Time out of time

Will followed Nurrim back to the teleport circle, his keen mind observing everything around him and filing it away for later thought. Nurrim entered a different set of coordinates, which Will automatically memorized. When the flare of transport faded, there was nothing outside except a cylinder of force surrounding them which kept in the air and the unexpected sight of an enormous multicolored planet floating in space before them.

Nurrim turned around giving William one of the few serious looks he had ever seen on his uncle’s face. “This is a security precaution. The shell only contains enough air for 10 minutes for us, less for larger folk. Whoever teleports here only has that long to change the coordinates to one specific set and teleport out. No other coordinates will work, all others causing the force shield to open and push you toward the planet below.”

Will stared at his uncle while being extremely careful to memorize the pattern Nurrim was now entering. “Isn’t that a little extreme?”

“No, it isn’t.”

What is that important! “Where to next Uncle?”

“You’ll see.” Suddenly a pattern of magic Will had never seen before surrounded them and when his vision cleared, they were in what looked like a well-appointed room with comfortable chairs and a large table with crystals all around the rim. No other entrance or exit was visible, even to Will’s careful observation as he looked for signs of possible hidden doors.

“There’s no other way out so you can stop looking.” Nurrim commented as he finally seemed to relax and going to a cabinet brought out sandwich fixings. “Grab some food and a chair and I’ll explain.”

Will got a ham and cheese sandwich for himself and settled into a nearby armchair, both excited and apprehensive. “So, what is going on Uncle? Where are we? Why all the secrecy and just how did you figure all this out?”

“As to your first question, we are in a demi-plane between 2 planes of reality which is concealed magically from all divination and only reachable from a few specific teleporters. It’s the safest place I know to think thoughts that might not be looked upon favorably by those in power as well as to experiment with some interesting, but possibly world changing ideas and spells.”

Will took a bite of his sandwich and motioned for Nurrim to continue.

“As for your last question, let me show you.” Will watched Nurrim walk over to the table, place an open scroll containing the Unseen Servant spell upon it and then activate the magic of the table. The table spell looks vaguely like an identify spell, but it’s a lot more complex.

“What is that!” Will shouted in surprise a second later as an image of the Unseen Servant spell appeared above the table viewable not by sight, but magic!

“This is my Superior Spell of Revelation. To a normal mage, the sensor part of the spell,” Nurrim gestured to one of the mana constructs in the spell generated by the table, “would feed information to another part, which in turn would display the information visually to the mage in a manner that he could comprehend. While useful for punching through various concealment spells and the like, it’s true use is only available to people like you and me who can see magic. For us,” He made a gesture, “the revelation spell allows me to zoom in and see the mana construct I am examining in much greater detail.”

Will stared as the mana pattern of the Unseen Servant spell seemed to explode in size revealing the complex 3-dimensional structure Nurrim had shown him in the library. As Will examined it in more detail, he noticed that there were regular instances of mana constructs connecting the layers which had not been shown in Nurrim’s book.

“You deliberately left out part of the Unseen Servant spell when you wrote down the mana constructs, didn’t you?”

“Guilty as charged. That information is not something we want a thief or non-Blur wizard to get ahold of. I may sometimes look reckless to those who don’t really know me, but I intend to take all reasonable safeguards to prevent our Magi-Tech from being abused.”

“What is Magi-Tech?”

“That, my boy, is what you and I are going to create! By understanding how magic truly works on a deeper level, we will be able to create more powerful, simpler, efficient, and flexible spells. All this is to help us drag our world out of its current stagnation and into a future of plenty and promise where the use of magic is no longer an intuitive art limited to the few, but a technology useable by all.”
