Chapter 1: Awakening

Chapter 1: Awakening

*This is the world of Zenmik Where all your dreams can come true. Zenmik is run by the people for the people….. Or once was. Now Zemik is run by the Elitist, and not with money, but with power. 200 years ago, was when it all started. People started getting strange powers that they could enhance with the power of a strange game-like system, but just when people started to talk about this discovery online, the first portal emerged…..*

(Current day)

Chuck awoke from his slumber and rolled over to look at his analog clock seeing that the time was 9:45 AM. Today was the morning of his 18th birthday which meant he had now awoken a class. 200 some odd years ago people over the age of 18 started getting something called a system, in addition to the appearance of portals around the world. The system breaks a human's limits and allows them to go beyond what should be humanly possible, classes were what the system would organize people into once they became 18.

Many people end up with the same type of classes, the most common being the following; Mage, Warrior, Thief, Medic, there are many useless ones like farmer too. Classes that weren't just extensions/sub classes of those classes (for example knight is a better subclass of warrior) were considered unique. Individuals with unique classes were sought out by big guilds and were often destined for greatness. There are many perks to having a class, even if it is a common one. One of many perks being skills. Skills were specific abilities that revolved around some sort of action or supernatural power.

Which was why Chuck was excited to see his status window for the first time, “Status” Chuck said quietly in anticipation he felt like the world owed him, Chuck was orphaned right out of the womb, his mother died giving birth and his father died from illness during his mothers pregnancy. Ever since he has been living off of pity funds from the government.

Just after Chuck said this he heard a robotic voice in his head.

[System booting….}

.

.

[User state your name]

“Chuck!” he Shouted loudly with glee.

[Checking class compatibility….0%...35%...100%}

[Class selection complete]

“Status!” Chuck said, but what happened next decided his fate….

Chuck felt so excited he wanted to scream. that's when one sentence hit him

{Class = Murderer}

Chuck wanted to feel horrified with every fiber of his being, but he just couldn't for some reason it felt only natural that something like this would happen, as he kept reading it was disheartening.

{Class = Murderer: ⅓ EXP from monsters 15x EXP from humans. If someone tries to harm the murderer, the murderer will be prompted with a quest to kill the attacker.

Hunger for murder.}

‘WHAT DO YOU MEAN HUNGER FOR MURDER’ Chuck thought. He felt like he was going insane. He felt like laughing. ‘Lets see i can't level up by hunting monsters efficiently, if someone tries to hurt me i get incentive to kill them, oh and i supposedly have a hunger for killing.’ He thought to himself.

‘Well there must be a good side to this… i need to try and stay positive’ he thought as he opened his investigated his status.

{Name = Chuck}

{Class = Murderer: ⅓ EXP from monsters 15x EXP from humans. If someone tries to harm the murderer, the murderer will be prompted with a quest to kill the attacker.

Hunger for murder.}

{+1 all stats every other human killed - [Humans killed = 0]

{Level 1, EXP 0/50} +2 unassigned stat points upon level up

{Skills}

{Unwavering Will: Murderer will not bat an eye at death, and has some mental resistance.}

Chuck didn't know how to feel on one hand all of his stats were far above average for and newly awakened, his first skill was also a passive which was rare in  itself, not to mention it had mental resistance as one of the effects. Mental resistance is one of the most sought out effects rich people spend millions of Credits to get mental resistant artifacts. As Chuck noticed this he thought ‘maybe this wont be so bad after all… well if he didn't have to be labeled as a murderer.

But for some reason now that he calmed down a little the idea of murder didn't seem that horrible, while realizing this Chuck attributed it to his passive skill.

‘Shit’ Chuck thought. As he just remembered that he was required to get a license at The Awakened Association. The Awakened Association was a branch of the government founded to help deal with the increase of awakened, and acted as a hub for awakened to meet up and delve into portals.

Chuck rushed over to the mirror of his small apartment to get ready , Chuck wasn't necessarily handsome but he wasn't ugly. He was around 5’7” with fair skin, he had brown hair and brown eyes, and he was slim but not skinny. He noticeably grew a small amount of muscle definition after awakening.

Chuck walked out of his apartment in a hurry locking the door behind him ‘i'm going to be late!’ he thought curing inwardly as he got on the bus.

Chuck lived in Lumis City. Lumis city is huge and has multiple Awakened association buildings spread across all the districts, the specific one he was going to was in the tier-3 district. The districts were divided into how much economic value the area held to the city. Most cities have 5 districts, tier-1 being the most wealthy with tier-5 being the least.

The second Chuck got on the bus he immediately knew what the system meant when it said “Hunger for murder” it was hard to explain but he felt the urge to rip everyone in the bus's throats out. It felt as if everyone around him was out to get him even though he knew they weren't. It made him angry like he wanted to fight back and attack before they did.

‘Whats coming over me, i didn't think it would be this bad’ Chuck thought as he swallowed the saliva that was building up faster than normal.

Chuck didn't know if he could hold his urges in before getting to the association. Just as he was thinking this he heard a noise

“Ding” the bus chimed as it came to a stop.

