Chapter 18 - What is a TN agent?

Chapter 18 - What is a TN agent?

Katya and Nova had a long conversation. She explained in detail how they managed to defeat the B-Synchro and everything that transpired during the three days he was unconscious.

After burying the victims of the beast’s flames, the Moblings abandoned their prejudices and began treating her with newfound kindness.

She even managed to grasp some of their language. It wasn’t so much the words themselves but the gestures and intent behind them. A few words could carry profound meaning, depending on the context and the way they were expressed, like a nuanced, verbal shorthand.

Katya also told him about her research, which had expanded significantly with the help of the Moblings. They provided her with all the information she needed, even from Sagax. Her original goal had shifted, she no longer sought to unite the two races. Now, she wanted to foster respect for the Moblings’ land, urging humanity to keep their distance, especially after the B-Synchro’s attack, which endangered the Moblings' survival.

Inevitably, her curiosity about Nova’s battle surfaced. She wanted to know how he had gained such power and managed to subdue the Lion in their final confrontation.

“I did what?” Nova asked, confused.

"The last thing I remember was blacking out after it used the move the Hulk did on the Trickster God."

“The what?” she asked, frowning.

"You know... slamming me into the ground," Nova said, briefly forgetting he was in another world. He quickly realized that, no matter how he explained, she wouldn't understand his reference.

“Anyway, right before that thing defeated you, your aura exploded, and you were about to annihilate it, but then you fainted,” Katya explained what she had seen. However, Nova remained skeptical. It was as though she were describing someone else’s actions, not his own.

“Was I really about to take down something that powerful?” he wondered, imagining himself as some kind of superhero. Yet, one glance at his current state shattered that illusion.

“And if I hadn’t arrived when I did, you’d be dead,” she added with a proud smile. “You owe me.”

“Haha, thanks,” Nova responded with a laid-back grin. “That thing was terrifying... and it was the weakest of the ones you mentioned.”

“Did you know its danger level?” Katya’s eyes widened with interest.

“Yeah, the Nexus device called it ‘wolf level,’” Nova answered casually.

Katya stood in shock for a moment, then rested her chin on her hand. “Wolf level... that’s equivalent to a one-star agent,” she murmured, her gaze fixed on Nova.

"Did Nova really have the strength to nearly defeat a creature like that?" she wondered. "Maybe it was just a relatively weak wolf-level creature..."

“It also said I was rated zero stars, level five. Do you know what that means?” Nova asked, noticing her disbelief.

“Did it really say that?” Katya asked, astonished.

“Yeah, unless I’ve got brain damage, I clearly remember the number five,” he said, sensing her skepticism.

“Nova, regular humans are level zero on the agent scale. Anyone rated level one or two has received extensive training. Beyond that, we're talking about exceptional humans or synchro-fauna.”

Nova's irritation vanished instantly as Katya's explanation piqued his interest. "Was that why my body felt so strong?" He thought. Perhaps the gods of luck hadn’t been too harsh on him after all.

“If you’re level five, you must have been training since childhood. It’s a shame you forgot... but now that your limiter’s gone, I’m sure you’ll keep getting stronger,” she exclaimed, excited by the thought.

“Limiter?” Nova asked, confused.

“Every being is born with a natural limiter in their DNA. It's what people call good or bad genetics, a cap on how strong you can become. You must have had exceptional genetics to reach level five, but now that your synchrony has awakened, that limiter is gone. With training, you can become much stronger," Katya explained.

Nova frowned, clenching and unclenching his hands. “Well, I don’t feel diferent. In the fight with the B-Synchro, I felt lighter, faster, and tougher, but now I feel… normal, like always.”

“You idiot, that’s because you’re not using your synchro,” Katya said with a disappointed look. “Didn’t you notice the aura around you during the fight?”

“What?” Nova blinked in confusion, prompting Katya to put her hand to her face in disbelief.

“Seriously? Why do you think the Nexus device was activated? You’re a synchro user, Nova.”

