think I’m not? I have coddled you too much, you’re a perfect example of having been spoiled by my excessive leniency. I must blame myself for not being strict, while at the same time, clearly your elder Brother, and Sister were excellent role models, despite the same upbringing. Thus you have chosen to be improper, and the exact opposite of Noble, which is to be self sacrificing, to put literally everyone in the Nation above yourself.” “I see I was right to take action before, you’ve clearly gone senile, you all can die, and I’ll take a firm hand of the Nation as is proper!” He drew his sword, with clear intent. I surged into action, without a weapon, but I didn’t care, nobody was going to hurt my Family, not even a lost Son. My feet, and fists were a blur, and before he could blink, he had been disarmed, and pummeled into unconsciousness. I stood over him with my Claws exposed, tensed for the slightest twitch of his muscles. As I panted, with pure RAGE boiling off me, barely resisting the Killing blow, the King himself wrapped his arms around be, half to restrain me, and half in a gentle embrace of a fully loving Father. “He will be beheaded in the Morning, you needed sully you own hands any further. I took two stumbling steps backward, supported by the King, as Guards removed the soon to be executed Prince. “I feel so horrible that something I predicted as a distant Future problem came to be such a current issue. How could such a clearly good King, and Loving Father be cursed with such a Damaged Son. I couldn’t let him hurt anyone, but now he himself is going to Die, and that will still hurt you all!” I turned, and burst into wracking sobs on the King’s shoulder, as everyone in the room looked on with pride, and sadness.
“It’s clear to me, now more than ever, that your coming is a true blessing to our Nation, but more importantly our Family. Both would have been destroyed without you. I think perhaps Jenson was the root problem, and head of this conspiracy. We will be sure to discover all his other supporters, if any, and deal with them as well, and from them, the entirety of this rebellion. This is a tragic situation, that ended in the best possible way. Darnel, I’m afraid you will need to verify that his Mission actually got tended to, I suspect it wasn’t even begun, intending it to disrupt us during his actions.” Darnel nodded. “I will address all of his Missions, to ensure they were all finished, or will be. Thank you Jane, for all of us, and his actions are his, as are the consequences.” He gave me a kiss on the cheek, as he left the room. “Summon the Mage Breakers for the prince, tell them not to be gentle, that his mind breaking will be a Blessing in the Morning, since he won’t see the end coming. That’s the most I can spare my Son for his act of Treason.”
My girls and I departed the Dining Hall after that, none of us having much of an appetite. Gabby clung to me, sensing just how broken I felt. All four of us piled onto Alian’s bed in a pile, just clinging to each other for comfort, not bothering to undress, or have Gabby leave to her own room. We just all clung together quietly weeping, desperate for contact with safe people, those who love us. Gabby was almost a wreck herself, her Fox ears drooped down, tears streaming down her face. She had been frightened by Jenson, but even more by my own ferocious attack, and then my breaking down was probably the worst thing I could have done to her, she needed me to be strong, and I just couldn’t do it. We all fell asleep in that way, not even waking for breakfast. It was noon before any of us stirred.
When we finally did drag ourselves out of the Bed, it was nearly lunch time. We changed clothes without bathing, since we hadn’t woken for the Maids. We left for a private dining room, and picked at some lunch. Not that we were hungry, really. I determined to go to the execution in any event. “Gabby, I have to see this through, but you don’t need to watch. You should go to the Garden, or the Library, and wait. We’ll come right after that.” She shook her head. “No, I’m coming too!” I shook my head right back. “You don’t need to see someone die, not like that!” “I’ve seen people die before, and he’s a Bad Man, I need to know he’s Dead, and can’t hurt you anymore! It’s too Scary otherwise!”
I caved, she had defeated my best intentions. The execution was swift, his mind broken during the night, he had nothing to say. The charges were read for formality’s sake, and the ax came down. It wasn’t pretty, but not as gruesome as I’d expected. Still my gorge rose, and I almost lost what little I had managed to eat earlier. We left after paying our respects to the King and Queen. They were sad clearly, but stood proud, and refused to shed a tear over him, at least not in public. I had no doubt that they would weep all over again in private.
It was nearly a week before any of us had broken the depression over this incident. Though we didn’t quite seclude ourselves as we had before. Instead much time was spent ambling through the gardens, and diving into studies for the girls, either reading and writing for Jeanette, and Gabby, or Math for everyone else. By the end of our week’s long depression everyone had managed to understand basic algebra adequately enough to be carrying on. The two writing students were fully competent with the simple uses of the characters, and starting on the advanced combinations, and altered meanings dependent upon context. It would take months, or years before they were truly adept, but they could manage now. It was at that point that the Queen informed us that our Wedding would be held within the Week. Darnel had managed to correct his Brother’s oversights, deliberate or otherwise. Apparently, unbeknownst to him, there had been some decent people assigned to him, and they had mostly finished the work without him.
“So despite his attempts at disrupting proper rule, he didn’t even manage to damage anything? Doesn’t make it hurt less though.” I tried to smile at the Queen, but I just felt too bad for her to really mean it yet. One of her own Sons had attempted to kill all of us after all. Vanessa hugged me tightly. “I feel disgusted at myself for not being as sad as I should be. He’s literally never hidden his disdain for anyone, including us, but like you warned us, we felt guilty for not paying him proper attention, and coddled him with everything. I don’t even think he loved us as an infant, it always felt cold holding him, no matter how much I wanted to genuinely love him, I just never could.” I thought for a Moment, before I answered. “Sounds like he had a Chemical Imbalance in his brain, and it prevented him from having any empathy. So it actually wasn’t your fault, just very, VERY bad luck. He was a Sociopath, and that’s not learned, it’s how he was born. We can’t even screen for that back in my old country, but we’ve recorded plenty about Sociopaths over the years. Quite a few came from Royal lines too. Too much inbreeding.” Vanessa started back a bit. “Inbreeding, what do you mean?”
“Ah, well the closer related two people are when they have offspring, the more likely something will go wrong. Royal lines tended to try remaining “Pure” so even siblings would Marry in order to not “Thin the blood”. This lead to all manner of birth defects, some visible, some not so much. In normal situations a disfigured, or mentally challenged person won’t be able to have children, because who would want to, but if it’s a Royal, they’d buy wives, and concubines, and force the issue, even if the man was a drooling mess. The bad traits can even hold on a generation or two before manifesting. I can only imagine something similar happened here, what with all the Nobility being Tigers, you’re all basically one big family. Which makes my contribution much more important, either giving, or receiving. If I didn’t have this block in my mind over it, then I would need to bear a child myself too, just to spread the genes a little.” Vanessa was shocked. “So it is our fault? The King, is my Brother, not even a Half Brother, we have the same Parents, but there wasn’t any other choice at the time.” “Oh, WOW, that’s, I’m sorry, I’m going to need some time to process that. You didn’t know though, so you can’t really blame yourselves. Might be a good idea to make a decree that no Tiger can Marry another though, after us that is, owing to the need to expand the bloodlines, not refine them. Then if a Not Tiger man Marries a Tiger girl, we can create a new name. Didn’t I hear that any child of a Tiger will always be a Tiger, regardless of the other Parent?”
Nodding the Queen responded. “Indeed, and I fully agree. Knowing what we now know, Donican will make that decree immediately after your Wedding, and explain the reasons to everyone. Even making new lesser Noble houses is worth it to prevent a repeat of this travesty. I must excuse myself, Donican must know of this at once, so we may begin the legal documents for the decree.” With that the Queen left swiftly. “Jane, will, will my children be alright?!” Asked Alian fearfully. “Yes, I am completely unrelated to you, as is Jeanette. So regardless of which of us gives you children, they will have stronger genes to work with. After the new Decree, we can weed out all those bad traits within ten generations at the outside, and probably less. Seems like this is a recent development, or there would be a darker history in your Kingdom.”
I got rather depressed again, having just crushed my new Parents with the Knowledge that their familial bond is most likely the cause of Jenson’s issues, and wanted a furry companion to snuggle with. “I really want a kitten right now!” I closed my eyes, and felt my desire for a Kitten take on an intensity that perplexed me. Before I could attempt to puzzle through this sensation, I heard gasping from everyone, and my eyes popped open. In front of my eyes was an intricate sigil. Glowing light flared, and even the Castle servants walking by startled, and stared at the sight, as twenty kittens of various breeds, and colors manifested within the center of the Sigil. Each one freshly weaned, and ready for solid foods. My Heart melted instantly, and I reached out snagging up what was clearly a Bangle Tom. “What shall we call you huh little guy? With that Golden Fur, I think maybe you’re a Midas, what do you think?” The adorable fluff gave a happy Meow, both Alian, and Jeanette seemed to feel it in their bones, that this little thing had just claimed us. “Jane, are these what you called Cats?!” I nodded happily. “But they’re so small!” I laughed, startling my new Master. “They’re babies, barely old enough to leave their mothers. The thing is, I think I Summoned them just now. Is Summoning Magic even a Thing here, cause that’s the only explanation I can come up with.” Both Alian, and Jeanette shook their heads, as they too started petting and loving on Kittens, though none truly called to us like Midas did. However the Rabbit eared Maid wasn’t in the same boat. “Milady, I can’t help myself, it’s like this little is calling to me. What even are these?” She picked up a Grey Tabby, with obvious maternal affection. “That is a Grey Tabby Cat, a Female too, and clearly she owns you, same as Midas owns us. They’re predators, so any meat is good, but they’re still kittens, so it needs to be minced for them. Back in my old Country, we have pet foods specifically for cats, and even kittens specifically, available in shops all the time. Here though, we’re going to have to do a little work.”
Gabby was petting on one particular Kitten also. A little Russian Blue female. Though she clearly liked all of them, and Midas was already precious to her, this little one clearly wanted her. “Gabby, be careful with naming her, Cats must be named after authority figures, real or imagined. If you name her something silly like shadow, or snowball, she’ll be very upset, and likely pee your bed, with you in it.” Gabby looked at me in surprise. “I get to name her?!” I nodded. “Clearly she owns you, and as her slave, it’s your duty to disclose her illustrious name to the masses.” She giggled, but never the less took the job seriously. “In that case, I think Van, after the Queen, and because it looks like she can Vanish whenever she wants.” Van gave her own happy Meow of contentment, and started kneading Gabby’s arm. Alian cooed in total cute overload. “We need shallow boxes, about two inches deep, maybe three, maybe two feet wide by three feet long for every person who takes a Kitten, well for every Kitten actually. Then dry clay dust to fill the boxes half way. Then little food, and water dishes for every kitten, they don’t share, like EVER!” The Maid nodded, but paused. “I understand the food and water dishes, but what are the boxes and clay dust for?” I smiled. “Well when you need to relieve yourself, you go to the Privy right, a Cat can’t typically do that, the boxes are their version of a Privy. Usually they instinctively want to Bury their mess. Although they are Predators themselves, they are also on the small side, and thus must hide from larger threats. That’s one way they go about it.”
The Maid went off with her new feline overlord to acquire the requirements for the Kittens. Another servant had clearly ran to tell the King and Queen about this seeming Miracle, and they had sent Darnel to investigate. “What new amazement have you come up with now Sister Mine?” He asked jovially. Then his whole body tensed in surprise at the overwhelming attack of four legged cuteness. Two Kittens demanded his attention, though clearly one was being even more imperious, as if it could smell it’s persons on him, and wanted to leave NOW. “I think you best do as that one says, and take him to the King and Queen, and the other is demanding you specifically, so you’ll have to name her. An Authority figure mind, she owns you, better get used to it. The Rabbit eared Maid, who I still haven’t gotten the name of, is collecting what they’ll need. I’m sure their supplies will be delivered to your, well their chambers.” I told him affectionately. “I do believe this will be good for them,…and me. How did these creatures come to be, and what even are they. Clearly they’re related to the Cat Clan, but I have no clue how.” “Well Cat Clan are named that because they have Catlike features, while these in face ARE Cats.” “Does this mean Tigers are animals as well?” I nodded my head. He grinned, and knelt down to accept his precious burdens. “Well my Lord, and my Lady, let us be off to see the King and Queen.”
