Chapter 1

The young girl moves the mug to her mouth. Her lips touch the warm liquid; with joy, She drinks the coffee. A shine annoys her eyes. At her side, a young man cleans the golden watch that decorates his wrist.

"Can you stop fucking with that for one second?"

"You are jealous because dad didn't give you anything."

"It was your birthday..."

"And? Even so, they didn't give you anything for yours."

"Ugh, I didn't ask for anything. I don't want anything from dad."

"I didn't ask For anything." The young man mimics the voice with a mocking tone.

The young girl rolls her eyes. The sound of high heels interrupts the discussion.

"Katherine, the bathroom is empty." The woman enters the kitchen. She wears a black office suit; her hair is still wet.

"Thanks, mom." Katherine gets up from her chair.

"I want to use the bathroom too." The young man argues.

"Bryan, let your sister go first."

The young man clenches his fist with anger.

Katherine walks away without first showing her middle finger to his brother. The black nails decorate her hands.

The young woman carefully passes the eyeliner around her eyes. The black highlights her brown eyes. She sprinkles a little pink powder on her cheeks; her pale skin glows, and a heavy layer of black eye shadow covers her eyelids, followed by lipstick of the same shade.

"Hurry up. I'm pissing myself." Bryan bangs on the bathroom door.

"Line up." Katherine answers calmly while she purses her lips. After her makeup routine is done, she waits a couple of extra minutes before leaving.

"It was about time!" The young man rushes into the room.

"What's your problem? You can't take a no for an answer?"

"Shut up, Kathy."

"Learn to lose. I can't imagine how you will react when someone rejects your love confession."

"Nobody's going to reject me. I'm not as ugly as you are, pig face, fool, idiot."

The young girl ignores her brother's tantrum.

"I'm going, mom!"

"See you at night, sweety! I left the food ready for dinner!" The mother's voice answered from the kitchen.

"Uhu..." Katherine let out a sigh. "Again, working late..." The young girl mutters as she leaves the house.

Music is playing through her headphones; Katherine bobs her head at the rhythm of the drum. Her concentration is interrupted by the figure of a man approaching from the other side of the street.

A middle-aged man walks with difficulty toward the girl. The man squints at Katherine as if he's looking directly into the sun.

"Hello?" The man says with a raspy voice.

Katherine ignores the man and keeps walking.

"Wait, don't go. I... I don't know where I am. I need help." The man approaches from behind.

"So early they bother me." Katherine removes her headphones. "Where you come from?"

"I... I don't know..."

"You have to come from somewhere. What's the last thing you remember?" Katherine says this without turning around.

"I woke up close to the highway, a few blocks from here." The man raises his hand to his head. The pain appears in his brain. "Weird, you are the first person I have seen since then, also..."

"I think I have time." Katherine looks at her cell phone. "Let's go."

"Oh, thank you." The man covers his eyes when looking at Katherine.

They both begin to walk down the street.

"I appreciate it. I was a little scared. Waking up in the middle of the street with no one around surprised me."

"Yeah, yeah... Shut up. Shortly, we will find someone to help you with that."

Katherine maintains her stoic expression, always looking straight ahead. The man, meanwhile, staggers from left to right, trying to keep up with the young woman.

Both reach the highway. Katherine can see an ambulance in the distance.

"Oh, thank you very much; I appreciate it, but I think there's something wrong with me, with my eyes. when I look at you... is like watching the sunshine..."

"Whatever, hurry up." Katherine shoos him away with her hands.

The man says goodbye with a smile and turns around.

"Hello? I need help." The man approaches the back of the ambulance. The rear doors are open. "Hello? Is anyone... here?

The man lays his eyes on a shape. A body lays down on a stretcher. He can see the features of the face, the eyes out of the sockets, and a big hole in the back of the head. The man raises his hand to his nape, and his lips tremble.

"Is this a joke...? It can be... it's me..." Around the body, he can see the shapes appear little by little, shadows that move around his body. He can see the paramedics pass through his ethereal body.

The man, dragging his feet, returns to Katherine.

"You get it now?" The young girl looks across the street. She can see a man talking desperately with a cop.

"I..."

"You are dead."

The man shakes his head.

She nods.

"Then... I guess..." The man stumbles between his words as memories come to his mind. Wrong time to cross the street; a black car, a young driver, and darkness. "Oh my god, my family, my daughter." The man's knees give out.

"I don't have much time. The sooner you realize your situation, the sooner I go to class."

"Are you an angel?" The man looks straight at Katherine's face. The glow radiating from the girl blinds him.

"None of that. I'm just an unfortunate woman cursed by birth."

"What awaits me now?"

"I don't know. I know that you have to go far away."

"Go? Where to?"

"I don't know."

The man looks down. A tear falls down his cheek.

"I understand. I have not been a saint... Where am I going to end up?"

"Don't worry about it. I'm the only one capable of seeing your true last moments. Leave with a smile."

The man nods, remembers his family, and concentrates on the happy moments of his life with his friends. His warm smile lights up his face.

"Thank you."

The man's body dissolves into white particles that ascend to the heavens.

Katherine watches the clouds for a few seconds before spitting on the ground.

"About time, how annoying... I'm going to be late for class."

Katherine turns around towards the school.
