Calador: The Rising Dawn
2 The First Quest

2 The First Quest

The first rays of morning sun penetrated the curtains of Aric’s small room in Eldoria, leaving the darkness of night behind. A gentle, warm glow settled on his sleeping place, slowly waking him from his dreams. Successful dungeon outings, shiny treasures, and the exciting prospect of new dangers playfully danced around in his head. Yet as anticipation grew within him, there was also a hint of nervousness. This was the day when everything would begin.

He jumped out of bed and hastily put on his clothes. A quick glance in the mirror revealed the dark circles under his eyes and the messy hair that made him look like a quintessential chaos. "Maybe I should put in a little more effort," he mumbled as he combed his hair and put on his glasses. But thoughts of his first steps as an adventurer left him restless; rising was hectic and full of expectation.

After hastily grabbing some food from a small pantry, he set off toward the Adventurers' Guild. As he wandered through the streets of Eldoria, he noticed the bustling atmosphere enveloping the city in the morning light. Merchants called out their wares, the air was filled with the scents of freshly baked bread and spices, and the chatter of adventurous citizens merged into a lively clamor.

As Aric arrived at the guild, the tavern was filled with life. Adventurers had already gathered at tables to check their equipment and discuss the final strategies for the upcoming mission. The excitement was palpable, and the laughter and shouting of the adventurers enhanced the sense of community.

"Hey, Aric!" someone called out from the crowd. It was Lirael, the sorceress, who came towards him with a radiant smile. "Are you ready for your first adventure? I hope you've slept well!"

"I didn’t sleep all night; I was way too excited!" Aric replied with a nervous laugh. "I can hardly wait for the adventure!"

"That’s the right attitude!" Lirael replied, ensuring her spellbook was securely stowed in her bag. "And don’t forget to pay attention to your gear. When we enter the darkness, you must be ready. We should all prepare well so we don’t get into trouble."

"Yes, I have my map and everything," Aric said, lifting his backpack. "I’ve read about the dungeons, and I know there are some traps we need to watch out for."

Lirael nodded approvingly. "Good, that shows you’ve done your research. But in a dungeon, theory is often not enough. You also have to trust your instincts. Let’s involve the others, then we’ll finalize the plan."

Aric followed Lirael to a large table in the middle of the tavern, where the other guild members had gathered. The guild master, a head taller than everyone else, sat at the head of the table, watching the group while playing with a mug of mead.

"Good that you’re all here!" the guild master laughed, glancing at Aric, who took a seat at the table. "Today is an important day. As many of you know, we have a new recruit among us. Let’s give him a warm welcome!"

Some of the adventurers applauded and shouted encouraging words. Aric felt flattered yet overwhelmed. He had the impression that he would be challenged not only by his past experiences but also by the group dynamics.

"Aric is here to face the jungles of a new dungeon!" the guild master said with a broad smile. "And that means he must rely on his companions. Today marks our journey into the unknown, and I hope each of you is ready to fight and put your skills to use."

"We’ve heard that a mysterious artifact is hidden in a nearby dungeon," Lirael added. "It’s said to be an ancient relic that promises extraordinary power. We’ve been warned that it is guarded by evil creatures, so we must be careful."

"Let’s split into groups," suggested another adventurer, a man with shoulder-length dark hair and a muscular build. "Some of us should explore the outer premises while others secure the entrance into the interior. It would be better to check the surroundings first before getting too close."

"I like this idea," Lirael agreed. "We should pool our strengths—that will help us safely enter the dungeon. How about we choose one from each of us as a leader for the different groups?"

Aric could feel the tension in the room as the adventurers made their proposals. It was a mix of excitement and nervousness as the leaders were chosen, and the various groups formed. Aric felt like a newly laid stone being placed on a building; he was the tallest among the adventurers, but the foundation was still lacking.

"I suggest that Aric goes with me," Lirael said, looking at Aric. "We both need to ensure that the way to the dungeon is coordinated and clear. The creatures that await us there are not to be underestimated."

"But what about me?" protested another guild soldier. "I have more experience than this newcomer!"

The guild master leaned forward. "We’ve all begun somewhere. That’s part of the training. If you're not involved, just wait. A fellow student can support you nearby. Go on, don’t let it show, every hand will be needed."

