My name was Richard Collins, and I was known as one of the most acclaimed engineers in the energy field. I was in charge of the flagship dawn project, an innovative way to generate energy in a clean and sustainable way. My team and I had been hard at work for months in a state-of-the-art research lab, dedicated to discovering a way to move atoms faster than light, a revolutionary breakthrough in energy science.
It was on a busy day, while reviewing data from one of our tests, that I noticed a small flaw in one of the components that transferred power from the motor to the facility's batteries. The flaw appeared to be insignificant, but my inquisitive mind and engineering instincts led me to investigate further.
I spent hours analyzing the data and conducting experiments to understand the impact of that small flaw. It was then that I discovered something surprising: the flaw had actually created a breach in the known laws of physics, allowing atoms to move at speeds never before imagined. It was a revolutionary finding that had the potential to change the world.
I was thrilled and shared my findings with my team. Together, we worked hard to develop and perfect this new technology. Soon, the dawn star project attracted the attention of the scientific community and the energy industry worldwide. Our work became internationally acclaimed and recognized, and I became a leading figure in the energy field.
However, it was not all smooth sailing. There were challenges and obstacles along the way. The pressure of expectation and the responsibility of leading such a large project sometimes became overwhelming. There were also interests and rivalries that threatened to undermine our work and our reputation.
But with determination and perseverance, we overcame every obstacle.
As the dawn star project gained recognition, offers and opportunities for me as an engineer also began to arrive.
Our discovery of how to move atoms faster than light thanks to a small flaw in one of the experimental engine components had generated overwhelming international attention. The oil barons approached me with proposals to buy the project, but I flatly refused, thinking of the future of mankind and how my name would be among the great men of science.
However, when the oil barons' proposals were rejected, they were furious and began sending thugs and assassins after my research team. Not only did I have the pressure of the oil barons on my shoulders, but the oil barons were also very angry.
The great governments of the world also tried to extinguish the flame of knowledge, since it was not convenient for them to have something that could affect their pockets.
The sabotages to the "Lucero del Alba" project started in a subtle way. At first, materials were stolen inside the building where we worked. Then, plant personnel began to mysteriously disappear. But soon the sabotage became more serious, culminating in the tampering of one of the experimental engines that would allow us to travel faster than light. The problem was that, to fully test the engine, we needed to take it out of Earth orbit, since the Earth's gravitational field and atmosphere interfere with its proper functioning.
Attacks on our project were constant and increasingly dangerous. Our team was under overwhelming pressure to complete the project before the sabotage completely destroyed it. We worked around the clock, taking extra precautions to protect the research and equipment. We hired additional security and made sure our facilities were well guarded.
As the situation became more tense, we also sought support from the international scientific community and governments interested in advancing science and technology for the benefit of humanity. However, we encountered a lot of resistance. The oil barons used their influence and wealth to pressure governments and other scientists to oppose our project. Some scientists even began to question the ethics and feasibility of our work, arguing that it could have dangerous or unknown consequences.
Despite the obstacles, we went ahead with our project, trying to protect it from sabotage and external pressure. However, it became increasingly difficult to stay on track. The attacks were becoming more sophisticated and the attempts at bribery and blackmail were intensifying. I felt exhausted and frustrated, but I was determined not to give in to the threats and pressures.
I was reviewing the latest reports of the experiments in the laboratory of the Morning Star when I noticed something alarming. One of the experimental engines was leaking fuel and the control console on engine number 4 was displaying a warning of overheating in the combustion chamber. I realized that the alarms in the lab were not going off due to the heavy sabotage we had faced in the past few days.
Without wasting any time, I ran to warn the personnel who were performing the last tests on the engines. I knew I could not allow the engine to explode, as that could have catastrophic consequences for the lab and the project itself. However, before I could reach the test chamber, the ground began to split beneath my feet.
Cracks opened up in the ground and beams of light emanated from them, changing color violently. The scene was surreal and terrifying. I realized that the engine explosion had caused a chain reaction and we were in the middle of a disaster. Despite my attempts to warn the staff, it was too late. The explosion in the experiment chamber had been devastated due to the mixture of fuel and highly radioactive elements we were using to power the engines.
The laboratory was filled with smoke and dust, and chaos reigned. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the situation was chaotic. Some of my team members were injured and others were in shock. Although we managed to evacuate most of the staff to safety, the laboratory had suffered significant damage.
Despite the presence of emergency services on site, the situation was getting worse and worse. What had started as a collapse of engine number 4 and a subsequent unintentional demolition of the building was turning into a real catastrophe. The water that the firefighters were throwing to try to control the fire came into contact with the highly radioactive exotic materials that had been formed by the detonation of the engine core. This triggered a chain reaction, in which the water was transformed into pure energy, causing a second, larger explosion. The situation was desperate.