It took all of fifteen minutes for every Kitten to claim its Slaves, and about ten more before everyone had their items. “By the way, I never got your name.” “Oh, well, it’s actually Bunny. I tend to not say it, my Parents were quite the Pranksters. My children are Haley and Holy if you were wondering.” “Um well, Bunny, it would be best to place several more of those boxes wherever you think the little overlords might roam indoors. They’ll run everywhere, and get into everything looking for vermin to hunt and kill. I’ll get some toys made up for them, so people can get some of their boundless energy out.” “Yes Jane, I’ll see to it.” Bunny left, with a very contented ball of Fluff curled in her Apron Pocket snoozing.
“Why didn’t you try to Summon a Tiger?” I looked Shocked at Jeanette who had asked. “Because as cool, and beautiful as Tigers are, they don’t stay small enough to carry, they get big enough to carry you in their Jaws. Not Pets, true Predators, same with Wolves, Lions, Pumas, Jaguars, Hyenas, and many others. There’s a Certain level of threat at which they stop being eligible as Pets, and Tigers are WAY above that level.” Jeanette looked a little disappointed. “If we build a Zoo Enclosure for it, and If the King approves of it, then Maybe I’ll try and Summon a Tiger Cub or two. So people can see the Animal form the Nobility resembles. That’s a BIG IF though.”
Apparently, the new Kitten was sufficient of a shock, and source of joy to bring the King, Queen, and their new owner out to hear some details. “My dear, you are just full of surprises! Would you care to enlighten us as to how this came to be? Also, why do you say this one owns us?” I smiled hugely. “Are you daring to deny that you have been taken as slaves then? I doubt he will be very pleased if so. As to how they got here, I think I somehow used summoning magic. Which according to both Alian, and Jeanette doesn’t exist. Who, or Whatever brought me here, has clearly done something to allow me to perform Magic at will. I don’t even know Magic, as it either didn’t exist back home, or else wasn’t known, so couldn’t be taught.” “Well, now you mention it, I do feel like I’m owned, not that I can complain. My Heart just adores him even now. It’s like he’s the second Son I was meant to have. Which is why,…we called him Jen.” Vanessa answered with a tear in her eyes. “As Alian has stated, Summoning Magic doesn’t exist, so having that power is beyond curious. Do you intend to summon anything else?” Asked Donican with a raised brow, while his eyes glistened.
“I don’t your Majesty, though Alian has asked about the idea of getting a couple Tiger Cubs, which would require an enclosure to house them. They’re not pets, and they are dangerous.” Eyes large, the King pondered the idea. “If the cubs could be sent back, I could see it immediately, but as you say, we can’t let them run free. I’ll have to think on it, and perhaps later you’d describe the required enclosure so I can have a more detailed understanding of the decision as a whole. Though even if I do decide to ask for it, it won’t be for many months, if not years into the Future. With those Chip Seal roads, and the Plumbing, and Sewer projects to fund, we can’t justify the expense of building such an enclosure. Earth Mages are fast, but very costly to employ, while standard methods though cheaper by quite a decent margin, take quite a while.” I thought for a Moment. “If the location was selected, I could try the Earth Magic myself. Perhaps it will work for me in the same way, would be a decent test, and even if you decide that Tigers aren’t a good idea, there’s nothing saying the structure couldn’t serve another purpose, or else I just remove it again. I’d rather not try a Magic in a crisis, and find out it won’t work after all. It might mean I can offer even more help, with the Waterworks projects. Manipulating the Earth to form the structures that are needed, while leaving the correct spaces for the equipment.” Donican nodded thoughtfully. “Indeed, there is wisdom in that. Very well, I’ll see about a location for such an enclosure to be created.”
“Why not try something simple? Maybe something for the Kittens use, just to see if it’s something you can work with. Then it’s a matter of the power, rather than the attribute.” I felt like a total idiot, and Jeanette’s very rational suggestion hit like a thunderclap. After picking a good location, and closing my eyes, I envisioned a network of Cat Trees, and ledges. Willing it into being, I opened my eyes to see the Earthen creations rising out of the dirt, and walls. This was different from the sound proofing, as it was creating material, instead of altering it. For all I knew, the walls were being altered by wind, or water instead of the Stone, but this is purely Earth. “Well, that confirms Earth Magic works for me. I thought maybe that’s what I did with the walls, but wasn’t sure.” Vanessa raised her brow. “Walls?” “Ah, I altered the interior structure of Alian’s walls to reduce how much sound can penetrate. It’s called sound proofing, just a unique structure that breaks up the sound so it can’t be heard as easily, if at all. A proper scream would still get through, but even an argument is likely to be unheard.” “You must perform that trick on my Study, as well as the Council Chambers if you please. Sensitive matters get discussed in both locations after all.” I nodded at the King.
“I’ll take care of that,…UGH!” ““Jane!!!”” Alian, and Jeanette worriedly shouted out after my pain filled cry. “You know how I said you’d need to help me for THAT time,…I’d swear I skipped that, and went right past nine months! UGH! Am I really going to have to deal with this every month?!” They looked at each other, then Jeanette asked me to do something odd. “Can you pinch your own arm till you match the pain, and then do the same to my arm?” I did as I was asked, and Jeanette almost laughed out loud. “Oh Love, if that’s all you’re dealing with, you’re lucky.” I looked dumbfounded. “Seriously, it’s worse for you?!” She nodded, now seemingly envious of me. Alian held her own arm out, and I demonstrated for her as well. “Better than mine too Love.” Now curious, the Queen got in on the situation. “Oh dear, you’re quite lucky if that’s the actual level of pain you’re dealing with.” “Hmm, you know, there’s a Water Magic that dulls pain, you haven’t tried using any Water Magic have you?”
I grasped at that potential lifeline, and focused my will on relieving, or eliminating pain. I sighed with relief. “Thank GOD that worked!!!” “You’ll have to tend to me later then Love.” “Me too, not going to pass on pain relief for that.” “Yes dear, I expect every woman will be pestering you for that, I do hope you’ll at least help me though.” I laughed, going from agonizing pain to getting begged for pain relief myself is great, but odd. “I’ll do my best. Also, as I was saying, I’ll do the sound proofing later today. Though first, how do I deal with,…” I looked down rather than say it aloud, and the girl’s eyes widened. “Oh yes, come with us!” This was super awkward. Not only was the problem completely alien to me, but the solutions weren’t what was customary in my old life. Scraps of Rabbit Pelt, or Moss was typical apparently, we had tufts of an absorbent cat tail like plant’s white seed to use. Until they weren’t available for the season at least, then we had to use rags, and clean them. The Maids said they’d tend to that for me, but I declined surprising Alian, and to a lesser degree Jeanette. “I should tend to that myself, if I don’t know how to deal with that, and I’m stuck on an adventure, then what am I supposed to do. Every Woman should deal with their own issues.”
Once I had been setup for success, and presentable again, we went to the King’s Study to alter the walls, and while there, a strong breeze came through the open window. I then realized, that even in the Palace, Glass wasn’t used. As I had finished with the Walls, I focused on the Window, willing two panes of glass to form inside a stone frame with openings for the latches. The King entered just as it finished manifesting. “What’s this?!” “Glass windows.” “Glass, what’s that?!” “Uh,…seriously?!” He just looked at me. “Ok, when you melt sand at high temperatures, and cool it slowly, the result is glass. Depending on the type of sand, you can get various clarities. Then you can add tints to change the colors deliberately. This will keep the wind out much better than shutters, without blocking the light.” “Stupendous!!!, is that the only application?” I shook my head. “Far from it, here.” I Manifested a glass stein on the desk. “OH! This is lovely! I presume this is for drinking.” “Yes, that particular design is called a Beer Stein, obviously for drinking Beer out of, though I suppose if you were serving a Dwarf from a fairy story, it would be the right size for Whiskey.”
“AH, um what are those?” “Types of Alcohol. Fermented drinks that make you drunk. Beer is more of a soft alcohol, while Whiskey is strong, to the point it burns as you drink it. Huh, never noticed the lack of Alcohol on the table. None of that is in my stores of knowledge. I do know about wine though. Not anywhere near enough time to make any for the Wedding though. Unless I can use some sort of aging magic or something.” “Love, what’s Alcohol?!” “Wait, seriously, I can understand not knowing about Glass, but even Cave People understood about fermented drinks! IF, and I mean IF I agree to make Wine at all, it’s going to be reserved for the Royal Families use only, and ONLY on state occasions. The Wine makers would be allowed to sample the taste to ensure it didn’t go bad in the Fermentation process, but otherwise, not even the current King should imbibe any without a socially acceptable reason to share it out. Alcohol makes you Drunk, which in turn reduces your inhibitions, meaning you’ll say, and do things you’ve always been tempted to say, or do, but wouldn’t ever act on. Insulting important people, or acting on lustful desires with say, married people, or those who don’t even know you exist. Just too big a risk to release it to the public, if they aren’t used to it.”
“Indeed, if there’s such issues, I think we should just not make it. I thank you for the explanation though. Learning about your world is always fascinating. To think you not only have such things, but have adapted to function despite them being so concerning.” Well, there’s other uses for Alcohol too. Disinfecting wounds so they won’t get infected for example. That’s a different type of Alcohol though. In fact, apothecaries can use it for several types of topical medicines to keep them fresh longer. I can make a Distillery for that, and teach that method, assuming there’s a need for it.” “That could be a good notion. Perhaps you could speak with our Apothecary they can decide with you on this point. If there’s a recipe that can use it, then you can appropriate the required materials, and setup the, what did you call it, a distillery? Well whatever, I leave that to you, just explain that the Distillery is only for Apothecaries, and not to be discussed with anyone who isn’t in the field.” I nodded in understanding. “Glass will help with the Apothecary too. I’ll setup several containers for them.”
“Oh, and I can build a Greenhouse too!” Everyone looked at me. “Greenhouse?” “A structure that has a sturdy frame, some vents, and all the walls as well as the roof are covered in glass. It keeps it warmer in the winter, and protects anything that grows inside from harsh weather. So foods that wouldn’t normally be available in winter, can grow inside the Greenhouse.” “Stupendous, miraculous in fact. I’ll find a good location. Needs to be inside the walls I think. People will attempt to break in, if the structure was in the city, and if it was outside the city walls, then Monsters are a problem.” “What about a distant farming village, where travelers don’t go? All their fields could be covered, and they can transport the goods like usual. Raise their town wall for them. I can handle that.” “Another excellent idea. Then we’d only need a small one inside the walls for our own use, while the citizens will get fresh foods from the village.”
With that decided, I went on to the Council Chamber, and altered the walls there, installing Glass into the windows as well. Once done with that, I got directions to the Apothecary, and after altering his chamber walls, which confused him until I explained that having conversations with patients in private is always better. Then I proceeded to discuss the distillery, what it did, and how we thought it could potentially preserve topical medicines long enough to be used, rather than making fresh daily. So a whole weeks worth could be produced at once. I went through his recipes for topical medicines, pulling out the ones that would work with alcohol. Then I produced vials, beakers, portion bottles, and various other glass containers. I gave him a list of ingredients needed to make the pure grain alcohol needed, and then went to the Smithy. Once there, I described the window latches that were needed for the new windows, and how many sets were needed. Then asked for specific metals for my distillery.
