16. The Hunt

Alice led them down the streets cutting through alleyways and around shops. The group moved swiftly and silently through the darkened streets of the city. The only sound accompanying their footsteps was the low hum of the aura-sensing device in Elias's hand. They passed shops that were closing for the night. Their path forced them to cut through several parts of the city. The crystal continued to lead them onward. The device had no in-built proximity meter so they could only follow and guess where it would lead them and for how long.

Alice kept a tight grip on her sword, her senses heightened for any sign of danger. The soldiers, too, had their weapons at the ready, their trained eyes scanning the surroundings for any lurking threats. As they continued to follow the trail, Elias occasionally adjusted the orientation of the crystal orb, ensuring that they stayed on the right path. The aura-sensing device led them through narrow alleys and desolate streets, taking them deeper into the heart of the city.

After what felt like an eternity, the aura-sensing device led them to a large, tall building that crowded between other buildings. The darkness around the crystal now was almost suffocating, and the aura sensor pulsed with an ominous intensity. Their destination was one of the cleaner buildings on its row. The street around it was swept clean. Elias moved around the side of the building double checking the crystal along the way.

"We've found their hideout," Elias whispered, his voice barely audible. "This is where the darkness is strongest."

Alice nodded; her determination unwavering. She turned to the guards and spoke in hushed tones, "Stay alert. We don't know what we're going to face inside. We need to be prepared for anything. We won't let them escape.” With weapons drawn and hearts filled with resolve, they cautiously approached the entrance.

Alice pushed on the door. It started to creak open. Then it burst outward breaking the hinges on the door and throwing Alice back. The soldiers waiting on either side were the first to react to the monstrous wolf that barreled out the door. As she stumbled up to her feet the soldiers were on top of the corrupted wolf. They slashed and stabbed at the creature and other soldiers blocked the wolf’s jaws with their shields.

“It must have smelled out approach,” said Elias. “We need to create a perimeter so that they can’t escape through any back entrance. I’m going in. Alice, Thompson, with me.” He passed the crystal to the nearest soldier before drawing his sword.

The wolf was thrashing as it started to bleed out from the various wounds. He thrust his sword through its chest and the beast stopped moving. Alice moved to enter first and ran through the doorway.

The cultists' hideout was a labyrinth of narrow corridors and chambers, each more foreboding than the last. Flickering torches cast long, wavering shadows on the rough stone walls, creating an unsettling dance of light and darkness.

Suddenly, a group of cultists emerged from the shadows, their hoods obscuring their faces, and their eyes gleaming with fanatical fervor. Without hesitation, Alice engaged them, her fighting style a whirlwind of efficiency and raw power. Her movements were fluid yet merciless, as she disarmed, incapacitated, or dispatched each cultist that dared to challenge her.

Elias and Thompson followed closely behind, their combat skills matching Alice's intensity. Elias' sword flashed with precision as he engaged the cultists, while Thompson, armed with a crossbow, expertly picked off those who attempted to flee. Panic crept into their eyes as they realized that their sanctuary was being breached.

The clash of steel against steel, the thud of claws meeting swords, and the cries of the cultists echoed through the dark corridors. Alice's determination remained unwavering, her every strike calculated. Soldiers flooded the other rooms and areas of the building. They provided support and began searching other areas of the building for people and information. Anything they could use to figure out the plans of the cultists was seized. As the battle raged on, the soldiers outside secured the perimeter, ensuring that none of the cultists could escape.

Alice was quick to dispatch her enemies. Thompson often pinned them down with a well-placed arrow before she killed them. She motioned for Elias and Thompson to follow her as she ventured further into the labyrinthine corridors.

As they ascended deeper into the cultists' lair, the atmosphere grew increasingly eerie. The torchlight seemed to dim, and the air became colder and heavy with an oppressive energy. The walls of the narrow passages were adorned with grotesque symbols and paintings of nightmarish creatures, serving as a grim testament to the cultists' sinister practices.

Finally, they arrived at a colossal chamber, its entrance shrouded in a chilling mist. The room was vast, and at its center stood an altar adorned with gruesome trophies - bones, skulls, and other macabre relics. Upon the altar rested a peculiar, pulsating crystal, radiating an ominous, crimson glow.

Alice approached the crystal, her curiosity overriding her caution. “Do not touch it,” said a new voice in the room.

She reached out to touch it, and as her fingers brushed its surface, a flood of nightmarish visions assaulted her mind. She saw images of the cultists performing dark rituals, unleashing horrors upon the world, and plotting to summon an ancient and malevolent entity.

With a shudder, she withdrew her hand from the crystal and turned to her companions. The ritualistic item crumbled to dust. "This is it," she said, her voice tense with urgency. "This is what they've been using to corrupt the artifacts and weapons."

The cult's leader, a sinister figure robbed in dark attire, stepped out of the shadows. His eyes were filled with desperation as he beheld Alice, Elias, and Thompson standing before the fallen crystal. He looked at Alice and then back to the destroyed crystal. “What have you done? It is gone. The crystal should not be destroyed by your touch. You have doomed me.”

Elias watched the man carefully. Already the man’s eyes were growing darker and his skin paler. “Kill me now before I die an even worse death. I…”

Before the cult leader could utter another word, her blade descended, silencing him forever. The chamber grew ominously silent as the cult leader's lifeless body crumpled to the ground.

“We could have asked him more questions,” said Elias. “He was eager to speak.”

“It doesn’t matter. He was dying soon to the overrun of corruption in his body. We have the information we need from the stuff in the building. His followers will be able to tell us everything else we can’t find out.”

“Unless they are already dead,” said Thompson.

“I’m ready to head back,” said Alice. “The soldiers can deal with the rest here. We have played our part. I need to get ready for our trip tomorrow. I’ve you’ve got anything else to finish in the city then try to have it done by the morning light.”

With that, Alice sheathed her sword and left the room leaving Thompson and Elias alone. Soldiers entered the room looking around at the different items. Elias followed their gaze to the body, items, and crystals that were now dust on the floor.

“She is probably right, you know. Let the others take care of this cleanup,” said Thompson.

Thompson nodded; his gaze still fixed on the remnants of the shattered crystal. "Yeah, you're right," he finally replied, his voice heavy with exhaustion.

Together they left the large room and walked down the stairs. They weren’t bothered by the soldiers. The bodies were starting to be moved and the signs of the fight were removed. Elias pushed passed a soldier guarding the front door and blocking passersby from looking in. As they stepped out they saw that people were already starting to whisper and discuss what little they had learned. The raid on the building and the appearance of the king’s guard and hero had not gone unnoticed. Despite the soldiers blocking the road, some of the commotion had cut through the quiet night.

“Back to the castle then?” asked Elias.

Thompson nodded in agreement. "Yes, back to the castle. We need to report to the king about what we've discovered here. He'll want to know the details of the cult's operation and what we've learned from the items in that chamber."
