Better Stay Alive
The Days We Lost

The Days We Lost

Day 1.

It was the end. Well, maybe not at that moment, but it was slowly approaching. The siblings were not ready for what was yet to come. No one was. Stories of the living dead circulated around the world, but no one believed that such an apocalypse could actually happen because why should it?

On that day, September 4, 2023, a young boy was preparing for his first day of school after the summer break. He was admittedly starting his last class so he had to study harder. He woke up in the morning without any desire to get up, in other words, as usual. "And again...," he sighed protractedly. He went straight to the bathroom to freshen up and when he did, he went down the stairs a floor below to prepare breakfast. The boy lived in a single-family house in a small village near a city in Poland. One could say that he lived in the middle of nowhere, it was not residential heights. His sister Kaja, who was four years younger, entered the kitchen, a petite little girl with disheveled dark hair a little above her shoulders. She sat at the table, sleepy and barely making contact.

"Are they gone?" she asked, looking out into the hallway with one eye.

"Who? The parents? Dad is in the garage. Mom is working today." He replied, redirecting his gaze to her. "I'm making scrambled eggs."

The girl grabbed the TV remote control, flipping channels one by one, while nodding at her brother's words. She was not picky, but eggs were not her favorite dish. Still, she tried not to sound offensive. On television boredom according to Kaya; cartoons, boring series, news. One piece of information, on the other hand, caught Emil's attention.

"...A man bit off the face of a homeless man. This is no joke, to say the least. A murder with particular cruelty took place on a housing estate in Gdansk, according to investigators, the victim was alive when the act was committed. It is suspected that this was the result of taking-"

Emil snatched the remote control from Kai's hand and turned off the TV. He quickly distracted her by placing a plate of scrambled eggs under her nose. He himself also sat down at the table, starting the meal. The boy's pulse quickened, reflecting on what he had just heard.

"Is something wrong?" The blond felt the girl's gaze on him. He reciprocated it, looking at her worriedly.

"I don't know... No." He assured after a while. "I just think too much."

"Are you sure?" she inquired.

"Yes... have you perhaps heard of zombies?"

"And who hasn't heard?" a piece of scrambled egg slid into her mouth from her fork. She swallowed preceding it with a long silence of awkward staring at each other with her brother. "So what?"

"Never mind. It's just my stupid head."

Silence ensued, punctuated by the mewling of both siblings. They ate their meal in silence, not feeling the need to discuss anything. Emil felt a slight uneasiness, but he dismissed the feeling with thoughts of school, which caused a twist in his stomach. He had disliked school since he was a child, but was glad that it was finally his last year.

"We should go, Kaja. It starts in 30 minutes." she said. Emil urged her after she ate, checking the time. The clock showed twenty minutes past eight and that meant it would be a good idea to hurry if they wanted to make it in time.

"You don't have to remind me." She answered him wearily.

They got dressed and left the house. Emil took the girl by the hand after the young one felt like stroking a stray dog and took her to the garage. They went inside. They were greeted by their father, Nikolai Kaczmarek, finishing tightening the wheel on the car.

"Are you ready yet?" He asked, opening the car door and getting in.

The siblings got into the car. "Yes." They said in unison.

And they drove out of the property onto the main road. Emil had the news of the cannibalistic incident in his head, and wondered what it was about. The subject of zombies was no stranger to him, he was even a fan, and a bunch of theories immediately formed in his head. "I'm exaggerating." - he thought, noticing after a while a neighbor out of the corner of his eye - Robert. The man

"Have you heard about what they say on TV?"

"Not really. Why?"

The father glanced out of the corner of his eye at his son, squeezing the steering wheel tightly and returning his gaze to the street in a moment.

"Never mind." He sighed deeply, closing his eyes. "It's probably nothing."

Several minutes later, the siblings and their father arrived in front of the school. A sizable three-story building full of evenly spaced windows was fenced in at the front with a solid fence and a second building behind it. People were already gathering in the main square, although some still remained in front of the building, relaxing on benches and talking among themselves. There were only five minutes left before the start. The youngsters, however, went behind the school, or more precisely to the small square where the assembly was to begin. For young Kaya, this was her first year at a new school after elementary school. Emil led her to her peers and went to his friends himself, although in his case there are few to speak of here. Because of his introversion, he had trouble making friends with new people. Walking at a brisk pace, as the headmaster was just beginning his speech, he suddenly felt a poke in his back. He turned around and saw his friend Marcel, almost equal in height, an unremarkable dark-haired boy with a samurai haircut.

