Chapter 20: Fight in the Forest

Chapter 20: Fight in the Forest

The forest stood still as if holding its breath, waiting for the inevitable clash between man and beast. The first move was made by Orion, who, with silent grace, leaped from his hiding spot, aiming for the deer's flank.

The deer, however, was not an ordinary animal. Its cultivated senses immediately picked up on Orion's approach. With a swift turn, it reared on its hind legs, its shimmering antlers gleaming menacingly under the sun, poised for a strike.

Orion, using his cultivated bones, deftly dodged to the side, narrowly evading the antlers. He swung with his makeshift spear, aiming for the deer's side. However, the creature, with its swift reflexes, darted away, the spear merely grazing its fur.

In that moment, Orion felt a pang of longing for his trusty sword. The weight, the balance, the feel of it in his hand - he had trained for years with it. With a sword, he'd have been in his element, but now, with just a stick and stone, the challenge was magnified.

The deer, sensing Orion's momentary distraction, lunged, its antlers aimed straight for his heart. With his enhanced agility, Orion twisted his body, the antlers passing mere inches from him. However, the sheer force behind the deer's charge knocked Orion off his feet, sending him tumbling backward.

He quickly scrambled to his feet, shaking off the impact, thankful for his cultivated bones. Had it been a regular man, that blow would have resulted in broken ribs, if not worse. Orion tightened his grip on his spear, eyes locked onto the deer. It was clear that those antlers were the deer's primary weapon, and they were deadly. A direct hit could puncture his skin and muscles, rendering him defenseless.

With a renewed sense of urgency, Orion circled the beast, looking for an opening. Every time he lunged or feinted, the deer countered, its movements mirroring his own. It was as if the two were engaged in a deadly dance, each step, each move choreographed to perfection.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Then, seizing an opportune moment, Orion hurled the rock in his hand at the deer's face. The creature, momentarily blinded, reared up in surprise and pain. Using this opening, Orion lunged forward, thrusting his spear towards the deer's legs, hoping to immobilize it.

But the deer, even in its surprised state, was not to be underestimated. It twisted mid-air, avoiding a direct hit, though the spear did leave a gash on its hind leg. It landed with a thud, and immediately charged at Orion with renewed fury.

The two clashed again and again, each blow, each dodge pushing them to their limits. Sweat dripped from Orion's brow, his breathing ragged, but his determination unwavering. The deer, despite its injury, fought fiercely, its eyes gleaming with a mix of pain and resolve.

In the midst of their fight, the two found themselves near a large boulder. Seizing the moment, Orion baited the deer, standing in front of the rock. As expected, the deer charged, its antlers aimed straight for him.

With split-second timing, Orion sidestepped, and the deer, unable to stop its momentum, crashed into the boulder. The impact left it stunned, its antlers chipped, its head reeling.

Wasting no time, Orion moved in, delivering a precise strike with his spear to the deer's neck. It was a merciful blow, aimed to end the fight swiftly.

The deer collapsed, its life force ebbing away. As it breathed its last, Orion, panting heavily, dropped to his knees beside it. The weight of the battle, both physical and emotional, pressed down on him.

He had won, but it was a victory that left him with mixed feelings. The deer, with its cultivation, was a magnificent creature, deserving of respect. Yet, the harsh reality of survival had pitted them against each other.

As the forest slowly came back to life around him, Orion took a moment to pay his respects to the fallen beast. Then, with renewed determination, he prepared to head back to Frostbridge, the city that held the keys to his past and, possibly, his future.
