Chapter 3: Switching the Battleground

Chapter 3: Switching the Battleground

No reinforcement ever arrived in the hours following the fight.

After a quick nap. I was fresh and relaxed. It was still just near the evening and the sun was going to sleep soon, but not me. It was time to hunt them once and for good.

I didn’t mind a good battle, but after today, they won’t underestimate me anymore and will come with everything they got. I was almost overwhelmed last time, and it was going to get worse. Unless they leave me alone for at least a week for me to train my magic, I’m as good as dead.

Each time they came from the north, their nest should be in that direction.

I jumped from tree to tree, using vines to swing myself deeper into the forest and further away from my clearing.

At some point, spider webs were trapping the area. Making sure to be as stealthy as I could, I made my way deeper into their territory. I spotted a few Shooters, some roaming around, others carrying web cocoons back from where they came.

I followed them to the centre of their nest. Their webs were starting to be everywhere, on the ground, and in the trees. It was getting harder and harder to avoid getting stuck and found out.

Luckily, the trees and roots were still telling me everything was clear from spiders above the ground level.

Going on a rampage in the middle of their territory was pointless, I needed an objective. Either destroying their eggs or killing whatever was responsible for making them in the first place.

I thought I spotted just that, its size was four times my own, and it was resting as if waiting for something. With all the surroundings eggs, it seemed to be on top of the hierarchy. What should I call it? Broodmother? Spider queen? Anyway, it would soon be dead, one way or another.

Now, how could I kill this thing? A surprise attack was given and from my spot in the tree, I didn’t think they will ever see me, so I could wait as long as I wanted. The main problem was the number of spiders. I couldn't even count how many Spitters and Shooters there were.

After more observation, a plan came to mind, with a bloodthirsty smile. It was time to get creative. I waited till it was completely dark.

I started by making as big an earthquake as possible, far from the centre of their nest, but still in their territory. The amount of effort it took me to shake and move all the roots in the area was enormous, but after seeing the number of spiders going that way to check it out, it was worth it.

When the queen was alone with her guard, about 10 of each spider type. I made my move using a brand-new technique.

In seconds, multiple wooden spikes came out of the ground just under their feet, impaling the Spitters and Shooters without resistance. Most of the Reapers were still alive, with only a crack in their armour. From the damage, the queen took, her armour was the same as the Reaper's, her sheer size was what made her take less damage overall.

Now they were on guard but still didn’t know where I was.

I assaulted them with more spikes, I was not going to expose myself as long as they didn't find me.

I could see the anger in their behaviour each time the queen was bleeding from a new injury. How cruel, they don’t care if their brothers died, but if the queen is in danger it was the end of the world.

How heartless of them, but don’t worry, I am justice incarnate and all of these spiders will be treated equally when they are all dead.

The battle must have attracted some reinforcements because more spiders were coming to get their own spike.

It was almost relaxing, hearing the cry of deadly spiders, music to my ears. It was an honest payback for all the trouble I got into cleaning their mess in the clearing. My acid scar still tingled a little when I touched it, and a few cuts still hadn't healed yet.

For the potentially permanent damage they did to me, I sentenced them to death. What a pitiful fate I have, my bedridden princess beauty was ruined because of them.

“Ruin them all!!!” I screamed internally.

At that point, the number of corpses was cramping the place, as even more spiders were joining the rampage.

“Finally found me,” I said as a Reaper cut the branch I was sitting on since the start. It took them a while to find me. "This is where the fun begins."

I produced a wooden sword from a tree and started to slash at them. It wasn’t as sharp as a real metallic sword and with its extremely thin edge, it would break quickly. No problem, though, I just made a new one each time one was broken.

With me joining the fight directly, I couldn’t produce as many spikes as before due to the concentration required. I made sure to compensate for that properly.

Even the queen started to spit acid at me while keeping her distance with a wall of webs. So she had all the same abilities as her children, meaning her front legs were probably as sharp as the Reaper. Lucky me, she didn't want to use them.

After smashing a Reaper with my now-broken sword, something came to mind. I am strong, aren’t I?

I mean physically. I got good stamina that allowed me to fight for longer than I thought. Not only that, but I am strong enough to use a wooden sword with no difficulty and even kill a spider. Whenever I dodge or jump, I feel light. Just what in the world am I? Am I still human?

Anyway, it was not the time to think about that stuff, it was time to kill the queen, my existential crisis could come later.