Even though I knew I was exposed to lethal doses of radiation and felt a strong metallic taste in my mouth, I ran straight to ground zero of the explosion, where engine number 4 was still located. I knew that if I did not stop the engine manually, it would not stop until it reached hypercriticality, where the resulting explosion would make the czar's bomb seem insignificant in comparison.
I waded into the chaos, avoiding the debris and radiation that was spreading everywhere. I used my knowledge of how the engine worked to try to stop it, but the task was overwhelming. The radiation was intense and I felt my body weakening rapidly. Despite this, I did not give up.
With determination and skill, I managed to disable the engine systems and stop the chain reaction.
Although I had succeeded in stopping the catastrophe, I knew I had paid a high price. My body was weakened by the radiation exposure and I felt exhausted. Despite all my efforts, I saw the engine come back to life once again, this time I could not run from it. I approached it slowly, due to my horrible state of health, I felt as if I had gone into free fall. At the same time, I watched as the engine gave one last explosion, but instead of the energy being released violently, a small multicolored portal formed, rapidly changing shape and size, without maintaining a consistent shape.
I stood perplexed, watching the portal in amazement. It was something I had never seen before. I was intrigued, but also wary. My body was weak and my senses were confused due to the radiation exposure. However, something about the portal appealed to me irresistibly. I felt a strange combination of fear and fascination as I watched it.
The portal seemed to call to me, as if it had some sort of magnet. Despite my physical state, I could not resist the temptation and moved closer. As I got closer, a strange sensation came over me. I felt as if my body was slowly falling apart, as if my skin cells and bones were separating. Although this should have been terrifying, I felt no pain. Instead, I experienced a strange euphoria, as if I was floating in a state of ecstasy.
The portal kept changing shape and color at breakneck speed. Bright, vibrant colors were mixing and merging in chaotic patterns. I felt as if I was being pulled by an invisible force into the portal. I had no control over my body, it was as if I was being carried by an invisible current.
Suddenly, I stepped through the threshold of the portal. The sensation was overwhelming. I was enveloped in a series of visions and sensations that were as strange as they were fascinating. I remembered my college days, when I had tried hallucinogenic mushrooms. But this was different. The visions were more vivid, more intense. I felt as if I was traveling through unknown dimensions, as if I was being transported through space and time.
I saw images of places and beings I had never imagined before. Some were beautiful, while others were horrible and terrifying. I experienced intense emotions, from the purest joy to the deepest terror. My mind was overwhelmed by the magnitude of what I was witnessing.
As the visions became more and more intense, my body felt rejuvenated. Weakness and fatigue disappeared, replaced by a sense of renewed energy. My mind was clear and my senses sharp. I felt more alive than ever.
The visions continued for what seemed like an eternity, although I didn't get to feel my body much longer, I felt as if I could see into the infinity of the cosmos and make sense of it all.
With a sense of curiosity and excitement, I quickly approached the galaxy that seemed to be my destination. As I got closer, I noticed that it was unlike any other galaxy I had seen before. It emitted a multicolored glow and seemed to be vibrating with an inexplicable energy.
As I moved deeper into the galaxy, the visions became more intense. I experienced a mixture of emotions, from awe and wonder to confusion and insecurity. Yet something inside me was urging me to keep going, to discover what awaited me in the heart of this galaxy.
Finally, I arrived at a place in the center of the galaxy that seemed to be the origin of the powerful energy that enveloped it. I found myself face to face with a cosmic entity, an immense and majestic presence that seemed to be the source of everything I had been experiencing.
The entity communicated with me telepathically, sharing with me knowledge and wisdom beyond my human comprehension. It revealed to me that the multicolored portal I had passed through was an interdimensional gateway created by the energy of the engine I had been trying to escape from. Exposure to the radiation had triggered a transformation in me, allowing me to travel through space and time in a completely new way.
I realized that I had paid a high price for this transformation. My body was weakened and my health was compromised. However, the cosmic entity assured me that it was there to help me, to guide me on my new path and to share with me a universal knowledge that transcended the limits of the reality I knew.
I spent what seemed like an eternity in the company of the cosmic entity, absorbing its wisdom and expanding my understanding of the universe. I learned about the intrinsic connection between all things, about the true nature of time and space, and about the importance of energy and consciousness in the creation of the cosmos.
Over time, my body recovered and my mind became clearer. I realized that I had been chosen for this unique experience, that my exposure to radiation and my passage through the multicolored portal had not been coincidental, but part of a larger cosmic plan.
Finally, it was time to leave. The cosmic entity thanked me for opening me to new possibilities. With deep gratitude and a sense of fulfillment in my heart, I stepped through the multicolored portal again, returning to known space.