With that, the guild soldier backed down while everyone focused on the adventure.

Finally, the groups were distributed, and each adventurer was equipped with random items along with payments for their services. Aric felt the thrill in his stomach as he checked his additional gear: a short sword, a few healing potions, and the map of the dungeon he had secured. It was all there. He was ready.

"Are you ready, Aric?" Lirael asked as they left the guild building and approached the way to the dungeon.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"Yes, ready! I can hardly wait," he answered, hiding his nervousness behind a determined expression.

"Good. Let’s not forget: we’re not here to act impulsively. Teamwork is the key to any success," Lirael added while holding the map in her hand and studying it with a clear gaze.

The way to the dungeon was marked by dense forests where the trees towered, and the sunlight barely penetrated. The closer they got to their destination, the more Aric sensed changes in the air. It was a kind of oppressive silence that sharpened his senses and heightened his nervousness.

Before them lay the entrance of the dungeon, the gate overgrown with vine-like plants and appearing as if it hadn't been opened in centuries. "We are here," Lirael said, pointing to the gloomy gate. "Are you ready, Aric?"

"I… yes. Let’s go in," he said, his heart racing.

They stepped through the entrance, and a cool breeze rushed towards them, sending shivers down Aric’s spine. The walls of the dungeon were damp and slippery, and torches flickering in the deep shadows crackled softly. Together with Lirael, he walked cautiously, staying alert for any potential dangers lurking in the shadows.

"Stay close to me," Lirael whispered as she appeared to prepare a spell. Her gentle movements were elegant and precise. Suddenly they heard a haunting noise echoing through the narrow corridor. Aric held his breath, nervously looking around.

"What was that?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"We’ll find out soon," Lirael answered as she cast her spell, illuminating the torch in her hand. "The light will help us pierce the darkness."

To their surprise, they saw a gigantic shadow emerge from the darkness. A monster of enormous size with sharp claws and a terrifying maw crept towards them. Aric felt his heart start pounding in his chest.

"We need to retreat!" Lirael shouted.

But the monster had already begun to roar, revealing its horrific teeth.

"I think it doesn’t want to welcome us," Aric remarked, turning around quickly.

"Run, Aric! We have to go back!"

They raced down the corridor as the monster pursued them, its growl causing the walls to vibrate. Aric could barely hear his own screams as he tried to shake off the fast pace and the creeping horror behind him.

Suddenly, he felt himself step on something soft and nearly stumbled. With a startled cry, Aric fell to the ground. "Lirael, help me!" he called out, hoping she could distract the monster.

"I'm coming!" he heard her voice and felt her grab him by the shoulders, helping him back up. "Come on! We need to keep moving! The beast is faster than we are!"

With the pressure of the monster drawing closer, they pressed against the wall and looked around for an escape route.

"There!" Lirael shouted excitedly. "There’s a small niche! If we can squeeze in there, we might have a chance!"

Aric didn’t want to think about what would happen if they couldn’t shake off the beast, so he nodded hastily and sprinted for the niche. Lirael followed him, and they pressed as far into the opening as possible just as the monster slammed against the wall—a thrill of terror vibrating the ground beneath them.

"We're trapped," Aric whispered.

Lirael nodded and closed her eyes. She concentrated, and a bright light enveloped both of them. "Don’t bring it near us! It won’t devour us!"

The light pulsed brightly, and as the beast entered the room, it was blinded by the magic. It howled and writhed, trying to halt the light. Aric held his breath as he saw the glowing shimmer fill the area around them. He had never taken such risks before in his life, and now it seemed as if they had finally gained the upper hand.

"We have to attack it before it comes to its senses!" Lirael yelled, her voice steady. "It won’t last long!"

Aric hesitated, but time was pressing. Shaking, he reached for his short sword and prepared himself. He knew he had to try, even though fear seized him. "I’m in," Aric replied with determination.

Lirael closed her spell and raised her staff against the beast. "You’re a source of light, Aric. Show it! We can do this!"

With a courage he never thought he possessed, Aric stepped forward and let the light of the monster shine brightly through the darkness. It proved to be effective, though only temporarily. But as he attacked the shadow with his sword, he froze mid-motion.