If she didn't want to come closer, then that's fine, I just send more spikes her way. Even better!

It was still not enough though, if all my attacks came from the ground it was too easy to dodge for her. Throwing spears was now added to my instant to-do list in the fight.

Her number of injuries was now as much as the number of dead spiders on the ground. A lot, and it kept climbing.

At this point, I hated to admit it, but I was getting overwhelmed. With all the corpses and webs around, my movement was limited. I was so soaked in blood, not my own, that I had to be careful of my footing to avoid slipping up. In terms of Stamina, I was fine, but I wouldn’t last forever.

Some of them were even hiding behind corpses, ready to ambush me when I got close. Without knowing their position with my roots, I would be dead.

"I need to finish this." I rushed toward the queen, as she tries to run away from me. Swinging from vine to vine, I was faster than her and got a proper sword cut on her back.

The shriek she let out was so high-pitched that I had to cover my ear.

It was getting dangerous! Too dangerous! The roots were telling me that, literally, all the spiders in the forest were coming this way. All of them! More than … three hundred!!!

She did not let out a cry of pain, but a cry for help, that bitch!

It even seemed like the morale or more precisely the anger of the spiders already present was even greater.

I focused my offence on her as I slashed her abdomen to shreds.

With my guard down, I let out a cry of pain as a Reaper made a big diagonal slash on my back, shattering what was left of my armour. Fortunately, he didn’t get deep enough to reach my spine, but I made sure to give him back an even deeper one.

Now exhausted, bleeding, and with mana running low. My odds of winning were slim. Running away was impossible with all the spiders coming this way, and even if I could get away they would probably chase me to the end of the world.

Killing that cowardly queen was my only hope.

“ROOAAAAAARR”

In the melee, I heard a roar, it was not the queen or any spiders, scaring even them.

“ROOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRR”

Looking around me, I couldn't see its origin. The roots were locating only spiders and nothing else.

“ROOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRR”

It was getting louder, now closer to us. Even the spiders stopped moving. If it was not on the ground, then…

“ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR”

A giant wyvern was diving into me. Its black scales, almost shining in the dark of the night. Without slowing down, it snatched me in its claws and got back high in the sky.

Before I could register what just happened, we were so high that the fall would kill me. Not that I was able to escape anyway. It was holding my arm tightly in its claws. Making it impossible to escape if I still wanted my arm attached to my body.

The view was beautiful. A massive, colossal, behemoth-sized moon was on the horizon. Its brightness was brighter than turning back on light mode after getting used to dark mode.

With so much light shining during the night, it was no wonder that I could still see so well, even at this hour.

There were other flying islands populating the sky, too many to count them. Mine was getting smaller and smaller in the distance. I couldn't say at what altitude we were, except that it was very, very high.

After a moment we were above a sea of clouds. There were fewer floating islands than below, but the view kept getting more impressive, making me forget everything that was happening just a few minutes ago. The pain of the laceration in my back felt tiny compared to the amazement I was feeling.

For being the hopeless little girl who couldn't leave her room to whatever this world would make of me, that view made it all worth it.

The wyvern kept climbing higher toward a small island, looking different from the others.

On it was a huge stone tower, the height of a lighthouse. A greenhouse was also there, with a house and a small lake.

This place was inhabited by someone. Everything except the tower was way too small to be for the wyvern. It deposited me on top of the tower and sat on a trap door.

For the next few hours, it just rested and looked at me with its crimson eyes.

With him blocking the only exit, I was stuck here. If I tried jumping, he would probably catch me back, so I didn’t try.

Fortunately, it didn’t mind me using magic, so I was able to draw water from the lake using magic. With the distance, it took a while for my depleted mana to draw enough water to wash and drink my fill.

My old bra and underwear were in bad shape after what happened, funny enough when I changed my torn ivy undergarment to new ones, the lizard looked away. How chivalrous.

I used leaves as makeshift bandages to cover my cuts and bruises. Most of them would probably heal without leaving any scar, but the one on my back was good to stay, at least it stopped bleeding.

Pulling plants from the closest tree, I took my first meal since I attacked the spider nest. I could have grabbed a few fruits and vegetables from the greenhouse, but depending on who lived here, they might consider this stealing, so better avoid trouble. Especially since they got that big lizard watching me.

Exhausted, I took a nap on the cold stone floor. Whatever it wanted from me, it wasn’t food, so it wouldn’t eat me. I hoped.