But, I had not returned to earth, I was in an absolute emptiness that was only interrupted by a humanoid entity sitting on a chair, -your little trip, was not the end of your adventure, friend, rather, it was the beginning of a new one, you are asking yourself at this moment, why can't you talk, the answer is easy, because I don't want you to talk - said the humanoid entity while pointing at me with his index finger.
I was in an absolute void, without any point of reference, and the presence of this mysterious entity intrigued me. Despite not being able to speak, I tried to communicate with it through my mind, but it seemed that my thoughts were also blocked. I could not understand how I was in this situation, nor who this being was who claimed to be a primordial, the first among the first, and that it needed something from me.
The primordial continued to speak, explaining that he had created his siblings and that he needed a favor from me. My curiosity was growing, though I also felt puzzled and somewhat helpless as I was unable to express my thoughts or ask questions.
The being in the chair slowly got up and began to walk towards me. It was an imposing figure, with a majestic presence and an energy that seemed to encompass all the empty space around it. As he approached, I could sense his power and wisdom, but also a kind of compassion in his gaze.
Richard, your journey is not over," said the primordial one in a deep, resonant voice that seemed to echo in my mind. - You have been chosen for an important task that only you can carry out. However, to do so, I need you to trust me and follow me no questions asked. Are you willing?
Although I could not speak, I nodded my head, indicating my consent. I felt a mixture of fear and excitement at the unknown, but also an inexplicable trust in this being. He seemed to know what he was doing and had answers to questions I had not yet asked.
The primordial one reached out his hand to me and gently rested it on my shoulder. I felt a surge of energy coursing through my entire body, as if awakening something inside me. My vocal cords seemed to unblock and I was able to speak for the first time in that strange place.
Who are you? What do you need from me? - I asked in a trembling voice.
The primordial smiled, as if waiting for my question.
I am the guardian of the universes, the being who watches over the balance and harmony in the multiverse - he answered. - And I need your help to restore a dimension that has fallen into darkness. You have been chosen because you possess a unique quality, a special connection to the primordial energy that may be the key to restoring balance in that dimension.
I was overwhelmed by the responsibility I was being given, but also intrigued by the idea of being able to assist in such a momentous task. Although I didn't know exactly what it entailed or how I would accomplish it, I felt a growing determination.
The primordial one noticed my expectant expression and smiled benevolently. He seemed to understand my curiosity and yearning to know more.
I see you are intrigued, Richard," he said in a deep, resonant voice. - Your thirst for knowledge is admirable. Let me tell you more about my story and why I need you.
I sat on the floor, completely absorbed in his words. The primordial began to narrate his origin, telling me about how he and his primordial brothers were the creators of the universe, triggering the Big Bang that gave rise to all that exists. He explained to me that each of them had an important role in creating and maintaining the balance of the multiverse, and that their role was to ensure that the primordial energy flowed properly and nourished all living things in all dimensions.
However, in a dimension far away, something went wrong. A dark force took over that reality and corrupted the primordial energy, plunging the dimension into darkness and chaos. The primordial brothers tried to restore the balance, but their efforts were in vain. It was then that the primordial in front of me, the original creator of all the primordials, decided to look for someone with a unique connection to the primordial energy who could help him restore the light in that dimension.
And that person is you, Richard," said the primordial, looking at me with a penetrating gaze. - Your previous journey through space-time was only the beginning of your role in this new adventure. Your connection to the primordial energy is what I need to restore the balance in that dimension and bring the light back to that world.
I nodded, taking in all the information he had given me. Although I still had many questions, I felt a deep connection to the purpose the primordial one was presenting to me. I knew I could not resist the opportunity to be part of something so momentous and meaningful.
I am willing to help you," I said with determination. - I will do everything in my power to restore the light in that dimension and fulfill this mission you have given me.
The primordial one smiled, seeming satisfied with my answer.
I knew I could count on you, Richard," he said gratefully. - I will give you the necessary power to face the challenges you will encounter in that dimension and I will guide you on your way. But you must remember, it will not be easy and you will face dangers you have never faced before.
I nodded, mentally preparing myself for what was to come. I felt a surge of primordial energy flowing through me, strengthening me and preparing me for the task ahead.
-My friend, let me tell you the story of this world you will live on. It is a planet that has been technologically stuck in the high medieval period. The once mighty empires and kingdoms are now on the verge of collapse. High society is corrupt to the core, with leaders who care only for their own interests and sustain themselves from the fruits of the toils of the working class.
Inequality is overwhelming in this world. The majority of society suffers under the hunger and yoke of the upper class, who exploit them relentlessly to maintain their opulent lifestyle. The people's resources are sent to finance incessant wars that only benefit the ruling class and perpetuate their domination over the population.
