Ark 1 : Dragon Age - Chapter 8.5

We made camp in the abandoned thaig. We used the crumbling ancient buildings as makeshift walls. Our job was to make the campsite defendable, the rest of the dwarven contingents would arrive shortly. The second through fourth dwarven contingents had the heavier armaments, one of those where mobile walls. It was a heavy metal structure that they could expand into a wall a few dozen feet long. They also had platforms that could be raised where ballista's and other similar heavy weaponry would be placed. I was a bit confused as how they operated as a whole, Thorik explained to me that small groups would be sent to scout ahead. Their task was to find a campsite within a day's travel that was reinforcable. The dwarven army would remain in that spot untill the scout groups found another such position a days travel further towards their goal.

The scout groups had been made, Korma, Kormik and Thorik were one of these scout groups. Together with Kardol and another dwarf called Dromgar. They would leave tomorrow morning and head deeper down the roads. Naturally I had to ask, I tapped Kardol on the shoulder and grinned.

“So can I come?”

The dwarves stared at me like I was insane, which to be honest in all likelyhood I probably was. Kardol sighed as he gave me a one over, “You do understand this is a job that was assigned to us, none of us volunteered. Scouting is the most dangerous job by far in the roads. We could get ambushed by deep-stalkers.”

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

“Or eaten alive by spiders!” Korma helpfully added.

Thorik was next, “Become a chewtoy for an ogre!”

“Maybe even become dragon bbq!” Korma enthusastically continued.

“Or get eaten by cretahl.” Kormik added shaking his head ruefully.

I grinned at the bunch of them, “Exactly! Sounds fun, besides what would I do here without you, my brand new conversational partners.” I made an exaggerated bow.

Korma guffawed, “well you would NOT DIE, for one.”

I smiled to her answer, “I did come down here to die however, I'd rather do that taking a risk with new friends than staying in camp, baking nugs.”

Kardol sighed then chuckled, “Sure human, you can come with us. But remember that you must liten to my orders once we are in the roads or you could get all of us killed.”

I nodded seriously, “I will follow orders, maybe except if you ask me to get eaten by spiders. That part did not sound fun at all.” I shivered a bit, I hated spiders. Giant spiders? Those were waaaaay worse.

It seemed i had my work cut out for me tomorrow. The scouts gestured and headed to bed, we would not wait for the other groups to join us. The scouts went to bed earlier as they had to wake up at the break of dawn and get to work. I for one was just happy to not be in these roads alone, I wondered what Eve was doing. Did she get herself eaten yet? I doubt she had found herself a friendly group like i had. Then again she did have invisiblity so she should be relatively safe.

I drifted off to sleep, laying on my back on a fur matt i had borrowed from Thorik. My helmet with egg sitting snugly on my stomache.
