I woke up with a large gasp, air flooding into my lungs and filling me with some weird sensation. This was followed by a coughing attack as my body was barely able to handle the pain in my chest. I pawed around at my surroundings for my medicine, feeling the panic rose within me as I couldn't seem to -- My hand crawled around and felt an unfamiliar texture of the ground and grass, rather than the usual hardness from a plastic desk. Only for me to realize I wasn't sleeping in the hospital bed... or any bed at all.
I'd hated the fact that the first thing that I searched was my medicine. It was almost felt like I was reliant on them... which might be true, but I didn't want to admit it.
On the bright side, considering I hadn't taken any medicine for maybe the whole day, I thought it was good enough that the only thing that greeted me was the pain on my chest and not some kind of god telling me I had died on my sleep or something like that.
As I fully opened my eyes, I noticed that the weird sensation was actually coming from several bugs that were crawling on my body, some were biting on my skin. With a jolt, I ignored the pain and rose my body at once, shoving them away with my hands. I didn't have the chance to check on whether or not the bugs looked the same as the one on Earth, either way, bugs were scary.
Sitting up, I was stunned to find the bugs didn't swarm on my berries that still somewhat covered with my clothes. Feeling excited and lucky, I got up and went over to inspect them. Although they didn’t seem like much, they were my foods, at least for now.
I gluttonously swallowed the berries to every last bit of them. A thought of staying at this place crossed my mind but shook my head to throw such a thought away from my mind. I didn’t plan on remaining here forever. In fact, even though this place had fruits and berries, I still needed to search for water, not to mention it would be dangerous if I didn't try and move my body, for health reason and safety reason. Indeed, yesterday I got really lucky for some unknown reason but... just for how many times I could scare a monster away by screaming like that?
My guess: it wasn't much.
Still, I picked up as many fruits and berries as I could before venturing out. At least they would be incredibly useful for decreasing the danger in the short term.
"One step at a time," I muttered before I started walking forward.
Compared to yesterday, much to my surprise I already felt tired... like I couldn't brace myself to stand up and move any limbs from my body even though supposedly I only walked somewhere around 100 steps.
Opening my status screen to check my stamina, a frown formed on my face as I finished reading the status.
Dehydration (Mild): +50% Stamina consumption. -50% Resistance to dizziness. Drink enough water to remove the status.
Sleep deprivation (Low) : +50% Stamina consumption. -50 Resistance to sleep. Have enough and quality sleep to remove the status.
As far as I knew, the troops supposed to be coming into another world = getting insane buff. Not series of negative status. If I was adding them to my other two stats, my stamina consumption was now 250%.
Deciding to try and quantify it, I began to feel dizzy in my head. No. This wasn't because of my condition or Dehydration, I was just not a math person. But to put it roughly I guessed normally 5 stamina for an average person should be somewhere around 300 steps. While for me in a 'normal' situation it should be somewhere around 200 steps.
Aside from that, one such thought that only occurred to me after I read the status was the need for water. Not to mention If I truly was on a foreign planet then boiling the water first to purify them would potentially be necessary. Who knew what sorts of foreign bacteria existed in the water. I didn't know much about 'clean' and 'hygienic' but after spending some amount of time in a hospital, those two words had been ingrained into my mind.
Sitting up and continued walking for a bit, my plan remained unchanged but I had another priority that crossed my mind.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
While creeping my way and tiptoeing alongside the treeline. I kept looking at my surrounding, watching a group of wyverns like birds that had translucent fangs and claws with glowing patterns on the wing membrane and torso flying out from the trees, swaying out their scorpion-like tail.
The indoor rainforest swayed softly, almost invitingly, and their steps had become rougher and stepper. Not to mention there were a lot of small, lavender-hued, ground-dwelling round plants that had prickly skins on the area in front of me. Searching for the path with less of those plants, I had tried to not step onto those plants but much to my surprise, I felt a sharp pain pierced my foot.
