Loei tugged on the argyle sock excitedly, eager to try it on after winning it at the Gacha arcade. As she slipped her foot in, she felt something crinkle inside.
“Huh?” She peeled the sock off curiously and shook it. A small slip of paper fluttered out onto the floor.
“Ooh what’s that?” Amara asked, snatching up the paper. His eyes widened. “No way, it looks like some kind of ticket!”
“Seriously? Let me see!” Yira grabbed it from him. Her jaw dropped as she examined the glossy ticket closely. “A Silver Stratos voucher? This is crazy!”
She whirled to face Fujimi, waving the ticket. “This is like the gold one I stole from you before! Except a lower tier I think. However this sock ticket ended up here, looks like your karma came back around!”
Fujimi laughed incredulously. “That’s so bizarre. Why would they put an elite academy voucher in a sock as a Gacha prize?” He scratched his head. “Their admissions process seems really random if they just distribute tickets willy-nilly like that.”
Yira shrugged. “It’s all about profits, I bet. The harder it is to get those tickets, the more desperate people get spinning those rigged machines.” She popped a party popper left over from Loei’s birthday. “But hey, celebrate first, ask questions later!”
Confetti drifted down as Loei jumped up and down. “See Fujimi, your luck is changing! First the gold ticket that was actually yours, now this silver one!”
Yira clapped a hand over Loei’s mouth. “Hush you, let’s not dwell on the past.” She shot Fujimi a meaningful look. No need to remind him she’d pickpocketed the first ticket.
Fujimi just smiled good-naturedly. “Maybe you’re right though Loei. I’ve always been unlucky, so finding these tickets makes me wonder if I’m looking at life all wrong.”
Just then Amara pulled out another slip of paper from the discarded sock. “Wait, there’s more!” He examined it closely. “Says it’s a voucher for the ‘Stratos Creature Capsule Department?’ Weird.”
“No way, let me see!” Yira grabbed the voucher, eyes bulging. “Fujimi, this lets you pull one of their exclusive capsule creatures! Those are crazy rare drops that barely anyone gets.”
Fujimi gulped. “Seriously? First an academy ticket, now a…magical creature?” This windfall was getting out of hand.
Yira nodded enthusiastically. “With your crappy luck, guessing you got the socks nobody wanted that they loaded up with prizes. Like finding the golden ticket in the chocolate bar!”
She laughed at Fujimi’s overwhelmed expression. “Welp, no use standing around gawking. Let’s head home and tell your folks the good news!”

Later at dinner, Fujimi’s parents were as shocked as he was at the unexpected boons. “It seems Fate may have finally smiled upon you,” his dad Jin remarked, clapping him on the back.
“I’ll say!” his mom Sunita laughed. “Our little Fujimi, off to some magical academy and winning mythical creatures. You’re moving up in the world!”
Fujimi smiled bashfully under all the attention. “I kinda don’t believe it. Everything happening so fast.” He turned to Yira. “Least I know someone at the academy now to show me the ropes.”
Yira waved dismissively. “Psshh, you’ll be ruling that school in no time! But for now…” She pulled out the battered sock, eying it mischievously.
In a flash, she leaned over and pulled it onto Fujimi’s spiky black hair. “Keep those precious tickets safe, buddy!” Everyone erupted in laughter at his sock hat while Fujimi rolled his eyes but chuckled.
After dinner, Fujimi carefully tucked the two miracle tickets into his pocket. As he lay in bed, he shook his head in wonderment. For the first time, it felt like the universe was working in his favor. And it was all thanks to Yira and her family entering his life.
Fujimi smiled softly, thinking back to their hilarious sock shenanigans earlier. With their support, he felt like he could take on any challenges the future held. Destiny was calling, and he would answer.
The next morning, Fujimi headed downstairs to an excited commotion. “Look what came in the mail!” Loei shouted, holding up an envelope. “It’s from the academy!”
Fujimi took the fancy envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was an embossed letter formally congratulating him on being accepted to the prestigious Stratos Akademiya.
“I don’t believe it,” he murmured in shock. After a lifetime of bad luck, suddenly every star was aligning for him. It was surreal.
“Well believe it buddy!” whooped Amara, pumping his fist. “We gotta celebrate. Let’s all go out for a crazy dinner tonight!”
Everyone cheered in agreement. As they discussed restaurant options, Fujimi saw Yira watching him proudly. “Welcome to your new life,” she said with a playful grin.
Fujimi shook his head, still stunned by his abrupt change of fortune. But with his adoptive family surrounding him, he felt ready to embrace whatever lay ahead.
Later at the restaurant, they feasted on a lavish meal, jubilant over the bright future awaiting Fujimi and Yira. For dessert, the chef brought out complimentary cakes topped with sparklers.
“To new beginnings!” Fujimi’s dad Jin proclaimed as they clinked their glasses. Fujimi gazed around the table at the motley family he never expected but now couldn’t imagine life without. Together, he knew they could conquer anything.
After the dishes were cleared, Loei shyly presented Fujimi with a handmade card. “It’s for your first day at the academy,” she mumbled, staring at the floor.
Fujimi opened it to see Loei’s careful drawing of him in a wizard robe and hat, with a speech bubble that read “I’m going to be the bestest magician ever!” He had to blink back sudden tears.
“This is beautiful,” he said thickly, pulling Loei into a hug. “Thank you. I’ll keep it with me for good luck.”
Yira mussed up Fujimi’s hair affectionately. “You don’t need luck anymore.” She squeezed his shoulder. “You’ve got all of us believing in you.”
Fujimi met her poignant gaze, remembering how chance had brought them together. In Yira’s eyes, he saw his own hopes and uncertainties reflected - but with her irrepressible spirit to carry them through.
Tomorrow he would step into an unfathomable new world, but tonight, surrounded by the most unlikely yet caring friends imaginable, Fujimi simply basked in the warmth of finally finding where he belonged.
