Mission 006

#1

The tension was thick as the Kai stared in disbelief at the scene unfolding before him.

Kai's voice broke the silence, a hint of surprise coloring his tone. "What the hell is happening here?"

Blake clung to Lucas’s back, arms wrapped tightly around his neck and hands covering Lucas’s eyes like an impromptu blindfold. Lucas, the feared and unpredictable fighter, was flailing like a bull trying to shake off a pesky rider. Blake laughed breathlessly, his voice teasing as he held on for dear life. “Bleh! That’s what you get for underestimating me, you psycho!”

"Is Lucas actually struggling against this kid?" Kai muttered in disbelief, his eyes darting between the two fighters. "I can't tell if he's playing around or if he's actually being serious..."

From the onset of the challenge, it was apparent that Blake had a few tricks up his sleeve. He seemed to have studied Lucas's fighting style, anticipating his moves as if he had witnessed them before. Without hesitation, Blake played dirty, resorting to tactics that Lucas wouldn't have even considered.

Blake hurled stones, flung sand, and kicked up dust, aiming to disorient and enrage Lucas. He was strategically using Lucas's fiery temper against him, and it appeared to be working.

Lucas's eyes blazed with fury as he searched for the pesky challenger. "Where are you, you little pest?!" he roared, his voice laced with venom. He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white as his anger reached a boiling point.

His gaze finally locked onto Blake, and his lips curled into a snarl. "You sneaky little brat! I swear, I'll make you regret the day you crossed me!" He took a menacing step forward, his eyes never leaving his target. "I'll tear you to shreds until you beg for mercy!"

Kai's eyes widened as he realized that Blake had managed to cross the line. He quickly sprinted towards Lucas, who was still seething with anger, and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "Lucas, hold on!" Kai exclaimed, his voice filled with urgency.

Lucas didn't respond immediately, his gaze locked on Blake, who was grinning triumphantly. Slowly, Lucas turned his attention to the line in the dirt. He chuckled darkly as the reality of the situation sank in. "He won..." Lucas muttered, his voice dripping with a twisted sense of amusement. "And I lost."

Kai frowned, a shiver running down his spine. He knew that Lucas was not accustomed to defeat, having lost to only three people in the past. But it wasn't the loss that concerned Kai – it was the unnerving excitement in Lucas's eyes.

"Lucas," Kai began cautiously, "It wasn't a one-on-one battle. You would have crushed him if it were. Don't take it too hard on yourself."

Blake narrowed his eyes, his smirk turning into a scowl as he crossed his arms over his chest. "You're still underestimating me, aren't you?" he challenged, his voice dripping with defiance. "Don't be surprised if I turn out to be the final boss later on," he added, his smile turning mischievous.

As Kai's words seemed to fall on deaf ears, Lucas exhaled deeply, his grin widening. "Why not go for a full bloodbath battle next, Blake?" he proposed, his voice laced with a sinister edge.

Kai couldn't help but shudder at Lucas's unsettling enthusiasm for violence. He knew that Lucas was a skilled fighter, but his psychopathic tendencies made him dangerously unpredictable.

Blake rolled his eyes and shrugged nonchalantly. "Nope, only a psycho would accept your clause,"

"Since you won," Kai acknowledged, his tone a blend of surprise and admiration, "we'll accept your deal and any other conditions you may have."

Blake's smile widened as he relished his victory. "I guess we have a proper deal now," he replied, his voice brimming with confidence.

Kai rolled his shoulders and adjusted his weapon, his gaze sweeping over the group with an air of calm urgency. “Alright, let’s get moving. We’re on borrowed time here, and every second counts,” he said, his voice firm as he gestured for everyone to fall in line.

Blake's thoughts drifted as he realized he was finally going on a real mission. Throughout his time with the Black Mamba team, he had been stuck with menial tasks like stealing and surveillance. His emotions were a whirlwind – anxiety, happiness, and a sense of validation all rolled into one.

“This is it”, Blake thought, his heart pounding. “Finally, a real mission”. His anxiety dissipated as he imagined facing off against formidable adversaries. “No more petty theft or lurking in the shadows. Now, I can test my true strength against real enemies.”

"Hey, Blake! Can you hear me?" Lucas asked, waving a hand in front of Blake's face. “Hmm, I think he means yes”.

Cyrus noticed Kai and Lucas approaching. Kai walked with a relaxed but determined pace, while Lucas seemed full of energy, eager for the fun to start. Kai waved them over, his arm moving smoothly through the air, and nodded calmly as Blake jogged up to him.

“Finally! You took your time,” Cyrus said from the driver’s seat, grinning and tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. Axel was already in the passenger seat, leaning back with his eyes half-closed, as if it were just another casual drive.

