Chap 4 -Weight of the Shadows

Chap 4 -Weight of the Shadows

As Lucas and Jed maneuvered the narrow roads toward the town's edge, the rhythm of the engine rippled through the still air. The sky remained dark and foreboding, with an increased likelihood of rain. The only sound that eased the tension in the car was the steady beat of the windshield wipers. Having the headlights illuminated the desolate road ahead of them, Lucas's grip on the steering wheel became tighter.

GoreCorp was a life sentence as opposed to merely a job. Lucas constantly felt a little uneasy, although he had come to terms with it several years ago. It was the same tonight. They maintained a strict set of rules that Rae had diligently developed and refined over the years. The objective was obvious: eliminate the target and deliver a message.

Rae's words, "Make it brutal," repeated in Lucas's thoughts, harsh and unforgiving.

Jed lit a cigarette right next to him, his eyes narrowing from the smoke. "Do you think this one is going to be as messy as it sounds?"

Lucas glanced over, Jed's face in harsh shadow caused by the cigarette's brightness. "Subtle doesn't fit Rae's style. You know about it.”

Jed took an inhale and grinned, the corner of his mouth twitching. “Yes, but I am interested as to who irritated her this time. She has lately been tense.” Lucas remained silent. Rae was a natural force, her emotions as unpredictable as the storms that ravaged the town. But that was not for them to ask. They had duties to do, and pondering why Rae did what she did would only make things more challenging.

Lucas parked the car, the roar of the motor fading into the darkness, as they reached their destination—a run-down warehouse beyond the town. With its shattered windows and chipping paint, the building bore witness to years of neglect and stood vigil like a sentinel. It was the ideal location for this kind of work—secluded, quiet, and hidden from prying eyes. The cool night air bit their skin as they got out of the car. Lucas could feel his muscles tensing up and his blood beginning to race with adrenaline. The thrill of the chase and the fury of the battle was what he lived for. Yet it was also the part of him that he resented the most and the moment he dreaded. The memories came rushing back as they got closer to the warehouse. His mind replayed old missions, which included bloodstained flooring, pitch-black hallways, and their targets' screams. "All set?" Lucas was brought back to the present by Jed's voice, which broke through the mist of memories.

Instinctively, Lucas reached for the revolver holstered on his side as he nodded. "Let's finish this up."

Slipping into the shadows as they entered the warehouse, they moved with a precision that belied their experience. Somewhere inside was the target—a man who had risked going against Rae's strict rules by betraying GoreCorp. There was no hope for forgiveness or capacity for mercy. Death was all that was left to await him. The scent of rot and oil pervaded the room, while the sound of dripping water echoed across the empty area. As they made their way down the dark hallways, Lucas was able to hear the steady beating of his own heart. As they neared their target with each stride, the anxiety increased significantly.

Lucas was suddenly drawn to a sudden flash of movement. He instantly moved his body to raise the weapon. A figure darted across the room, and Lucas shot without hesitating. The sound of the gun echoed throughout the warehouse as the bullet struck its target.

There was silence after that. Lucas's heart was beating rapidly in his chest, and his breath was strained. With Jed right behind him, he took a cautious step forward. The truth of what they had done dawned on them as they got closer to the fallen figure. Blood was pooling around the lifeless corpse as it lay on the ground.

They chose to live a life in which death was a frequent companion. Yet, despite the darkness, they had a purpose and a diabolical justification for what they were doing.

Lucas mumbled, his voice barely audible, "Let's finish this."

Jed nodded, and the two of them moved coordinated to finish the objective, their minds focused on the task at hand. The world outside seemed to disappear as the shadows drew nearer, leaving only the severe, merciless truth of their job. The rain started to pour as they were leaving the warehouse, wiping away the blood and the sins of the night. Lucas gazed up at the sky, the drops mingling in with his sweat. Though it was difficult, they had long since perfected maneuvering through the darkness.

Furthermore, the impact of their deeds lingered in the quiet as they drove away from the scene, serving as an ongoing reminder that there was no room for mercy or uncertainty within the GoreCorp universe. All they had to worry about were the shadows that perpetually followed them and their never-ending march of duty.
