Chapter 3: Unknown Threat Neutralized

Listening to the chirping of crickets and hooting of owls, Kimmi-Ka silently stared up at the full moon surrounded by a white ring among the sparkling sea of stars without a single cloud in the sky. Continuing to stare out the window of the single-storey traditional Japanese countryside house, Kimmi-Ka tightened her grip on the handle of TEoR(in its magnifying glass mode).

"What a coincidence for me to see a full moon only a week after arriving in this reality," Kimmi-Ka mentally muttered as she placed the top of TEoR against her forehead. As Kimmi-Ka remained deep in thought, the door to the spare bedroom opened and Mya poked her head through.

"Kimmi-Ka, Gram-Gram said dinner's ready," Mya said cheerfully. Kimmi-Ka glanced back with her neutral grumpy face before she hopped out of the closed window. Mya made her way through the house, leading Kimmi-Ka by the hand into the living room. Mya abruptly dived forward and slid under the kotatsu at the centre of the room, popping her head out from it with a content cat-like grin. Kimmi-Ka waddled over to the kotatsu and lifted one of its sides. She glanced around the underside of the kotatsu scanning every inch while wondering where the floor grate for covering the heated charcoal could be.

"Come on, Kimmi-Ka, you don't need to check for monsters every time," Mya mumbled poutfully. Kimmi-Ka huffed as she lowered the kotatsu as Aliceia and Feina entered the living room carrying four plates of omelettes. The two placed the plates on the table part of the kotatsu, making Mya emerge from under the kotatsu.

"Hooray for omelette Sunday ~," Mya cheered as she raised her silver fork before digging into her omelette. As the group sat around the kotatsu and began to eat, Feina noticed Kimmi-Ka blankly staring at her omelette.

"Is something wrong, sweetie?" Feina asked worry evident in her voice. Kimmi-Ka shook her head as she picked up her fork and knife.

"No... vine-gar...," Kimmi-Ka mumbled deflatedly as she used her utensils to dissect her omelette into evenly sized cubes. Feina's eyes softened at hearing the reason for Kimmi-Ka's seemingly glum demeanour.

"I apologize for that, I usually only buy one bottle every few weeks and I didn't expect that one to be gone in a single week," Feina remarked, causing Kimmi-Ka to hunch forward at being the sole reason for the vinegar shortage. Aliceia glanced up from the table and noticed Kimmi-Ka's expression.

"It's rather impressive how quickly Kimmi-Ka picked up Nelphaine after only a week, right, Gran-Gran?" Aliceia interjected into the conversation before going back to eating. Feina nodded her head at Aliceia's remark.

"Indeed, I was considering buying some language books for her but she'll probably be fine without them at this rate.". Kimmi-ka lightly sighed as she picked up one of her omelette cubes and ate it without delay, making Felina mentally sigh in relief.

"This Aliceia girl... sure is a thoughtful one... though the same could be said for the rest of this family," Kimmi-Ka thought to herself as the group continued eating dinner.

After the conclusion of dinner and the others dispersed from the kotatsu, Kimmi-Ka remained at the kotatsu and stared at it with a mix of displeasure and grumpiness glued to her face. Kimmi-Ka defeatedly sighed and plopped her butt on the floor as Feina returned to the living room. She noticed Kimmi-Ka poking the kotatsu's blanket with disdain in her eyes.

"Kimmi-Ka sweetie, you know Mya was joking about there being a monster under their right?" Feina stated as she stood beside Kimmi-Ka, making Kimmi-Ka glance up at her.

"I know, but how work though?" Kimmi-Ka said while pointing at the kotatsu.

"Oh, is that why you were acting so oddly around it?" Feina uttered in surprise. Kimmi-Ka nodded as Feina sat down next to her. Feina picked up one of the kotatsu blanket's corners and showed it to Kimmi-Ka.

"Although I don't really know how it works myself, the expert mettamio craftsmen who made it said the blanket heats up thanks to this embroidery here," Feina explained as she pointed at the embroidery, even tapping it to make it glow and activate the kotatsu's heating. Kimmi-Ka tapped the embroidery to make it dim down and stop the kotatsu's heating.

"Oh...," Kimmi-Ka muttered as she raised the TEoR to her face and stared at the embroidery through its lens.

"I can't believe I overlooked such an obvious answer... stumped for a week for thinking it was simple branding," Kimmi-Ka muttered mentally as she continued investigating the embroidery.

Later that night, Kimmi-Ka led on the futon of her spare bedroom with TEoR led next to her on her pillow. Kimmi-Ka defeatedly stared at the ceiling while pouting, her expression still resembling a grumpy one.

"Stupid expert... why'd you have to go and make your product have no leakages for me to examine," Kimmi-Ka grumbled as she rolled onto her side and cuddled TEoR. For a brief moment, she remained still before abruptly opening her eyes in annoyance. She placed a hand on her chest before channelling alchemic lightning through her body.

"Good grief, how am I getting so worked up over not having any vinegar," Kimmi-Ka muttered her voice becoming more groggy as she continued channelling alchemic lightning through her body until the lightning dispersed when she conked out. As Kimmi-Ka soundly slept, a tall reflective figure obscured by the moonlight floated above the village and watched Kimmi-Ka with its neon blue ring-shaped eyes before they merged into a red dot.

"System prerogative... error... unable to connect to the main hub... entering offline mode," the figure said with a deep synthesized male voice before its eyes reverted to its two blue rings. While keeping their vision focused on the house Kimmi-Ka resided in, a sequence of rustling of the nearby trees caused the hooting owls to flee as a low growl was directed at the figure.

The intensity of the growl increased before an elephant-sized dark grey wolf exploded out from the forest, coated in a red glow. The wolf monster lunged at the figure, who seemingly paid the wolf monster no mind. The wolf monster hurled a claw slash at the figure with blinding speed. The wolf monster's claw slashed through the monster before the afterimage of the figure faded away a split second later.

The figure dashed backwards to beside the wolf monster. A dark blue energy blade formed from the figure's black metal hand before the figure spun around and vertically slashed it through the wolf's chest. The wolf's eyes went blank as the red glow faded from its body, splitting in half from where it was slashed. The wolf halves plummeted to the ground and crashed with a slightly audible thud as the figure deactivated its ion energy blade. The figure floated back to its original spot before it resumed watching over Kimmi-Ka.

"Note... this world's energy cannot reside in dead creatures but can in inanimate objects with some form of engraving," the figure stated before it went silent.
