01 Close Encounters Of Some Kind

It's the morning and I...wake up?

No, wait. If it was the morning, why would it be dark outside? I mean, of course it's winter, but I never wake up in time for school anyway.

Well, I guess there's no use going back to bed. I slid off my bed and my feet into a pair of socks and threw on the Area 51 jacket I had thrown on the ground the other day. Nearly halfway to the door, I slip and fall—"HUPP!!!!"—on stacks of GL comics I never returned to the library.

"Ahgrhiutg," I groan, rolling onto my back. My room had some way of keeping me trapped in there for days. Where did I want to go again? Oh right, I wanted...food...

My eyelids closed halfway when a bright flash of white light filled the entire room.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

I frantically made it down the stairs and ran to the door. My heart was pounding where my heart was supposed to pound and in my head and in my hands and cold sweat ran down the sides of my head while the every brightening white light seared into my brain. An intense hot flash of high pitch noises teared away my five senses and I still fought to get to my front lawn.

"ALIENS?!" I screamed into the white light. My unkempt hair flew in all directions from winds that confirmed to me that there had to be some kind of spaceship landing right in my front lawn. They were so strong that my legs gave in and I fell on my butt.

"I AM A HUMBLE HUMAN," I continued, tears rolling down my cheeks. "PLEASE SHOW YOURSELVES TO ME!!"

A figure emerged from the bright light. My eyes hurt from squinting so much but a rush of excitement kicked in once again when I saw it. I grinned and opened my mouth once again to speak.

"MY NAME!!! MY NAME IS FIREFLY!!!!!!!!" I screamed. "WELCOME TO EAR—EHUEHUEHU—!!"

Something shot into my chest. Coughing, confused, and blood overflowing with adrenaline from everything that was happening, I laid on the wet grass and stared at a dizzy figure hunching over me, feathers scratching against my burnt skin.
