It was the first practice of the middle school basketball team, and Coach Johnson had gathered all the players in a circle at the center of the court. The gym was filled with the sound of sneakers squeaking on the polished wooden floors and the excited chatter of the young athletes.
"Good afternoon, everyone," Coach Johnson said, his voice loud and clear. "I want to welcome all of you to the team. My name is Coach Johnson, and I'll be leading you through this season. I hope we can work hard together and achieve great things."
The coach then turned to the players and asked them to introduce themselves one by one. Each player stood up and stated their name, grade, and position on the team.
"Hi, my name is Marcus, and I'm in seventh grade. I play point guard," Marcus said, as he stood up and faced his new teammates.
"Hey, I'm Ryan. I'm in eighth grade, and I play center," Ryan said.
As the introductions continued, Marcus found himself zoning out, his attention focused solely on Ryan. He knew that Ryan was the most talented player here and that he needed to unlock his potential to go far this season.
The coach, Coach Johnson, gathered the team together and introduced himself. He then began to outline the plan for the season, explaining the different plays and drills that they would be practicing. Marcus and Ryan listened intently, trying to absorb as much information as possible.
As they started the drills, Marcus felt his competitive nature kick in. He was determined to do better than everyone else on the team. They started with a simple passing drill, which Marcus had done many times before. He confidently caught the ball and passed it to Ryan, who fumbled with it for a moment before passing it back. Marcus tried not to show his frustration, instead offering encouragement to Ryan.
The coach watched as they completed the passing drill and then moved on to dribbling. Marcus was particularly good at dribbling and took his time to show off his skills. He weaved in and out of the cones with ease, his well practiced movements making it easy for him to move quickly. Ryan struggled a bit, his larger stature making it harder for him to maneuver the ball. But Marcus offered him tips and encouragement, urging him to keep trying.
Next up was shooting. Marcus was confident in his shooting ability, having spent countless hours practicing. He took his time and carefully aimed, sinking basket after basket. Ryan watched in awe, impressed by Marcus's skill.
But then it was Ryan's turn to shoot. He took a deep breath and lined up his shot, but it missed the basket completely. He tried again, and again, but kept missing. Marcus could see the frustration building in Ryan and felt a pang of empathy. He knew that Ryan uses his strength as a center to score, but Marcus also knew that it was likely that Ryan wouldn't continue to grow to the typically height of an NBA center. So he went over to Ryan and showed him some pointers, helping him adjust his grip on the ball and suggesting he bend his knees more. Slowly but surely, Ryan's shots started getting closer to the basket.

As they continued with the drills, Marcus continued to try and form a bond with Ryan. As the warm up ended, Coach Johnson called the team together for a debrief. He praised the team for their effort and reminded them that they all had room for improvement.
Marcus decided to take it upon himself to support Ryan by passing him the ball more often. He knew that Ryan was nervous and demotivated because of his loss to him, but he just needed a little boost of confidence.
As the game started, Marcus found himself with the ball and quickly passed it to Ryan. Ryan caught the ball, looked up, and saw that he had an open shot. He took it, and to Marcus's delight, the ball sailed through the hoop.
"Nice shot, Ryan!" Marcus shouted, giving him a thumbs up.
Ryan grinned, feeling a little more confident already. As they continued to play, Marcus made a point to pass to Ryan as often as possible, setting him up for easy shots and giving him plenty of opportunities to handle the ball.
Ryan's confidence grew with each successful play. He began to dribble the ball more confidently and take more shots. Marcus could see the difference in his demeanor and was thrilled to see his friend playing with more confidence.
As the game progressed, Ryan started to take more risks, trying out new moves and playing with more aggression. Marcus continued to support him by passing him the ball, setting him up for easy baskets and giving him the chance to make big plays.
During the scrimmage, Marcus was focused on supporting Ryan and passing to him as much as possible. He wanted to help his new friend feel confident and included on the team. As they played, Marcus couldn't help but notice the talent of some of the other players.
There was one player in particular who stood out to Marcus, named Matt, whom Marcus vaguely remembered from the tryouts.
Matt was a lanky player with long arms and legs, and he seemed to move with a little awkwardness on the court. Marcus could see that he had a great sense of timing and instincts for defense, always knowing often exactly when to make a move and block a shot. He was quick on his feet and seemed to be able to read some of the other team's plays before they even happened.
However, Marcus also noticed that Matt struggled a bit with his offensive game. He seemed unconfident when dribbling the ball and often hesitated when it came time to take a shot.
At one point in the scrimmage, Marcus found himself matched up against Matt. He decided to test Matt’s skills. As the ball was inbounded, Marcus dribbled down the court, trying to create an opening for a shot. Marcus dribbled towards Matt, faking left before quickly shifting right. Matt bit on the fake, moving in the wrong direction, and Marcus saw an opening.
He accelerated towards the basket, but just as he was about to go up for the layup, he felt a sharp poke from behind. Matt's length had allowed him to recover quickly and poke the ball out of Marcus' hands.
Marcus stumbled and lost control of the ball, surprised in himself for letting Matt get the better of him. As he gathered himself, he couldn't help but admire Matt's natural defensive instincts. Marcus watched as Matt scrambled back into position, his long arms reaching out to swat at the ball. Marcus couldn't help but wonder if Matt's seemingly instinctual defense was really just the result of his gambling on the court.
Despite some tough competition from the other players, Marcus and Ryan's teamwork paid off. They won the scrimmage with Ryan scoring the winning basket.
As they left the court, Ryan turned to Marcus and gave him a big high-five.
"Thanks for the support out there, man. I don't think I could have done it without you," Ryan said.
"No problem, buddy. You played great," Marcus replied, feeling proud of his friend's progress.