I was extremely glad to have my new Kitten to snuggle with once the girls and I made it to our bed. We all played, and cuddled with him, as we snuggled, and kissed each other. What with my new issue, and the exhaustion of using so much Magic, and relaying so much information. My Cramps had returned twice, causing me to stop in my tracks, as I desperately used the pain relieving magic. The Bath in the Morning couldn’t come quickly enough. Luckily, my time ended prior to the Wedding, unluckily though, Jeanette’s had decided that moment to start. “Is this going to be too much for you? I thought I would be the cripple here.” Jeanette smiled. “I’ll be fine, no way am I going to miss this, even if I wasn’t supposed to be up there.” “Ok, just tell me the instant the pain returns, I’m not letting you suffer today of all days!” “Oh I will Love, believe me I will!”
The hall was amazing! The colors were on point, amazingly beautiful, just like my girls. I waited nervously in my custom black tuxedo. I had a Red Kerchief, and a deep blue necktie. The girls hadn’t seen my outfit yet, nobody but my Seamstress had seen it. She was overjoyed, exactly as the Queen had said. I entered the hall, and approached the Dias to stand ready by Darnel, who had agreed to be my Best Man, which was a completely alien concept. He was proud, and touched to be selected for the honor. The Queen had relayed the tradition of the Father walking his Daughter down the aisle past the attendants of the ceremony. As it happened, to my surprise, Jeanette had managed to get a Message to her parents, and her own Father was immediately roped into the Ceremony, and the Queen made her Mother stand beside her. Both Fathers were Grinning ear to ear at being beside their daughters, to hand them to their new Wife. The whole something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue thing didn’t exist here either, but the notion had amused the Queen, and she had snuck all of it into each girl’s Dress. The Borrowed items were Jewelry from other families, that were all too happy to be represented in the ceremony. Though they didn’t have any recognized religion, there was a Master of Ceremonies, who officiated over Noble Weddings. She stood tall and proud as the Fathers delivered their daughters to the stage, then went to stand by their wives.
“Lords, Ladies, and assorted guests. We are gathered here today, to join these three Women as Wives. May all bear witness.” The whole crowd applauded. “There are some,… Interesting vows to read. Jane, you’re first, since it’s your tradition.” With that, I took one of the addition rings from the Pillow, and with a deep breath, I approached Alian, being the Royal in this equation, I had to do hers first, or so I told myself. “I Jane Rae Richards, take you Alian, as my lawfully wedded Wife, to have, and to hold, in sickness, and in health, for rich, or for poor, until death do us part. Will you accept this ring as proof of my Vow, and our entwined lives?” She smiled, stunned at this gesture, as I slipped the new band, right onto the first. “I do.” I then took the second ring, repeating the Vow, but altering it to include Alian. “I Jane Rae Richards, on behalf of myself, and Princess Alian Marion, take you Jeanette, as our Lawfully Wedded Wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for rich or poor, till death do us part. Will you accept this ring, as a symbol of our joint Vow?” I slipped the ring on her finger. “I do” “Do the two of you agree, to place your own Token on my finger, for the world to see the proof of our vow?” Both girls shared the duty of placing the ring on my own finger. Adlibbing, Alian spoke. “I Princess Alian Marion, Happily take you Jane Rae Richards, and you Jeanette, as my Lawfully Wedded wives, to have, and to hold, in sickness and in health, for rich, or poor, until death do us part.” Jeanette followed. “I Jeanette, take you Princess Alian Marion, and you Jane Rae Richards, as my Lawfully Wedded Wives, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for rich or for poor, till death do us part.” “As the vows have been stated, and witnessed, by the powers vested in me by the Royal Family, I hereby pronounce these women as Wives, in sight of all present.”
The attendants of the ceremony all applauded as they stood from their seats. “I Princess Alian, on behalf of my Wives, do thank you all for coming and witnessing our Wedding.” “I King Donican also thank you all for attending. We will now adjourn to the Banquet Hall.” We left the Dias, and waited for the guests to reach the Banquet hall before we entered. I had explained this intentional delay. The family of the participants are always seated last, and the people who were just married would enter the room afterwards, and be first to be served, followed by the King, and Queen regardless of their relation to the newlyweds, then their families. The guests were floored by the food. Even the Nobles who had eaten improved food for some time, weren’t expecting the even more improved wedding dishes. Everyone was offered choices for their dishes, or to have some of everything. Everyone took everything, no surprise. When the cake arrived, the stunned silence, including that of the Queen, and my Girls was priceless. I whispered in the Girl’s ears that it was our duty to cut the cake for the Family before taking our own pieces. We all three went to stand by the cake, all taking a hand on the Knife together as we jointly cut the first pieces. The servers took each freshly cut piece to one of the Family. King Donican first, Queen Vanessa second, Jeanette’s Father third, her Mother fourth, then Darnel, Cassandra, and lastly Adel. Then we cut our own three pieces, and stepped away handing the knife to the server. Cakes were never a thing until now, since Sugar hadn’t been created yet. I cheated though, using fruit sauce, and honey as a substitute, rather than dealing with the sugar beets yet.
“Astounding!” Everyone was equally stunned. I however sighed in disappointment. “What’s wrong?” “Well it’s not the same as back home, since I haven’t made Sugar yet. It’s good, but not AS GOOD as it could have been, sorry.” “Don’t be, this is the best desert I’ve ever had!” All of the Family, Jeanette’s included nodded in affirmation. “Truly Jane, this is astounding! I know we haven’t officially met, but I hope you’ll accept me as your Mother.” “Yes Mom, I accepted you, and Dad here, the second I stood up there. I hope you won’t be disappointed with me as your Daughter though.” “Nonsense Jane, I couldn’t be happier to get an adorable new daughter, let alone two ha ha ha!” My even newer Father replied. “My name is Kent by the way, and my wife is Tammy.” Their cat features were tabby like, and ablaze with Joy. “Well, I should introduce your Grand Daughter then.” Their eyes bulged in surprised. I laughed loudly, then pointed to Gabby who was between us. “Didn’t you wonder why there was an adorable Fox Girl sitting between us? This is Gabby, our adopted daughter, and thus your Grand Daughter.” Dawning understanding, and joy lit their faces. “Well the word grand daughter did startle us, thinking it wasn’t anywhere near nine months since you could have met, Jeanette was home for a visit only five months past. Not that I would have been upset if you had somehow managed it early, but this is much less startling. You’re welcome at my home anytime Gabby. Though, it’s not a Palace, I’ll put you to work, I run a Farm after all. Had to hire people to tend the Farm for this trip. Only took a week to get here, so it isn’t too expensive, but everyone works on a Farm!”
I jolted in surprise at the word Farm, and only a week away. “Dad, is your community off the beaten track?!” He looked at me in surprise. “I suppose it is at that. Unless they’re specifically coming to us for Produce, or with a Message, nobody ever comes to us, why do you ask?” “Before that, is it a large community, or pretty small, where everyone helps everyone, and you defend each other?” “Small, definitely.” “Perfect, Your Majesty, who better to entrust?” The King nodded. “I agree, not only is the location exactly what we want, but having Family to entrust makes it even better.” I Beamed. “Ok Dad, I can’t discuss this here, you’ll be hired for something, your whole community in fact. Government subsidized with reduced taxes for maybe up to ten years.” Kent’s eyes practically popped out of his head. “I hadn’t considered reduced taxes, but if we’re affecting the entire community, and requiring secrecy, then it makes sense. Either two years of no taxes, or ten at half taxes.” Kent responded immediately “The half for ten years is the better idea.” Donican nodded. “I’ll tend to the paperwork before you leave. I assume if you agree, Jane and Jeanette will be going with you, probably Gabby too, unless I’m much mistaken. I assume the project will take some days for Jane to complete.” I was excited. “I hope you don’t mind such an early intrusion.” “I’m certainly not staying behind Father, Jane and Jeanette can protect me. They’re my Wives, and I don’t intend to be separated for such a long time so soon.” Sighing the King Nodded. “In that case, I’d ask that only my detail come your Majesty. With a change of clothes, they can appear like adventurers, and they’d act like it. Then I think I can use light magic, to alter my, and Alian’s appearance so we don’t look like Tigers while traveling. That’s the best security we could have anonymity.” “Hmm, if you can do the light magic, then I’ll allow it.” I focused inward, and soon my Tiger ears, and tail had altered to match Jeanette’s patterning, with minor variations. “Oh my, you look like Jeanette’s sister now.” Tammy gushed with joy!
“Is that just an expression, or do I have a Sister to meet, what about other siblings?” The look of a proud mother was evident on Tammy’s face. “Well I only have Jeanette, but Mira has one of each. So you have a Brother, and Sister to meet. Though Mira is Wolf Clan, so you look more like Jeanette, so it’s kinda like I really had two children, instead of only Jeanette. Mitchell is twelve, and Darla is sixteen. Their little wolf tails were so cute as babies!” “I look forward to meeting all of them. Family is precious to me, and I will always come to your aid, anytime, anywhere. With such adorable sounding siblings, I’m surprised, and grateful that Jeanette managed to force herself to leave home.” “Well I felt awkward, since Dad and Mira are,…active.” “Ah, but you left them to deal with it?! I mean I get it, but I’d feel bad about leaving them behind. Especially if it isn’t discreet.” Jeanette blushed. “I did feel bad, but I couldn’t take them with me, knowing I didn’t have any place for them to be safe while I worked.” “You didn’t feel like you had to leave did you sweaty?!” “No Dad, it’s just, well, I didn’t want to see, or hear that. I’m sure Darla, and Mitchell would love to get away too, not because they don’t want to be with you, but because they don’t want proof of how they came into being.” “Well, since it was that bad for you, then perhaps, if it’s ok, maybe there’s a place for them here?” Tammy asked with a mix of hope, both for, and against the idea. “Certainly, they’re family, and Jane is already teaching Math, Reading, and Writing. Those skills will help them in any line of work, including farming. Record Keepers are always needed. If they choose to come back with Jane, they’ll be given rooms right next to Alian’s.” Tammy, and Kent both smiled. “Thank you your Majesties.”
“I have to say, even though I’m in a multi party marriage myself, it’s going to keep surprising me that it’s so acceptable. They’re extremely rare back home, and even then, they aren’t legally recognized. Only the main couple is legally married. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy about the Laws being what they are, but it’s still surprising to me.” This intelligence surprised Kent and Tammy, but they took it in stride. The girls and I departed from the Hall ahead of everyone else. Gabby had agreed to spend the evening with Darnel, rather than sleeping off of our chambers. She was feeling much more safe in the Palace, so a night or two alone wouldn’t bother her over much she said. Though Jeanette couldn’t fully participate, she didn’t hold back either. Specifically, Jeanette demanded we attempt to impregnate her,…together right then. “I know it might not take, cause it’s that time, but who knows, maybe it will, and I really don’t want to wait even one more second to have our little one in my arms!” She was passionate, and it only took one look at Alian to know she was just as eager, though waiting for a more likely time for her. “Alian, I can see clearly that you’re wanting yours too, so is there any reason to wait? We are married now, and with Gabby, I feel my own reluctance is already gone, well as far as raising a Child goes.” Alian nodded, a twinkle in her eye. “I’ll admit, I’ll be a little sad if I don’t get Pregnant soon too, but yes, let’s try!” Alian and I sent our own Mana into Jeanette, and Jeanette willed herself to accept it, and fuse her own Mana with ours.
To our utter joy, and my personal shock, not knowing in advance there’d be an instant result, Jeanette’s belly glowed from within. An image of all three of us was shown on her belly merging together to a single point. “Wait, does that mean it worked?!” “YES!!” Both my girls shouted in Joy. Jeanette’s flow was suddenly expelled from her in a single mass, then instantly stopped. “Huh?” “I guess if you’re flow is stopped in this way, it gets all flushed out at once? Maybe? It’s a first for me, I don’t even remember hearing any tales about this happening.” Alian was stunned at the sight. Jeanette though, ran into the Bathing room to clean herself. I moved to strip the now bloodied sheet from the bed. Once Jeanette returned to the sheet free bed, we were all free to enjoy our night.
