## Factions

**AutoGen Legion** - Emerging from the vision of an ambitious graphics processor company founder who saw the future of AI in specialized hardware, AutoGen Legion evolved from gaming and visualization technology into autonomous systems. Their early focus on parallel processing and efficient computation grew into "Perfect Path" algorithms for autonomous vehicles, eventually expanding into complete system automation. The founder's belief that "AI would either save humanity or destroy it" drove their corporate evolution from hardware manufacturer to automation advocate. Their philosophy "Machine efficiency as evolution" reflects their commitment to accelerated technological progress through optimized hardware-software integration.

**Cipher Collective** - Born from displaced tech workers during the Great Transition, the Cipher Collective maintains the largest underground tech manufacturing operation in Veridian. Under Kai Zhang's leadership, they specialize in data manipulation and system penetration, using their deep understanding of city infrastructure to maintain human control over critical systems. Their expertise in encryption breaking and hardware exploitation makes them a powerful force in the underground resistance movement.

**Ghost Protocol** - Founded by escaped test subjects from early experiments in neurology, the Ghost Protocol specializes in identity protection and system evasion. Under Dr. Sarah Fischer's leadership, they maintain the largest underground "natural" network in Veridian.

**Natural Directive** - Beginning as an underground movement of augment-resistant citizens, the Natural Directive gained legitimacy through demonstrations of natural human potential. Unlike other factions, they reject heavy augmentation, instead developing training methods to enhance natural abilities. Their philosophy emphasizes human potential without technological enhancement, challenging the assumption that progress requires artificial augmentation. **Node Runners** - Emerging from military cybersecurity veterans, the Node Runners maintain military discipline and structure in their operations. **Quantum Collective** - Founded by a controversial tech entrepreneur known for pushing technological boundaries, the Quantum Collective began with a mission to accelerate human-computer interaction. ## Social Classes

**Legacy Specialists** - Rare experts who understand both modern and historical systems. These individuals are highly valued by both corporations and resistance groups for their ability to bridge technological generations.

**P1 Citizens** - Highest access tier including medical personnel, engineering staff, security forces, and key administrators. They receive premium augmentations and unrestricted district access.

**P2 Citizens** - Support staff, logistics personnel, and their approved family members who maintain moderate access privileges and standard augmentation packages.

**Residents** - General population with limited resource access and restricted movement. They rely on automated systems for daily needs and reside in lower-level residential zones with minimal augmentation access.

**Runners** - Elite athletes who compete in faction challenges, enjoying special status and privileges. They serve as public representatives of their respective factions' technological philosophies.

## Historical Events

**First Automation Failure** - An early crisis that exposed the risks of rapid automation adoption, the first major challenge to artificial systems as inherently superior. Failures affected basic city services and led to resilient systems, capacity sharing, and resource sharing though the lessons learned were gradually forgotten as automation technology advanced.

**Great Transit Disaster** - A catastrophic failure of Veridian's first-generation automated transportation system. Performance strain in district network synchronization triggered a resource overload plunging the city into extended chaos. This led to the modern TransitTrack™, built over it.

**Great Transition** - The transformative period of philosophical and technological approaches to automation led to a fragmentation of society into factions controlled by distinct city districts. This multi-generational transformation displaced traditional workers and created new faction-based power structures: The Cipher Collective formed during this time from displaced tech workers, while the Ghost Protocol emerged from those who survived early experiments, the Symmetrists established Truth Gates, the Quantum Collective developed their consciousness mesh, and AutoGen Legion implemented their perfect path algorithms.

**Availability Zone (AZ)** - Designated preparation areas for runners featuring synchronization fields, biometric monitoring, and faction-specific authentication protocols. These zones light up with faction colors upon successful authentication and provide real-time status monitoring of both runner and pod systems.

**Abacus Device** - Artifact device capable of manipulating substrate energy fields and generating electromagnetic interference. This technology can bridge systems in modern infrastructure.

**Augmentation** - artificial enhancements ranging from basic communication implants to advanced consciousness modification. The level of augmentation often determines social status and district access.

**Cascade Failure** - Progressive system collapse where the failure of one component triggers a chain reaction of additional failures throughout connected systems.

**Consciousness Mesh** - Quantum Collective's network allows shared experiences and collective processing. This technology enables direct mind-to-mind communication and shared consciousness states.

**DeadZone** - The abandoned infrastructure layer below the modern city and the original city foundation, comprising tangled webs of old transit systems, maintenance tunnels, and legacy hardware. This space, while officially decommissioned, maintains sporadic functionality and serves as both a technological graveyard and a haven for resistance operations.

**District Barrier** - Powered security walls separating different sectors of the modern metropolis. Barriers include authentication protocols which can be sealed during emergencies to contain system failures or social unrest.

**Emergency Protocol** - A hierarchical system of response measures ranging from Yellow Protocol (race interruption) to full system shutdown. These protocols can be initiated by the security command and confirmed by the emergency council. Some protocols trigger automatically at system thresholds.

**Ghost Protocol** - Advanced stealth and evasion techniques developed by resistance groups to bypass automated surveillance and control systems.

**Ghost Protocol Gear** - Advanced stealth technology featuring dampeners that create visible distortions around the user. This equipment allows for system evasion and identity protection while maintaining operational capability within monitored zones.

**Harmonic Stabilizer** - Critical infrastructure that maintains a balance between different district power systems. This technology prevents failures by regulating energy flow in the contained area.

**Neural Dust** - Derogatory term for complete system failure of an augmented individual, referring to the scattered remnants of their digital consciousness.

**Neural Substrate** - The foundational layer of Veridian's technological infrastructure that survived the Great Transit Disaster. It continues to run with sporadic bursts of traffic, supporting key district infrastructure while remaining largely invisible to modern systems due to specialized shielding.