Looking down, I saw their prickly skins sprung out from one of the plants like a spring-loaded spike. I didn't know about their power but it was clear that the 10-cm spike had enough sharpness to at least made my foot bleed.
I frowned for a moment as I noticed I had walked into a field of landmines, but that frown immediately shifted into a small grin.
I had found my other priority. Yes. It was the tool to defend myself. I didn't need a real weapon though, just a stick with those sharp needle should be enough to scare the beast away from me. After all, even though the previous rhinoceros and lizard didn't attack me, who would know if the other beast also wouldn't attack me?
But how did I extract the spikes?
First thing first, with an extra caution I tiptoed my way to the edge of this minefield and as the result, I got stung several times even though my foot wasn't stepped or anywhere near them.
I gritted my teeth while wondering what happened. Curiously I crouched under a screen of giant leaves, just at the near end of this minefield and tried to touch one of the plants.
There was a light sharp pain, even though there was quite a bit of distance between my finger and the plants... the spikes sprung out, piercing just right at the tip of my index finger.
As I watched my blood dripping out to the bottom of the spike, almost as if the plant itself was sucking my blood away. Only to retract back after three seconds had passed.
I didn't know the mechanism behind those spikes but after knowing that fact. Once again I waved my hand at the top of the plants, and slowly moving it closer to the plants, and once again, almost instantly the spikes sprung out but this time, I managed to draw my hand back and used my other hand to grab the plant by its spike, pluck it from the ground and slam it to the nearby ground. Destroying the carcass in the process and scattering the spikes.
"...."
I said those were plants, but if I took a closer look, it was nothing more than a tennis ball sized rock. The inside was filled with solid rock and there was no place or the mechanism of how the spikes could've just sprung out from it.
This revelation once again reminded me that I was clearly not on Earth. Of course, I didn't want to get stuck on thinking about a rock for too long, so by repeatedly rubbed two spikes together, surprisingly I managed to sharpen the edge of one of the spike.
Feeling contempt, I gathered the rest of the spikes and started breaking some saplings, then cutting some vines with the sharpened spike, and tied them together to create several arrows.
I cut another vine using the same sharpened spike, but this time I cut the vines into three part as if I was cutting a fish. Before I knew it, I had completely forgotten about my thirst and just kept focusing my attention to weave the vines together, creating a short but strong and flexible rope that I planned to use as a bowstring.
The rest of the process was an easy part, at least for me. Back on Earth, I had created several handmade bows just for the hobby. They weren't a good quality one but at the very least they could launch an arrow. Anyway, by feeling alone I could tell which wood that I could use as a bow.
Once again I cut a sapling which was no taller than my own body. Placing the wood on the ground, I held it in place at the top with my right hand. With my other hand, I pressed lightly against its middle. The wood swivelled until its natural belly faced right to me, and its back faced out to determine its natural curve.
Wiping the sweats away from my forehead and resting for a while, after my Stamina had regenerated back to 5, which was somewhere about 20 minutes or so. I started the shaping process. I placed the bow to the side and started marking them seven centimetres above and below the centre point of the bow and covered them with the vines to create the handhold.
Next, I placed the bottom end of the bow on my foot, and one hand atop the bow. With my other hand, I used the sharpened spike to carefully shave the wood off from unyielding spots from the belly and only stopped when both the upper and lower limbs curved similarly to each other. Then I cut notches that began at the sides and curved around toward the belly of the bow and in toward the handhold. Making the notches just deep enough to compromise the strength of the tips and hold the string in place.
The next part was stringing the bow, which I did it almost as easy as breathing through my nose... though I sometimes had a hard time to control my breathing.
Aside from the bow and arrow, I used the pointy part from the spikes to chip away one side of a large branch, forming a spear with a crude but sharp tip.
Either way, those weapons themselves might not do much in a real scenario, but having some kind of a weapon on my hand gave me an extra bit of confidence,