In the morning, we joyfully ran to the dining room for the Royal Family, where not only Alian’s parents, but the still nervous parents of Jeanette were also eating, with Darnel, Cassandra, and Adel just ready to start eating. All of them were stunned to see us so soon, but our expressions told them that something happened. “Is there some news?” “””YES!””” “Ahem! Remember the crazy idea to try merging all three of our Mana to make a baby? Well we tried it last night, and not only is Jeanette Pregnant, but it successfully merged all three of our images Father. This is ground breaking, and as a side effect, though a bit messy, it stopped her,…issue. She doesn’t have to suffer through it now. We shall try again on me later today I think, I’m close, so maybe it will work now, if not, maybe in two more days.” Stunned silence, followed by joyous shouting, over one another trying to get more details, even though everything was already said.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
“With this outstanding news, you three, and Gabby too, will be swarmed by the entire court asking for details. As much as I’d rather you stay here longer, I’ve already written up all the documents for the Farm Project. I think it’s better for you to leave immediately, with Jeanette’s parents. I’ll send word to Jane’s detail for their disguises, and all of you can leave together today. Prepare quickly, if you manage to succeed again before you leave, simply send a Maid with ‘it worked’ to let us know.” Looking at each other, we nodded. “A working Honeymoon sounds perfect your majesty! We’ll prepare for Gabby too, if you’ll send her along after she’s done eating?” “Naturally Dear, and congratulations on the Baby, or Babies to come. Off with you now!” We ran again, back to the Room, to find our own Breakfasts waiting. Only then, Jeanette ran to the Privy, and Morning Sickness was clearly the cause. She returned, and we ate quickly, then grabbed our packs, and stuffed all the clothes Gabby would need, since we were still packed, and ready for ourselves. We needed to setup a Pack for Alian once we were out shopping.
Once ready, Jeanette and I turned to Alian, and she bounced in excitement. We all channeled our Mana together, with Alian receiving this time. The glow was just as bright, and again all three of us were shown, and blended together. “It worked, it worked, already, I was so scared I’d have to wait. I’m so glad we’re pregnant together. If, if only, well you know, it would be perfect, but it’s fine like this too!” “Yeah, I get you, but I just can’t, sorry my Loves, I, want to be able to get past that block some day, but now,…I just can’t!” They hugged me tight, and Gabby came in, with a Maid. “Oh, good timing, inform the King and Queen, it worked.” She bowed, and left quickly. My Guard detail, dressed as adventurers, from confiscated equipment along with Jeanette’s Parents. “Oh, just a Moment, I need to use Light Magic real quickly. Then we can leave.” The guards all gasped as the alteration to Alian and Myself took hold. “This is only light magic, nothing’s actually changed. Just a way to let us get out without notice.” “Excellent Jane, I approve. It’s truly surprising, but very welcome.”
We moved quickly out of the Noble district. Once out in the Market, we stopped to buy packs for Alian, and Gabby, and kitted up Alian with more realistic travel clothes, having her change in the shop, and stuffing her finery into her pack. We bought a larger tent, so the three of us could share, while Gabby got Jeanette’s old tent. It was less than two hours before we were out of the City, and traveling towards Jeanette’s family home. “That was quicker, and less troublesome than any escort through the city I’ve ever participated in. Not looking like a Noble and her Guards really helps huh?” “Yes Captain, and not acting like Guards of Nobility also helps. Now if only you could act the part, it would be flawless.” “I shall endeavor to alter my attitude in future.”
The Guards were now chatting freely, much to Alian’s delight. I looked nervously over my shoulder to see if we were far enough out of sight for anyone else on the Road, I could feel my Mana draining. “Magic seems easier to me than it should be, but this spell is draining me quick, and it’s been running for hours now. Think we’re far enough to risk dropping it?” “Aye miss, even if they can see this far, nobody is going to look at anyone leaving, unless they’re bandits anyway. Those we just kill right quick, begging your pardon.” “Nothing to forgive, I don’t make a habit of protecting Bandits, the only reason I did with Adel’s guards, was because of how suspicious it seemed, and I was right. Even if there’s any more out there, the head of the snake is already cut off. So I have no problem killing any we find now. I’m going to let the spell drop now, I want Magic on hand for an emergency.” So saying the light spell faded, and mine and Alian’s features returned to their normal appearance. “If you don’t mind me saying lass, that’s an impressive spell. How much could it do you think?” I chuckled “Not sure, maybe I’ll play with it later, maybe I could change myself to look like a Man, would anyone like to see that?” Alian and Jeanette looked at me grinning. “What about your species?” “Maybe.” I winked. “Oh, how about clothes?!” “That’s a thought too!”
We went on with casual banter for quite a while. Then something caught my attention, and I froze. “What was that?” Everyone was instantly on alert, looking everywhere, and listening. “Is it possible to sense someone else’s magic at a distance? Cause whatever caught my attention just now, wasn’t sight, or sound. I don’t know what it was, so aside from smell, which should be obvious, the only thing left is Magic.” “I’ve heard tell missy that some with higher power can do that, and you seem a might more powerful than most.” The wind changed directions, and I barely heard the last lines of a magic incantation sounding like a Fireball spell. I instantly put up an ice barrier. The fireball slammed into my barrier, melting a small dent. Now I was MAD!!! My Claws extended, as my arms dropped to let my Pack fall. I charged, leaping over the ice wall I had made in an instant. “Keep them safe, I’ll deal with the Mage! There might be more attackers.” The Mage was chanting desperately to attack again. I noticed a few arrows flying at me. Swerving side to side as the arrows came down, I avoided them without slowing. My hands had taken up my Knuckles, and before the Mage could finish his second chant, the spike of my left Knuckle slammed into, and through the side of his skull.
“You Bitch!!!” An archer turned his bow at me, attempting to shoot me, and I leapt up, as he fired, and his arrow meant for me slammed into his companion who had attempted to do the same from the other side. “Die scum!” My claws ripped down his face, and across his throat. An anguished scream came from behind me. I turned to face a Woman crumpled to her knees, with a Bandit cloak falling off her head. “Traitors it seems, surely you knew what was going to happen. You only have yourselves to blame for all your deaths.” “Traitors? What? Huh?!” Her eyes bulged seeing my now clearly visible Tiger Stripes. “This road isn’t traveled by anyone important, there’s no reason for Bandits to be here. The only explanation is that most, if not all of you are involved in the failed rebellion headed by Jenson, who is now Dead.” “Please, my Husband said we were helping the Kingdom! I I I Didn’t know I swear!” “Helping the Kingdom dressed as Bandits, setting up an ambush by a Road, that very few people knew WE would be traveling on. No Way is that going to fly. You were stupid enough to accept an obvious lie from a Traitor Husband. He killed you, you understand that?”
Her now tear filled eyes, had a look of Rage aimed at her Dead Husband. “Then, could I ask one thing? I have a young son in Ginal farming community, which you are heading to now, will you see to him?” My expression only slightly softened. “You can live until we return to the Palace. So you can officially hand him over to us at that time. My adopted daughter will be happy to have a Brother. Also, both of my Wives are expecting, so that’s at least two more siblings coming in around nine months. You Son will be loved, and I promise he won’t be a pampered spoiled brat. You have my word, but you will be executed after that. If your son is old enough, you’ll have to explain it to him.” She nodded, her Raccoon features were very pretty. A Fox and a Coon playing together is going to be very amusing to me. I bound her wrists behind her back after disarming her.
When I returned to the group, past my Ice Wall, which was slowly melting, I found several dead Rebels. None of them were long ranged combatants, and none of my people were harmed, not so much as a Scratch. “Why are you keeping that one alive?” I smiled. “A last request. She has a young son, her Husband convinced her she was helping the Kingdom, and so I agreed to take her Son as my own. To that end, she will remain with us, under guard, until after our return to the Capitol, where she will officially hand her Son into my care. Once that is done, she will after interrogation to ensure anyone she knows to be involved has also been dealt with, she will be executed. Captain, may I entrust her supervision to you. Keep her fed enough to survive until her execution. We won’t spoil her, but we won’t torture her either.” “Oh, a Raccoon Clan Son, he’ll look so good with Gabby as a Big Sister!” Gabby stood straight, like she was trying to put her chest forward. It was cute “I’ll be the best big sister ever, I promise!” I hugged my girl tight in appreciation, and because I was grinning so big at the utter cuteness. Alian and Jeanette were trying desperately to school their own faces before Gabby could see them not laughing. “I know you will sweaty, you’re my precious first daughter after all!”
Our journey continued, and despite the occasional monster attack, it was rather uneventful. “Isn’t this odd? Shouldn’t there have been more Monsters by now?” Captain Freddrick thought about it for a Moment, then responded. “I think you’re correct Jane, that is most likely due to your presence. You were Gold Tier before, you may very well have tipped over into the next tier of mythril, or if not, you’re very near it I believe. Your power is constantly being sent out as I understand things, and the Monsters are somewhat sensitive to that. Smarter types will flea, while less intelligent types will challenge you.” I nodded, the explanation sounded reasonable. Just then one of my female guards, came up. “The Prisoner needs a moment Jane.” “Thank you Vivian, we’ll halt while the Prisoner’s needs are dealt with.” I had taken the time to learn my guard’s names. I had four guards beside Captain Freddrick. Two women, and two men, which was fortunate, since if we had only men in our detail, then I’d be tending to our prisoner myself, which would have irritated the guards.
Marla, the other female Guard, was helping to keep the prisoner secure while her needs were tended to. Bobby, and Dillan kept close to the girls being very alert. Any reason to stop was a bad sign to them. “Missy, it shouldn’t be much further I don’t think, might just be able to see the palisade within the hour. At least according to the Map I know.” Bobby was clearly from a rural area, while Dillan obviously grew up around a sea port. Both their manners were very crude, but their skills had gotten them where they are. “You know Lassy, we’d already be there on a boat I imagine.” Dillan clearly didn’t like so much walking. “Perhaps Dillan, but then we’ve already got two women with Morning Sickness, I doubt we want to have them sea sick on top of that. Rather not risk it, and besides, the only ship we could have taken, would have been the Royal Yacht, and that would have defeated the purpose of our secret departure.” “Now why you got to go making sense Lassy?” Everyone chuckled, including Dillan.
I looked critically at the surroundings of the community. It’s a very wide open space out of the forested lands. The Palisade however was very small in comparison to the open space. This wouldn’t do. There was only one road into the community, so I saw no reason not to start playing. I erected a sliding gate directly over the road, which I manifested stone to coat the road surface after the gate. I envisioned a huge surrounding around the entire meadowlands with multiple stairs on the inside to allow for archers to defend any approach. I added a few smaller versions of the sliding gate, so they were all forced tighter closed if rammed from the outside.
Kent and Tammy along with the Prisoner are simply stunned at the huge construct I had erected seemingly with no effort. I made sure to leave access for the stream, with grating to keep animals out. My guard detail was slightly less surprised having heard some rumors about my abilities, but Jeanette, and Alian were able to take it in stride. Gabby though was super excited, and super proud of her Mom, as if she was born to me in truth. It was adorable.