"Howdy!"

"Oh. Hi. What are you sneaking around for?" He slightly flinched after his surprise "attack".

"Because you're always afraid." he snorted with laughter, seeing the look on Emil's face.

"Very funny."

He stood in silence for a moment, waiting for his friend to stop choking on laughter. In the meantime, Emil listened to what the director was saying. These were little things, rules repeated year after year that no one listened to. His attention was drawn to the strange behavior of one boy several meters away. He was coughing non-stop, mumbling something under his breath, and looked as if he was about to fly away. This worried him mainly because Kaja was next to him.

"What's up?" Marcel asked. He noticed the concern on Emil's face.

The kid suddenly fell to the ground, losing consciousness. Several teachers gathered around him, checking on his condition. They thought it was nothing serious, he might just have been overheated. The teacher, a bald guy, picked him up. And they disappeared into the crowd, the event resumed but something strange hung in the air.

After the school year commencement ceremony, everyone was to go to their rooms. On the way, Marcel told Emil to calm down. "You're exaggerating," he kept saying. Maybe so. Emil thought, glancing out of the corner of his eye at Kaja walking away classily.

But what if...?

><

The boy was in class, sitting next to his best friend, Marcel. The teacher's voice jolted him out of his thoughts, school nonsense was not on his mind now. The meeting did not last long, but was prolonged by Emil's impatience. Every minute felt like an eternity. Suddenly, the blond felt a vibration on his phone. Instantly, he reached into his pocket with his hand and pulled out the device and the screen displayed a message from his younger sister. The content was disturbing, as the girl asked him to come get her because she was sitting hidden in the bathroom. This confirmed Emil's fears and without asking, he slipped out of the room on the pretext of using the toilet. He dashed to the front door in a flash. He passed many students, teachers and other school staff on his way out. He walked down from the second floor, avoiding people's eyes. He walked, or even ran, out of the building and, without hesitating, walked briskly to the main building, right at the entrance to the school grounds. He opened the door, the entrance corridor was empty. Emil took out his phone from the back pocket of his pants. He sent a short message to his sister to find out exactly which restroom she was in. Moments later, he received a reply and headed toward the stairs, passing empty hallways. Before he reached them, however, he had to pass by the nurse's room. He stopped, recalling what had happened a moment ago. He looked down, under the door, and saw a bloodstain oozing from the depths of the room. It was ajar. At first he wanted to go in and check, but anxiety dissuaded him from doing so. He was confused.

"Am I dreaming?"

In fact, the whole day had been strange. As if it were a daydream from which it is hard to wake up. Small blood stains on the floor led up the stairs. Without thinking any longer, he continued up to the second floor. He constantly felt an uneasiness that increased with every step he took. He felt alone despite the fact that there were people in the halls next door. He could hear people's voices, but something was wrong. He felt that something evil was prowling the area. He walked tentatively into the women's bathroom, listening in beforehand. He looked out cautiously, catching the doorframe with his hand. Empty. Kaja should be in one of the cubicles, but why did she hide? This kept the boy's head busy. He approached the cabins with a shaking step.

"Kaja, are you here?" he whispered. The echo of these words spread through the room.

"Here." the girl answered after a moment of silence just as quietly.

Emil approached the cabin and waited for her to open the door. The girl sat on the closed flap of the toilet, frightened as if she had at least seen a ghost. Probably not what she had expected during her first day of school. Seeing her older brother calmed down, however, she put a finger to her lips signaling him to be quiet.

"What's wrong, Kaja?"

"It was Nikodem... he was acting strangely.

- W-What? - he stammered. All the pieces of the puzzle began to make sense and fall into place. - That boy the teachers took away? What about him?

"He walked towards me slowly and strangely, like some kind of creep. But I managed to escape him."

"Was he here? Did you hear him?"

"No. I mean..." she fell silent for a while, collecting her thoughts. "I heard footsteps so he probably looked here, but he went on."

"Come on. We're going home, right now."

Grabbing his sister's hand, he pulled her out of the cabin, hastily making his way to the corridor. They walked for a few seconds when suddenly the boy heard a grunt. He stopped himself and her, in a daze looking around the corner. He then saw the same boy the teachers had taken earlier. Emil looked at him, his anxiety intensifying until it finally accumulated in that one moment. He already knew it was no joke when the boy's entire left hand was in blood.