“Let’s get going, shall we?” Kai said, opening the back door with a playful look at Lucas, who jumped into the car. Blake slid in beside him, still buzzing with excitement, his hands drumming on his knees as the engine roared to life.

As they drove off, Cyrus glanced at the trio in the rearview mirror. “Try to keep up with that energy, okay?”

As the car cruised down the dusty road, Cyrus leaned his elbow casually out the window, casting a sidelong glance at Blake with an incredulous grin. "So, how is it that he's still breathing?" Cyrus drawled, eyes gleaming with mock curiosity. "Don’t tell me you changed the challenge last minute to a rock-paper-scissors game, and he won?”

He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, chuckling as he continued, "Seriously, though, I half-expected to find you two scraping him off the floor." He glanced back in the mirror with an exaggerated shrug, his grin widening as if the whole thing was some great cosmic joke. "Or did he pull a rabbit out of his hat while I wasn’t looking?"

Kai leaned back, a wry smile tugging at his lips as he watched Blake with a mixture of pride and amusement. “Yeah, he actually managed to pull through,” he said, scratching his jaw thoughtfully. “Even I was surprised. Not only did he cross the line, but he’s got a surprising amount of fight in him.” He gave a nod in Blake's direction, adding, “He just needs to work on his footing a bit.”

As he spoke, Blake was half-listening, his focus already bouncing between his own thoughts and Lucas, who leaned in close with a gleam in his eye. “Next time,” Lucas said, voice dripping with mock menace, “I promise you wont be that lucky, and I will make sure I get a taste of your blood.”

Axel, who’d been sitting quietly with his arms crossed, finally spoke up, his voice low and tinged with a hint of irritation. “Could you stop talking about blood, Leo?” he muttered, his gaze fixed on the window as if to avoid everyone else’s eyes. “Some of us are already dealing with enough… nightmares.”

He shifted in his seat, folding his arms tighter and hunching just slightly, making it clear he had no intention of discussing the subject further.

Cyrus glanced at the rearview mirror, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as he took in the scene behind him. While expertly guiding the wheel with one hand, he leaned back just enough to give a sidelong look toward Kai. “So,” he drawled, “he actually managed to get through the challenge. I have to admit, I’m… a bit surprised.”

His fingers tapped thoughtfully on the steering wheel as he continued, “Do you really think he’ll make a great replacement? We’ve been searching for a while, but what do we tell the master if he asks why we picked him?” Cyrus’s gaze flicked back to the mirror, catching Blake and Lucas squabbling in the back.

Kai exhaled, a long, drawn-out sigh as he leaned back, closing one eye thoughtfully while watching Blake in the back seat. His gaze was distant but calculating, “It depends, honestly,” he murmured, his voice laced with a touch of skepticism. “If he actually pulls through the raid, then maybe we’ll have a good excuse to give the master.”

He rolled his shoulders, letting his head tilt slightly to the side, one eye still half-open as he observed Blake wrestling Lucas’ persistent taunts. A faint smirk crept onto Kai’s face as he added, “He’s got potential, I’ll give him that. But… the raid will show us if we can keep him or not.”

After hours on the road, the vehicle rolled to a gradual stop, dust rising in lazy spirals around them as the engine idled. Cyrus leaned forward from the driver’s seat, one eyebrow raised, his usual calm demeanor tinged with curiosity as he observed Blake.

“Mind explaining why we’re stopping here, Blake?” His fingers tapped the steering wheel rhythmically, a slight twitch of anticipation in his posture, as though he was prepared for just about anything but still wanted answers.

Blake folded his arms, leaning against the door with a thoughtful expression. "Simple," he replied. "You can't exactly roll this big black van straight into the enemy’s den without drawing attention. The place is wired with mines. Bringing a vehicle in there… well, that's just asking for trouble."

As he spoke, memories of his past flashed through his mind—the mines, the explosion that claimed his parents' lives.

Kai hopped out of the van, an air of determination surrounding him. "Looks like we're going on foot from here," he announced, adjusting his gear.

Meanwhile, Lucas meticulously prepared the weapons, a menace expression on his face. The team worked in sync, double-checking their equipment and ensuring they were fully prepared for the impending mission.

# 2

Kai and the rest of the team expertly equipped themselves with their preferred weapons, each member selecting the tools that best suited their individual skills.

Once everyone was geared up, Kai turned to Blake, a serious expression on his face. "Blake, you'll be staying with Axel in the van," he instructed. "You two will handle operations from the outside. I don't want you joining us in the main combat."

Kai laid out the plan: "Cyrus, you'll cover our backs. Lucas, you and I will lead the charge and raid the base."

Cyrus nodded in agreement, while Lucas gave a chilling smile that sent shivers down the team's spines. His intense gaze and the way he eagerly prepared his weapons hinted at his twisted excitement for the fight that was about to unfold.

