There were no more wolf attacks ever since Thomas became a knight, not even in the forest. Many attributed the phenomenon to him killing the ones that entered town, but Thomas knew it was because Morag had stopped showing herself carelessly. The wound inside him burned, but life still continues.
At one point there is an issue with raiders in another town, so a company of knights are dispatched to take care of it. Thomas is the leader of that group, and he earned another achievement from that expedition. The king takes notice of him.
In the king’s courts, the king was sitting among his attendants.
“Gentlemen, I have been hearing much about a young knight by the name of Thomas. I would like to hear your thoughts on him.”
“Your Majesty, Thomas is one of the most skilled knights in the kingdom. He has been training since he was a boy and has grown into a remarkable fighter. He is a master of the sword, and his tactical skills are unparalleled.” The first attendant who frequently talks to the knights says.
“Indeed, Your Majesty. I have seen Thomas in action on the battlefield, and he is a force to be reckoned with. He is fearless, decisive, and able to lead his men with great skill and precision.”
The king nods. "I have heard much about Thomas's skills as a knight, but what of his etiquette and political savviness? Can we trust him, one of common birth, to represent our court well?"
"Your Majesty, Thomas may come from humble beginnings, but he has been trained in courtly manners and is well-versed in protocol. There are still some doubts from the noble circle, but there has never been an incident he hasn’t been able to resolve. Also, he is highly regarded by his peers."
The second attendant adds, "Indeed. Thomas has the support of nearly all of Brigadoon, including the nobles and commoners alike. He is a servant of people from all walks of life."
The king nods. “What of his loyalty to the crown?”
The attendants thought for a moment. “He is the epitome of loyalty, Your Highness. He has dedicated his life to the service of the kingdom and has always been willing to put himself in harm's way to protect it.”
"Very well, I trust your judgment. Thomas shall be made part of my personal guard. To assuage worries, he will receive etiquette training from a specialist."

"Thank you, Your Majesty. I am sure Thomas will serve you with great honor and dedication."
“Bring him to me at once. I want to speak with him.”
The attendants nod and exit the room, leaving the king to ponder his decision.
Fenella approached the throne, "Father, I overheard your conversation. Please allow me to train Sir Thomas in etiquette."
"Fenella, this is a matter of the kingdom. I know you are fond of this knight, for whatever reason that you will not tell me, but I cannot let my daughter's feelings influence my decisions."
“Remember when I was little, the last time we were here. I snuck away from my guards and told you I went exploring Brigadoon on my own.”
“I remember. What does this have to do with it?”
“I wasn’t alone. Thomas was with me. I asked him to accompany me. Even back then, all of the commoners listened to him. I feel like I was safer with him than any of my guards. Also, he is the only one to treat me like a normal girl, rather than a princess. That is why I fell for him.”
"So that is why…” The king mutters to himself and then ponders for a long time.
“You aren’t angry?”
“No. That incident was so long ago that I have already processed it.”
“Please don’t punish Thomas for anything. It was better that he was there than if I had gone alone.”
“Very well, Fenella. I won’t punish him… As for his training, I understand your feelings, but Sir Thomas simply does not have the reputation, or the funds, to sufficiently compensate for your affection. He must prove himself worthy."
"What has he not proven already?” she says loudly. “Please, Father. Let me train him in etiquette and politics. I will make sure he becomes the perfect knight who can win your approval and anyone else’s."
“His worthiness to be my personal guard and his worthiness to court you are two different measures!” Then he sighs. “I just want what is best for you, you know.”
Princess Fenella looks at him hopefully.
“Fine. I will do what you say.” he eventually gives in and lets Fenella do what she wants.
After a few moments, Thomas is brought before him.
“Thomas, I have heard much about your skills and dedication to the kingdom. I would like to offer you a position as part of my personal guard. You would have the honor of serving me directly, and I have no doubt that you would excel in this role.”
Thomas bows his head, “Your Majesty, it would be an honor to serve you in this capacity. I will do my best to live up to your expectations.”
“I have every confidence that you will, Thomas.” There is a small ceremony and a discussion with other officials in the room, then the king says, “In addition, you will receive etiquette training from my daughter, Princess Fenella. Know that I will not tolerate any behavior unbecoming of a knight or a member of my court.”
Thomas is surprised, but responds, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Welcome to the personal guard.”