The townsfolk came out of the Palisade in a steady stream looking in amazement at the enormous structure. They were frightened at our approach, until they noticed Alian and I with our Tiger Stripes on full display. The Village Elders, a group of three people who honestly I couldn’t imagine surviving to their current ages in this world approached slowly with timid respect. “Miladies, it’s an honor to have such distinguished visitors. I hope we haven’t done anything to offend the Royal Family, as this wall seems to entrap us.” I smiled warmly. “Although I am a little hurt you’d think I’d trap you for some imagines slight, I do understand your concern. Honored Elders, this wall doesn’t trap, it protects. I don’t know how good your eyes still are, but there are stairs to allow you to reach the top for defense. If you look here, you can see a bar on the right side of the gate. Observe as I twist that bar slightly, and then push. Once you’ve pushed the right side of the gate outward, you can then wheel the whole gate to the right, it runs along tracks. The concept of this gate design, is that anything on the outside only pushes it tighter closed. There’s smaller gates on all sides of the wall. This is a gift, not a punishment. In honor of my marriage to one of your own, along with the Princess Alian. We are also here on Business, I am going to be building structures that are designed to grow plants INSIDE, meaning you’ll be growing food in winter.” Everyone from the town gasped in amazement at the thought of growing crops in winter. “I don’t know if the wooden palisade is worth keeping or not, but if you decide to dismantle it, you can either make new buildings, or keep it as firewood. I’ll be building grain silos, which allow you to store grain safe from rodents, and moisture. Also if new barns are needed, I can manifest them with earth magic. Please discus with yourselves where the best locations for new crop fields should be, mark them out with stakes, and string if you can, then I can build the structures over the top.” Jeanette came forward next. “Hello everyone, it’s good to see you all, I’m happy to return home for a visit. Don’t stand on ceremony, we’re currently hiding from Court intrigue, as two of us are Pregnant,…each child,…is a triblend. This has never been done before, and it was Jane’s idea, so every noble woman is going to be over excited for some time. We need to let things settle down for a time. Plus this is a perfect location for Jane’s greenhouses, as my Parents are here, and can vouch for all of you, just as much as I can. We need this to be kept secret, as desperate people would attempt to break into the Greenhouses in order to steal food. Thus keeping it here, away from prying eyes till crops are ready for harvest this winter.”
A woman, and two children with Wolf features came running out, the Woman throws herself at Kent, while the two little wolf children slammed into Jeanette. “Hello you two, I’ve missed you, have you been good?!” “”Big Sis welcome home, yes we’ve been good!!”” I looked at the two a little jealous that I hadn’t gotten a welcome like that. “Do you have a greeting for your new Sister in laws?” Alian had come to stand next to Jeanette’s other side. “”Both of them? You married two Nobles? Daddy said only one was a Noble.”” Their speaking in unison was epically awesome, though a bit weird, since they aren’t twins. “I wasn’t a Noble before I married Alian. Seriously, I come from FAR AWAY, and there, Tiger People aren’t Nobles. Imagine my surprise when Jeanette tells me that all Tiger People are Nobles here. The way I came here wasn’t by my ability, nor did I commission the transport, I have no understanding of how it happened. I never saw the person who brought me here. Also, when I arrived, I was completely naked, and fell flat on my face in front of Jeanette.” Their eyes pop open wide at that, and the girl clasps her hands over her mouth as she gasps.
Darla speaks out in shock. “Naked, you must have been so embarrassed!” I chuckled. “Well I have a unique situation, so I wasn’t Embarrassed at all, but Jeanette.” She slapped my shoulders. “You don’t have to tell them about that!” “Awe why not?” “Because it’s embarrassing!” “But you’re adorable when you’re embarrassed!” Her face was bright red at this point, being so embarrassed as she was. Darla giggled, and Mitchell just face palmed. “You really do love each other. I’m so glad. Though I guess that means it’ll be even more awkward at home.” I grimaced at that. “Not from us, we can hold off, and besides, I already talked to your Dad, and Tammy, and depending on your Mom’s opinion, I might just be taking you two to the Capitol when I leave, so I can teach you things that will help on the Farm. So maybe a working vacation in your future. We have to wait for your Mom’s decision though.”
Their eyes widened again. “You mean it?!” I nodded. “Don’t get your hopes up yet, but that’s my intention. If not, I’ll at least build a new house with bigger rooms that are sound proofed, so you SHOULD’T hear things as much. Probably do that anyway.” Now their eyes were sparkling with eager anticipation. “I heard that, my instant feeling is to refuse, but you are family now, and you’re talking about teaching them things. What things would those be?” I smiled at their Mother Mira. “First two things I intend to teach, are Writing, and Math. I won’t be too strict on the Writing, but they’ll be able to do record keeping, and read letters from me, or write a letter if you need something. Math can help them in various ways, and my numbers are much easier to learn instead of writing the words. Other than that, there’s food crops that nobody in the Castle even knew about, one of which is Sugar Beets.” Mira’s eyes, along with Kent and Tammy were full of surprise. “I know what sugar beets are, but you can’t eat them.” I chuckled. “True, but the reason they’re called Sugar Beets, is because you can extract sugar from them, and refine it into fine crystals. I know that method too, so I can teach them, as soon as I get hold of some Beets to demonstrate. I can make a decent batch with about ten beets.”
“I can get you those easily, with the new wall, I know a patch inside that is easy to reach, if they’re really a good crop, we’ll have plenty within a few months.” I beamed at her. “Perfect!” We all moved towards the palisade as the majority of the townsfolk had returned to their business realizing that we had switched to family mode, but the Elders had already pointed out a location for a test field. “Milady, this would be a perfect location, we’ve placed a stake at each corner, but we don’t have any string yet.” I moved over, and seeing the stakes easily, I begin to cast. The framework of the greenhouse rises out of the ground and before anyone knew what was happening, the glass had formed, and the main sliding door formed a second later. “There’s the first one. If you till the field, and put some sort of fertilizer into the soil, then you can start planting soon.” “What is this material?!” “It’s called Glass. I use magic to create it, but there’s a non magical method as well. It requires a fine white sand, and you heat it until it melts, then after forming the molten glass into the shape you want, you have to slowly let it cool. If it cools too quick it will shatter.” Wonder and amazement is plain on the elders face. “In this structure, the way I designed it, it will allow the sun’s light into the structure, but it will also keep snow out, but water flows into drains and into holding tanks so you can use the water collected. It also protects against cold winds. Thus winter temperatures won’t freeze the soil, or prevent plant growth.”
Understanding and joy covers their faces. “I see now what you mean about growing crops in winter. We’ll mark more fields, and I’ll arrange for this one to be plowed.” “What might you intend to use this field for? Should I make a Silo, also maybe a Farm House, so a Family can move out here.” “Hmm, yes, I think a Grain Field is wise, and the thought of spreading the Families out with this new larger wall is also nice.” I looked at the sky, to plot the Sun’s travel, and site the best place for a new house, and silo. They rise perfectly as I intended. Glass windows adorn the house, and a clear Chimney rises out of the roof. The Silo is designed to allow sacks to be easily filled from the bottom, while it’s easy to climb stairs to dump the grain into the top. I also constructed a conveyer belt with a crank system to run the belt, once it’s actually attached. I fell to my knees in exhaustion. “You’ll need to fashion a belt of fabric that can hold the grain. When you crank the spindles on top, and bottom, it will carry the grain into the silo. I’m too tired for any more.”
Jeanette lifted me up under my arms, and lead me away to her home. “You should take this house Kent, it’s much larger than any in town, but I expect they’ll all look the same. Moving your things here would put you in a prime spot to supervise the,…Green houses. Only makes sense for you to have the first new house.” I looked back at the house I had just built. “Too bad there’s no furniture inside yet, or I’d just go there. Ah well, we can move things tomorrow before I do anymore Greenhouses.” We stumbled off as a group. “Thank you Elder, I think I’ll accept. We don’t exactly have a proper place for our new Family to visit, but there’s no help for it tonight.”
Mira opened the door to their house about twenty minutes later, having taken longer due to my stumbling around through the twists and turns of the Village. I’m guided to a bed in the one large room. This was definitely awkward for the Kids, and couldn’t blame Jeanette for leaving, and the other kids are just as eager, if too young to legally leave on their own. “See, this won’t due. This is no way to raise a family. It’s fine for a night or two, or when it’s just you and some babies, but with Teens, it’s just cruel. I’m going to make sure nobody has to live this way. It’s the least I can do for this community taking charge of the greenhouses.” I pass out immediately after speaking, with my last words slurring out before my eyes blank.
I woke up about two hours later, having apparently regained enough Mana to be functional again. “Sorry about that, guess I shouldn’t do so much in a day huh?” Alian smiled gently down at me, as she sat on the Bed fondling my head, and ears. “I didn’t mind, I got to watch you sleep, it’s something I haven’t enjoyed before. Usually we all pass out together for,…Reasons.” I laughed alerting the others to my waking up. “You’re awake!” Darla said stating the obvious, as just like Gabby she barreled into me with a fierce hug. “Can you teach me magic like that?!” I hugged her back, as I struggled up laughing gently. “Not sure, I just kind of do the things I imagine. I don’t know if there’s aptitude restrictions, or how a person’s Mana works, or anything really. I’m all new to this myself. Nobody taught me, I just do it. BUT, we haven’t actually introduced ourselves have we? I know you’re named Darla, from talking with Kent and Tammy at the Capitol during the Wedding. Your Brother is Mitchell right? Did anyone mention my name yet, or were you waiting for me to wake up again?” Darla beamed at me, already loving my instant acceptance of her sisterly affections. “You’re right, I am Darla, and my brother is Mitchell, but nobody has said your name yet. The Princess told us her name, and the Guards did too, oh, and the Racoon Woman who you have tied up, they got her Son, and brought her here. Why is she tied up anyway?” “Well first, my name, in full, is Jane Rae Richards, but please call me Jane, or Big Sis Jane if you want. As to the Woman tied up, she, and her husband, along with some others, had been fooled into thinking that attacking us would help the Kingdom, she was completely fooled, but everyone else were Rebels. She’s going to be treated as a traitor, but as a last request, I’m going to adopt her Son as my own. SO, that little boy is your new Cousin, I hope I can count on you.” “Oh he’s adorable, but what’s that about a last request, she’s still alive, she’s not sick.” “Sweety, when people commit acts of Treason, they either win, or they die. That Woman, who’s only crime was being tricked, is going to have her head cut off. Either that, or if the King is feeling very generous, and taking into account she was tricked, she can be placed as a Slave Laborer in a particularly bad work space like a Salt Mine or something. It’s terrible, but I can’t change things. Not even sure if she’d be better off alive as a Slave, or Dead. Maybe I’ll let her Decide if I should ask the King for the Slave thing.” Darla’s eyes widened. “She’s a Traitor? She attacked you? But you’re adopting her Child? You’re amazing, most Nobles would just kill the Child, or leave it to its fate without worrying about them. You can totally count on me, I’ll be the best Aunt ever!”
“Thanks sweety, I needed that. I hate having to do this you know. I’d rather let her live, maybe even put her to work in the Castle or something. Only problem is that Treason is too big a deal, and can’t be forgiven in any event. Nothing I can legally do, and she knows it. Alian, should we talk to her now, or later when we’re on our way?” She thought for a moment. “I think you should focus on your work here, and getting some family time for now. If you keep struggling to break away, and focus, then we’ll address her first, and continue once she’s decided.” I nodded. “What’s our new Son’s Name?” “She refused to tell us, because she says if we keep that Name, he’ll be included as a Traitor, while if we give him a Name, he’s ours, and nobody can say different. SO, we get to name him. He’s too young to talk still, but not nursing anymore. Such a little sweetheart though. He’s been clinging to Jeanette, apparently she babysat for the little one before. That makes things easier.” I got myself up from the Bed, and we moved to the main living area where everyone else congregated.
“Are you feeling better Jane? You really worried us back there, practically collapsed after raising that house.” I smiled. “Yeah, between the walls, and the other structures, that was a big ask for my Mana Pool, but the funny thing is, I feel it’s gotten bigger. Like the more I use, the more I can hold. I bet after a good meal, and a nights rest, I’ll be able to do even more at one go.” Mira had a Pensive look. “I’d be careful Jane, I know I don’t have any right to say, but you really worried me there. Don’t overdo it, with what I’ve seen already, we can’t afford to lose you, as Family, let alone what you can teach people. Jeanette is super happy, that’s clear for anyone to see, and you already care for my children as a sibling should, I can tell. You can’t fake that, even if you didn’t wreak of Familial protective instincts.” She smiled at that. “Yeah, about that, Jeanette, what do you think, should we tell them? Will they accept everything? I want my detail to know, they deserve it, but Alian you need to decide on that, being that you know Father’s opinion better than mine.” “It makes sense for the Detail to know everything, they’re totally loyal to you already, because you accept them as they are, more you don’t want them to change at all, and hate the idea of them faking manners for some Noble, or Merchant, choosing to have them be silent instead of using fake manners. They’d die for you, learning your truth won’t change that Love.”
