With heavy breaths, I collapsed to the floor and lay down on my back, looking up at the sky. Where earlier the sky was bright and blue, it now had a soft hint of orange, revealing the passage of time in the evening.
Limsa Lominsa is situated in what you could call a sub-tropical setting. The weather is generally warm with lots of sunshine. It's surrounded by the region of La Noscea, which you could probably compare with some Mediterranean regions like Italy or Portugal.
The game had a 70-minute day and night cycle, but I already experienced at least three hours of training just now. My guess was that the days here would also be 24 hours long, but I had no way of telling the time yet.
"I think we should call it a day for now. You look like you can use the rest," Eliphas laughed as he towered above me.
My god, those Au Ra males are tall. It's almost scary. My mind was still processing how small I felt.
But it could've be worse. What if woke up as a Lalafell? I shudder at the thought.
"Everything okay?" Eliphas asked me curiously, as I was just staring into the sky with an empty gaze.
I sat upright and took Eliphas's hand as he reached out to help me up.
"Yeah, don't worry about me, just lost in thought."
"Good. Let's get back to Limsa, I still have something I want to do before getting a room at the inn."
As neared the tempest gate, I stopped suddenly, realizing something I had completely overlooked.
"Shit," I said out loud. "I have no money for the inn."
Eliphas turned around after hearing me and started laughing softly.
"Don't worry about that. I can reassure you that there is nothing to worry about."
Looking up at him, my face was enough for him to understand my next question.
"If you visit The Drowning Wench, you will find the adventures' guild there as well. There you can ask for a room at the inn. If you tell them you're an adventurer, they will ask you to register with them and then they will permit you to stay for free."
My eyes shot open in surprise. The game had a free inn as a way to make it easier for players to manage their inventory and use the glamour dresser, to name a few things. In my mind, that was only a game mechanic that was there for convenience, not something that was for everyone.
"Wait, really? I didn't know that."
We continued walking towards the Tempest gate as Eliphas explained about the inn.
"For a long time the leaders of Limsa have been having trouble with others on and around the island. The most recent aggressor being the Garlean Empire. After the last calamity, the Yellowjackets, who have been around since the Sixth Astral Era, became a peacekeeping force in the area of La Noscea. They were assigned a position within the Maelstrom Grand Company and now venture to keep the region safe."
I was puzzled as to how this related to the inn being free of charge. I tried to remember if the game alluded to it, but came up empty. I couldn't let him know I was aware of the Yellowjackets already, at least not in this much detail. I had lost my memory, after all.
"That's really interesting, I had no idea there was so much history there." My surprise on the info being genuine. "But what does that have to do with the inn being free of charge?"
We had already passed the Tempest Gate when Eliphas stopped halfway down the bridge leading back into Limsa and turned to face me.
"The Yellowjackets may be peacekeepers in the region, but the region of La Noscea is large. It is divided into six different regions, so I take it you can guess what that does to a group, trying to protect everyone." He looked at me, waiting for me to answer his statement.
It wasn't hard to figure out the answer, and it made me realize why the inn might be free of charge.
"Hmm," I hummed with a finger on my chin. "I think I understand what you are trying to get at. The Yellowjackets are spread thin throughout the regions and thus can't always be everywhere at once. For that reason, the adventures' guilt provides free logging for any adventurer that is willing to help with the requests that the Yellowjackets can't spare the men for." I said with a proud smile.
"Though I might be a bit too optimistic on that last part. Believing a bit too much in the good of the system and the people in it."
Eliphas nodded, satisfied with my answer.
"You are correct on both statements. The adventurer's guild employs people to help with the work the Yellowjackets can't take up. But the reason for it is less 'we can't handle all the work' and more often 'we can't be bothered', which is frustrating at times."
He shook his head while he said that, and his overall demeanor showed his annoyance with the situation.
"There is one thing you should know about the situation that presents itself here in Limsa."
I nodded, well aware that there were three Grand Companies in total to deal with. Though my knowledge of their history was lacking, I couldn't let him know that I knew their names already.
"Oh?" I questioned. "What might that be?"
"Limsa isn't the only place where there is some form of strive between the grand companies. For instance, Ul'dah has The Immortal Flames. The Grand company was created to support the Sultansworn as their numbers are thinning out. It is led by general Raubahn's adopted son Pipin Tarupin. Their main focus is to protect the city from harm so they rarely venture out to protect people in the region of Thanalan. That's where the adventures are shoved in to take care of that. Then there is the Order of the Twin Adder in Gridania. That company operates a little differently but still have to ask for the help to keep the region of the Black Shroud as safe as possible."
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
I was surprised with the amount of backstory for these companies. I never really looked into them from the moment you get to choose one. That being said, the basic knowledge I had was enough to understand exactly what Eliphas explaining.
"That is really interesting. So I take it the Adventures' Guild is also located in the other cities?" I asked, knowing full well the answer.
"You are correct in that assumption. But for now I think that is enough explaining. I know I can get wrapped up in ramblings about history. I do enjoy learning lots about the word so sorry if I bored you just now."
I shook my head and waved away his apology.
"No, please don't apologize, it was very interesting to learn. If I want to be an adventurer, I at least need to know some stuff about the word. In my current state it would be more important to learn as much as I can. So thank you for spending all this time with me and helping me understand the world a bit more."
I was genuinely happy with his teachings. From the moment I got off the ship this morning, I knew things were different in this world compared to the game world. Things were more realistic and it seemed that some parts of the game aren't even a thing now. There was much to learn, and I had no idea what was to come for me in this world.
As I did earlier in the day, I took a good look at the view from the bridge. The sun was setting ever so slightly with each passing minute. The sky slowly lost its blue color, replaced by a warm orange glow, changing the atmosphere of the city completely.