"Hey, man. Are you okay?" He asked, not actually expecting any answer.

A frightened Kaja looked at her friend from behind Emil's back. The boy was slowly approaching the two siblings, his hair falling, covering practically his entire face. When he got close enough, Emil reflexively grabbed him, holding him down. A strange odor emanated from him and the retinas of his eyes were completely white. Emil's eyes widened in surprise; he wasn't wrong, for once his premonitions came true. The boy pushed Nicodemus away so that he fell over.

"Kaja, call our parents and go outside!" as he ordered, so she did. The girl ran and Emil, losing concentration, was attacked from behind by Nikodem. The boy had the advantage in strength, he managed to defend himself, holding Nikodem. He hit the boy in the face with his fist. This, however, did nothing, he stood still. Not knowing what to do next, he simply wanted to run away, but at the last moment he caught sight of a fire extinguisher, hanging on the wall. He grabbed the handle and jerked with all his strength, taking it off the wall. He weighed the extinguisher in his hand and took a deep breath, calming his nerves. He made a strong blow to his head, a bang sounded throughout the corridor. The youngster fell to the ground, grunting strangely. A teacher came out of Kaja's classroom, who, seeing the incident, began to shout.

"What are you doing to him!" she ran up to Nikodem, who was lying on the ground, and took a quick glance at the wound on his head. She looked again at Emil.

"Do not go near him!"

"I will report this to the head teacher! You will be thrown out-"

Before she could finish, Nikodem grabbed her and bit into her neck. A scream could be heard throughout the school, blood was pouring in streams, gushing from the teacher's windpipe. She tried to break free, but was brought to the floor by him. People ran out of the classrooms, who did not know what was happening. Some tried to help, others ran away and others stood as if they were stunned. Emil did not hesitate. He immediately darted toward the stairs, looking for his sister. "I knew it. Fuck, I knew it!" Flustered, he ran down to the first floor where the chaos caused by the screams was already underway. No one knew quite what was happening because it was too sudden and shocking. Emil, trying to keep a cool head walked out of the school, looking for his sister with his eyes. Kaya was standing with her phone in her hand, apparently having heard the teacher's scream because she stared out the school windows. She spotted her brother so she ran up to him asking what was going on. Emil didn't know what to answer her, how was he supposed to tell her that probably dead people don't die? This is ridiculous.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

"Come on." He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the school gate to escape. "Did you call your parents?"

"Yes. Dad didn't know what it was about, but he said he would come." She stopped, lightly pulling her brother by his shirt. Terrified, she showed him with her finger to the other end of the street, where the path between the buildings runs.

Several of the "infected" were walking down the street. They behaved in a manner similar to Nicodemus, there was no doubt. They seemed to be walking towards the noise from the school. Noticing the siblings, they accelerated slightly which intensified their terror. Police sirens howled in alarm as the services began intervening after the first calls. The city even went crazy. Minute by minute, people were beginning to realize what was happening. Dead people were everywhere, although there weren't that many yet. Somewhere in the distance a car hit a building, dodging a living corpse.

"Is this some kind of fucking dream?" - took the girl and they ran back to the school grounds, trying to close the gate somehow, but they had no key or tool with which to lock it. The zombies were approaching, by a hair's breadth Kaya avoided being grabbed by the hair by a corpse hand. Holding the wicket did nothing, the siblings had to retreat. At the same time, students and several teachers ran out of the school. They did not expect a confrontation and panicked. Everyone scattered, looking for an alternative escape route. Emil pulled Kaya's eyes away from the situation, but he didn't know what to do next. Everything was happening too fast, and they had no way to defend themselves from the threat. The only thing left was to escape, but to where?

"Emil! Over here!"

The boy turned around and there, a few meters away along the path to the other building stood Marcel. Without thinking, Emil decided to run to his friend with his sister.

"What the hell is going on here?" Marcel asked with horror in his voice, running at a jog to the second school building. Emil and Kaja matched his pace.

"I don't know. I told you something was wrong."

They ran past the windows and at that moment one of the corpses hit the glass with a loud bang, giving the teenagers the creeps.

"We should get out of here!" Marcel hissed, seeing his friend instead of along the path run to the stairs leading to the door.

"We can't. We have to wait with Kaja for our dad and there may be more of them outside."

"So you prefer to be locked in one building with... them? People behave strangely, you've seen for yourself!"

