Vol 1.10 - The Long Haul Pt. 3

Klaus and Belle watched the tests from a viewing room found above the training room itself. Klaus was leaned up against the glass with his hand on his chin. Belle sat in one of the seats jotting things down on her notepad.

“What’re you planning to do about the potential danger that Jean poses?”

Klaus took his hand off his chin as he reached into his pockets for his pack of cigarettes.

“I don’t like thinking about it. But, if push comes to shove, I’d much rather be the one to kill him than some random hunter,”

“You’re not always going to be there when something happens,”

“And you’ve already made that very clear,”

Klaus sighed as turned his attention back into the training room. Putting his lighter back into his pocket he grabbed the lit cigarette from his mouth and held it between his fingers.

“Even as an instructor at the academy, Jean isn’t your only priority,”

“Yes, but he’s my main priority,”

“Can you really do it, Klaus? If it meant killing Jean, could you do it?”

The tone of Belle’s voice made clear to Klaus that the question had an underlying sense of distrust. There was a lingering silence that followed the question. Klaus let out a sigh;

“I don’t know…”

“Well, I hope for the sake of everyone at the academy, including you, that you’ll make the right choice should the time come,”

Belle clicked the top of her pen, stowing it in the clamps of her clipboard. She stood up and left the room without another word, leaving Klaus alone in the room.

Jean sat in a chair as the two doctors drew a blood sample from his arm.

“Didn’t Dr. Belle already take a sample earlier?”

Evelynn took the syringe from Elton as she transferred the blood into a test tube with some other liquid in it.

“The sample that Belle took was for your body analysis, this is for your weapon,”

“What does my blood have to do with weapons?”

“Every weapon that a hunter carries is partially forged by their own blood. It corresponds to each unique ‘potential’ drawing power from it,” Evelynn responded.

“I’m curious to see what the forge team manages to create considering your ‘special’ condition,” added Elton.

Jean couldn’t help but feel as though to Elton, he was nothing more than a once in a lifetime discovery. Comparatively, Evelynn seemed to view Jean as an actual person. Disregarding her high-class and statuesque demeanor, there was a clear sense of understanding and sympathy towards Jean’s situation that was lacking in her significant other.

Elton helped Jean off of the chair and gave him a fresh set of clothing, that luckily weren’t the hospital gown he had been wearing earlier. After putting on the clothes, Jean was escorted out of the room and back into the hallway where Klaus was waiting for him.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

The three of them approached Klaus, who after seeing them, ashed his cigarette.

“So how’d everything go?” asked Klaus.

“We got all the data we needed, for now,” replied Evelynn.

“How’re you feeling?” Klaus asked Jean.

“I’m fine,”

“Glad to know that you recover pretty quickly after falling,” Klaus added with a chuckle.

“You saw that?” Jean asked embarrassingly.

Klaus gave Jean’s shoulder a pat while giving him a smile.

“Did you hear back from the academy?”

Klaus shifted his attention back to Evelynn.

“Yeah, they said they would admit Jean under proper supervision,”

“I see. I’m glad there weren’t any issues with your entry,” said Evelynn with relief.

“What does that mean for me?” Jean chimed into the conversation.

“New school, new subjects, taught under my supervision,” said Klaus.

Klaus knew that Jean was still hesitant about the situation that they found themselves in. All Klaus could hope for was that him being there would able to help Jean transition and learn more effectively.

“You’ll start in a few weeks. We’ll take that time to teach you the basics,”

“Alright,” said Jean.

“We’re also going to be there monitor and assist you when Klaus can’t. Think of us as your support team,” Elton interjected.

The four of them stood amongst one another and carried on their conversation as a familiar tall-bodied figure approached from behind them. The sound of his coats buckles clanking against another signaled to the group of his presence. All four of them moved their focus towards the figure to see Richter. Richter gave them a nod as greetings before stopping in front of them.

“I see that the initial tests are complete,”

“Yes. We managed to get ample data to run our initial calculations from,”

Richter began to eye Jean. This made Jean reel back and turtle behind Klaus, avoiding any eye-contact with Richter. Richter caught a glimpse of the bandage wraps covering Klaus’ hand.

“Is that injury from earlier today?”

There was an obvious tension between the two of them after the incident that occurred in Jean’s hospital room. Klaus didn’t want to prolong the conversation nor did he want to spend time seeing Richter. Klaus brushed off the question, simply saying;

“It’s not something for you to worry about,”

“I see. Well, I hope it’s nothing serious,”

Jean could feel the intense aura emanating from Richter. His presence alone made Jean feel small. In front of Richter, it didn’t seem to matter that he was half-beast. To Jean, Richter only viewed him as another potential target to hunt.

Noticing the tension, Evelynn nudged Elton’s arm, apparently signaling him to lighten the mood. Elton slinked forward rubbing his hands together. With a nervous smile on his face he said with an audibly shaky voice;

“Umm, sorry to interrupt. But, we have a couple more things to get done and we’re on a tight schedule, so we’ll be going on ahead Mr. Richter,”

Richter’s gaze immediately shifted away from Jean and Klaus as his menacing aura dissipated in the process.

“Very well. Apologies for taking your time,”

“Oh! It’s no big deal sir, just wanted to let you know haha,” said Elton.

Elton awkwardly pushed Jean away from the group and began leading him down the hallway. Evelynn followed soon after, leaving behind Klaus and Richter.

“I don’t expect you to understand my perspective Klaus, nor do I expect to understand yours. I just want you to know that if the time comes and you aren’t able to follow through with your duties, I’ll be the one to kill him,”

“That’s fine. But, if you lay a hand on him before I’m lying dead on the ground, I will come and find you,”

Klaus turned away from Richter and made his way towards the three that had gone on ahead of him. Richter watched Klaus walk down the hallway before pulling away to answer a phone call.

“Hello? Yes, the asset is under supervision”

Richter stayed quiet listening intently to what was coming through his earpiece.

“Understood. I’ll be sure to pass it on. Good-bye,”

Richter hung up the phone as he continued down the hallway.