The elite in this world are oppressive and demanding. They behave as if they are above laws and moral standards, doing as they please without facing consequences. They use their wealth and power to maintain their status quo, without concern for the suffering of the rest of the population. Despair and fear are constant feelings among the working class, who live under the constant abuse of the elite.
In this world, the few citizen republics and independent cities that exist are cruelly and incessantly attacked by the old kingdoms. These attacks occur simply because these cities have different views from those of the ruling kingdoms. Intolerance towards diversity of opinion is a reality, and any attempt to challenge the elite status quo is violently repressed.
Class struggle is a constant in this world. The nobility, who consider themselves a superior class, are seen by the majority of the population as a parasitic and oppressive class. Ordinary citizens see their efforts exploited by the elite, while they themselves can barely meet their basic needs. Frustration and indignation are palpable in society, but the lack of resources and the overwhelming power of the elite hinder any attempt at change.
In the midst of this dark landscape, a few courageous individuals fight for justice and equality. Resistance groups form in the shadows, trying to confront the oppression of the elite and seek a better life for all. However, they face numerous obstacles and risks, as repression by the ruling class is fierce.
In spite of everything, hope is still alive in some hearts. The spark of resistance burns in those who dream of a more just and equitable world. Though the road may be difficult and dangerous, those who fight for change know that they cannot stand idly by. The history of this world is full of adversity, but also of courage and perseverance. Only time will tell if the scales tip toward justice and equality, or if the dark reign of the elite will prevail.
-On this continent, independent republics and cities are few and far between and under constant threat. The old kingdoms, anxious to maintain their power and suppress any views that do not align with their own, attack and oppress those who seek autonomy and freedom. Oppression and cruelty are rife in this world, where fear and despair are the predominant emotions.
The independent cities, despite their struggle to maintain their autonomy, face a constant battle for survival and the defense of their freedom. The attacks of the oppressor kingdoms are relentless, and ordinary citizens must organize and resist bravely to protect their rights and their way of life.
Independent cities are bastions of resistance in this cruel world. Although they face constant attacks from oppressive kingdoms, they remain steadfast in their struggle for autonomy and freedom. Ordinary citizens, tired of oppression, find refuge in these cities, where they are welcomed and offered a chance for a better life.
However, the struggle is not easy. The oppressive kingdoms use every means at their disposal to maintain their power. Censorship, violence and intimidation are used to silence those who seek justice and equality. But despite this, resistance persists.
The struggles are intense and the sacrifices are great, but the hope for a better future drives the resistance forward. Ordinary citizens, once oppressed and exploited, rise up against the corrupt elite and fight for their rights and dignity.
But, heavenly, what awaits me when I go down to that place?
-that I can answer you, there are many things I can't say, what I can tell you is that your soul and your conscience, with your experiences will enter and share the same body with a poor child of the main human empire, you will learn and live again in this world, where magic exists, with all its dangers and novelties, now my friend, I wish you good luck, may your morals not be corrupted by this world and may you live long enough to make a change- immediately after, the primordial touches me again, this time, it touches me gently on the forehead, to which I feel how I am quickly displaced downwards, leaving the emptiness in which I was.
I descended quickly, feeling how my consciousness merged with that of the child in whose body I was to dwell. I felt a strong tingling sensation throughout my being, as if I were being torn apart and put back together again at the same time. Then, suddenly, I opened my eyes and found myself in a small dark room, with damp stone walls and a dim light coming in through a small barred window.
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
I realized I was in a child's body, with small arms and legs and a sense of vulnerability I hadn't experienced in a long time. I looked around and saw that the room was nearly empty, with a threadbare bed, a table with a flickering candle, and a trunk in one corner. I stood up awkwardly and walked over to the window to take a look outside.
What I saw left me perplexed. I was in a city in ruins, with broken cobblestone streets, crumbling buildings and an atmosphere of despair in the air. People were walking the streets with sad and dejected looks on their faces, some wearing rags for clothes and others desperately looking for something to eat. I realized immediately that this was a place where oppression and cruelty were rife, as the primordial had warned me.
I clearly remember the moment when I merged my soul with that of the boy, now named Charlie. It was an overwhelming experience, as suddenly, all of the boy's memories, emotions and knowledge mingled with my own. Charlie was a child of a subspecies of human from this world, a skian; living on a world on the brink of civil war.
I came across his memories of a difficult life in the reformed part of the human federation. Charlie was 13 years old and lived with his two sisters, Alice and Sarah, as well as his parents, Marlo and Juana. Despite the stress in his world, his family held together and struggled to survive amidst the uncertainty and violence that was coming.