"They are no longer people, Marcel." replied Emil, tugging on the door handle. The school was no longer safe, but they nevertheless took a chance and ran through the front door into the technical school building. After crossing the threshold, they mindlessly ran inside, disregarding the possible death around the corner. However, it was relatively quiet. Considering the presence of undead in the rest of the building, they immediately headed to the floor where their friends had previously stayed with their class. They walked slowly, listening for footsteps and carefully leaning out of every corner. Kaya was terrified, and so were Emil and Marcel, but it was most evident from her when she started to get steamed up. The blond stopped immediately, kneeling in front of her and looking her straight in the eyes. He tried to calm her down, knowing full well Kaya's stress problems. She had had them for a long time, but never as critical as at that moment. The girl momentarily froze in place. Wanting to reassure her, Emil lightly patted her cheeks.

"Kaja. Kaja!" the boy pulled her close and embraced her tenderly. "It will be fine. We'll go home. Dad is already coming to pick us up, right? Calm down, please..."

From the corridor suddenly came a girlish voice, familiar to them. As if the apocalypse and one girl to look after weren't enough, she had to appear as well. Laura. The president of Emil's class, always smiling and cheerful, but now completely unlike herself. The fear and confusion in her eyes overshadowed her teenage spirit and this worked on Emil the most. The moment he saw her, he knew he wouldn't let go. He knew he wouldn't leave until she was safe.

"E-Emil? Marcel?" the red-haired girl stammered, looking out from around the corner. Innocence even poured from that delicate face. Completely unaware, she remained in the school while the rest had already evacuated.

The boys exchanged glances, silently negotiating who would give the girl information about the apocalypse. Before anyone could string a sentence together, however, the door of the floor below opened and a moment later a woman's screams and cries for help could be heard. Emil ran quickly down to the mezzanine floor, but didn't dare move further. All he could see was a pair of hands desperately trying to grab onto anything and a moment later the face of another classmate as she pushed the corpses away, wanting to escape. Unfortunately, it was too late for her, she lost her strength, bleeding out. The corpses were eating her to the bone and she was already just lying there, looking at Emil in fear. His legs softened having this sight before his eyes. He gathered himself to vomit. Gritting his teeth, he ran back upstairs, but the zombies heard him. A handful of them frantically rushed after him up the stairs. The others, alarmed by the bumping of the corpses against each other and their hooting, tried to escape, but there were even more from the depths of the corridor. The dead entered the building from the emergency entrance, which was open, and completely cut them off from the escape route. Marcel shouted to run upstairs and so they did. They rushed at breakneck speed, wanting to survive.

"Why there are so many of them already!?"

"I don't know!"

They lacked time to think. Escape, that was all that mattered. They ran upstairs, with a deadly pursuit on their tail. In the narrow corridor it was beginning to get too cramped for the four survivors so they decided it would be better to hide in one of the halls. Unfortunately for them, many of them were locked. While the rest were ahead, Laura stopped on the last step, staring dully at the corpses. She still didn't understand what was happening. She thought it was just a bad dream, but she was wrong.

"Ey!"

Emil shouted to the girl, stopping, pressing his heel against the floor. He instantly turned around, running to Laura. The zombie came within an arm's length of the redhead, and only then did her survival instinct hit her, but she reacted too late. It would have been all over her, but Emil pushed her straight against the door, which opened, saving her from the corpse's teeth. After falling, he got up quickly, closing the door and hid behind the teacher's desk with the girl. He did not close the door and only managed to close it slightly, which of course did not stop the dead from entering. The improvisation paid off, however, as the corpses seemed unaware of Emil and Laura's position, although it was still dangerous by the mere fact that they were in the same room.

"Laura, you have to listen to me." he lowered his voice, jamming the redhead's mouth with his hand. The girl looked fearfully into Emil's eyes. She did not scream. She fought with all her strength not to scream. "People don't die. They... They turn into zombies."

He dragged the last word to resound in her head. That was all he could tell her because they were in a life-threatening situation where the slightest rustling could decide whether they would become dinner for the dead. They couldn't stay here, Emil's goal was to get to his sister and friend. Every second reduced their chances of escaping the room so they had to make a decision. The boy, however, was concerned about Laura's condition, who might have trouble escaping. He looked deep into the room, stretching his head upward. There were two corpsmen, one of whom had spotted the two students. The blond man quickly grabbed Laura's hand and pulled her towards the door. The other zombie inside the room also focused on the fugitives and the chase began. Laura, running out of the hall, would have nearly collided with the corpse, but avoided its grasp. They ran ahead along the narrow corridor, looking for Marcel and Kaja with their eyes. At that moment Emil regretted that they did not try to force their way down until he heard a door opening behind his back. His friend grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him into the room along with Laura then closed the door.

