Ch.3: Guardsmen

Ch.3: Guardsmen

Lyn rushes through the streets passing civilians and others as she makes her way towards a large building towards the middle of town. Running through the doors and rushing into a large empty courtyard where several guardsmen stand around as she approaches breathing heavily as she stops. The group all look towards her as she looks up at them, with a wide grin on her face as she lifts her sword.

“I’m ready for training!”

“Well Lyn’s as excitable as ever.” One of the guards says happily.

“She must really love training.”

“Or more like she’s happy she didn’t get chewed out by the captain for breaking her sword again.”

She looks confused at the group. “Wait, how did you guys know?”

“Well your holding one sword on your back and one in your hands, so we figured something was up. And you just told us that you broke your sword again on your own.” He says confidently looking down on her.

Lyn glares at him and holds the sword up in the air. “So, what I got the sword fixed and I didn’t even use the Guard’s funds to do it. So, what’s the problem with the fact that I broke it!”

“I see, so you did break your sword, again!” A voice yells out walking up behind her.

Turning around the Captain stands with rage in his eyes as he looks down at her. He reaches out for the hilt on her back revealing the stick that it’s attached to as his eyes seem to turn red with rage.

“Captain Noa Ronah!” The guards yell out seriously as they salute.

“So, you tried to trick me, I was suspicious of this thing on your back. What did you do go to a blacksmith and ask them to fix this?” He unsheathes the blade and stares at it. “This is shoddy craftsmanship, at the very least find a competent blacksmith for a repair job.”

He grips the blade and brings the side of it down over his knee shattering the blade into pieces on the ground as he tosses the broken sword to Lyn. She grabs it nervously holding it as she starts to slowly cry.

“Oh, come on!” She yells out annoyed as her efforts crumble in front of her and she falls to the ground. “I worked so hard on that.”

“How about next time you just don’t break your sword and we’ll all be happy.” He walks past her moving towards the other guards. “Alright everyone, let’s begin our training exercises. Pick a partner and then run drills, now!”

“Yes!” They yell out in unison.

Lyn sits on the side of the courtyard watching everyone around her train as she pouts, in annoyance at her failed plan. “Damn it, damn it, damn it.” She whispers while punching the ground.

“Lyn, still upset?” Looking down at her a girl no older than her with long black hair looks down on her with a smile. “Come on Lyn, don’t be so upset, you know how the Captain is.”

“I know it just sucks to always have everything you try crumble away in your face.”

She diverts her eyes. “Tell me about it.”

“You know the feeling Tyra?”

“No, not personally. I just know a few people who could argue about that subject.” She reaches out her hand and pulls Lyn up. “Why don’t we just enjoy ourselves and do a bit of training to get our minds off our frustrations shall we?”

“Working off frustration with exercise, I love that idea.” Lyn says with a wide grin on her face.

Lyn unsheathes her sword and points it towards Tyra as she pulls out a pair of small thin knives from her sides as she stares at Lyn. The pair take their stances and just stare at each other carefully positioning themselves and watching the other trying to find any form of an opening.

With a quick motion Tyra leaps ahead lunging out at Lyn as she takes her knife and aims at Lyn’s arm. As she strikes the blade bounces against Lyn’s blade as Lyn charges ahead knocking Tyra back as she stumbles to catch her footing.

“For someone so simple minded your good at fighting.” Tyra says with a large grin on her face.

Lyn focuses herself and grins. “I’m an Adventurer, I have to be a good fighter.”

The pair stare at one another glaring into each other eyes as they prepare to leap ahead towards one another once again. Tyra jumps ahead aiming for Lyn’s arm once again and as she strikes she notices Lyn move her sword to guard. But with a suddenly twist Tyra takes her blade and then stabs into Lyn’s opposite arm drawing blood as Lyn slashes out cutting into Tyra’s abdomen and drawing some blood of her own.

“You two!” Captain Ronah yells out rushing towards the pair. “I said these were just exercises, not live combat!”

The pair back off with Tyra removing her knife from Lyn’s side, and they just stare at the Captain nervously. He sighs looking at them with an exasperated look as he turns his head and walks off.

“Alright, you two head to the medic and then go on patrol, and don’t get in another fight on your way there.” He says with exhaustion in his voice. “Your both good at fighting that’s obvious, but the two of you need more than just that.”

“Right!” They both yell out seriously.

Lyn and Tyra slightly injured but somewhat joyful take their injured bodies and move towards the building.

Inside Lyn sits on a bed as a nurse holds out her hand gathering injury around the stab wound on her arm as it slowly heals. She leans back as the wound completely closes and the blood stops and Lyn moves her arm around quickly.

“Okay, your good for now.” The nurse says leaning back. “Getting a little too worked up in a fight, that’s a little too much for you youngins.”

“Sorry maim.” Lyn says lowering her head. “It’s just when I get wrapped up in a fight, I just lose myself and then before I know it I’m deep in my own thoughts and fighting my hardest.”

“Battle maniacs, your lot are too much of a pain to deal with for my job. If you love fighting so much why on earth did you become a City Guard?”

Lyn blushes and lowers her head. “I’m an Adventurer, it’s just that I never had a chance to much. And this job gives me free weapons and armor, and that’s what I needed, besides as a side benefit I get to help people so I figured it’d all work out in the end.”

“Is that really it?” She asks concerned. “Are you really satisfied with just his?”

Lyn looks at her and smiles. “Somewhat, I’m going to become a real Adventurer one day, I just need to earn enough money to get my own weapons and armor, and until then I’ll work here!”

She sighs and turns around. “Just do whatever you want see if I car. Just make sure you don’t get yourself hurt and then I need to fix you up again.”

“Right!” Lyn yells out excitedly.

Lyn jumps from the examination bed and stands on the floor with a wide grin across her face. She walks into the halls of the building and grins happily before coming across Tyra leaving another nurse’s office.

“Your healed nicely.” Tyra says with a wide grin. “I thought there would be even a little muscle damage.”

Lyn swings her arm around. “Works fine, the nurse healed me up completely.”

“Alright.” She walks up to her and put’s her hand on her shoulder. “So how was that cave I told you about?”

“There was a monster inside, me and Rayne had to run away from the darned thing as it chased us.” Lyn says thinking of the other day’s events. “It was really scary, but we made it through and we’ll work hard to get in there another day. Maybe we should take on something less challenging first.”

Tyra smiles maliciously. “Well if you don’t mind having the treasure stolen out from under your nose, then I guess it’s fine.”

“Treasure?”

“Yeah I heard one of the Adventurers in town. Apparently, there’s some major treasure deep inside, and now everyone’s after it.” She whispers into Lyn’s ear. “With a treasure like that then you could ultimately become the Adventurer you’ve always dreamed you could be.”

“Really? Wait how do you know about this? And why would some Adventurer’s be talking about such things out in the open?”

She smiles and looks away. “I went out drinking with them and they spilled their guts no problem.”

“Okay if you’re sure that there’s some treasure.”

“Oh yes, and that Monere is proof. It’s there to guard the treasure, but if your quick and lucky then you can take is for your own.” She smiles looking into her eyes. “And then you can make all of your dreams come true.”

Tyra let’s go of Lyn and walks off. “Of course, whatever you do is ultimately your choice. But can you afford to wait any longer?”

Lyn stands there shaking her fist in impotent rage before looking ahead with a look of determination in her eyes. “Tomorrow I’ll find Rayne and then the two of us will go become masters of that cave.”
