Prologue

Through a dark and dirty alleyway she ran. Turning to the left, she found herself facing a crowd of agents. She turned to the right, the situation was the same. She gripped the handle of the bag carrying all her belongings, unmoving. As the suited men reached her, the ground started disintegrating, sending her and all the others tumbling down into the darkness.

She gasped, waking up in a pile of sweat.

She had been having these dreams for a while, starting when she first started plotting the escape a month ago. She turned on her phone, staring unblinkingly at the date.

Thursday, February 12, 2009. A day before the escape was supposed to be planned. She stared a bit longer before lying back on the bed slowly. She felt at the soft bed, trying her hardest to fall into slumber. Seeing as she couldn't within a few minutes, she stared at the ceiling.

[I don't know if I should do this anymore...] still keeping her face blank as she tried to transmit her thoughts to the ceiling. It was the only thing that would listen to her right now.

[Frederick, that man. He will definitely send people after me if I escape, just like in those dreams. Why would father send me to him?] She tossed in her bed for a while and fell asleep.

In an ill-lit and litter-filled alley, a man hurriedly dodged the numerous dumpsters, taking light steps around the trash. He gasped and puffed, seeming out of breath.

Looking behind him, still seeing the outlines of the grotesque monsters and the deep and bloody red glows out of where their eyes would be, he sped up even more, coughing as he ran.

As he got to the maximum speed possible for his already tired out body, he tripped on an aluminum can, falling to the dirty and rubbish filled ground.

The monsters caught up to him, and he could see their faces with the aid of the dim neon light from the "OPEN" signs of the bars. Their faces that seemed like they were made up of built up leathery skin, faces, widened, smiling, making their mutilated looking faces look even worse. Lowering their disgusting mouths towards the still struggling man, they began to tear out his flesh.

Night got up from the cold cement ground, quickly, and gasped out a few breaths. It was one of those realistic dreams again, like the ones he had had ever since he was a child.

"Why did I leave home, anyways?" he shook his head to the side and got up. The scene was the same alley he was chased in, and ripped down to the flesh.

When he was younger, and these dreams had just started plaguing him, he was extremely scared of the scenes. In addition to the fact that flesh monsters were scary enough, they always had the exact settings of where he felt asleep.

Mother who comforted him was gone, though. Staying in that place would only make the dreams worse.

He looked up to the sky, and past the crack like rooftops he was sleeping under. He could see a sky that was still as dark as the abyss, and although there weren't any stars, presumably from the air pollution, there was a hint of it almost turning dawn.

Night stayed his gaze on the stars for a moment, wondering, and then lowering his gaze to his backpack. He slung his backpack over his shoulder, stretched, and then slowly walked out off the alley, going to find some food. [The park's trash cans shouldn't be cleaned out yet... let's see, today is... Friday. Yup, they aren't cleared out yet.]

Digging through the trash cans and finding an apple with just a single bite in it, he wondered meaningless thoughts. [Will I ever do anything in this life other than dig through trash cans? Should I perhaps try harder to look for jobs?] those thoughts were silenced by him finding a plastic bag full of bread crust.

"Well, I can think about it later. I should first eat, and then try to wash up." he muttered to himself, and ran to sit under a tree, eating the breakfast he found. He finished, and then ran to a restroom to clean himself up, and when he finished, the sky had turned orange, with the sun dyeing the clouds and blue sky orange. It was still a magnificent sight, a ball of flame swimming out towards the centre of a blue ocean.

[Job... where can I go? Maybe a fast food place would work...] he stopped staring at the sky, and began running towards the city.

Coming near the airport, he could see more of the planes taking off and landing, with tourists and cars as well. The noise it generated was sometimes fascinating to Night. [I've never been on an airplane before... I wonder how it would be like...] he shook the thoughts away from his head, and continued on towards a more populated area.

Cutting through another dirty, dumpster-filled, and feces-filled alley to get to the more commercial areas, he still kept running.

Then he bumped into someone, falling to the ground.