"Quick, help me!" he said, grabbing the bench and pulling it toward the door.

Emil helped him immediately. They also put a few chairs on the bench, making sure that even if the door was broken down they would still have time to escape. But where to?

"We're screwed. We're going to die." Marcel grabbed his head, sitting down on the floor. His legs were shaking with fear, his body began to feel the effects of stress as the adrenaline began to drain. They didn't know what to do, they were trapped. The undead were pushing against the closed door, trying to break it open. The pounding echoed throughout the floor. They felt like they were the last people in this city, maybe even in the whole world. The moans of the corpses drove them crazy, just that sound over and over again. The same incessant sound. Kaja began to cry, holding her brother tightly by his shirt.

"There must be a way out of here." Laura howled in a whisper, moving away from the door.

"If you can fly then go ahead, there are windows there. We are on the second floor!" growled Marcel in nerves, unintentionally raising his voice.

Indeed, they were on the second floor, although that's an understatement. This part of the building stood on high foundations so it was slightly higher. Whether the fall would be fatal or not, by far the last thing they needed was a dislocated or broken leg. Everyone was losing hope. All except young Kaczmarek.

"Let's use scaffolding." he commented briefly, seeing the unremoved remnants of the renovations a piece from the window. Attached right next to the wall, they could have been the perfect escape route.

Marcel ran over to his friend, opening the window wide open, looking over the scaffolding.

"What if someone falls?" he asked.

"You can stay here and ask the zombies about it once they force the door." he replied briefly. He slid a chair under the window as support and climbed onto the windowsill. His legs trembled when he looked down. "Mhm..."

"He has a fear of heights." Kaja commented after which her gaze traveled to the door where the corpses were still banging on it. They already had dents on them, signaling a simple message: Hurry the fuck up.

"Well, no shit!" Annoyed, Marcel threw a fast one, trying to hurry up his friend.

"Shut up! I can do it!"

Emil stretched out his leg, wanting to hook his foot on the platform. It took him several attempts, but finally succeeded. Now all he had to do was.

"No. I won't be able to do it." He closed his eyes, holding his breath. He clenched his hand on the window frame as hard as he could.

"I'm about to push you out of this window. Move your ass!" Marcel continued, emotions taking over the young boy's mind.

The blond man sighed deeply, trying to control his heartbeat. He broke through and pushed himself away from the window, jumping straight onto the scaffolding platform. He wobbled, but kept his balance, immediately catching one of the pipes. Life flew before his eyes, but this was no time for cowardice. Emil's sister was next. The girl jumped onto the windowsill and looked at her brother. She trusted him and without hesitation extended her hand toward him. The boy caught her, helping her climb onto the platform. She succeeded and at that moment they heard a crack in the hall. The corpses burst through the door and, having crossed the threshold, fell to the floor. This gave them time to act and mobilized them. Marcel helped Laura to Emil's side and grabbed his friend's hand in a flash himself. He felt a corpse's breath on the back of his neck which made his blood freeze and he took a leap, but something pulled him down. It was a zombie that grabbed Marcel and fell out the window. Emil miraculously grabbed Marcel's hand as he dangled over the precipice along with the undead. It was hard for him to hold on to his friend, given the fact of the extra weight of the zombie. The risk of death was great, Emil did his best not to let go of that hand.

"Don't you dare throw me off!" shouted to Emil, seeing only the paws of the undead sticking out of the window, wanting to get at the young man. He looked down at his leg, the zombie tried to pull himself up and bite him, but the boy then kicked him in the head. The corpse, however, did not give up. Marcel knew him. They may not have been the best of colleagues, but he was still someone who not long ago was a vivacious boy and all that was left of him was a living corpse. "...I'm sorry."

He hit him with his shoe once again, causing the zombie to let go of Marcel and fall to the very bottom. Emil sighed in relief, feeling less weight. He clamped his hand on the scaffolding pipe and pulled his friend up after which, without a moment's rest, they joined Kaya and Laura, who were already standing on the roof a floor below. Emil sat on the cobblestones heated from the sun. They were thinking about what to do next. The situation may have been under control, but there was still a huge risk. It was relatively quiet on this side of the school. People had clustered elsewhere or had long since fled. The four survivors looked after each other in silence until the silence was broken by the loud sound of Laura's ringing phone.

