Chapter 10: Confinement

Chapter 10: Confinement

Rebecca's heart raced as she stared down the barrel of the gun pointed at her by the man she thought was Hiro's father. Her mind raced, trying to come up with a way out of the situation. She knew this man was not who he claimed to be, but she couldn't let on that she knew.

Slowly, she raised her hands in a gesture of surrender and held out the USB drive. "Here," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "You can have it."

The man snatched the USB from her outstretched hand and turned to leave. Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief and started to back away, but suddenly the man spun around, pointing the gun at her once again.

"Don't think you're getting away that easily," he growled. "You know too much."

Rebecca's mind raced as she tried to think of a way out. She looked around frantically, searching for anything she could use to defend herself. As she did, she noticed a small lamp on the table next to her.

In one swift motion, Rebecca grabbed the lamp and swung it at the man's head. The impact sent him stumbling backwards, giving Rebecca just enough time to make a run for the door.

She sprinted down the hallway, her heart pounding in her chest. As she reached the stairwell, she heard the man's footsteps pounding after her. She knew she couldn't outrun him forever, so she took a chance and turned to face him.

The man was just a few feet away now, his gun raised and ready to fire. But as he pulled the trigger, Rebecca leapt to the side, narrowly avoiding the bullet.

In the split second that followed, Rebecca acted on instinct. She lunged forward, grabbing the man's arm and twisting it behind his back while grabbing the usb drive from his hand. With all her strength, she pushed him down the stairs, watching as he tumbled head over heels to the bottom.

Breathless and shaking, Rebecca stumbled out of the building and collapsed on the sidewalk.

As she walked away, clutching the USB drive tightly in her hand, Rebecca couldn't help but wonder who this man was and what he wanted with Hiro's disappearance. She knew she had to find out, no matter the cost.

As Rebecca had her head down and her thoughts consumed by the video she had just watched, she was so lost in her own world that she barely registered the sound of an engine revving behind her.

Suddenly, a car screeched to a halt beside her, and several men in dark suits jumped out. Before she could even react, one of them struck her on the head with a blunt object, and everything went black.

When Rebecca came to, she was lying in the back of the car, her hands and feet bound with duct tape. The men in suits were sitting in the front seats, speaking in hushed tones. She tried to scream, but her mouth was also bound shut.

As the car drove on, Rebecca's mind raced. Who were these people? What did they want with her? Was this connected to Hiro's disappearance?

The car eventually came to a stop, and the men got out, dragging Rebecca along with them. They led her into a dark, dingy warehouse, and pushed her into a completely dark, small, and windowless room. Rebecca was then knocked unconscious.

---

After an unknown amount of time has passed, Rebecca slowly opened her eyes, her head aching from the blow she received. She tried to move her hands but found them tied to a chair. Looking around, she saw that she was in a dimly lit room, and there were two figures in front of her.

"Rebecca, are you okay?" A voice whispered from the shadows.

It was Hiro's voice. Rebecca's heart raced as she tried to look for him, but she couldn't see his face clearly.

"Hiro, where are you?" Rebecca asked, her voice shaky.

"I'm here, right in front of you. Don't worry, I'm okay." Hiro replied.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Rebecca saw Hiro.

"What happened to you?" Rebecca asked, her eyes full of concern.

"It doesn't matter. What matters is that we're together now," Hiro replied, smiling weakly.

As Hiro came closer to her, Rebecca saw the figure of a man sitting next to him.

"Rebecca, this is my father," Hiro said, gesturing towards the man.

Rebecca looked at the man and saw that he was tied to his chair, just like she was. His face was also bruised, and he had a black eye.

"Hiro, what's going on?" Rebecca asked, feeling scared and confused.

Hiro took a deep breath and began to explain what had happened to Rebecca. "One day in Nexus, I was just wandering around when I overheard two guys talking about laundering money through the marketplace. I followed them and recorded the conversation on my USB drive. But then they realized they were being followed and entered a rift. I tried to follow them, but then my account automatically closed. I thought I was just disconnected, but I couldn't log back in."

Rebecca's eyes widened with shock. "So that's why you disappeared?"

Hiro took a deep breath and continued to explain to Rebecca what had happened.

"I knew I had to get the evidence to the police, but I also knew it was risky to carry it on me. So I made a copy of the video and hid it on the back of a picture frame. I took the original USB and headed to the police station. But on the way, I was captured."

Rebecca shook her head, struggling to understand. "But why would they take your father too?" she asked, looking over at his father.

Hiro looked over at his father, a pained expression on his face. "He came to visit me in my apartment, and that's when they found him. They were searching the apartment for any evidence of their money laundering system, and they must have thought he knew something. So they took him too."

Rebecca then ask Hiro. "Who would you think might be that did all this?"