Her words stunned him. In the heat of the battle, he hadn’t noticed much besides trying to survive and defeat the beast without more casualties. But now that he thought about it, it made sense. The lion's attacks hadn’t hurt him as much as they should have, especially compared to the Alpha, who was much stronger than him during their training sessions.

“Wait, is synchro something that turns on and off?” he wondered aloud.

“I don’t know much more than what I already told you, but it seems so,” Katya said with a smug expression. “I think it’s because I also awakened my synchro, huhuhu,” she added proudly, closing her eyes and giving a thumbs-up.

“After the fight, I started training that sensation and can now activate it at will, but it’s exhausting, both physically and mentally. It stresses the body too much to use constantly. If I had to describe it, I’d say it triples your physical abilities.”

Katya’s explanation helped clarify some of the mysteries surrounding this strange aura. If it was as she said, Nova figured he could probably learn to use it with some practice.

“So, now that we’ve awakened Synchrony, our levels will increase, and these Synchro aura will be enhanced?” he asked, curious about the newfound power they both shared. “But then why did you mention agents being rated by stars?”

“I think that’s how it works, but there’s still a lot I don’t understand about this power,” Katya admitted, sounding slightly disappointed at her lack of knowledge. “The stars are a way to classify agents by their abilities. People with zero stars are beginners, and their levels range from 0 to 10. Even if their synchro is awakened, they’re far below those with higher star ratings.”

Nova nodded, beginning to grasp the classification system. “So, the stars are ranks to gauge an agent's strength quickly. Do you know the highest level someone with five stars can reach?” he asked, curious about Adan’s true power.

From what Nova had seen, Adan's strength far surpassed that of the B-Synchro, and he had only witnessed 0.5% of Adan’s actual abilities.

“Hmmm, I don’t really know. Those with five stars have mastered their synchrony and gained abilities beyond anything we can imagine. Maybe, if we’re lucky enough to meet one someday, we can ask them,” Katya replied, though it left many questions unanswered.

However, something else she said caught Nova’s attention.

“Wait, we?” he asked, confused. He had assumed they would part ways once they reached the next city.

“Of course!” Katya laughed. “Now that we’ve both awakened synchrony, won’t you join me in becoming a TN agent? You could help me find my grandfather and explore this world, just like you always wanted.”

She spoke confidently, as though she was certain Nova would agree. “I think we make a good team, and it would be great to have someone like you watching my back,” she added with a warm smile. After their battle with the B-Synchro, Katya had a clearer understanding of who Nova was, and she wanted him by her side.

“If you ever take the test to become a TN agent, I’m sure you’d be a great one.”

Nova recalled Adan’s words and realized how incredibly fortunate he was to have awakened this power. Now, he could truly explore the vast world ahead.

“To be honest, I’d rather not face a B-Synchro again,” he admitted, before adding with a sigh, “but you told me only agents can freely travel between countries in this world, right? So, I guess I don’t have much of a choice.” He smiled at Katya, signaling his acceptance of her proposal.

“Is this really the guy who almost single-handedly defeated a much stronger B-Synchro?” Katya thought, glancing at him with amusement. "Yeah," she replied.

“By the way, since you’ve lost your memory, do you even know what Terra Nexus agents do?” she asked, ready to explain if needed.

“Hmmm, they regulate everything related to B-Synchros and the use of Synchrony in the world, right?” he responded.

“Well, that’s a pretty general way of putting it,” Katya said with a small smile. “In reality, agents don’t always focus on fighting B-Synchros. Terra Nexus has several branches, and agents can specialize in a field that matches their skills.”

She noticed Nova’s curiosity and continued, knowing she had his full attention.

“Synchro wildlife research, research and development of new technologies for public security, B-Synchro classification and hunting, civilian security and protection, forces against smuggling of B-Synchro parts, intelligence and information, archaeology and expeditions, bounty hunters and even research of the resonance phenomenon,” she listed, pausing for a moment to catch her breath before adding, “These are just a few of the branches you could work in as an agent. But you need at least a 2-star rating to even qualify. Below that, you're just a rookie.”

