Beams of light shone through the dense treetops, illuminating patches of the forest ground. A light breeze swayed the leaves and blew Elroad’s blonde bangs out of his face. He remained crouched behind a tree, eyeing the creature in the forest clearing It grazed about, its radiant white hair swaying in the wind. Atop its head protruded a long, pointed horn.
“Hey, pass me the knife” said Elroad
“You sure man?, your aim sucks and you’ve never done this before”. Said the boy next to him
“Just give it”
The boy reached into his tunic pocket and pulled out an ornate looking knife. It was small and appeared fragile, but possessed power that the two had yet to fully understand. Jeweled patterns lined the black hilt. He passed it over to Elroad, who loosely gripped the hilt and readied his arm in a throwing position. He adjusted his position, to get more cover from the bushes in front. The fabric of his pants rubbed against the rough tree bark. With the exception of birds chirping, the forest was silent. Elroad whipped his arm forward, releasing the dagger from his grip. It soared through the air, piercing the side of the unicorn before it had a chance to react. A pulse of wind boomed from the impact and the unicorn tumbled sideways, flailing about in a panic. As if it had been thrown, it rolled and continued to tumble, colliding against every tree and rock it moved past. It bleated savagely. As Elroad crept up to it, the loud bleating faded to a whimper, then to complete silence. Elroad examined the creature, before looking back and calling out:
“It’s dead! Get the wagon”
The other boy grinned and immediately sprinted off, returning a brief moment later dragging an old beaten wagon through the lush expanse of greenery.
“How does it feel knowing we’re going to be rich Aulos?” said Elroad
The boy beamed, looking at the dead unicorn with excitement
"It feels awesome” said Aulos
The two boys high fived each other and lifted the unicorn off the ground, tossing it into the wagon. The wagon made numerous crackling noises. Its wooden planks nearly collapsed underthe weight of the white steed.
“Now, we just need to find a city to sell it to” said Elroad
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
“Would’ve been easier if you didn’t lose the map yesterday” said Aulos
“Ah well, you see. . . I have a plan for that” said Elroad
“And what is it?” said Aulos
“Once we leave the forest, we’ll pick a direction, and we’ll keep walking in it until we find a city.”
Aulos groaned, but within moments the pair were well on their way.
With each step he took, Elroad’s legs felt more and more like mush. Him and Aulos were wanderers. Or adventurers, or thieves depending on the day. They spent the majority of time traversing the roads of the Medetius continent, moving from city to city, exploring vast dungeons, completing odd jobs from time to time, and sometimes resorting to thieving from caravans. They only had two aims in mind: surviving, and seeing the world. Medetius was an enormous land, full of mystery and bewildering wonders that would make even the richest, most powerful kings light up with joy. It was a land of enchantment, and the duo was determined to see it all.Of course, survival came first and so making money was priority. From what Elroad understood, unicorns were an overwhelmingly rare species, and their corpses could likely be sold for obscene amounts of gold. Their hair, horn and hooves could be used in crafting, and their flesh in cooking.
Elroad and Aulos were lucky today, and neither of them could stop grinning thinking about the fortune they were about to amass. Aulos stopped momentarily, letting his arms rest. He had been pulling the wagon the entire time. He had a lean figure, slightly muscular. His hair was unkempt, long, and red. They had been walking for a few hours now. Of course, that was only an estimate since neither of them had any way of telling the time.Pocket watches were the creations of wizards, and that might’ve been something he’d have to get a hold of soon, Elroad thought. In the distance, enormous city walls could finally be seen. The city looked massive and towered over all else in their field of vision. Roofs of buildings peaked over the imposing walls, and Elroad could just barely make out a castle deep into the city.
“It’s time baby!” Elroad said.
The excitement gave him all the energy needed to make that final stretch. He bolted towards thewalls, waiting for Aulos to catch up. The two of them noticed a giant coat of arms hanging on the entrance to the city. It prominently featured a silhouette of a horned, white horse.
“We’ve hit the jackpot” Elroad Said.
“Um , actually. . .” Aulos said, but was Elroad was already off.
They crossed the bridge and entered the city. The streets were bustling, with plenty people walking and shopping about. Various stalls were set up. They sold a wide variety of items such as jewels, leathers, and Elroad even spotted a weapon shop further into the city. Aulos noticed passersby eyeing them. Some with disgust, some with utter shock. People paused and pointed at them whispering to each other. Aulos tapped Elroad’s shoulder
“Hey, dude, we should probably get out of here” he said.
“Well yeah, after we find a place to sell the unicorn to!” said Elroad
Suddenly two knights, clad in silver armor adorned with the cities coat of arms walked up to them.
“You sick fucks are under arrest”, they said.