"I can’t! It’s too huge!" he shouted, stumbling into a shadow. Obstacles appeared in his field of vision, and the monster's eyes sparkled before him in the darkness.

"Fight, Aric! You can do it! You’re much stronger than you think! Don’t let the light go out!" Lirael screamed, urging him to try again.

He felt the sweat on his brow; he had to do it. Aric took a deep breath, feeling the heat of the dungeon surround him. "Yes, I can!" he shouted. It wasn’t an easy undertaking for him; the thoughts of self-doubt that dragged him down were heavy and stifling.

He charged forward, launched himself at the beast, and thrust his short sword directly at the monster's body. A sharp pain coursed through his hand as the sword penetrated the creature’s flesh.

The beast roared, and the shockwave resonated even into the niche where they sought refuge. But Aric quickly regained his composure and pressed the attack against the creature's soft spots—just at the moment when another light, emitted by Lirael's magic, flashed.

"Don’t give up!" Lirael yelled as she spread magic around herself.

Aric focused on what burned within him. As he felt the pressure of the monster, a determination surged inside him. He realized he had something to lose; not only his life but also the chance to find energy and belonging.

With a loud scream, Aric delivered another strike aimed at the heart of the monster. This time he hit—both physically and emotionally. The beast trembled, and the darkness around them began to recede. A bloody mist streamed from the monster's body, and its eyes dimmed as it collapsed to the ground.

Lirael approached Aric. "You did it! You defeated it! Whatever you did," she cheered, "it worked! You struck it down!"

Aric could hardly believe it, the heat of the fight buzzing through his veins.

"We need to move quickly!" Lirael shouted and led him through the surrounding labyrinth, quickly finding other groups fighting in related halls.

"The others are waiting for us, come on!"

They quickly found their group and shared tales of Aric’s brave strike.

Unbeknownst to them, the light of day accompanied them through the darkness. During this first challenge, Aric learned more about himself than he had ever thought—and the community he had longed for was now within reach.

Finally, they reached a grand hall decorated with colorful crystals and mysterious symbols. In the middle stood a pedestal upon which the mysterious artifact lay—a shimmering crystal glowing in a deep blue hue, pulsating as if it were alive.

"This must be it! The artifact!" Lirael exclaimed eagerly.

Aric stepped forward and stared, fascinated, at the crystal. "It looks so powerful..." he murmured.

"Don’t touch it yet!" warned Lirael, hopping closer to the platform. "We should make sure we don't get infected by any curse from the dungeon. Let me cast another spell."

Aric nodded as Lirael concentrated.

With careful movements, she spread her hands and spoke words of magic. The crystal shone brighter, demonstrating its power. "With this energy, you should evaluate your memories and opinions about whatever we acquire here," Lirael recommended.

Aric looked skeptically at the crystal. "What if it's good or evil? What if we disturb the balance?"

"We must find a way to connect with it," she murmured calmly.

But before they could proceed, a loud crash shook the ground beneath them. Shadows, prowling heavily and growling breaths held them at bay, lingered at the corners of their vision, and darkness seemed to envelop them again.

"We must fight for the crystal!" Aric shouted, and the moment of hope that lay before them made him overcome his fear.

Lirael nodded and stepped behind him to protect the creature. They stared into the darkness and Lirael concentrated on her spell as the resistance drew closer.

And as the crystal was enveloped by a spell, it suddenly shone throughout the room, and Lirael spoke the final words: "Focus! Don’t give up! Let’s push back the darkness together!"

Aric felt strong as he stood beside Lirael, looking at the crystal. The team had come together, and with combined efforts, the light was ready to overcome the darkness. It was the moment he realized he was not alone.

With a clear cry, Aric shattered the shadow and the surreal being as Lirael thrust the azure magic into the darkness—it was a high cry of light against the threat. And the darkness could neither catch up to them nor achieve its goal.

In that triumphant moment, Aric felt the darkness around them lift, and the crystal was now within their reach. He had accomplished the impossible and firmly planted his roots in the Dusk Heroes Guild. Now he felt like part of something greater.

Dusk arose, and with it, the beam of light from a new adventure awaited them to protect the safety of their world. Aric knew that the next challenges were yet to bloom, but he was ready to face them. In the darkness, he had found his place—as an adventurer and as an up-and-coming hero.
