Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Jared read until the next morning when he heard someone walk along the corridor knocking door to door and calling out for breakfast.

He changed his clothes with the help of his Inventory and put on his shoes. Today he was dressed to better support his Unnoticed skill.

Wearing his grey sneakers, they were a bit older and their soles softer and quieter, his black jeans and a black zip-up hoodie with his grey shirt, and over that a thin knee-length grey wool coat open.

It should look normal enough to not draw any attention and the color scheme should be able to support the redirection effect of Unnoticed with the roads and walls being gray. If only his hair wasn't a light brown and his eyes blue then it would be perfect.

He readied himself and when he heard the knock on his door he pulled it open with speed and a bit too enthusiastic greeting,

" Morning!"

Amanda jumped a foot into the air and yelped. Breathing hard and holding a hand over heart she stuttered" G-o-o-o-d m-orning." and seeing his shit-eating grin scowled," You ass!"

Toning down his grin and looking apologetic he said,

" My apologies miss I just wanted to brighten your morning with a small joke, please, if you forgive I'll be in your debt." put a hand over his heart and bowing slightly.

Seeing his apologies she returned to her happy attitude from yesterday, " OK but you owe me, don't forget it." she said with a grin.

Returning the smile he said," Of course never, and even if it is a bit late, hi my name is Jared may I know yours." and holding my hand out for a fist bump.

She bumped his and said," I'm Amanda and I need to wake up the rest, see you at breakfast?”

"Of course," Jared said still with a smile and gave her a wave while moving down the corridor to the main hall.

When he arrived in the main hall only a few patrons were there already as he got himself a seat at the bar and seeing a new face behind the counter.

Baros Danall Lvl 47

Chef

He looked like a Viking warrior in a chef's uniform also with the signature Danall red hair, and he was staring right at him or through Jared couldn't decide.

"What was that noise up there," he said in a non-nonsense way and a surprisingly soft voice.

" Ah that may have been my fault I played a prank on Amanda and it worked a bit too good," Jared explained," but she has forgiven me, only for that I owe her some kind of life dept now."

The giant man snorted and put a glass of water in front of him and shortly afterward a plate of food. The food was pretty good with bread, butter, eggs, and buttered baby carrots and sweet peas.

Sadly no meat so after he began eating, he asked," Looks delicious but no meat?"

Baros looked at him for a few seconds and then said," We would need to double the room price if the free breakfast had meat." before going back to ignoring him.

The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Not discouraged in the slightest he continued to ask questions," Hey you work in the food industries maybe you can answer my question, I never understood why bread, vegetables, fruits, and so on are so cheap while the meat is so expansive."

Turning his head back to him, now with an expression that told him exactly how much of an idiot he thought he was," Of course meat is more expansive with the nature mages pumping out so much of the vegetarian stuff, it would probably be free if they weren't holding back to not destroy their fertile lands."

With a "Thanks good to know," he went back to his breakfast.

It really was good to know.

The two things he got from that was he should buy bread and other things in bulk for his inventory, when he had some access funds, never know when you are in a situation without food and second, he probably shouldn't look for smuggling opportunities in that area, no money.

Finishing his breakfast and still no Amanda, he decided to get an early start of the day," Thanks for the food and tell Amanda I needed to head out for an appointment, see you tonight champ."

Getting a grunt in return he stood up and left the Inn. He turned left to visit the bookstore Jaques mention yesterday.

Observing the people around him on the way, he needed to recant his thoughts about fashion anarchy or at least when it comes to working clothes. Most of the people moving north were wearing either suit for the men or dresses with muted for the woman, the ones heading west were in sturdier working attire.

After a minute or so he arrived at the bookstore and was relieved to find it open.

With the ringing of the doorbell, he went inside and instantly felt at home. Bookshelf of a dark almost black wood covering every wall from top to bottom and filled with what looked like thousands of books.

He didn't hesitate and went to the counter, where a middle-aged man was reading.

Claus Ratshidt Lvl 41

Librarian

"Hello! One of your finest books please." he exclaimed smiling, furrowing his brows the store owner looked up and said," All our books are fine, but welcome to Clauses Book Emporium the best bookstore within 4 blocks."

Jared stared at him, the whole sentence was spoken in one tone with zero inflection in it," Is there another bookstore better outside the 4 blocks?" Jared asked amused.

"I don't know, I only checked 4 blocks." he droned, and Jared couldn't help himself, he laughed loudly holding his belly.

"I'm sorry, I just thought about something funny." he apologized wiping a tear out of his eye. though It didn't seem to matter as Claus's expression never changed ones.

"I'm looking for a book, that would be good for a newly aspiring merchant," he asked.

" Yes we have one, a moment please."Claus stood up and walked to the back of the store in snail space.

Shaking his head, he settled in for a long wait and thought about what to do next," After this, I need to buy that bag I saw yesterday and find the way to the couriers guild, I just hope they don't have a way to check for classes or....."

And that's when he saw something that took his full attention. A small stack of journals on the counter, they were beautifully warped in black leather, just sitting there.

He didn't know why they drew his attention so much at first. Jared saw similar ones in his old world. Things for people to bring their thoughts and feeling to paper. And he ignored them, never interested himself because he had nothing to write.

But here in this world, and remembering his encounter with the thief, he could write a book.

"No!" He thought tapping his foot," not just A book, an important book, a book of secrets.

Maybe even the most important book in the world."

" That would be 10 shanties," Claus said placing a book on the counter.

Jared shook his head, freeing himself of the moment and tearing his eyes away from the journal. He was just about to pay for the book the shopkeeper brought when his vision focused on the journals again.

Swallowing his saliva he asked," These journals how much is one."

"Huh, oh 5 shanties for one." he droned in his usual tone.

And then he made a decision that changed his whole life, standing in a tiny bookstore, in a small trade town." I'll take one."