The team braced themselves, aware that Lucas's unpredictable and dangerous nature made him a wild card in any operation. They knew that while he was a skilled fighter, his actions were difficult to predict, making their mission even more challenging. Despite the risks, the team remained focused, determined to carry out their mission and emerge victorious.

Blake's excitement deflated as he realized he wouldn't be participating in the main combat. His shoulders sagged, and he let out a heavy sigh, his disappointment evident in his downcast expression.

Just when I thought I'd finally get to engage in an actual battle, Blake thought bitterly, frustration gnawing at him.

As Kai gave a silent hand signal to initiate their plan, Blake could only watch from the sidelines, a storm of conflicting emotions raging within him. Despite his eagerness to prove himself in battle, he knew he had to follow orders and support the team from the outside. Gritting his teeth, he set about preparing for his support role, determined to contribute as much as possible to the mission's success.

Axel, his voice heavy with gloom, instructed Blake, "Get in the van."

Blake, eager for information, asked, "What exactly will we be doing in the van, anyway?"

Axel, not one for idle chatter, replied tersely, "Just observe," as he climbed into the van, his body language closed off and uninviting.

Blake followed behind, a sinking feeling in his chest. This is going to be a long, boring assignment with him, he thought, resigning himself to the uninviting atmosphere inside the van. As he took his seat, he couldn't help but wish he were in the thick of the action with the rest of the team instead.

Axel and Blake took their seats, and Axel pressed a button, revealing a hidden, high-tech room within the van. Blake's eyes widened in surprise as he observed the array of advanced tools and technology, never expecting such an impressive setup inside the seemingly ordinary vehicle.

"Is this really the van?" Blake asked, his voice tinged with amazement. Axel glanced at Blake, offering a brief acknowledgment before turning his attention back to the equipment, remaining silent.

Blake, still in awe of their surroundings, didn't notice Axel's dismissive reaction. His excitement momentarily overshadowed Axel's gloom as he began to realize that their role in the mission might not be as boring as he had initially thought.

Axel settled into his seat in the advanced room and donned his headphones. "Can you hear me?" he asked, adjusting the microphone.

The speaker crackled to life. "Affirmative," came Kai's voice, clear and focused.

"Dispatching Drones 1 and 2 for enemy zone surveillance. Stand by for further updates," Kai informed the team.

Cyrus, his voice steady, responded, "Roger that. Awaiting your intel."

Blake observed the proceedings with keen interest, absorbing every detail. So this is how communication works during a mission, he mused, his admiration for the team's coordination growing by the second.

Axel, meanwhile, focused on his task, expertly dispatching the drones and booting up the PC to access the drone camera feeds. As the screens flickered to life, revealing the enemy zone, Axel couldn't help but be impressed by the security measures. "Tch, they've got this place locked down tight," he commented under his breath.

Blake, a thoughtful expression on his face, offered, "There's an easier way to get in." Axel, casting a skeptical glance in his direction, maintained his gloomy demeanor.

"Besides," Blake continued, "putting your drone that high is only going to attract attention." As if on cue, the screen displaying Drone 1's feed flickered, and the connection was lost.

Axel, still refusing to show anger, simply appeared more downtrodden as he grumbled, "Couldn't you have said something earlier?" His gloomy and somewhat lazy disposition only grew more pronounced.

Blake, eager to defend himself, retorted, "Hey, don't blame me! You could have at least asked for information since I know this place better than you."

Axel turned away, donning his headphones once more. "Drone 1 has been destroyed," he reported, his tone professional despite the setback. "The enemy may have caught on that there's an intruder."

Kai, a slight furrow in his brow, responded, "That's not good. Have you found any other way to infiltrate with less security?"

Axel, unfazed, continued to work with a renewed sense of determination. "Negative, but I'm still working on it," he answered confidently.

Axel, his expression neutral, removed the headphones and asked Blake, "You said there's an easier way in. Care to share your plan?" His voice was level, but his gaze betrayed a hint of curiosity as he awaited Blake's explanation.

After carefully analyzing the remaining drone footage, Blake observed a vulnerability in the enemy's security system—an old, disused tunnel that connected to the underground levels of the base. The entrance was partially concealed by overgrown vegetation, suggesting that the tunnel had been long forgotten.

Blake cleared his throat, addressing the team with newfound confidence. "I've found a potential entry point through an abandoned tunnel," he explained. "It's hidden from the main security cameras and may have been overlooked by the enemy."

Axel, impressed by Blake's swift analysis, noted internally that he had discovered the weakness quickly. He promptly put his headphones back on to relay the information to the rest of the team.

As the team received the update, they were one step closer to successfully completing their mission.

Kai and Lucas, their expressions stony and resolute, set out towards the abandoned tunnel, while Cyrus veered off to secure a strategic sniping position. With a steady hand and a keen eye, Cyrus swiftly ascended to a vantage point that would provide him with a clear line of sight, should his teammates require backup.