‘This is my stop’ Chuck thought as he quickly sped out of the bus. He realized being in a confined space with that many people was not a good idea, and he had a feeling that if the bus had made him wait any longer, he would have been in some serious trouble

When Chuck stepped off his urges were easier to deal with, ‘maybe it's worse in enclosed areas’ he thought to himself as he made his way to the Tier-3 Association building.

The Awakened Association building was large, it looked like a giant dome with a matte finish. The dome was about double the size of a football stadium. With a bronze statue of a man holding a spear near the entrance that stood about 6 meters tall.

Although the intimidating statue was the least of his worries, the place was flooded with people. Chuck had to dig his nails into his hand to even stand a chance of making it into the building.

Holding back his urges he made it into the building.

When Chuck made it inside there were much less people per square foot, as the space indoors was much larger than the large walkway outside. This made the urges much easier to deal with.

The second thing he noticed aside from the absence of people crowding around him was a very large and long receptionist desk. One long enough to fit the 12 receptionists at the desk.

Chuck got into a short line to see one of the receptionists. Chuck eventually made it to the desk and saw the man who was at it. He was a larger man probably about 6 ft tall and had blonde hair and grey eyes, he was wearing khakis, with a green button down. His name tag said John, and John seemed very excited for Chuck, almost a scary amount. ‘Jeez what's this guy's problem?’ Chuck thought.

John looked Chuck up and down and said with a cheerfully voice “Hi! I've never seen you before. Are you perhaps here to get a license? Or are you renewing one? Or maybe you found someone's wallet, or oh i know you spilled something do you-...” it just trailed on and on

Chuck just wanted John to die on the spot, but he stopped himself from reaching over the counter and ripping his throat out like he imagined 15 times, just in the time John had been yapping. Instead Chuck slightly raised his voice over Johns and said “I'm here to get my license, I turned 18 today and would like to get my assessment done.”

Waiting for a response Chuck was clutching his fist hoping John would trail off again, he didn't want to do anything but ever since his awakening he has also noticed being irrationally irritable.

“Oh! Why didn't you say so. I just need you to sign here and put your hand on this stat orb!”

John said placing an orb on the counter and pulling out a piece of paper that asked for common things like; name, age, address,DOB, etc…

But what stood out to Chuck the most was the stat orb he had heard of them before. A stat orb is a tool used by the association to gauge an Awakend’s total number of stat points. The average was around 40 for people who had just awakened. Putting them in F tier.

An Awakend’s value was determined by their ranking from weakest to strongest the order is

F,E,D,C,B,A,S,SS,SSS, and finally X, there were also half steps. For example (F-) was weaker than (F) and (F+) was stronger than (F) but weaker than (E-).

After filling out the from thoroughly making sure to put his class as warrior ‘i'm not just going to announce to the work that im a possibly a criminal’ he thought.

After setting the paper down John quickly picked it up and started intensely scanning it.

“Hey! Im a warrior too!” john exclaimed. All Chuck could do was awkwardly fake a smile.

John nudged his chair over to the stat orb and said “Well?! Come on aren't you excited to get a rank!”

~

Chuck took one step to his right, and slowly put his hands on the stat orb. After a couple seconds the number 64 hovered in the middle of the orb ‘64 not bad’ Chuck thought.

“Woah! Thats uncommon! You are already at (F+) rank!” John said. But unbeknownst to Chuck John was inwardly thinking ‘thats suspicious most warriors awaken at (F-) or low (F) but this kid is near peak (F+). Did he lie about his Class? No he couldn't have it wouldn't make sense to lie.’

John clasped his hands together and said “Ill get your identification card right away! Just please wait on the bench over there”

John pointed to a about 10 foot long metal bench with what looked like the material used in bus seats as cushioning. On the bench there was a young women probably about Chucks age.

She had olive skin and curly hair in the shape of two pom poms on the top of her head. She was wearing nice leather armor and had a small wand by her side.

Chuck went over a sat as far away from her as he could on the bench.

Chuck used this time to observe his surroundings, the interior of the building was almost like a community center with a large desk at the front leading off into two hallways. One of the hallways had signs with arrows pointing down it saying. Testing area, testing areas were for people who came back for their second assessment once they obtained their class skill. There are unique skills and class skills, a unique skill is the first skill a Awakened gets right after awakening, unique skills are specific to that person. Most unique skills are one of a kind apart from a select few. When an awakened gets to around level 10 they get their first class skill, most people's first class skill varies but they all come from a pool of predetermined skills selected for their class.

Chuck need to either hope his first skill was one both a warrior and murderer had in their skill pools, or make an excuse for not using a skill.

“Chuck!” John called from the counter. Chuck walked over to the counter and was handed an identification card with his name, age, Class(warrior), and the rank (F+) .

“Thank you” Chuck said in a bland tone still worrying about how to deal with his class skill situation.

“You are now permitted to enter (F+) rank dungeons and below, a new field dungeon just opened up called Highland Plains. It is a local dungeon so you don't need to join a guild to get access to it!” John said

After a second he added “OH! I almost for got here is your sign on bonus everyone gets it. Its to help reduce casualties, we recommend you check out the market a couple blocks down.”

John handed Chuck 550 Credits.

and with that Chuck was on his way to the tier-3 district's Lumis City market .
