Part Five: About the Kalmark Sultanate

Part Five: About the Kalmark Sultanate

Part Five: About the Kalmark Sultanate

----------------------------------------

About Kalmark Sultanate:

Kalmark Sultanate is known for its beautifully embroidered fabrics. Any linen, silk, or wool fabric will generally be dyed colors and embroidered with colored silks or threads; there are no forbidden colors other than the color purple. Kalmarkian embroidered fabrics are one of the biggest exports in the trade markets. Kalmark is also known for its vibrant and beautiful clothing. Even the face coverings that most people wear (from nobility all the way down to the peasantry) to keep the sand and the sun off the face are decorated.

Most peasants are dark-skinned to tanned-skinned from work in the sun with sun-bleached hair and all eye colors.

Most nobles are light-skinned to tanned-skinned with all hair and eye colors.

All people, no matter their position in life, bathe in a Hammam. It is a bath house with streams of water to collect in a bowl to cleanse with; it also contains pools of cold water to soak in after being cleansed.

Most people travel with camels as Koşmakum horses are very expensive.

There are three goddesses that are worshiped here: The Water Goddess, The Rain Goddess, and the River Goddess. Any praying should be done facing toward the Portam Palace as that is the homeplace of The Water Goddess.

Both fireworks and glassblowing was invented here. The fireworks are made from two relatively unknown minerals that explode quite fiercely when put together and then lit on fire. The glassblowing was done by accident when some potters found a shiny material in their kiln one time after baking pottery.

----------------------------------------

Kalmarkian Harem:

There are many ranks inside the Harem; all women inside the harem are highly trained concubines. The higher in rank a concubine is, the more likely it is for her to spend more time with the Sultan; the higher a concubine is also can be the harder fall if the concubine falls out of favor. A concubine that completely loses favor could be sent to the last palace (without any children) to live out their days in exile. Any concubine above the Hautun rank is considered a favorite concubine and is allowed to live in the favorites quarters (until they get pregnant and move into the Ikabal or Kadin quarters.)

The highest ranking is the Valide Sultana or the Mother of the current Sultan. The second highest is the Bôli Sultana or the top Sultana. The third highest are the Şehzades (the sons of the current and previous Sultan) and Sultanas (the daughter of the current and previous Sultan.); the sons or daughters of the current Sultan are higher in rank than those of the previous Sultan. The fourth highest are the Kadins or the mothers of the current Sultan's sons. The fifth highest are the Ikabals or the mothers of the current Sultan's daughters. The sixth highest are the Gözde or the Sultan's favorite concubines. The seventh highest are the Hautuns or the concubines that have walked The Golden Path (aka the paved road that goes from the main Harem's quarters to the Sultan's private rooms.) The eighth highest are the Odalisque or the concubines that have completed their training but have not walked The Golden Path yet. The ninth highest are the Concubines or the concubines that have not completed the training needed to join the harem quarters; any girl under the age of 18 will not join the harem quarters, even if she fully completes the training beforehand. The tenth and the lowest rank are the Old Kadins and the Old Ikabals of the old Sultan, they are moved to the new palace, but only the mother of the Sultan is called Valide Sultana.

The way the naming goes: name ; so a concubine named Aalia with the title Sultana would be Aalia Sultana.

Any thefts in any of the harems by any of the concubines will have them kicked out of the palace; the crime is first investigated by the Kalfas and the Ağas. Lying is also not permitted.

Unlike before the current Sultan, Sultan Emir I, there would be no Şehzades left alive after the previous Sultan dies and a new one gets crowned. However, once the previous Sultan, Sultan Eijaz II, made a betrothal agreement with Emperor Ulf Bjornson, this tradition was changed to allowing all sons to live past the crowning of the new Sultan.

----------------------------------------

There are now three levels of the harem. In Year One and Year Two, there are two things that are not told to them when they first arrive at the palace; Year One concubines are not told that they need to earn/be given a Kalmarkian name, and Year Two concubines are not told they need to willingly convert to the Three Goddesses religion. To even be eligible to be a concubine, a health examination and a sexual examination must be agreed to (no coercion is allowed, the slave MUST agree to it); if a slave says no, they will be automatically sent to become a Kalfa (and will never lay with the Sultan) or will be sold to another country/Palace.

Year One Passing Requirements:

- Concubines must be well behaved, any fighting will get a concubine kicked out

- Concubines must have the basic knowledge of reading and writing Kalmarkian

- Concubines must have the basic knowledge of the Three Goddesses religion & must begin to start reading the religious books

- Concubines must know (by painting) who the top Imperators are

- Concubines must have figured out their best form of entertainment (dancing, playing instruments, acting, singing, etc.)

- Concubines must have started learning how to sew and embroider

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

- Concubines must have earned and been given a fitting Kalmarkian name (this is not told to them)

Random Year One notes: the Bôli Sultana has full control of the Year One harem; a concubine is allowed to stay in the Year One quarters until they are 16 years old (or for five full years.) If they do not graduate by age 16, they are either married to an Imperator, a Regional administrator, a City Governer, or given as a gift. There are occasional parties that are put together by the Bôli Sultana for any Sultanas or the Valide Sultana.