Marlo, Charlie's father, was a political activist fighting for the rights of the reformers, a faction that sought changes in the central government of the human federation to ensure greater equality and justice for all species inhabiting that system. Joan, Charlie's mother, was also involved in the struggle, providing support to her husband and caring for her children with love and courage.
Charlie was an intelligent and curious young man, always seeking to learn more about the politics and history of his world. Although his family protected him as much as they could, he was aware of the dangers they faced because of his activism. However, that did not stop him in his desire to fight for what he believed was right.
His sisters, Alice and Sarah, were his unwavering support. Alice, the eldest, was a brave and determined young woman who had also become involved in the resistance. Sarah, the youngest, was still a toddler, but already showed signs of having the same determination as her older siblings.
Through Charlie's memories, I experienced the challenges and oppression they faced as a family. The peaceful demonstrations they attended were suppressed by central government security forces, and tensions continued to rise. Despite the risks, Charlie and his family continued to fight for a better future, for a world where all species were treated with equality and respect.
As I adapted to Charlie's life, I also faced his own personal challenges. I realized that despite the difficult situation in which he lived, Charlie maintained his integrity and empathy for others. I learned from him about the importance of solidarity, compassion and perseverance in the midst of adversity.
As time went on, my connection to Charlie's soul grew stronger. I learned to appreciate his courage and dedication to the fight for justice and equality. Through his eyes, I saw the suffering and brutal oppression he and his family faced from the nobles' faction in the human federation. Every day was a battle for survival in the midst of a world riven by violence and conflict.
However, everything came to a head when an assassination attempt on our family, perpetrated by the nobles, resulted in the death of our parents. It was a devastating blow to Charlie and his sisters, as well as to me, as I shared his body and emotions. We were forced to flee the federation and seek refuge in a place far from any conflict, the island of Grothal.
Grothal was a remote and isolated place, far from the civil war raging in the rest of the world. It was a lush and tranquil island, where nature was pristine and life was harmonious. Charlie and her sisters found refuge in a small community of refugees of different species who had fled the war in search of peace and safety.
The first few months in Grothal were extremely difficult. We arrived in the middle of winter, with few provisions and barely enough to survive. Charlie, Sarah, Alice and I, along with other war orphans, struggled day by day to find food, water and shelter on the island. The unforgiving weather and precarious living conditions brought us to the brink of death on several occasions.
However, one day, when it seemed that we could not resist any longer, a light of hope appeared in our lives. An elf named Lorelein found us in a desperate state and offered us help without hesitation. With her generosity and wisdom, she taught us how to survive on the island and how to take advantage of the natural resources that Grothal offered. He taught us how to hunt, fish and grow our own food. He provided shelter and cared for us as if we were his own family. We owed our lives to her, both my sisters and the other refugees.
Lorelein also helped us integrate into the Grothal community. She introduced us to other inhabitants of the island and helped us gain their trust. Through her guidance, we became an active part of the community, contributing our work and skills to the best of our abilities.
Lorelein brought Khida, a demihuman with dog ancestry, to our community on the morning of the winter solstice, almost a year after we arrived on Grothal. Khida was hiding behind Lorelein's dress, clearly frightened and trembling.
Lorelein looked at me with a warm smile and said, "All right, Charlie, I'll see to it that you take care of and introduce Khida to your sisters, okay?"
I nodded enthusiastically, understanding the responsibility I had been assigned. I approached Khida politely and extended my hand to greet her.
"Hi, my name is Charlie, what's yours?" I said with a friendly smile.
Khida looked at me suspiciously and hesitated, "M-much pleasure, Charlie. M-my name is Khida." She did not accept my offered hand, still showing signs of distrust.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Khida," I said calmly, respecting her space and comfort level. "You are welcome to our community. We are all here to help each other. Would you like to meet my sisters and show you our home?"
Khida nodded shyly, and I led her through the community, introducing her to my sisters and other community members. Although she was nervous and reserved at first, she soon began to relax and smile shyly as she interacted with the people in the orphanage
Lorelein accompanied her at all times, offering words of encouragement and making sure she felt welcome and safe. Khida slowly began to open up, sharing some details of her history and the challenges she had faced as a refugee from the war in the human federation.
At the end of the day, after community activities, we gathered in the dining room to share dinner. Khida joined us, although she still seemed nervous about being around so many people. Timidly, she began to talk to us about her experience of the day, sharing her impressions and emotions. At first, she spoke softly and seemed a bit reserved, but as time went on, she became more comfortable.
"I'm glad I joined you today," Khida said with a shy smile. "I was nervous at first, but everyone has been very kind and welcoming."
"We're glad to have you here," I said with a comforting smile. "We're all one big family here at Grothal, and we're here to support each other."
My sisters, Alice and Sarah, nodded enthusiastically. Alice, the oldest of the three, spoke up enthusiastically, "Yes, definitely. We are a strong, close-knit community, and we look out for each other."