"This view never gets old does it?" Eliphas said as he saw me staring into the distant horizon.
The railing of the bridge was just right for me to rest my crossed arms on it and rest my head on them.
"I don't know, but it feels like I have never seen anything so beautiful."
Eliphas pulled himself away from the guardrail and stretched his arms above his head.
"Ugh," he groaned out loud. "Well, I am checking out for now. Let's meet here, tomorrow at noon. I am guessing there are still some things you might not know off yet."
Pulling myself away from the railing, I nodded in agreement.
"That would be a wonderful idea. Thank you again for all the help today. I feel allot more confident about my adventuring future than I did this morning." My big happy smile was uncontainable.
"I'm glad you feel that way. Means I did a good job." He laughed and turned towards the city and made a waving motion above his head.
"See you later, little miss."
"See you later!" I called out after him.
Wait! He did not just call me a 'little miss', did he!
This was the first time in this and my previous life, I was ever called 'little miss'. It sent my head for a loop and it took some taps on the cheeks to pull me out of it.
The weird thing about my situation was that, most of the day had gone by without me even thinking about my changed gender. For some reason it all felt normal when I was just walking around. All the movements I made felt normal, and the clothing I wore was anything but something I would normally feel comfortable in.
Did I really just spawn in this world? It feels more like the body already does half the work for me. Maybe I'm just overthinking things. I better get some rest at the inn. It has been a long day.
After a few minutes of walking, I reached the Drowning Wench. I knew the layout of it, and I went to the desk of the Adventures Guild. They took my information and guided me to the inn. There a maid showed me the massive room I would be staying in.
The room was massive, especially as I was not that big to begin with. The room was a combination of dark wooden floor boards splitting the room in two. On the sides of the room were broken white, stone tiles that fit with the arched roof in the same color. At the center of the room, above the wooden floor was a deeper arch from the same wood. Lots of steel beams were holding everything together. Opposite from the door was a massive window that filled out the full width of the room with a desk in front of it. On the left was a large king size bed, while on the right you could find a sort of dinner table with fresh looking fruits and two chairs. In the far corner, I saw the important glamour dresser and the armoires--storage cabinets. Al just like in the game.
"Is there somewhere that I can take a bath here?" I asked the maid.
"There is, miss Suzume, at the end of this hallway you will find the door to the bathhouse. You can wash yourself there. There are baskets there with towels in them, you can put your clothes in those baskets a well. The bathhouse is open all day, so please enjoy it to your heart's content."
Nodding, I entered the room and thanked the maid for her service.
"Damn this room is big. It looked big in the game but, being here, damn."
The glamour dresser had a large mirror on it. When I saw it, I got really curious about what I looked like. The only time I saw myself from another perspective, was on the ship when I saw myself being pulled out of the water with the echo.
I walked over to the mirror and was in awe. The character I made in the game was really me now. She was really beautiful. A lot more than with the in-game graphics. But we have the equivalent of photorealistic graphics now. That changes the whole perception of this world and everything in it.
Ok, I might fall in love with myself if this keeps going.
I pulled myself away from the mirror and decide there was no getting around it. I had to take a shower. The sweat had built up during the day and I could hardly meet my new friend in this state tomorrow. So I gathered my courage and made my way to the bathhouse.
After spending about 45 min in there, I arrived back in my room. My face was again as red as Rolanberry. It was a completely new dimension I had never thought I would find myself in. There was no way of knowing how long I would be here so I would do well to get used to all of this, and fast.
The whole day was now taking its tole on me. Waking up on a ship, starting my ways as an Arcanist, the training, and just now... well lets leave it at that. It was time to get to bed and hope to god I wake up in time tomorrow.
I climbed on the massive bed and laid on my back when I noticed my tail being in the way. Which was also the first time it got my attention. During the shower, I was so flustered that I rushed through all the steps and got out of there. Now I was alone and found laying on my back to be... okay. The main headache was the horns.
The horns on Au Ra, as far as I read in the documentation, were used as the ears. They were very sensitive to sound but also to aether. They horns make it so I would be able to sense aetheric fluctuations. I have no idea how that would feel though. The thing right now was that my horns, that pointed backwards, were a pain in the butt to sleep with. Eventually I found a good way to deal with them and fell fast asleep.
The next morning, I woke up to the sun shining brightly through the window. I had no clue what time it was, but I decided to get up and get some fresh air. I walked out of the inn and was greeted by the clerk at the desk.
"Good morning, miss Suzume. I hope you had a good rest?" He said with a formal but warm tone and smile.
"Yes, thank you. I had a wonderful night's rest."
"That is good to hear. I wish you a wonderful day. If you are tired, you knew where to find us."
I nodded and started to walk away, when I remembered I still had no idea what time it was.
"Sorry, but can I ask what time it is?"
The clerk looked down at something behind the counter before answering.
"It is 10:30 at the moment."
Thanking the clerk, I went towards the bridge near the Tempest Gate, where I would meet my first real friend in this world.
When I reached the bridge, there was hardly anyone near. The sun was shining brightly again and the rays felt comfortably warm on my skin. I sat down against the railing while facing the sun as best as I could. With my eyes closed, I just enjoyed the calm moment.
Relaxed as I was, I was feeling a presence around me. It almost felt like something was keeping an eye on me. Looking around did not give me any hint of anyone being suspicious. Closing my eyes again, I tried to ignore the feeling, when suddenly my world was filled with light. I tried to close my eyes but noticed they were already shut.
Confused, I tried to look in any direction to get rid of the light that was blinding me. After a few seconds though, the light dissipated and I was left floating in dark space with a massive crystal in front of me.
I was in shock, seeing this for the first time in the game was cool enough but this was something completely different.
