After receiving my question the woman stares at me for some time before saying, “These questions of yours are why I have a hard time believing the virtual sleep failed. You might speak in broken sentences, but your questions ask for knowledge not befitting a creature without intelligence.”
After stopping for a moment to let what she just said sink in the women then continues, “As for your question, the answer is that you are a chimera , but clearly you saw that from your status. More precisely you are a creature that we grew using samples taken from three other races. Yes, I did say that we grew you.
So, in a way it is safer to say that rather than being born you were created and the samples that were used in your creation were all high quality beings. Two of these beings belonged to the demon race, one very ancient vampire and the other a very powerful succubus. The sample our lab went through the most hardship to attain however was also used in your creation but some hardship is to be expected when one is trying to obtain usable material from a dragon.
Honestly, had the virtual sleep failed to take root the entire first gen project would have been labeled as a failure, but now we have you. The final specimen created before the first gen was discontinued and the only one to awaken from virtual sleep with any kind of human intelligence.”
Finishing her explanation the woman has worked herself into somewhat of a fervor. That gives me some time to sort out my thoughts while she calms down but I have been given a lot to think about.
My understanding about my race now is that I am a hybrid between a vampire, succubus and a dragon created by these people as some kind of biological weapon. I really want to ask for more information about the races of this world. First, I should figure out what she meant by virtual sleep and she mentioned humans. Having been one myself that statement also peaks my interest.
Now that the woman seems to have calmed down, I ask, “Virtual … sleep? … Humans?”
After hearing my question the woman's eyes seem more amused than before and even the man behind her seems less displeased. Is my question that appealing to them? I think it is a normal thing to ask questions related to things those around you have said.
Cutting off my line of thought the woman answers my question, “The virtual sleep I was referring to is a system we found once we got this facility up and running after discovering it. While we fail to completely understand the virtual sleep system from what we have discovered it inserts the mind into a virtual body. This virtual body is then placed in a recreation of the world before humans were wiped out by the gods. By itself, this system is only useful to study how the humans of this world lived before they were wiped out. However since this system seems to simulate time in the virtual world at a speed sixty times faster than what is experienced outside, then the possibilities broaden.
The first gen were created as an experiment in creating powerful living weapons by mixing strong races and having them live another lifetime in the virtual sleep system. The project, however, had to be discontinued as it was found that the minds of the first specimens to awaken were completely broken from the informational overload they received upon leaving virtual sleep. But unlike the others, your mind appears to have survived and seems, mostly, quite intact. The others would not have even been able to understand anything let alone even attempt to ask questions.”
By now the woman is almost smiling and I guess that is understandable. One of her creations finally turned out to be more than a broken waste of resources. I do find it somewhat disconcerting that she has outright told me that they want to use me as a weapon, but at least that means they will not be disposing of me right away. Then again, even if they did decide to get rid of me there is nothing I can do about it right now. So it’s probably better not to worry about it.
What I can worry about now though is that if what this woman just said is true then the entire one hundred twenty years of my last life has just been one big virtual simulation. I guess some might argue that none of it was real at all. The way I see it though, as the person that lived those one hundred twenty years, is that each and every one of those years was real. While I may have lived them in a virtual body it was still my mind so for me each and every one of those years was real, but putting aside the questions about my supposed virtual life being an actual life or not. What did she mean by the system simulating a world before humans were wiped out by the Gods?
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
I have my next question in mind and I decide to ask, “Humans … wiped … out?”
The woman has much more than just a hint of a smile now as she says, “Yes I was right about you. These aren’t the questions of a two year old who understands nothing and though I can’t be sure how much of your experience in the virtual sleep you remember you definitely remember enough of it. As for your question, the history lesson will have to be drawn out over the next few days. You will also need some intense physical therapy over these next few day to get you accustomed to moving your body. Not to mention that we need some time to process our findings and you need time to carefully think over everything you have learned today.”
With those final words, the woman turns around and ushers everyone out of the room. Being left alone I take the time to sort my thoughts and figure out what questions to ask next time I get the chance.
Now that all that initial excitement has passed it helps me realize how tired I actually am. After trying for a while I finally find a comfortable position to sleep in with these darn wings. Another question added to the list of things to ask I guess. Can these darn things be retracted somehow because they are very much in the way. Questions for later however as the darkness of sleep starts to take over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So it has now been a few days since I first woke up in this body. I still don’t know the name of the woman who was there when I first woke up and currently appears to be assigned the task of caring for me. However, the woman has stayed true to her word. Along with a full course of rather intense exercises to help me acclimate to my body she has taught me quite a bit about the history of this world and its people.
First, I have learned that the planet we are on indeed is still Earth. Only, it is Earth at least ten thousand years after the life I experienced in virtual sleep simulation. There are a few major differences between earth this current Earth and the virtual earth I lived in. One of the first differences would be that at some point in time all the continents coalesced into one mega continent. The extinction of the human race is also another major difference and following that the birth of new humanoid races, dragons, and monsters. Finally, the biggest difference between this Earth and the virtual Earth I lived on is the presence of mana.
briefly reviewing the history I have learned thus far.
Eight thousand years ago humans angered the Gods to such a point that the Gods decided to wipe out the entirety of humanity. This god born cataclysm used a colossal amount of mana which in turn commenced the world's own mana production. Now that the planet had its own ambient mana supply this mana slowly started to permeate into the plants, animals, and stones.
After another thousand years, or so humanoids started to appear due to the overwhelming amount of excess mana collecting in the plants, animals, and stones. The beastmen race born from the animals, the elvish race born from the plants, the dwarvish race born from the stones and the demon race born from the mana itself. Humanoids, however, were not the only ones given form by the mana.
Monsters also came about from all the rampant energies and unlike their humanoid counterparts they only seek to kill and destroy. Though from monsters, a form of intelligent life was also born, dragons. Dragons seem to be pretty much classified as natural disasters on an international level. Normally, the dragons do not meddle in the affairs of the humanoid races, but when provoked they have been known to wreak havoc on entire nations to sate their anger.
Honestly, to think that all this actually happened is quite interesting, but the best thing I learned about is the existence of magic. Not only does magic exist, but today is the day I get to learn how to use it.

A/N: I had forgotten how short these earlier chapters were since later ones slowly ended up doubling in size. Anyways tomorrow will be two chapters, possibly three if you count a .5 as a chapter in itself... so maybe more of a 2 and a half.