Sarah, the youngest of the three, added with a mischievous grin, "Plus, you can't deny that community dinners are always delicious - it's one of the best times of the day!"
Khida laughed shyly, and I noticed her expression becoming more relaxed. As we continued to talk, Khida opened up more and more, sharing more about her life, her culture and her interests. We discovered that we had a lot of common ground and shared a passion for justice and equality.
Over time, both Khida and I realized that we had a special bond. We understood each other as refugees. We shared a deep connection based on our shared experiences and our struggle for a better world.
"It's amazing how life has led us here," Khida said with a sincere smile. "I feel grateful to have found a place where I feel accepted and supported."
"We're glad you feel that way," I told her warmly. "You are part of our family here at Grothal, and we will always be here for you."
My sisters nodded in agreement, expressing their support for Khida. Together, we became close friends.
At the end of dinner, Lorelein approached me and asked me to accompany her to a quieter place. "Charlie, I need to talk to you for a moment," she said as she beckoned me closer with her hand.
Intrigued, I followed her through the halls until I reached her office. "Okay, but make it important, I still want to talk about a lot of things with Khida," I said as we walked into her office.
Lorelein looked me seriously in the eyes and said, "Charlie, what I am about to tell you is highly important to your future. As you were talking with your sisters and Khida, I noticed something inside of you."
Confusion came over me as I listened to her intently. "Something inside me?", I asked curiously but also with a bit of fear.
"Charlie, thanks to spending most of my youth as an educator at the Magic Academy, I know when a person is about to develop a magical core," Lorelein told me with a piercing look. "By any chance, were your parents wizards?".
My mind filled with surprise. I had never before considered the possibility of having magical abilities. My parents were ordinary people, at least I thought they were. "My parents are not wizards, at least I think so," I answered truthfully.
Lorelein nodded, but her expression remained serious. "It may be that magic has arisen in you spontaneously, as it often does in some cases," she explained. "It's important for you to know, Charlie, because if you have a magical core, your abilities could manifest at any time and you need to be prepared."
I was overwhelmed by the news. The idea of having magical abilities was exciting but also terrifying. I didn't know what it would mean for my life and how it might affect my relationship with the people around me.
"What should I do then?", I asked Lorelein, seeking guidance.
She looked at me with understanding. "The first thing you should do is keep it a secret, at least for now," she told me. "Not everyone in the Grothal community shares the same view on magic, and it's important that you don't take unnecessary risks."
I nodded solemnly, understanding the importance of keeping it a secret. "I understand, I don't want to cause unnecessary trouble," I said.
Lorelein nodded and then added, "I can also help you develop your magical skills, if you wish. I can mentor you and give you the guidance you need to control and use your abilities responsibly."
I was grateful for her offer and her support. "Thank you, Lorelein, I really appreciate your help," I told her sincerely.
She smiled warmly at me. "I'm here to support you, Charlie. I will always be available to help you on your magical journey, if you so choose."
I met Khida in our room at the orphanage, and was surprised to see that she too had been assigned the same room as my sisters and me. She seemed excited and curious, looking around with interest.
"Wow, looks like we're going to be roommates!" I exclaimed with a smile, trying to hide my nervousness from the conversation I'd had with Lorelein moments before.
"Yes, it looks like it," Khida replied with an equally wide smile. "That's great, so we can get to know each other better and share our experiences in Grothal."
Sarah and Alice, my adopted sisters, also joined in the conversation. "Yes, it will be fun to have Khida with us in the room!" said Sarah excitedly.
"I'm definitely excited to have a new roommate," Alice added with a friendly smile.
Khida nodded enthusiastically. "I'm excited too. I think we'll be good friends and help each other through this new phase."
The conversation flowed naturally, and soon we found ourselves sharing anecdotes and laughter, and with a heavy feeling in my eyelids, I decided it was time to go to sleep.
-Well girls, it's late enough, so, I'm going to bed, good night.
-Good night brother!
-good night Charlie
I went to my room, closed the door behind me, climbed into my bed which was a bunk bed and proceeded to fall asleep when it sounded like my door opened slightly, and in came Khida hugging a stuffed animal that she had been given earlier in the day.
-Khida, what are you doing here?" I asked, my eyes half closed from sleep.
-I had u-u-a nightmare and y-your sisters were already d-sleeping -she looked me in the eyes from the floor, with puppy dog eyes- c-can I sleep w-with you, please?
-(yawning) It's okay, Khida. You can sleep with me. But try not to move too much, okay? I move aside so Khida can get on the bed with her stuffed animal.
-(with a grateful smile) Thank you, Charlie! I promise not to move too much-(she snuggles into bed, hugging her stuffed animal tenderly).