"I don't know for sure," he replied, "but I suspect it's someone with a lot of power and influence. They wouldn't want this kind of information to get out. But I think this is not important right now. What is important is how can we get out of here safely…"

Rebecca's heart was racing as she struggled against the ropes that bound her to the chair. She couldn't believe how she had let herself get into this situation. She needed to think of a way out, and fast.

She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. "Okay, Rebecca, you can do this," she whispered to herself. "Think, think, think..."

She surveyed her surroundings, taking in every detail of the dimly lit room. Her eyes darted around, trying to find something that could help her escape. But all she could see were a few crates stacked against the wall and a door that seemed to be made of solid metal.

As she wriggled in her chair, she noticed that the ropes weren't tied very tightly. She took this as a small glimmer of hope and began to wiggle her arms and legs, trying to loosen the knots.

After a few moments of struggling, she felt one of the ropes give way. A surge of excitement rushed through her as she realized that she was making progress. She continued to wiggle and squirm until both her arms and legs were free.

She quickly untied the remaining ropes and stood up, her heart still pounding.

Rebecca looked at the ropes that bound Hiro and his father to their chairs. She knew that time was of the essence and she had to act quickly if they were to have any chance of escaping.

Taking a deep breath, Rebecca began to work on untying the ropes that bound Hiro's father. The knots were tight, but she had learned a few tricks over the years, and she was able to loosen them. With each tug of the rope, Hiro's father began to regain his freedom.

Rebecca moved on to Hiro next, her hands shaking with nerves. She had never been in a situation like this before and the pressure was starting to get to her. She tried to calm herself down, reminding herself that she had to focus if they were going to get out of this alive.

She worked at the knots on Hiro's rope, trying to stay as quiet as possible. As she worked, Hiro's eyes met hers and she could see the fear in them. She knew that they were all in danger, but she refused to give up. With a final tug, the rope came loose, and Hiro was free.

---

Rebecca knew that the next thing that she needs to do is to come up with a plan to get them out of this room and to safety. She scanned the room, her eyes darting from one corner to another, looking for any clues that could help her.

As she looked around, she noticed a ventilation duct near the ceiling. It was a small opening, but she thought it might be just big enough for them to crawl through. She also noticed that the door had a keypad lock, but she didn't have the code.

She turned to Hiro and his father. "Do either of you know the code to the door?" she asked.

Hiro shook his head. "Nope" he said.

His father was silent, his eyes downcast.

Rebecca sighed, feeling the weight of the situation. "We need to find another way out," she said, looking around the room again.

As she scanned the room, she noticed a metal filing cabinet in the corner. It was locked, but she thought it might contain something that could help them escape.

She stood up and walked over to the filing cabinet. She tried the drawers, but they were all locked. She examined the lock on one of the drawers, trying to figure out if she could pick it.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps outside the door. She quickly backed away from the filing cabinet and stood behind Hiro and his father, her heart racing.

The door opened and two men walked in. They were the same men who captured her from earlier.

"Get back in your chairs," one of them said, pointing his gun at Hiro and his father.

Rebecca knew she had to act quickly. She looked around the room, trying to find something she could use as a weapon. She spotted a metal pipe lying on the floor near the filing cabinet. She quickly grabbed it and swung it at one of the men.

The man stumbled back, caught off guard by Rebecca's sudden attack. The other man raised his gun, but Rebecca swung the pipe again, hitting him in the arm.

The man dropped his gun, and Rebecca kicked it away, then swung the pipe again, hitting him in the head.

Both men were now unconscious, and Rebecca dropped the pipe, her heart racing. She knew they had to get out of the room quickly before more men arrived.

She turned to Hiro and his father. "We have to move quickly," she said. "There's a ventilation duct near the ceiling. I think we can crawl through it to escape."

Hiro and his father nodded, and they quickly moved to the duct. Rebecca helped them climb onto the metal grating, then she climbed up after them.

The duct was tight, and Rebecca had to crawl on her hands and knees. She could hear Hiro and his father breathing heavily beside her. She knew they were scared, but she also knew they had to keep moving.

They crawled for what felt like hours, the metal grating cutting into their hands and knees. Rebecca felt like she was suffocating, the air in the duct hot and stale.

Finally, they saw a light up ahead. They crawled faster, pushing their way through the grating and dropping to the floor on the other side.

They were in a small room, and Rebecca quickly scanned the area.

Her eyes fell on a desk in the corner of the room, cluttered with various papers and office supplies. She made her way over to it and began to sift through the mess.

As she sorted through the papers, her thoughts raced. Would I find the USB drive here? What if they were too late and the bad guys had already taken it? She tried to push those thoughts aside and stay focused on the task at hand. She couldn't afford to give up now.

Finally, her hand brushed against something hard and small. She looked down and saw the USB drive nestled between some files. Relief washed over her as she grabbed it and held it up to the light, examining it closely.

