Chapter Eight

> Basic Environmental Setup

> Depending on the inhabitants and style of your dungeon, you may have to artificially create a sustainable environment. Key factors to maintain are temperature, breathable air and water.

This... This is a guide? Where are the--

Henla stops just short of opening the shop, freezing and wondering if just thinking about doing the thing would be punishable considering she'd already done it. She's not going to do it on purpose again, but the first time she'd done it she didn't think anything about it. It was a reflex.

She waits for Zenya to say something but only notices a quick touch that says "I'm watching you" and then nothing. She might be safe? This is hard. Was she curious, proactive, or was this just a fear response? No, it's merely curiosity. She doesn't want to second guess everything she does, wondering if it's a fear or trauma response.

> There are various edible molds, fungi, and lichen that may be able to sustain a small group of simple creatures within certain temperature variants. These can be grown in or on surfaces that are considered hazardous or inhospitable to other forms of life and can be the base of an entire agricultural society removing the need to have tracts of loose soil. Be warned that the spores they release to reproduce may be toxic to your inhabitants even if the mushroom itself is not. Some fungi, lichen and molds may also harm or help each other.

>

> Giant mushrooms can be food or structures if there are not a variety of materials that can be worked into physical structures. There are also hanging fungal structures to build across the ceilings or over ravines in large caverns. Don't forget that the walls of ravines can also be used as building surfaces for any structures you may want to build. You're only limited by your creativity.

So she wasn't crazy for wanting mushrooms. But how'd she know about cave mushrooms. She doesn't think there were any caves around her home. Well, she hadn't done any exploring at all. Where'd she get this knowledge?

As she's thinking she feels a growing sense of fear and unease. And feels more anger at the lack of anger. She doesn't like the fact that she's so worried about failing and pushing herself to destruction attempting to accomplish something. She has time. They have time. There's no reason to rush. Hadn't she said the same to Zenya?

Is there a way for me to access my previous logs? Censored, of course, so that I can see the progress I've already made? I know things that I shouldn't. Things that feel instinctive. Or is this because I'm a core now?

... There's some evidence that you were allowed to work and then... "reset". To see if you could achieve the same thing in a smaller amount of time with less trial and error. A test in efficiency.

I really didn't mind cleaning clothing. I was saddened by knowing I didn't have any other skills, but my life was a good life...

Zenya doesn't respond and Henla goes back to the guide.

Oh. There's an idea. She could have started with goblins and created a vertical society. Well she still can. Below ground and above ground. Her inhabitants may not necessarily kill one another. They may not become friends, but maybe they could establish trade? Underground resources for above ground resources?

> If you or your dungeon denizens are incapable of building larger structures remember that changing environmental factors may create a new environment which will also reward you credits. If nothing else, digging into your environment to create caves, caverns and hidey holes can also be used to make new structures. The materials you remove can be used to create new areas or converted into other useful materials.

Henla idly wonders if she should have tried digging caves or hills for her people to hide in instead of just creating an environment. To be fair she shouldn't have brought them over as quickly as she had. They did help her build up the area once she'd gotten the materials. No. They hadn't. She'd hoped they would. When...

Henla shudders. False memories. Or buried memories. Developed reflexes.

> For most of the inhabitants of carbon based worlds oxygen is a key gas but can harm as well as help. When creating a sustainable environment, enclosed or otherwise, please make sure that you have breathable air. Breathable air is composed of several different gasses and can quickly become toxic if the wrong balance is achieved. Please note that this is also dependent on environmental factors. Some materials, creatures, and plants, will put out or deplete certain gasses and materials.

Are there tools or ways to check for the toxicity levels? Or not toxicity. Different things are affected by different things. What is toxic for one might not be toxic to others... Are there tools and guides on what different inhabitants need? There's probably a tolerable upper and lower limit as well...

Well, there you go.

> Please note that the intelligence and wisdom of your inhabitants may help or harm your environment. If the creatures you have are from an advanced society and you put them in a primitive environment, your inhabitants or your environment may change. Likewise with putting primitive creatures into an advanced environment. To reiterate, your environment and its inhabitants are locked in a synergistic relationship that will either allow them to flourish or kill one or both.

Wait. Were Alfain advanced? They'd adapted quite admirably. So many factors to keep track of. Can she make notes? Or does this information just go into her database and become a part of her? Does she need to consult her notes until she gets it right?

> Providing moisture can be done without having large bodies of water. Humid environments can provide moisture that can be collected but also may make breathing difficult. Depending on ambient temperature your inhabitants may lose moisture faster. High humidity may increase molds, mildews, and lichens, and if they're not part of your environment, they may soon become a primary feature. High humidity may also leech heat from or overheat your inhabitants.

> Be very careful when putting different inhabitants in your dungeon. Not all creatures get along with their own kind or others not of their kind. When thinking about picking or allowing inhabitants into your dungeon take care to watch for any rivalries or blood biases. A blood bias is a form of racial discrimination wherein a creature intrinsically and instinctively has a very strong hatred towards another creature without any interactions to act as a catalyst.

Oh. Oh, dear. Wait. She'd skipped right past the fact that her inhabitants could possibly kill her and wondered if the kits and kids would kill each other. What did Kimlxik do to her? She values her life. Or she did. Does she not? No, she just doesn't think about it. That's concerning.

> intrinsically and instinctively has a very strong hatred towards another creature without any interactions to act as a catalyst.

> As you become more advanced you may be able to directly modify the items in your dungeon into more advanced versions. For instance, small mushrooms may become large or gain specialized functionality. Be aware that changing items may change your environment. Some functions may make your environments less inhabitable or more inhabitable.

And more things to keep track of. Wait. Does this mean she doesn't have to buy a spirit tree? Could she perhaps imbue a tree until it became one? Would that affect the trees around it? Wait. The area is saturated in aether, would one develope rapidly on its own? Would trees keep turning and absorbing the aether until this world became uninhabitable. Another shudder.

> aware that changing items may change your environment. Some functions may make your environments less inhabitable or more inhabitable.

> Different creatures may have different biologies allowing you to separate dungeons by making areas that are harmful to some inhabitants and helpful to others. This may also be used to split your area into safe zones and danger zones to keep areas separated for experimentation without potentially costing your entire population. This may not stop your inhabitants from fleeing through the danger zones into other areas, and they may potentially contaminate these other zones.

>

> Please note that you are not safe from your inhabitants. If you push too hard and they are aware of your existence, they may attempt to destroy you. Some inhabitants who become aware of your existence may treat you like a god. You are not a god and encouraging this behaviour never ends well.

So she's not crazy, it really is possible. And it never occurred to her until she'd seen that they might attack one another. Oh. Alara had every reason to hate her and many opportunities to end her. But she'd trapped them, hadn't she? Now she feels disgusted with herself. She'd meant to protect them, not cage them. So much to keep track of!
