Introduction
I’m heading back to my dorm from the library when a breeze sends shivers down my back. “I should have worn another layer,” I think, reflecting that being from Massachusetts might have given me a weather-based superiority complex. As I tread through the dead of night, the only thing that lights my way is the oddly spaced-out lights that illuminate the brick path of the north green. Resisting the urge to scroll through my phone I try to decide what I want to do once back in my room, shuffling through my options like a poorly made Rolodex, my viewable options limited. I look up at my dorm, regretting the decision to live on the fourth floor. Fumbling while opening the door, I looked around hoping no one saw me standing there awkwardly rubbing my wallet against the door. I trudge up the four flights of stairs pushing open the door to my dorm, seeing my unfolded laundry staring back at me. Tossing my dirty clothing into my hamper I get a whiff of my own BO, grimacing I debate taking a shower, but I’m so exhausted I decide I can wash up in the morning.
A beam of light hits my eyelid as I suddenly sit straight up. My eyes dart around, and I notice the intensity of light streaming through my window seems irregular. My thoughts head towards the worst, “Did I miss any of my classes?” stretching to reach my phone, I suddenly realize that all of the technology in my room has ceased to exist. Ripping my covers off of me I step out of bed, earnestly searching for my glasses hoping my eyes are deceiving me. Slipping my glasses onto the bridge of my nose, my eyes confirm the absence of everything modern --a gaping hole in the middle of my room where my ceiling light used to be seems to taunt me as my eyes widen in surprise.
Chapter 1
In the middle of Newark, large geometric objects could be seen moving down Main Street. Deafening sounds filled the air as the metal dragged across the pavement, screams could be heard in the distance. Live wires dangled from telephone poles slithering like snakes popping and cracking, as the energy discharged into the empty shells of abandoned cars on the street. The storefronts of the Newark business stood empty, shattered glass could be seen everywhere, while unattended computers and phones seemed to communicate orders to washing machines and refrigerators. There was a strange unified pattern to this scene, like a small child orchestrating a grand battle, the semblance of a military formation could be seen as microwaves and window air conditioners crowded the street.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
“TOASTER!” yelled Commander SonyTM, “What are you staring at, get to work and check the buildings for our brethren”.
My cold metal body waddled down the decrepit husk of what used to be a university campus. “I wonder what this looked like before the ‘awakening’,” I sadly thought to myself, the once green grass of the school now bare, stood brown, gasping for nutrients. A door stood open “I guess I should start my search” I mumbled, hopping up the stairs and into the dark hallway of a supposedly abandoned dorm. Suddenly the door closes behind me and I’m torn from the ground like a mere object, dangled from my vestigial power cable. Defenseless I wait for my impending doom as the hands of ape-like creatures throw me into a makeshift prison cell. The cold floor greeted me as I passed out.

Splashed with water I suddenly regain consciousness and what could only be described as searing pain travels across my entire body as I lose consciousness once again. I wake up later, now dry but confused, “What was that?” I whisper to myself.
A gruff voice responds beside me “That’s called water-induced circuit-pathic pain”.
I reorientate myself towards the voice, and I see the mangled body of Commander SonyTM. his television screen flickering on and off “I thought only biological organisms felt pain” I exclaimed.
“Boy,” he says, “that’s a lie us higher-ups told you so lower tec grunts you would join the cause”.
“Where are we right now?”
“Son, humans have captured us"