She knew they needed to act fast. With the drive in hand, they had evidence that could bring down the entire money laundering operation. But they still needed to find a way out of this room.

Rebecca tucked the USB drive into her pocket and turned to leave the small room. As she stepped back into the main area, she saw that Hiro and his father had finished their own search and were standing near the door.

"We found nothing," Hiro said, his voice filled with frustration.

"I found the USB drive," Rebecca said, holding it up for them to see.

Hiro's father let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness," he said. "Now we just need to find a way out of here."

Rebecca nodded in agreement. She looked around the room, searching for any clues or tools that could help them escape.

Rebecca looked around the small room, trying to find a way out. The walls were made of thick concrete, and the door was solid steel. There was no way they could break through either of them. She turned her attention to the window on the far wall. It was small, barely big enough for a person to crawl through, but it was their only chance.

Rebecca rushed towards the window and examined it closely. It was covered with metal bars, but they were rusted and looked as if they had not been maintained for years. She could see that the bars were attached to the frame with bolts. Rebecca scanned the room for something she could use as a tool to unscrew the bolts. She spotted an old metal chair in the corner of the room.

She picked up the chair and brought it to the window. She placed the chair under the window and stood on it. She reached up and tried to twist one of the bolts with her fingers, but they were too tight. She needed a tool. She looked around the room again, and this time she saw a metal pipe on the floor. She picked up the pipe and used it to unscrew the bolts. The metal bars came loose, and she pushed them aside.

Rebecca climbed out of the window and onto the rooftop of the building. She looked around and saw that they were on the edge of town, with no one in sight. She turned back to the window and helped Hiro's father climb out. Hiro followed shortly after, and the three of them stood on the rooftop, trying to figure out what to do next.

They looked around and saw that there was a fire escape ladder leading down to the street. Rebecca helped Hiro's father climb down first, then Hiro, and finally, she climbed down herself. They landed softly on the ground and ran towards the nearest main street.

Rebecca, Hiro, and his father ran towards the nearest main street, their hearts racing with fear and adrenaline. As they turned the corner, they heard footsteps running behind them. Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, and they all instinctively ducked for cover.

Rebecca peeked out from behind a nearby car and saw a dark figure in a black suit standing a few feet away, holding a gun. The figure raised the gun and aimed it at Rebecca, but Hiro quickly jumped in front of her, taking the bullet meant for her.

Rebecca screamed in terror and disbelief as she watched Hiro fall to the ground, blood pooling around him. His father quickly pulled her away and they continued to run, but Rebecca was in shock, her mind unable to process what just happened.

As they ran, they could hear the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer, and Rebecca's heart raced with fear. She felt a mix of emotions - fear, anger, sadness - all at once. How could someone be so heartless to shoot an innocent person?

Hiro's father kept pushing her to run, but Rebecca felt paralyzed with grief and shock. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving Hiro behind. But the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer snapped her out of her daze, and she forced herself to move.

They ran towards a crowded area, hoping to lose the shooter in the crowd. But the shooter was relentless, still pursuing them. Suddenly, they heard another gunshot, and Rebecca feared the worst.

But when she looked back, she saw that the shooter had fallen to the ground, hit by a bullet fired by a police officer who had been alerted by the sound of gunfire.

Rebecca collapsed to the ground, tears streaming down her face. She couldn't believe that they had made it out alive, but at the cost of Hiro's life.

She couldn't believe what had just happened - it was like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to process the reality of the situation. Hiro, the man she loved, was gone. And he had died protecting her.

As she ran, her mind raced with thoughts and emotions. She felt immense guilt, wondering if there was something she could have done to prevent this tragedy. She also felt angry and betrayed by the world - why did bad things always seem to happen to good people?

Her thoughts kept drifting back to Hiro and the moments before his death. She replayed the scene over and over in her head, wishing she could go back and do something differently.

But no matter how much she wished for a different outcome, the reality remained the same. Hiro was gone, and Rebecca was left to pick up the pieces.

As she continued to lay on the ground, Rebecca's mind started to wander to memories of Hiro - the way he smiled when she made him laugh, the sound of his voice when he whispered sweet nothings in her ear. She clung to these memories like a lifeline, desperate to keep them alive in her heart.

But at the same time, the pain of his loss was almost too much to bear. Rebecca felt like a part of her had died with Hiro, leaving her feeling empty and alone.

Rebecca took a deep breath and tried to steel herself for what was to come. She knew that the fight wasn't over yet, that there were still battles to be fought and victories to be won. And even though Hiro was no longer by her side, she knew that his memory would give her the strength to keep going.

Rebecca couldn't bring herself to speak, the shock and grief too overwhelming. And with that, Rebecca slowly loses consciousness.