“So, many of these jobs revolve around B-Synchros and users Synchro?” Nova asked, processing what she said. “Doesn’t it seem like overkill to have bounty hunters or civilian protection agents? They’d be like gods among mortals...”

“This world is all about synchrony and B-Synchros,” Katya replied in a more somber tone. “Think about it—there are people who’ve awakened their synchro but never joined TN. Some use their abilities for personal gain. The world is bigger than you think, Nova.”

Her words carried a weight that made Nova realize just how vast and dangerous this world could be. Terra Nexus didn’t just exist to contain the B-Synchros but also to deal with those who misused their synchrony.

“You’re right... This world is bigger than I ever imagined,” Nova said, a trace of apprehension in his voice. His inexperience with these matters became clear. “Good thing I’ve got a friend to help guide me,” he added with a warm smile in Katya’s direction.

Her cheeks flushed at the compliment, and she quickly looked away, a shy smile playing on her lips. “Ah, y-yeah... whatever,” she stammered, embarrassed.

Before she could respond further, Sagax entered, leaning on his cane and carrying several implements, seemingly to treat Nova’s wounds.

“So, you’re awake at last. You’re lucky, and pretty tough too,” the old Mobling remarked as he approached Nova’s bed and laid down the supplies.

“Yeah, I guess I am,” Nova replied with a grateful smile.

“She stayed by your side every night. Worried you might not wake up,” Sagax said as he began removing the bandages from Nova’s wounds, applying his medicinal ointments. “I don’t know much about these things, but she clearly cares for you.”

At that, Katya’s face turned crimson, her embarrassment deepening. “Of course! He’s my friend! It’s only natural!” she shouted, fleeing the room, unable to handle the situation any longer. Despite her embarrassment, she was happy Nova had agreed to continue the journey with her.

Nova watched her leave, feeling a swell of gratitude. “I didn’t know that...” he murmured softly, touched by her concern. While she had seemed distant at first, it was clear that Katya truly cared about the people she valued, which made Nova smile.

“I guess I owe her a thank you,” he said to Sagax, “and you too. Thanks for saving my life.”

The old Mobling shook his head. “No, it’s I who should be thanking you. If the Alpha had died in that fight, it would’ve crushed the village’s morale. I was astonished when he told us what you did. You’re the first person who ever tried to protect him.”

As Sagax continued his work, Nova noticed his wounds were healing much faster than expected.

“Do you think he’s mad at me?” Nova asked cautiously, worried about the Alpha’s reaction.

Sagax stayed silent for a few seconds before responding.

“Warriors are rare, but I highly doubt it. It’s best you talk to him. Once you’re both healed, of course, I don’t want to have to stitch either of you up again.”

The conversation with Sagax eased Nova’s concerns, and the medicine soon lulled him into a peaceful sleep.

----------------------------------------

5 days later

Five more days passed, and Nova’s body made a miraculous recovery. He could now get out of bed, and with the help of a crutch the Moblings had crafted for him, it wasn’t long before he ventured out into the village.

Upon stepping outside the tepee, Nova was met with unexpected warmth. Moblings who had previously ignored him now greeted him as he walked along the dirt and stone roads. Their once-cautious attitude had shifted; now, they seemed comfortable with his presence. Yet despite their kindness, Nova couldn’t shake the feeling that his continued stay endangered them all.

He resolved that as soon as he could stand and walk on his own, he would leave the village with Katya to ensure their safety.

After a short walk, he spotted Katya sitting on a large rock at the edge of the cave, absorbed in her writing. Her brown hair framed her face, catching the soft glow of the afternoon light.

“Look at you, up and walking now,” Katya teased as Nova sat beside her.

“Just wait a bit, and you’ll see me running,” he joked, smiling as he took in the breathtaking view of the village below.

“This world is terrifying, but it’s also beautiful... If I had stayed in Etheria, I never would’ve known this,” Katya said, noticing Nova’s gaze fixed on the village.

“I feel the same way. Despite the danger, it’s worth it,” Nova replied, his smile fading slightly as his thoughts turned serious. “That’s why we have to leave tomorrow.”