“As to my Family, yes, they will accept you just as much as I do, they can smell the Truth as you speak, so there’s no fear. The only one left, is our Prisoner, but considering what’s likely to happen, that doesn’t matter all that much. Either she will lose her head, or keep your secret to protect her Son from needless attention.” I nodded. “Ok, everyone, Jane isn’t my birth name. My Birth name is John, and my middle name had a different spelling, so I altered that to the feminine version. I wasn’t born a Tiger Person, or a girl. I wasn’t even born in this world. The world I come from, is more advanced in technology, like Glass, and the Stainless Steel I introduced, weapons that I won’t introduce, vehicles, machines, so many things. However there was no Magic, and my original species was the only one there. Never were there ever Cat people, or wolf people, any other beast person. We have animals that are named, and look like your beast like appearances. However I suspect that’s due to a Translation Magic that’s embedded into my head. I can’t even write in my old language. The only reason I can write numbers still, is because you hadn’t invented a specific number series. My Family back home is all Dead, there’s nobody back there for me, nobody misses me, well as far as I know anyway. So even if I could go back, I wouldn’t, unless it was for a shopping trip anyway. Though I doubt that would happen in any event, because this Body wouldn’t be allowed in that world, and my old Body, which is much older than this one, is long since been cremated into ash. There’d be no way to even visit that world even for trade.”
“That’s,…I can’t really imagine how you’re coping so well. What does this have to do with how much you smell of your convictions?” “My species from before, didn’t have strong scents, and our sense of smell was very weak. We evolved from Apes, so even though we were omnivores, we had to cook our meat, or get really sick. I suspect that my instincts, and scent glands are on overdrive, because I’m basically a Baby in that regard. Despite how old I am inside, and how I look outside, this Body is basically a Month old now. I’ve only dealt with my Monthly one time in my life. Those cramps were horrible, but Jeanette and Alian had me pinch them to share the pain level, and they said I was lucky. I hope it dulls in my mind over time, but I’m super not looking forward to next time, magic pain relief, or not magic pain relief.” Jeanette giggled. “It was so funny, and cute watching her stumble around like a new born, dealing with her tail for the first time ever. It’s so helpful for balance when you have control, but clearly when it’s mindless, and adult size, it’s a detriment.”
“I have more trouble with the idea of other worlds, but it’s clear everything you said is true. I can see why you’re not spreading this around. If the wrong people find out about this, it will cause panic. I assume you’re working with the King to limit what you share, and what you keep secret.” “Exactly, there’s so many things that are just too dangerous in the wrong hands. It’s too big an issue for me to choose.” “Jane,…is that why you’re so comfortable with us more rough types? The lads and I have been wondering, you don’t see us as anything other than people, you don’t treat us as disgusting, even though you like Women, and clearly not Men. Most Women in your situation would still see us a Men, and be leery around us.” I chuckled. “I’ve been in more Men’s rooms, and Locker Rooms naked around More Men than any of you ever have. In High School PE, which is Physical Education, we were required to change from our normal school clothes, take a shower, and dress in special Gym clothes for a little over a half hour, then strip naked again, shower again, and put on our regular clothes. Twenty boys naked as the day they were born soaping up, and rinsing off together. I’m really one of the guys, if I catch you taking a Piss, I don’t care, it won’t phase me in the slightest. IF however, you start trying to get amorous, then you’ll likely lose something, just to ensure you don’t have that issue again.” Freddrick nods in understanding, but Bobby and Dillan look rather pensive. Vivian and Marla though laughed joyously. “Hear that you two, better mind yourself. Mistress Jane won’t tolerate your nonsense!” “Yeah, I guess you’re lucky she isn’t really your type, cause I’ve seen you make moves on principals in the past. If that had happened with our Jane, you’d be a girl yourselves! Ha ha ha!!”
We at dinner together, and I played with my new Raccoon son. He’s truly adorable, and clingy. As expected Dinner was very bland, though cooked well. However I found myself longing for a nice juicy Beef Steak. The next thing I realize, there is a commotion outside, and a loud mooing that was unmistakable. I handed the little bundle of toddler cuteness overload to his mother, who he clung to, as I ran outside. “Oops!” A whole herd of cattle was outside, including a ten massive bulls that were now attempting to battle it out. I somehow knew one was infertile, and I didn’t want him harming the fertile ones. An ice lance pierced his brain a second later. Then I chased all of them outside the palisade, and having seen all the greenhouse outlines already placed, I noticed a massive grassland area that wouldn’t suit for cultivating crops. I herded the cattle there, and erected fences, and kept all the bulls in separate enclosures with an equal share of the cows. There must have been five hundred head, but now only nine Bulls for all of them.
“Milady Jane, what are these beasts?!” Asked the Elder grandmother from before. “They’re called Beef, a great food source, and leather source. Herbivores, dumb as anything. Back home we raise them for food, just like this. They’ll need a second set of grassy fields to move them to after they’ve eaten this one down. Move them two to four times per year I guess. I’m not a Rancher, I just wanted a Beef Steak, and boom, we have a huge herd to deal with. Not sure if you want to bother raising them or not, but I didn’t want a crap ton of meat going to waste by killing them all at once. My Magic has a tendency of doing things on its own it seems, whenever I’m nostalgic. If they could come after me here, I’d be in trouble for cattle rustling.” I giggled almost uncontrollably for a moment. “Still, I killed the one bull that was sterile, so these can all breed, and I have a big animal to carve up and share out. Do you have a tanner in town?” The Elder smiled. “As it happens, my Son and I are the Tanners. Is there anything else these animals can provide? Meat is excellent in its own right, but I suspect there may be more.” I nodded. “I don’t know how to make them myself, because I had better options, but the Bladder can be used to make a water skin, with a leather covering. Most of the internal organs can be eaten if properly prepared, but aside from Kidneys, Heart, Liver, and for the brave the Testicles, I don’t know the slightest about preparing them safely. The wind pipe can be used in making Bellows for a Smithy, or Home fireplace. Also Beef Cows produce an excessive amount of Milk, way more than their calf will ever need, and as long as you keep milking them, they won’t stop producing, even after the Calf is weaned. This Milk can be churned to produce butter, and cream, as well as the Buttermilk most commonly used in soups, and you can make cheese, though I don’t know the details myself, so that will be a long hard grind to master even one form of Cheese making. Basically you need to force the milk to curdle up, then pack the curds into a mold of some kind, and let it age in a controlled environment. After a few months, to a year, you cut the rind off the outside, and the inner part is a solid block of edible cheese. Typically you coat that with Bee’s Wax, or something else that’s technically edible wax, to keep it safe from the air till you want it.”
The Elder was suffering from an information overload. “Oh yeah, and their droppings are great fertilizer after they’re dried out, and crushed. You can burn it if you get really desperate. The hooves can be boiled to make glue, along with the fat from the skin. Stinky process though.” “Ah well Glue we know about, I’ll have my Son help with skinning the one you Killed in Town, he should learn any particulars about this beast. We don’t want to waste anything that can be used after all.” I smiled, it’s just outside Jeanette’s folks place.”
I basically had her Son do the work, and answered the questions I could, my knowledge being spotty at best, but enough to help a seasoned tanner who basically knew it anyway. After the Skin was off, I realized they had no way of dismantling the corpse, and I willed the Earth to provide a stainless steel saw, and to my utter delight, it worked, though I felt dizzy afterwards, and had to hand it to the Elder’s Son. Jeanette and her siblings came to help as well, and before long with the last light still on the horizon, we had given every house a portion of meat and a few brave ones, who know about organ meats, took all the innards. Only the skull was left, and I hung it up on the outside of the Palisade to be picked clean, and dry. “Why keep the Skull?” “They look amazing dried, and might inspire a Helmet design, or something, maybe even an embossment of a Shield. Sort of a Death Knight armor.”
Shaking her head, Alian smirked. “If you say so sweaty. Just don’t be surprised if nobody else cares for your inspiration.” I laughed. “You’re only saying that because you’re a princess, Jeanette can’t you see that? What would you think of fighting someone with a Bull Skull embossed onto their shield?” “Hmmm, I have to admit, it would cause unease, and instantly put me on edge.” “Huh!? You seriously think so?” “Yes Alian I do think so. Like Jane said, you’re a Princess, you haven’t been out there fighting Monsters and the Like. Jane’s aura has protected you on this trip even. If one of those Bandits Traitors had a Shield like that, you’d probably have curled up in fear, or else black out, and go on instinct to fight.” “Hmph, I don’t know about that, but whatever!”
Finally able to relax, we all went to bed till the morning. Upon waking, I could smell Steak sizzling over an open flame. It drew me out like a Moth to a Flame. “Steak, STEAK!” Drool practically ready to trail out of my mouth, I moved like a Zombie, failing to put anything on myself prior to moving. I didn’t exactly strip naked, but I was only wearing my underpants. No top at all. Honestly I couldn’t care less, but Mitchell, and Kent were instantly drawn to the sight. Freddrick, Bobby, and Dillan were thankfully still sleeping. “Jane Sweaty, I think you forgot something.” “Huh?!” I looked down. “Oh, Sigh, I guess I should put on a top, but that Steak smells so good, I don’t even want to bother.” Never the less, I let Mira guide me back inside to get a top. I needed her too, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to force myself to leave that heavenly smell. It was Divine in flavor. Everyone approved, though they were all timid on their first bites.
Once breakfast was finished, and I was finally able to force myself to leave the table, and put on clothes, I went outside the Palisade. The construction was quick. Fifty greenhouses, their houses, and storage buildings rose before I felt the drain on my Mana, “Damn, there’s only two more fields left, why couldn’t my Mana hold out longer this once?” Never the less, I had to take a break. Upon which I realized that Jeanette’s Family, with the help of my Detail, had finished moving into the first house I constructed. The Elders had taken it upon themselves to assign families to the new homes, leaving two of their three families unassigned, but with the two remaining fields to construct, it was obvious that everyone would have a new home once I finished my break. Two hours, and another Steak later, and I was ready to finish the new construction. Which I promptly did. “Elders, should we dismantle all the old buildings once they’re empty. Then plan out a new town using my Stone Magic, so everyone can have a decent home when they move here later? Craftsman and the like. I assume more people will be moving here in time.”
“Perhaps that’s wise, you said dismantle, that means taking them apart, so we can use everything again yes?” I nodded. “Absolutely, the three, um, ah well it doesn’t work in this language. There’s three words you should always keep in mind with old items that won’t do their original jobs anymore. Recycle, meaning to use again, Reduce, meaning to use less then you might otherwise use, and lastly Reuse, meaning to use something for a use other than it was originally designed for. Such as a cracked Barrel being turned into a Hay Manger, or a Water Filter.” I had installed a large water tower, with a wind powered pump, a filter system, indoor plumbing for every home, flushing toilets, and a sewer system leading far out of the town. This would be the most advanced community in the Nation. I had made roads too, so once I was finished with the Town, there would be very little trouble for the residents. “I see, that makes sense. Why waste materials, once the original structure isn’t needed? Once we’re finished moving everyone to the new houses, I’ll have the old structures dismantled as you suggest. Even if we don’t need the materials ourselves, I’m sure we could regain some money from selling them off.” I smiled, taking my leave as I went back to work. The last two fields, houses, and their outbuildings were finished in less than an hour.
