Ball and Chain of Half-Dead
Bright Moment before the Shadow Calls

Bright Moment before the Shadow Calls

You know that everyday life can be dull and mundane, but those rare moments shine brighter than the sun and darker than sin that we can perceive. Today, I declare that it was one of those days for me.

The higher the golden Sun rises, the deeper the shadow it casts. Sadly for me, that darkness swallows me as an ambush predator into its den before letting me go by the wayside, only to become prey of scavengers. That was how I felt waking up in that dark room chained down. Such dark times. But that is not how I would like to start my story. So, I will take liberties to embellish my happy moment.

Hello reader, my name is Addison Fa; I am in my first year in college. It has already been two semesters since I have taken classes and studied for my future. I was able to start making friends and getting used to the flow of the other students.

I was lucky to stay out of the crazy teachers' sights; they were pulling students to be their free assistants left and right. Well, at least in the classes I was taking. My preferred method was not to make eye contact. However, that doesn't seem to work here. I digress.

With my slim, fit physique and black, slicked hair, I made an impression from the back. Once you turned me around, you would see into the deep pool of brown jewels that are my eyes. Thanks to my mother's genes, my pale skin only highlighted my jawline. I was handsome.

I know I sound full of myself, but facts were the facts; I was a little skittish, you could say, for the first two semesters since I can be shy and introverted in a new environment. So, well, I already said it.

Now, two of my roommates had moved out and were still looking for someone to sell their contracts to for the rest of the allotted time. At least I won't have to deal with Judice bringing new girls over twice and making out on the couch anymore.

Jealousy is not a pretty thing and makes studying harder than it needs to be. Now I am free from that and will get my own girl soon.

That is the plan. There is this one girl that I have noticed taking glances at me. She is very cute, almost a goddess. I don't need to go into details about her full, well-endowed hourglass figure with long auburn hair to her waist that told no lies. However, for the most part, she did like to wear more comfy, baggy clothes. Just more dreams to be made.

Sorry, I was gushing about a woman; she is critical about how and why I am the way I am. Still, I heard she recently broke up with her boyfriend. So, I thought now was the opportune time to gain her favor and be her hero. I know I set myself up as a rebound boyfriend.

I gathered my courage and approached her in the hallway between our classes. "Rebecca Farrow, I have liked you for a long time with your golden heat that cares to all around you to your dreamy face when you smile naturally. Would you do me the honor of allowing me to escort you on a date this evening?"

"Ha hahaha ha. Sorry, you were so serious and old-fashioned just now," said Rebecca, holding a hand to her chest, blushing lightly, and looking at the ground and back at me. "Haha. Okay, I would love to go on a date this evening. What are the plans for the evening?"

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"Well, I was planning on starting with rollerblading at the dance hall tonight, followed by a relaxing dinner and ending the night with a moonlight stroll through the park as I walk you home," said Addison while sweat pooled down his back.

"Sounds like a plan to me."

"Good. Where would you like to meet up after classes, the library or the fountain?"

"Hmm. The fountain should be fine," said Rebbeca. She turned away and started heading to the hall on the right. Before turning the corner, she turned around and waved at him while shouting, "Hey stud, you better not be late! I will be there at 6 pm." She smiled brightly before rushing to her next class.

Although I loved the attention she gave me. The jealous stars of all and cures muttered under their breath from the guys, and a couple of girls in passing. It was a little overwhelming. But I guess I do love it if only a little.

I better learn to change this bad habit. I know how great I am, but I don't want to be a politician or put myself in harm's way as an attention seeker. Though some girls have it rough, they can't go a day without looking in a mirror.

Now, enough about me. The rest of the classes were the same as always. I keep up with the work and notes but get distracted with thoughts about Rebbeca occasionally. I wondered what flavor her red lips were and if we could perform great dance moves at the dancehall rink.

After class, we met at the fountain. She still had her bag hugged at the waist. She looked as cute and good-looking as I am compared to a man and a woman. They are a great couple. I am sure that is what those who saw us would think. Now I have to convince her that I will make a great boyfriend during our date that night.

The sun was getting low, so I took her by the arm and escorted her to our destination at the dance hall, which we would use as a roller rink. It was surprisingly fun. Though I was clumsy, Rebecca had fun skating circles around me while dancing to the music.

At least she helped when I fumbled. It seemed our roles reversed during this part of the date, but I was able to be the perfect gentleman during the dinner. We ate at one of the local restaurants, nothing fancy or over the.

We talked about school, our likes, what we studied, etc. It was a good date, and now I was escorting her through the park. Nothing eventful happened. We talked some more about the moon and whatever came to mind.

When we came to her dorm, I left her at the door and wished her a good night. I will admit that I was too nervous to try and attempt a kiss on the first date, but I sent her off with a smile on her face and said how we would meet each other in the early morning class tomorrow.

Now that I was alone, I started to walk back through the park to head back to my own dorms on the other side. I thought that I might get a little lonely tonight by myself in that room.

For some reason, I felt like I was being watched. More than once, but whenever I turned and looked around, I could not find anything or anyone there.

The wind blew. The leaves rustled. The trees creaked as old floorboards.

Then, all went quiet. The next thing I knew, I stumbled. I think I tripped on nothing. While on my hands and knees, I felt a sharp pain in my chest, and a dripping faucet leaking from somewhere echoed hauntingly in my ears.

I could feel it getting cold. I was wondering if a cold front was passing by. Then, as I tried to steady myself, I collapsed, fell to my side, and saw it.

A black blade sticking out of my chest, and a pool of blood was forming around me. Before I could call for help, my strength failed me. Everything went black.

My last thought was about how disappointed I might make Rebecca for not keeping our promise and meeting up in class the next day.

The next thing that I knew, all was black. My body was heavy. I wondered If I was saved and in a hospital, but no. I was on the ground, not on a bed, and I was restrained by something. I couldn't move against the icy restraints that clanked and rattled with every movement.

After I grew tired and stopped moving, the dark room was illuminated in light by a creaking metal door being opened. A woman's silhouette was all I could see before me.

"You're finally up, student. But that's the dead for you. You just can't keep them down," said the mysterious figure.

My mind went blank.