-(I settle into my bed, closing my eyes as drowsiness overcomes me) Good night, Khida.
-(whispers) Good night, Charlie.
Although at first I feel uncomfortable having Khida in my bed, I soon realize that her presence is comforting. It reminds me of my sisters and how we used to take care of each other in the worst of times at the orphanage. I feel comforted knowing that I can provide Khida with security at that moment.
A few minutes pass and I notice that Khida is restless on the bed. She tosses and turns, squeezing her stuffed animal tightly.
-Waking up, I ask Khida, are you okay?
- (whispering) I can't sleep, Charlie. I'm still scared from the nightmare.
-I put a hand on her back to comfort her, "Calm down, Khida. It was just a bad dream. You're safe here. Try to close your eyes and breathe deeply. Everything will be all right.
Khida nods and tries to follow my advice. I close my eyes and listen to her breathe slowly and deeply. Gradually, her breathing becomes more regular and her body relaxes. Finally, she falls asleep.
-(whispering) Good night, Khida," I smile and gently caress her back before falling asleep myself.
For the rest of the night, Khida sleeps peacefully beside me. The next morning, we wake up early and get ready to start another day at the orphanage. Khida thanks me for letting her sleep in my bed and I smile at her, feeling happy to be able to help her.
That day, over breakfast, Khida shares her story with me and how she came to the orphanage. I learn that she lost her family in an armed conflict in her home country and that she has had difficulty adjusting to her new life at the orphanage. We chat about our dreams and hopes for the future, and I realize how brave and resilient Khida is.
After breakfast, I headed off to do my daily activities with Lorelei, which consisted of searching for magical materials in the forest. Normally it was just the two of us, but with Khida's arrival and after seeing how we were doing at breakfast, Lorelei decided to add her to our activities.
And tell me, Lorelei, what are we going to look for today? - I asked her as I went forward looking carefully at the floor in search of some material.
Oh, nothing important, just moon leaf for today. We have enough for another month without going out in the forest, it's been dangerous lately - Lorelei told me while explaining to Khida how to identify plants and fungi.
Hmm, some time ago I saw a moon tree a little further south, in the direction of the mountain - I told them while pointing to a tree that was to the south.
Khida, who was hugging her stuffed animal with a shy smile on her face, seemed excited to join our search.
Can we go there? - she asked enthusiastically.
Of course we will, Khida. Let's see if we can find some moon leaves on that tree - Lorelei replied with an encouraging smile.
We headed towards the tree I pointed out, walking carefully through the trees and bushes of the forest. Lorelei was explaining to Khida how to identify the moon leaves, which were known for their silvery glow in the dark. Khida was paying close attention, absorbing every word from the expert mage.
As we searched, Lorelei also told me about the dangers that had been sighted lately in the forest. There had been sightings of aggressive magical creatures and some areas of the forest were darker and spookier than usual. We took extra precautions and made sure not to venture too far from our base camp.
After a while, we finally found the moon tree I had spotted. The leaves glistened softly in the sunlight filtering through the forest canopy. Lorelei and Khida were excited and began carefully collecting the leaves into a magical bag we were carrying to store our materials.
Amazing! - Khida exclaimed in amazement, as she stroked her stuffed animal with one hand and held the star root with the other.
Yes, it's a real gem to find a star root. Let's take care of it and make sure it grows strong and healthy - said Lorelei excitedly, reaching out her hand to gently caress the plant.
It's definitely an extraordinary find - I added, marveling at the rarity of the magical plant.
Khida looked at the star root with fascination, her eyes shining with excitement. She was clearly delighted with our adventure in search of magical materials.
I had never seen such a plant before. It's really beautiful," Khida said admiringly.
Yes, it is. Magical plants are fascinating and each one has its own unique power and beauty," replied Lorelei, sharing her knowledge with Khida.
Can I touch it? - Khida asked shyly.
Of course, Khida. But be careful, remember that it is a magical plant and we must treat it with respect - Lorelei warned him.
Khida gently reached out her hand and gently stroked the leaves of the star root, feeling its soft and silky texture. A beaming smile formed on her face, and it was evident that she was enjoying the experience.
It's amazing. I've never had the opportunity to be so close to a magical plant before. Thank you for bringing me along on this adventure! - Khida exclaimed gratefully, turning to Lorelei and me.
You're welcome, Khida. We're glad you're having fun and getting to learn more about magic and nature - Lorelei replied with a warm smile.
Yes, it's definitely great to have company on our adventures. Besides, you are a great help in the search for magical materials - I added, appreciating Khida's contribution.