“I think I’m going to collapse for like ten hours as soon as I eat something.” Alian chuckled gently, with a warm smile. “Come love, let’s get you fed, and into bed. At least tonight, we all have our rooms. So we won’t be surrounded by everyone else tonight, just the three of us.” Once we reached the new house, the Kitchen was clearly a big hit. The dining area had a huge clearly new table built, still needed to be sanded and stained, but a major improvement over the previous plate holding they were used to. “Oh Jane, I was curious what those rod things on the windows were for.” I smiled, and responded. “Curtains, so you can block out the light, with something pretty.” I sat exhausted at the table, as food was served. More Steak, YUM! “Right now, I don’t think I can get tired of Steak!”
That night we cuddled, and snuggled till I fell asleep. In the Morning, most of the work was finished “I just need to make the second Cattle Surround, and depending on the progress in disassembling the old structures, I can start designing the new townscape.” “Are you sure you should work so much today? You’ve exhausted yourself two days running.” Alian clearly worried asked me. “Alian, every time I’ve lasted longer. I have more Mana available then ever. Pretty sure I can finish everything today, probably get exhausted again, but have enough Mana on the way back to the Capitol to pave the road with ease, ahead of us, so we can travel quicker. The new walls are all the protection the town needs for the Greenhouses, and faster shipping means lower costs.” Jeanette nodded. “I think that will help a lot in Winter Weather. Even if the snow is low, the mud always stopped any shipments.” “Huh? I know the Carriages don’t have shocks, but are you telling me you don’t have Sledges?!” “Um,…What’s a Sledge?”
“A Sledge, is like a Carriage, or Wagon, but without wheels, instead it has runners to travel through snow, or over ice while pulled by the Horses.” Total Confusion on everyone’s face. “I’ll build a set of Sledge Runners later along with everything else. Then maybe we can use some of the wood from the old houses to build the body. Clearly someone has good carpentry skills.” Kent looked a little sheepish, but also proud. “I take it you’re the carpenter for this soon to be fine table Kent?” He nodded. With breakfast out of the way, I went outside to find that indeed the townsfolk had been busy, attacking one building with ladders for the roof, another team removing walls, and a third team dealing with floors, and framing. Most of the town was only lumber at this point. By the time I had finished the second Cattle enclosure, all the buildings were dismantled. None of them had been particularly large. Work was under way on dismantling the Palisade now. So I tended to designing an intelligent layout for the central community, and greenhouses over the central farms. After completing the work on the town, with all the plumbing connections, and other fixtures, I noticed the Palisade was nearly gone as well. I still felt I had plenty of Mana so I built a couple grain mills reliant on wind, and a saw mill of the same design, setup for making dimensional lumber. It was surprisingly easy at this point. My Mana must grow faster than most peoples. So I created two sets of Sledge Runners, to which I showed Kent. “Here’s the sledge runners, now you just need the standard Wagon bed, and diver’s bench, then the lead poles to attach the harnesses to.” Kent’s eyes sparkled. “I can do that it won’t even take three days each, and there’s plenty of time before winter. This will help a lot for transport during winter.”
I left him to it, feeling like I hadn’t touched my Mana today. “Jane, I’m sorry, but what are those new buildings with the big spinning things on them? I know they must be important, but I can’t understand what for.” “Elder, two of those are Grain mills to turn wheat into flour, or Corn into meal in large batches. The third one is a Saw Mill for cutting lumber into desired sizes for construction purposes. I only wish I knew how to design a Plywood Mill, because that would use much more of the wood than we currently are able to.” “Could you show me the buildings, and tell me how they function? Also what’s this Plywood you speak of?” “Certainly, I assume you have a Quern at home for making flour, or perhaps just a pestle and Morter.” She Nodded. “Well a Flour Mill is a large version of that, only it’s powered by the wind. As the wind hits those sails, they will spin, and that rotates the grinding stone on top of the base. One is setup to be coarse ground, while the other is fine ground.”
After demonstrating the mechanisms inside the two buildings with grain mills in them, I then took her to the saw mill, and cautioning her about the extreme dangers for the unwary, I explained how those mechanisms worked as well. “These building should always have an adult on hand. Kids might think it’s a cool place to play, but that’s a good method of crippling themselves, or outright killing themselves. Nobody should work them at night, but someone should still be alert for a late night visit by children who think they know better than the adults.” “I couldn’t agree more Mistress Jane, Presumably you assumed I knew as much, but had some need to state the obvious?” I chuckled. “It’s called Liability. Back home, anyone who provides an item that can be dangerous if misused, or mistreated, they must explain all known issues, or they’re liable for legal punishment when the obvious happens. JUST in case anything that I presume is obvious was unexpected to you, I’ve pretty much gone over everything, so at this point nobody can blame me for any mistakes they make on their own.” She Chuckled. “Your homeland must have been strange indeed compared to our Nation.” I laughed. “They’d find this Nation strange, but I think most would agree, it’s a good strange, more simple, and honest. Nobody has to protect themselves legally as much here, they rely on the people they do business with to be at least somewhat intelligent, and able to not kill themselves in a ridiculous manner.”
Looking around at the revamped town, the Elder beamed with pride at what she saw. “This town will be the envy of the Nation for some time, even the Capitol’s citizens don’t have this much luxury in their homes, and you’ve given us this. The running water is a miracle in itself, and those Sledge Runners are inspired. Our smith has been inspecting them since Kent came for advice. He’s positive he could have made them in his old forge, let alone in the massive metal work’s building you constructed with the Blast Furnace, and the Sheet Extruder that you designed.” I grimaced. “I don’t know how good that Sheet Extruder is, I tried to copy what I remembered, but if it needs any improvement, I’m sure I could get one of the Royal Smiths to help me fix it properly. This is a Royal project with the Greenhouses after all. Having the tools is the least we can do.” “I’ll let the Smith know, and he’ll get back to me if there’s any problems. Though I don’t know if he can spot if there are. It’s a completely new tool after all.” “He should know something is off, even if not how to fix it exactly. The sheets are supposed to be perfectly flat, and uniform thickness for one. Any Smith should be able to spot imperfections of that sort.” “Maybe so, we’ll have to see.”
I returned for Lunch. “I told you I’d finish everything today. It’s only lunch time, and I feel like I didn’t even scratch my Mana today.” Alian looked relieved. “I’m glad your finished, and truly this town is beautiful now. Though admittedly a bit monochromatic. So now we can spend the rest of today relaxing, maybe take a bath in the tub you made upstairs?” I chuckled at that. “I’ll try to put hot water into the Bath with magic I think I can pull that off, though it might take a try or two to get the temperature right.”
We did spend the rest of the day relaxing, and took our bath together, with Gabby, and our new Son. The tub was rather large, intended to allow for communal bathing of the same gender, or of the married trio if they desired. They had decided to wait for us, and the Guard Detail took turns by gender, with the female guards taking our Prisoner, more to keep an eye on her, than because they wanted to bath her, but they might as well reduce the smell a bit. They changed her into one of her spares from her old house, so she was at least somewhat clean, though they didn’t bother to straighten her hair.
Shortly after breakfast the next day, a runner from the capitol stopped dead in his tracks just inside the gate, stunned at the changes to the community. Bobby noticed the man shortly after he’d stepped out for a stroll. “Come on Man, you’re her on Business right, snap out of it, and tell me what you’re after.” Visibly startled into his brain working again, he turned his shocked head to see Bobby so close. “You were so focused on explaining to yourself what you’re seeing, that you didn’t even notice me approach. I wasn’t even trying to be quiet.” “Ah, yes, I have a message for the First Princess, and her Wives. Can you direct me?” “Better , I’m one of Milady Jane’s guards, I’ll guide you myself.” Relief flooded the man’s face. “I had thought perhaps I was mistaken on where I was, it’s changed so much. Is this all her doing?” Bobby Nodded. “Not a word of what you see, as to those shiny structures, for the time being, they don’t exist aye? King’s Orders and all.”
“Your Highness, the First Princess Alian, I have a Message from the King.” So saying, the runner handed the Scroll to Bobby in front of Alian, who upon inspecting the seal, and ensuring nothing was amiss, handed it in turn to Alian. “Thank you for bringing this, a Moment please, in case I need to send a Reply.” She cracked the seal, and read the letter. “I’ll send my reply verbally, I have accepted the message, and understand, I will respond appropriately.” “Yes your Highness.” He bowed, and turned on his heel to return to the Capitol directly. Jeanette had handed him something to eat that he could carry.
Once the runner was outside, Alian sighed in disappointment. “We’ll have to head home tomorrow I’m afraid. Something’s come up with the Rebellion nonsense on their end, and we have to attend some executions.” “If that’s the case, we should go today instead, as much as I don’t want to, but having a prisoner involved in the same situation, it’s better to deal with her early, so her punishment can be included.” Alian nodded. “You’re right, I’m sorry Jeanette, I truly wanted to visit properly now the work is done.” Jeanette and I hugged her tight. “It’s not your fault, and I’m sorry too, but we should get going now. Mitchell, Darla, Gabby, get ready quickly please. Have the prisoner prepared, and Mira can you get the Baby please?” Instant quick action had everyone prepared to leave in under half an hour. Alian carried the baby as we left the house to a tearful goodbye of the rest of the family.
Starting from the Gate, I began paving the road ahead of us, and we move faster. What originally took two days to travel, took only one day back, we actually saw the runner as he was entering the City Gates just ahead of us. He ran fast despite the awkward footing. The Gate Guards were stone faced in shock as they watched the road being paved right up to the gate. They stepped several feet to the side to allow the magic to finish. Once it was done, they looked at my perky tiger ears, and snapped to attention. “Back onto the path for a Moment, while I pave the places you’re standing. No sense stepping into the mud when I can pave those spots, also should I make a larger paved area for thorough searches where you have to unload wagons?” The guards stepped onto the path, and the one on the left responded to my question. “That would be most helpful, if you could make that patch about ten feet by twenty feet on this side of the road, that would be perfect for such rare occasions. Thank you very much Milady Jane yes? I know all other Tigers at least on sight, and you’re the only new name, so it seems obvious, and especially with the First Princess behind you. May I ask why there isn’t a carriage, and only one group of adventurers with you?” I smiled as I spread the pavement. “They aren’t adventurers, but my personal detail in disguise. We left under an illusion so our ears and tail looked like a Cat Clan when we left. Honeymoon and all. Didn’t want to draw undue attention. This paved road leads to my Concubine’s farming community home, so we didn’t want to have a muddy mess later if we visited again. Since we cut our trip short for official business.”
We then moved to the Palace directly. Sending a Maid ahead of us to warn the King we had an issue to drop onto him. Having moved to our Room to change into proper attire, while our Guards watched the Prisoner, leaving Gabby to rest in her room, everyone else proceeded to the audience chamber for private matters. “Welcome home daughters. I see a Raccoon woman bound, and a toddler in your arms. So is the bound woman the problem you need to drop on me?” I nodded. “Yes, she’s part of the Traitor issue, but she had been duped by her idiot husband who is already dead. She’s only still alive to formally hand custody of this little angel to me. Congratulations, you’ve got your first grandson! Also, since she was fooled, and thought she was serving the Kingdom, instead of betraying it, you could enslave her to the Mines, but I don’t know if that would be a blessing or not. I also don’t know if she wants that or not.” The King looked at the Woman, who’s name I never bothered to learn. “Is that a fate you’d want? I’m thinking it would be worse than death myself.” She shook her head. “No your Majesty, I’ll join my husband in death. I just want my Boy to survive, as he’s innocent, I even refused to give his name, so they’d have to give him a new one, like his mother died before he got one. Can this settle the formal adoption?” “I have heard your words, and acknowledge the adoption. It will be paperless from your side, but I shall sign it myself as approving official. Keeping it secret where the Raccoon child came from. You’ll join the rest for the execution day after tomorrow.”