"H-Hey! Mom?" she answered in a panic, without even checking the number. "Yes. But you have to be careful because..."

Unexpectedly, the entire city sounded the EAS alarm. The constant siren gave the teens the creeps, Laura fumed. The sound was so loud that it could probably be heard from miles away. Police helicopters were already circling in the sky and, in addition to the alarm, the sound of vehicles at a signal brought the city to life.

"What... what's going on?!" Kaja shouted covering her ears with her hands.

"The city has responded to the apocalypse!" Emil, like the rest, echoed Kaja's action. "The longer we are here the worse it gets for us!"

Laura communicated incompetently with her mother on the phone and when Emil looked at her, she hung up and stood up, walking up to him with a quick step and leaning into his ear.

"My mom will be here soon! I have to get out of here!" she shouted.

Emil turned around, looking straight at the parking area. It was not far away. He ran to the edge of the roof and looked out, looking for any way to get down to the ground. On one side, opposite the parking lot, was a tall dumpster that they could use. Out of the corner of his eye, the blond man cast a fleeting glance at the rest and simply knelt down, preparing to jump. This time he managed to control his emotions and did it gracefully. He put his foot on the flap from the dumpster and looked around some more, searching with his eyes for danger. The strong sun made it impossible for him to see anything from a distance, but a few meters away walked the infected boy from earlier, thrown from a height by Marcel. His head was unnaturally bent by the fact that he had fallen straight on his neck, which he had broken. Emil urged Kaya quickly, whom he embraced as she sat on the edge of the roof, and took her in his arms, helping her stand on the dumpster. They jumped off it straight to the ground. The EAS alarm did not stop transmitting which gave the group a headache. The last to descend was Marcel, whom the corpse spotted starting a slow march toward the survivors. The boy raised his voice to the rest, telling them to hurry up. They ran at breakneck speed, staying as far away from the infected as possible. After a few minutes, they arrived at the door of the dormitory, past which there was a straight path to the exit to the parking lot. Inside the building, the silhouette of a short, black-haired boy could be seen in the distance behind the glass window. He wandered down the hallway alone, crying.

"Hey, is that Erik?" Marcel asked, spotting a classmate in the building.

"Marcel, no. We have to get out of here!"

Despite Emil's warnings, Marcel crossed the threshold of the building. At the same moment Emil wanted to run in after him, but two infected emerged from around the corner.

"Oh shit!" He covered the girls reflexively. He shouted to Marcel to run, it was all he could do. They were cut off from each other, so the only thing left for the siblings and Laura was to run away. Emil grabbed his sister's arm again and they ran at a fast sprint to the back gate of the school, which was not that far away. The infected were not very fast; with a run they could be far ahead of them. The gate, as usual, remained open without interruption, they had an easy way out. At the same moment as they were leaving the school grounds, Kaja received a phone call from her father.

"Dad?"

"Dad." He took the phone from his sister quickly. "Drive to the parking lot behind the school, quickly. I'll explain everything to you."

A moment passed. The infected lost sight of their siblings. They were lucky that the area behind the school was always deserted, even during the apocalypse. One police patrol stopped quite close, the whine of the signal was loud. Emil surmised that the patrol drove up to the school, it worried him because Marcel remained in that area and they could consider him infected. Despite this, there was neither time nor opportunity to return for him. Laura was escorted to her mother's car, which was parked with the engine turned off. Laura thanked Emil, giving him a friendly hug. He and Kaja were also offered a ride, but there was no need because a moment later a silver SUV pulled up in the parking lot, it was their father's car. They said goodbye and went their separate ways. The siblings quickly got into the car, Emil told his father to drive home as soon as possible, seeing through the window as the infected emerged from behind the gate.

"Emil, what's going on!" looked at his son confused, changing gears in the car.

"Drive!" shouted upset by the situation, begging his father to finally move. "Damn it, Marcel..."

"Emil! Will you tell me what's going on?"

The boy does not know what to say. He looked at his sister through the front mirror, sitting in silence for a while, watching her. Finally, he gathered his thoughts in his head, although they made no sense at first.

"The dead... are not dead."