Kai and Lucas, with steely resolve in their eyes, nodded at one another before making their way towards the abandoned tunnel. Kai led the way, moving with a fluid grace that belied his dangerous capabilities. Lucas followed close behind, his movements precise and calculated, a chilling intensity radiating from his very being.

The night air was thick with tension as they navigated the overgrown terrain, their senses on high alert for any signs of danger. The moon cast ominous shadows around them, but they pressed onward, undeterred.

As they reached the tunnel entrance, Lucas's lips curled into a sinister smirk, his excitement for the impending chaos barely concealed. Kai, his expression stern, gave a silent signal, and they slipped into the darkness.

Inside the tunnel, the damp, musty scent of disuse assaulted their nostrils. Ancient cobwebs clung to the low ceiling, while the sound of dripping water echoed through the confined space. Their footsteps were muffled against the cold, stone floor, creating an eerie symphony of hushed movements and anticipation.

Kai and Lucas continued to push forward, the beam of their flashlights slicing through the darkness. They knew they were entering the belly of the beast, but their determination never wavered.

#3

Kai and Lucas, with silent precision, successfully breached the enemy's lair. Their entrance was a testament to their skill and years of training, every movement calculated to ensure the element of surprise.

Kai and Lucas slipped into the enemy’s den, weaving through the shadows in complete silence. The air was heavy with tension, and Kai kept his dual pistols at the ready, his fingers resting lightly on the triggers as he assessed the darkened corridors. He moved with precision, each step fluid yet silent, like a ghost.

Lucas, on the other hand, kept his assault rifle close, his grip firm and his eyes flashing with a savage excitement. His movements were purposeful, but rougher, letting his heavy boots crunch faintly against the gritty floor as he moved forward. His gaze darted from corner to corner, searching for any sign of trouble. The faintest flicker of a shadow up ahead was all he needed; Lucas whipped his rifle around, a smirk pulling at his lips as he tightened his grip. “Showtime.”

With his first target locked, he let out a sharp breath, unleashing a calculated but brutal series of shots that echoed down the hall. In perfect tandem, Kai leapt forward, his dual pistols firing in swift, precise bursts. As an enemy rushed him from the side, Kai ducked low, sliding under the assailant’s reach and sweeping his legs out from under him. With a swift motion, Kai jammed one pistol under the enemy's chin and fired.

Meanwhile, perched far from the fray, Cyrus settled in his hidden vantage point, the barrel of his sniper rifle barely visible as he surveyed the scene through his scope. His trained eye caught the flicker of movement near a set of windows on the second floor, a sentry peering out in the direction of Kai and Lucas. “You’re not going to make it,” Cyrus murmured to himself, his finger curling over the trigger. His heart beat slow and steady, each second precisely calculated.

The distant echo of footsteps alerted Cyrus to another guard’s approach, moving to alert the base of the breach. He adjusted his scope just a fraction, his breathing measured. A single shot rang out, punctuating the night with deadly finality as the sentry crumpled to the ground without so much as a sound.

As Lucas, Kai, and Cyrus fought valiantly against the enemy forces, Axel maintained his focus on deploying additional drones to scout the area for their objective. His fingers danced across the controls with practiced ease, sending the drones into the heart of the enemy base.

Blake, unable to contain his curiosity, asked Axel, "What's the main reason you guys are raiding this base?" His enthusiasm for the mission was evident, even as Axel continued his work in silence.

Frustrated by Axel's unresponsive demeanor, Blake pressed on, "Can't you at least be friendly?" His irritation was clear, the boredom of their current situation wearing on his nerves.

Unexpectedly, Axel dropped his headphones and turned to Blake, his face unusually serious. The sudden change in Axel's demeanor caught Blake off guard, his frustration momentarily replaced by a sense of unease.

Axel's words hung heavy in the air, laden with resentment and disdain. "Don't get any funny ideas here," he warned, his tone cold and unwavering. "Even if the other members of the team don't mind you joining us, that doesn't mean I feel the same. You're just not a worthy replacement." With that, Axel returned his headphones to his ears, resuming his surveillance with a renewed sense of determination.

Blake, momentarily stunned by Axel's admission, took a moment to process the hostility. It's always normal for someone not to like you, he reminded himself, shrugging off the tension. It's not the first time I've experienced it anyway. With a forced nonchalance, he left the tech room and made his way to the long chair in the main part of the van.

As he settled into the seat, Blake couldn't help but feel a sense of isolation. The discomfort of Axel's animosity weighed heavily on him, but he refused to let it dampen his spirit. Instead, he turned his focus to the mission at hand, determined to prove his worth to the team and make a difference in their pursuit of justice.
