Chapter 4: A Night In Vandara Part Two
As the nursery was covered in a thick layer of smoke and a light orange glow, both caused by the burning of the lava like substance on the debris from the roof, A thin translucent hemispherical layer could be seen separating the crying infants from the chaos happening outside.
The barrier, that had various cracks all around it and looked very fragile, was being held up by one of the wet nurses who had been assigned the night shift and was woken up in the middle of her slumber in the nursery, as one of the stuffed animals on a shelf above her bed for the night had mysteriously fallen on her face.
Luckily, she was quick enough to react when the roof of the building collapsed, and was able to save the defenseless infants.
Outside the barrier, the wailing of the now awoken infants could not be heard; What could be heard was the rolling and crashing of little parts of the roof that were still falling off bit by bit, the screaming of the toddlers, infants and matrons as they were shocked by the crash, and the rushing of footsteps in the hallways of the orphanage.
As the dusty smoke settled, the four cloaked figures standing atop the remaining part of the roof all gathered to look inside the hole which was still increasing, careful to not step onto any part that looked too fragile.
When the barrier underneath the smoke became visible, they could see various matrons grabbing babies left and right and rushing out of the nursery, while some more prominent looking matrons could be seen looking right back at them with aggressive expressions on their faces.
The roof of the nursery, was plenty high, which was why the wet nurse on night shift was able to react in time to save the children and was also the reason the cloaked figures were not jumping in through the hole to begin with.
As though wanting to save as many infants as fast as possible, the six prominent looking nurses were not moving and just giving glares filled with contempt to the four cloaked figures.
Behind the cloaked figures, on the roof, the air slightly distorted as a voice spoke out:
"Go after the infants, none of them should be left alive, to ensure the prophecy does not come true"
The four cloaked figures promptly took out ropes with hooks attached to the end and found suitable spots to fix the hooks in; They then threw the ropes down the hole and began quickly climbing down them.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
As the guarding matrons saw them climb down the ropes, two of them started chanting and balls of fire quickly formed behind them, as their chanting ended, and they flung their hands in the direction of the roof, the two fireballs quickly sped towards two different ropes near the roof.
Just as they were about to reach the ropes however, two blue hands could be seen extending out of one of the cloaked figures hanging from one of the ropes as the hands took the hit from the fireballs; As the charred blue hands were retracted back into the cloaked figure, his rate of descent slowed to a snails pace, and he wiped inside the hood with one of his sleeves while holding on with his legs and the other arm.
On the sleeve, blood tainted black could be seen.
By this time, the other three figures in cloaks had reached a low enough height and jumped off of the ropes, landing squarely on the ground, with the burly figure making a small crater beneath his feet.
Two of the figures were attacked by one matron each, while the burly man was attacked by two.
As the fight was ongoing, one of the normal looking cloaked figures raised his hand and a watch with a scar under it was revealed under the sleeve ;As soon as his hand was raised, the matron in front of him came to a standstill, She then began to bleed out of her eyes, ears, mouth and nose as her face dried up... She was already dead.
Without warning, A loud slam was heard and the cloaked figure raising his hand got thrown into the nursery wall exactly opposite the direction of the entrance, with no cribs being there in his paths, a man shaped hole was created in the wall as he went through it and continued crashing through a few more rooms.
"How dare you kill one of my matrons."
The matron said, her voice dripping with killing intent as she stood in the place where the scarred figure was standing, rubbing her fist as she stared at the hole in the wall the figure had created.
She had been hiding previously as she had felt five presences for a moment right before the ropes were swung down, but the strength of the scarred figure, who was now running back through the holes in the walls created as he had passed through them, was too much for the defense team to handle.
Unfortunately, He had been suppressing his aura to the bronze first level before and the head matron was unable to detect it in time to prevent the first casualty.
As the scarred figure reached the wall of the nursery, the head matron burst into a sprint and started moving fast enough to seem like a blur to the weakest matrons as she punched at the figure.
The figure reacted in time and punched back, his fist meeting the matrons'.
The figure was obviously weaker in the exchange of strength as he was thrown back like a punching bag, with his fist profusely bleeding and misshapen, obviously broken.
As the clash happened, the matrons and cloaked figures including the one with charred blue hands extending out of his back who had jumped off of one of the ropes recently to join the fight, stopped to watch the exchange.
As the sound of the clash extended through the orphanage, unknown to those who were fighting, a small thud occurred at the corner of the nursery under the hole in the roof, and two sets of footprints were made on the dusty floor.