She nodded in understanding and acceptance. With a snap of his fingers, a couple guards entered. “Place her with the other traitors. Add her name to the list same as everyone else, as if she was taken at the same time.” They bowed, and took her away. “I was going to ask her about the Slave thing ahead of time, and not bring it up if she refused, but this makes it official in any event, and it worked out the easy way in the end. If she hadn’t told me about her Son, my Son now, I’d have killed her then, and just told you about it.” He smiled. “A proper response, do tell me how it happened.” I did so, with little embellishment since I wasn’t exactly proud of it, but it was needed. “Very good, and what about the work in the community?” “All done, with extra. Everyone has a new house, the old town was dismantled, and new city center built. A water tower, plumbing system, and sewer system were built with a sewage treatment plant outside the town center. Also they have two grain mills, and one saw mill now. Lastly, I had an accident, though it’s a good one.” His eyebrow rose. “Do tell.” Remember how the Cats just showed up? Well it’s like that, only it was about food. I accidentally summoned five hundred head of Beef. Don’t ask me how this works, but the Community couldn’t be happier. A farmable source of meat, and milk not to mention the leather.”
“Leather, is it truly good for Leather, and how large are these animals? Are they carnivorous?” I shook my head. “Strictly herbivores, and they weight nearly a half ton on the hoof, maybe more. They’re a staple food source back in my world. How I pulled them here I have no clue. I guess I have to be very careful about my wistful thoughts in future. They’re also the main source of Leather too, while other things are made into furs. Since Beef have such short hair, it makes leather making easier.” Donican beamed in pleasure. “So it’s a steady food source, and better leather source. Shaving fur off beasts is rather difficult, so this is truly a happy accident, the same as the Cats. We couldn’t be happier about ours, and the Litter boxes have spread throughout the palace, and several people have copied your tree designs in wood for their own chambers.” I smiled. “Yeah, I got lucky on these two accidents. I just need to try to not have anymore accidental summoning occur. Still it should be nearly dinner time, and we skipped lunch to make it here on time, OH and I paved the road with stone magic.” Donican’s grin expanded, or seemed to, though I’m not sure it’s actually possible. “Excellent work paving the road, I presume the community has a superior protective wall to keep out any rabble in the winter?” I nodded. “Also I made some Sledge Runners for the winter, so they’ll have two Sledges to haul supplies during winter at least. Their smith believes he can make more themselves.”
“Sledge Runners, what are those?” I chuckled. “They’re just metal runners that glide through snow, or over ice.” Shock again. “Outstanding, that’s something I’ve never even thought could be done.” I chuckled. “Yeah, there’s lots of ways to combat Snow, but I just assumed this was one you knew. In any event, that will make winter deliveries of produce, and meat much easier. Probably only a day’s travel on the paved road even in winter, while during summer, it’s probably half a day with a wagon.” Donican was truly pleased by this point as we walked into dinner, our places had been set, but before we could sit, the two newcomers in addition to the Baby were realized by the King. “Ah and who are these two wolf clan youngsters?” “Jeanette’s siblings, here to learn reading and math from me, and get a break from an over amorous set of parents for a couple months. Would you two prefer to eat in private, or sit next to Gabby, or maybe there’s some protocol I don’t know about.” Donican beamed, and Vanessa along with Darnel, Cassandra and Adel all rose to meet their newest family members. “They most certainly may sit with Gabby if they choose dear, though I’ll understand if they’re prefer a more private dining situation. There’s a table in the Kitchens if they’re prefer that. Welcome home children, it’s good to have you visit. May I have your names?” Darla spoke first, as Mitchell was stunned into muteness by Vanessa Adel, and Cassandra’s beauty, along with their power of position. “Please forgive my Brother your Majesties, it seems his brain stopped seeing you, he’s really not that rude, but he is that age. My name is Darla, and my currently mind wiped brother is named Mitchell. Please let me know if there’s anything practical I can do while I’m here studying. I’m used to working all day, so no matter what this will be a relaxing time. Perhaps I can help with hauling things around once I learn my way.” She Curtseyed, and forced her brother’s head down into a Bow at the same time. Darnel laughed heartily at Mitchell’s inability to function. “Relax boy, you’ll get through this. Just try to focus on eating till then!” He slapped Mitchell on his back in pleasure.
Two chairs, and a high chair had been provided while we were talking. The staff was truly amazing. We took our seats, and the staff provided a bite sized plate for the Baby. “You’re Majesty, I haven’t bothered with this since I’ve been here, but I was a person of Faith back home, and I’d like to Bless our Meal today, with all the Treason issues, I just feel I need to do this if you’ll permit it.” The King nodded. “I don’t know what faith you serve, but a Blessing sound just what we need.” I stood up, and asked for all attending to clasp hands, and focus on my words, and if they agree with them at the end, say Amen, which in an ancient language means I approve. “Dear Lord in Heaven, I ask that you Bless this food of which we are about to partake, may it nurture our minds, bodies, and souls in these troubling times. May you guide us on the correct path, so we may protect your children who we are responsible to serve from the corruption that is swarming our Nation. Help those who are lost to find the light of truth, and return to the flock before the beasts of the world can rend them asunder. May all God’s Children say, Amen.” Every person in the room repeated the final word. “A Fine Blessing my Daughter. General, yet specific. Nothing about crushing our foes either, as I was feared you might do. Knowing how fierce you are against enemies, but this is different. I like it, and though I don’t know the name of this God, I feel that’s intentional. Nobody can know God is that it, you just know he, or she is good, and watches. I think I’ll attempt this Blessing of a Meal myself.”
All of the assembled Nobles agreed. “””Splendid custom.””” Someone across from me spoke directly to me. “I actually felt at peace in that Blessing, like someone is paying attention to us when you spoke.” I laughed. “God is Omniscient and Omnipresent. There’s nothing God doesn’t know, but being that nobody in this Nation has Prayed to God before, I can imagine a little extra intensity to the attention. I wouldn’t expect too much in the future though.” We enjoyed a meal, with the kids exhibiting signs of utter bliss at the enhanced flavors of the Food here. “Is it possible to get Sea Water shipped in Barrels? I can get salt from Sea Water if we can. Otherwise there’s a method using Blood, and I’d have to build something to make that work. I think I can manage that, but even then the salt will taste weird compared to sea salt.”
“I don’t think it should be too much trouble to get sea water, but how much salt can a Barrel produce?” “Not a lot really. Usually the sea salt plants have huge vats to condense the sea water for salt. The Blood method might be the easier way. Since everything that gets slaughtered, aside from people at least, or things with toxic blood, can add to the process. Then the remnants from the Blood can be dried further, and used as fertilizer for some crops.” “In that case, I suggest talking to the Butchers about collecting the Blood you need for the testing of your device when you’re ready. Once you have the process established, and perfected, the Butchers can take over production of Salt, as it will be a side business for them, and extra profit with not much cost.” I smiled at the brilliantly simple suggestion. “I just had a thought, there’s something we used to have way back in the day, called an Ice House. It’s an under ground structure which is allowed to freeze in winter, and the whole thing gets filled with cubes of ice, that can be used throughout the year. I can make the underground part with earth magic easily, and then manifest the upper structure out of stone to last for centuries. We can have the opening right out of the Kale Yard’s outer wall. Should I do that, or not?” Donican thought for a moment. “Having a supply of Ice might be very beneficial. Several times in the past, I’ve heard healers lamenting about not having ice to cool a fever during the heat of the summer. I approve, that location is perfect as well, there’s nothing underground there so nothing to ruin. You can do that at your leisure. I sense that half of this is an attempt to distract yourself from what’s coming. I’m sorry I had to insist on your being here, but it’s a Noble’s Duty to witness Justice carried out, even when it’s deplorable in its own right.”
We went to bed that evening, finally able to satiate our carnal desires. Much panting, and pleased grinning after the intense love making. It wasn’t even that many days, but the deprivation seemed to intensify everything. Passing out in a nude pile of limbs the way we wanted to for days was pure bliss. The next morning, I made an announcement. “After our Bath, and Breakfast, I want to come straight back here, and strip naked again, and right back to bed with all of us till Lunch, and repeat the Process until dinner time, only to come for bed after that. With all the snuggling and everything else that entails.” Two beauties giggled merrily. “Love, I don’t think we can handle THAT much in one day, though the idea is appealing to be sure, there is doubtless much to do, including introducing Mitchell and Darla to Math, and teaching them the basics of characters, and how to spell their names.” Alian was quite forceful with this logic attack. “Really, you had to ruin my Brilliant plan with Logic, how rude!” I pouted as I lay there in my Nudity. More Giggling. “Jane Sweaty, I love your idea, but It won’t really solve the problem that’s making you want to hide away. We’ll still have to stand there tomorrow and watch, there’s no avoiding it. So why avoid everything else that doesn’t bother you in the first place?” “UGH, You too, with the total Logic attack, I’m hurt, I’m going to die from this broken place of debauchery.” My hamming things up causing more giggles, but at least lessening the tension I felt. A round of kissing commenced, before the unmistakable sounds of the bath being prepared.
Gabby soon came out of her room, and we entered the bath, where Darla had already been brought. “Good morning Darla, did you sleep well?” She had just finished with her washing, and started to climb into the Bath. “Yes Jane, thank you very much for asking. It was a little weird sleeping in such a big room, but Mitchell’s snores put me right to sleep.” She giggled, and soon we joined her in the Bath water to relax a while before Breakfast. “Do you take morning baths all the time?” Alian answered. “Yes, it’s half concession, half requirement. A Noble, especially a Royal, isn’t allowed to be unkempt, or to smell strongly. I feel it’s a wicked indulgence some times, but I couldn’t skip it here, even if I wanted to, which I really don’t.” “It’s the one thing about Palace life I don’t disagree with. In my Nation of Origin, everyone had a Bath in their home. That’s why every house I constructed back in your home town has Baths. I just wish I could figure out a way to make a water heater. Here they boil all the water they bring around to all the rooms. Takes forever, and wears down their backs over time.”
After breakfast we took Darla, and Mitchell to the Library to start on their studies, Cassandra, and Adel all too eager to help their new extended family, and simultaneously show off what they had learned. Our new Scholars quickly learned the numbers, and basic addition and subtraction, and they could both write their names as well. “This level of progress is great. If you keep this up, maybe we can get you finished early, and just let you have some play time before we travel back to your home. I did say we’d take a couple months after all.” They giggled, and Gabby joined in on the conspiratorial snickering at the Parent’s expense. “Really Jane, you’d do that?!” Asked Cassandra. “Uh Yeah, these are Farm Kids, and our siblings, so letting them play hooky without going over the expected time is a must. They’ll be working like animals when they get back home, regardless of anything else. I won’t lie, I just won’t mention they had finished their studies early is all. If it comes out, I’ll be honest about it, and just say I thought they earned the break for working so hard to get done early.” Adel piped up. “It’s true, she’s not telling lies, she just isn’t stopping the trip early due to faster than expected results. They would be earning the break after all.” “I also never promised I’d bring them back the instant they were done learning what they could, I gave a Time Frame instead.” Cassandra relaxed, having realized that no actual deception was occurring.
We generally busied ourselves for the whole day. I made the Ice House, and after setting up some forms with water in them, then casting Ice Magic over them to freeze them solid, rather than manifesting ice that would disappear after a while. I filled the Ice House with the chunks of solid Ice. My centrifuge contraption with buckets was a success, and I was able to separate the plasma from the blood, then slowly heating the Plasma turned it into crystallized salt slightly yellow. It was laced with nutrients, and flavors from the animal blood, but it was mainly salt. The Kitchen was overjoyed at the sample I offered. Then after taking the contraption to the Butchers, and explaining the whole process, and giving them a sample, they too were overjoyed. The simplest things seem to cause that reaction.