Khida smiled shyly, but was clearly proud to be helpful and be with us. We continued exploring the forest in search of more magical materials, with Khida asking us questions and Lorelei eagerly sharing her magical wisdom. As we moved on, we noticed that the forest was getting darker and the atmosphere more tense.
Guys, I think we should be careful. This forest seems to be darker than usual - warned Lorelei, looking around cautiously.
Watch out! - I shouted desperately as I watched the abomination rush towards Lorelei and Khida.
Lorelei, with her quick reaction, managed to manifest an energy shield just in time, protecting herself and Khida from the creature's onslaught. However, she was now busy defending herself and could not get close to help me.
The abomination changed its target and moved toward me with relentless ferocity. I stood paralyzed with fear, watching it move closer and closer, its sharp claws ready to strike. I tried to move, but my body was unresponsive, the shock of the situation had left my mind and limbs numb.
The creature reached me with a claw that tore my left arm, making me scream in pain. I was thrown to the ground, feeling my body hit the ground hard. The pain spread throughout my body, but the fear was even more overwhelming.
Meanwhile, Lorelei was still struggling to maintain her energy shield and protect Khida. The abomination kept trying to break through the barrier with every onslaught, but Lorelei stood her ground, showing her bravery and magical abilities.
Lorelei, we need help! - I shouted, trying to get up from the ground with difficulty.
Don't worry, Charlie, I'm on it! - Lorelei replied with determination, as she continued to concentrate on maintaining the shield.
The abominable creature continued to stalk Lorelein and Khida, while I lay on the ground, paralyzed with fear and the wound on my arm. But then, something changed inside me. I felt a strange sensation in my chest, as if all my blood was concentrated in one place. An unknown energy was flowing through my body, imbuing me with its power. It was as if I was connecting with nature itself.
My eyes instinctively closed due to the overwhelming pressure I felt inside. However, when I opened them again, everything had changed. I could see the world of magic before my eyes. Bright colors, sparks of energy and ethereal shapes danced around me. I felt as if I had awakened from a long slumber, as if I was finally seeing reality in its true form.
I rose from the ground, feeling a new confidence within me. I looked at the abominable creature that still stalked my friends. I realized that I now had the power to face it. I approached it with a firm step, ignoring the pain in my injured arm. The creature glared at me with its wild eyes and let out a guttural roar.
-Hey, monster, here I am!
The abominable creature roared furiously when it sensed my presence. What I didn't know, however, was that I had summoned the full force of mana and my blood at that moment. My magical awakening was being unleashed. I felt my shirt slit down the side of my back, giving way to a pair of ethereal wings formed from pure mana. Without even having time to take in what was happening, my wings began to attack the creature relentlessly, as I plunged into a berserker state, consumed by the power flowing through me.
-AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
With a primal scream, I fought like a wild animal. I conjured small daggers of pure mana in my hands and lunged at the beast with unleashed ferocity. My wings beat and slashed at the creature, as I launched blasts of magical energy with my daggers, seeking to weaken it every chance I got.
The abominable creature defended itself tooth and nail, trying to move away from my attacks, but I gave no truce. I felt imbued with a strength and agility I had never experienced before. My connection to mana and nature was astounding, and it showed in every move I made.
-DIEEEEEEEE!
My screams echoed across the battlefield, as I continued to attack relentlessly.
Charlie, be careful! Don't overexert yourself.
Unbelievable, Charlie! Keep it up!
The battle was getting more and more intense. The abominable creature was showing signs of weakness, but it was also causing me serious injuries. However, I could not stop. I was completely immersed in my berserker state, letting myself be carried away by the flow of mana and nature's energy.
-YOU WON'T STOP ME!
-DIEEE, AAAAHHHHHHHH!
The creature made one last desperate attempt to attack us, but with a swift movement of my wings, I managed to dodge its onslaught and, with a powerful mana strike, I finally brought it down. The creature vanished in a burst of dark energy, and the battlefield fell silent.
I felt exhausted. The intense battle had depleted my mana reserve completely, leaving me weakened. My body trembled and my legs could barely support me. I felt the adrenaline gradually fade, leaving me drained of energy. Lorelein and Khida called out to me in concern, but their voices sounded farther and farther away, as if they were drifting away.
-Charlie, hang in there, don't give up!
-Dude, don't leave us like this! Hang in there!
My vision was blurring and my mind was clouding. I tried to stand, but my strength was quickly leaving me. Finally, my body gave out and I collapsed to the ground. I couldn't hear or see anything, everything had gone dark.
Lorelein was on the verge of tears, "Charlie, no, it can't be!
Khida said in anguish, "We have to do something! We can't leave him like this!
The voices of my friends echoed far in my mind, but I didn't have the strength to respond. I felt as if I was sinking into darkness, unable to do anything about it. My mind was slowly shutting down, and I drifted into unconsciousness.