Year Two Passing Requirements:

- Concubines must be well behaved, any fighting will get a concubine kicked out

- Concubines must be fluent in reading and writing Kalmarkian

- Concubines must fully understand the Three Goddesses religion & must have fully read the religious books

- Concubines must have perfect recall of how the government works

- Concubines must know exactly who is in charge of the government; the concubines must also know these people by painting

- Concubines must be good at sewing and embroidery

- Concubines must willingly convert to being part of the Three Goddesses religion (this is not told to them)

Random Year Two notes: the second highest ranked concubine will be in charge of Year Two; a concubine is allowed to stay in the Year Two quarters until they are 20 years old (or for five full years) unless they are under the age of 18 and then will stay until they turn 18. If they do not graduate by age 20, they are either married to an Imperator, a Regional administrator, a City Governer, or given as a gift. There are occasional parties that are put together by the second highest ranked concubine for the Bôli Sultana, any Sultanas, and the Valide Sultana.

Main Harem random notes:

The Valide Sultana is in charge of the main harem quarters and she rules it with an iron fist. Once the concubine has graduated into an Odalisque, this is where she will stay until she is dead; if she is lucky, she will walk The Golden Path and become a Hautun (or potentially a Gözde, an Ikabal or a Kadin.) The Valide Sultana will put on entertainment for the entirety of the main harem and potentially the Sultan as well.

----------------------------------------

Prices in Kalmarkian Soverign Pennies:

1 gold penny = 2 silver pennies or 5 bronze pennies or 25 copper pennies

1 silver penny = 2.5 bronze pennies or 12.5 copper pennies

1 bronze penny = 5 copper pennies

- a piece of bread is 2 copper pennies

- a young pig would be 3 bronze pennies

- a pig for slaughter would be 8 silver pennies

- a camel would be around 2 bronze pennies

- a cow would be 2 silver pennies

- a chicken would be 8 copper pennies

- a Koşmakum stallion would be around 100 gold pennies (based on the Arabian horse)

- a Koşmakum mare would be around 150 gold pennies

- a Koşmakum gelding (not sold yet)

- a Koşmakum yearling filly would be around 95 gold pennies

- a Koşmakum yearling colt would be around 75 gold pennies

- an Abyssinian queen would be 15 gold pennies (based on the Abyssinian cat)

- an Abyssinian king would be 12 gold pennies Krona

- an Abyssinian female kitten would be 8 gold pennies

- an Abyssinian male kitten would be 8 gold pennies

- a non-decorated handblown glass mirror for low nobility would be around 20,000 gold pennies

- a well-decorated handblown glass mirror for the upper nobility would be over 50,000 gold pennies

- a 20-gram sapphire would be around 20 gold pennies

- a 20-gram pure gold necklace would be around 50 gold pennies

- a perfect Snow Leopard skin (aka no tears, perfect coloring, etc) would be around 5,000 gold pennies

- a bolt of silk from the Pantano Ukaxa Swamp would be around 20 gold pennies

- a ceremonial rocket from Kalmark Empire would be around 100 gold pennies

- a vial of custom perfume from Glacien Dynasty or its craftspeople (around 0.15 fl oz/5 ml of perfume) would be around 20 gold pennies

- a vial of "mass-produced" perfume (around 4 oz/100ml) would be around 10 bronze pennies

----------------------------------------

- a years worth of rent from a peasant would be around 20 bronze pennies

- a peasant earns around 160 bronze pennies

- the city administrator (aka the ruling mayor of the city) earns around 500 bronze pennies a year

- the regional governor (aka the people that overlook several city administrators) earns around 1,000 bronze pennies a year

- the imperators (aka the governing body right under the Emperor) earn around 5,000 bronze pennies a year

- the falconers earn around 1,000 bronze pennies a year

- the translators earn around 3,000 bronze pennies a year

- the sultan earns around 15,000 bronze pennies a year

- the valide sultana (mother of the sultan) earns around 5,000 bronze pennies a year

- the şehzades (sons of the sultan) earn around 3,500 bronze pennies a year

- the sultanas (daughters of the sultan) earn around 2,500 bronze pennies a year

- the sultanzade (sons of the sultana) earns around 1,500 bronze pennies a year

- the hanimsultanas (daughters of the sultana) earns around 1,000 bronze pennies a year

- the bôli sultana (top concubine in the harem) earns around 3,000 bronze pennies a year

- the kadins (concubine with at least a son) earn 2,500 bronze pennies a year

- the ikabals (concubine with at least a daughter) earn 1,000 bronze pennies a year

- the gözde (favorite concubine) earn 700 bronze pennies a year

- the hautuns (concubine that has walked the Golden Path) earn 500 bronze pennies a year

- the odalisques (concubine that has graduated the learning and have joined the main harem) earn 350 bronze pennies a year

- the concubines (concubine that have no graduated the learning)earn 150 bronze pennies a year

- the old kadins (concubine with at least a son) earn 1,000 bronze pennies a year

- the old ikabals (concubine with at least a daughter) earn 500 bronze pennies a year

All concubines are given food and enough bolts of clothing each year for 5 new outfits.

The way the naming goes: name
; so a concubine named Aalia with the title Sultana would be Aalia Sultana.
