Chapter 2: Night Sliced

With the surging winds rushing through his hair and clothes, Zalroth continued to plummet through the air, his arms and legs crossed in a defiant posture as he watched Lurioku flying down to catch up to him. Zalroth hung his head back, yawning like a cat, as he continued moving his head back until he was staring directly at the approaching dilapidated cityscape below him.

"I thought you were joking when you said appearing from the sky was common," Lurioku remarked as he descended to Zalroth's level. Zalroth half-heartedly chuckled as he uncrossed his arms and legs, and flipped around to an upright position. Zalroth landed on top of a medium-sized broken-glassed skyscraper without a disable of a sound; however, Lurioku landed on a cracked segment of the roof before it crumbled and he plummeted into the skyscraper.

At hearing the crumbling concrete, Zalroth glanced backwards and exhaustedly sighed before Lurioku floated/phased through the concrete roof and settled his feet on the floor. Lurioku slammed his fists together before cracks formed all over his body with a cracking sound, and antimatter shards bursted off his body, revealing a more human appearance. The antimatter shards swirled around Lurioku and formed into clothing.

(Lurioku has shoulder-low dark purple hair with moving pitch-black dots surrounded by bold glowing azure blue outline, maroon pink eyes with black scleras, and tanned skin with antimatter finger-tips)

(Lurioku is wearing a pitch-black plain sleeveless jumpsuit, antimatter fur trousers, and three antimatter bracelets on each forearm)

"Do you think we should intervene?" Zalroth asked as he peered over the side of the skyscraper. Lurioku raised his arms over his head before cartwheeling and bombastically front-flipping into the air. After doing multiple overdramatic mid-air spins, he landed next to Zalroth, making Zalroth playfully roll his eyes at Lurioku. The duo peered over the side of the skyscraper, and hundreds of meters below, they saw a truck-dwarfing legless lizard with four large arms, spine-protruding spikes, and a crocodile head rampaging through the streets.

"It's not an aether construct, but it would-," Lurioku said before Zalroth lowered his head and amusedly exhaled.

"But it would be wrong of us to not help those in need," Zalroth said while replicating Lurioku's voice with a mocking tone added on.

A howling snarl bellowed from the lizard monster as it slammed its fist down and crushed a car, making the car explode. The explosion flung debris into the air, and a super short figure flipped through the dust cloud before the teenager bursted through it and landed gracefully on her feet.

(The super short teen is a tanned beeling[a humanoid with bee features]; she has shoulder-low poofy extremely curly hair, white eyes with a faint compound texture on her scleras, tan lines, four bee wings[top two are black and bottom two are], slightly wide hips and thighs, a head-sized fuzzy black and white bee-abdomen-looking tail with a fur bee stinger, and long white bee antenna on top of her head)

(The teen is wearing baggy black hiking shorts with black suspenders over her shoulders, a dark cyan fur shirt, black thigh highs, and dark cyan crocks)

The female teen heavily exhaled through her nose as she glared at the raging lizard monster. The teen raised her hand while holding a dark cyan energy-playing card with black borders. The lizard monster reeled a fist back and hurled it at the teen as she raised the card to her face.

"Vectors do not exist," the teen whispered into the card, making it flicker for a second. The teen glanced at the lizard monster, scoffing at it before tossing the card at its flying fist. The energy card tapped against the monster's fist before an energy bubble popped out from the card and encased the monster's fist. The fist froze in its tracks causing the lizard monster to involuntarily hoist its body forward.

"All oxygen undergoes nuclear fission," the girl uttered before one of her energy cards floated in front of the lizard monster's face. Out from the card, a large energy bubble formed around the monster's head before the bubble lit up like a scorching sun and flooded the area with a blinding light.

"Did that attack make us match?" Zalroth remarked with a faint chuckle.

"No, I can still see," Lurioku retorted as he frantically rubbed practically pupilless eyes while Zalroth snickered at his expense.

The blinding light faded, revealing the decapitated lizard monster with a sphere-shaped hole where it had previously resided. The monster's body swayed to the side before slumping to the ground and bursting into a cloud of greenish-grey energy particles. The teen poutfully huffed, crossing her arms, as her tail let out a faint buzzing noise.

"With this assignment completed I'll be promoted," the teen uttered before she jumped into the air, avoiding the arm swipe of a much smaller lizard monster. The girl clicked her tongue at the monster and axe-kicked it in the head as she dropped back to the ground. The second monster's body bursted into particles. The girl swiped her hands over her face and clothes, dusting off the particles covering her body as her phone began to ring. She took her smartphone out of her tail and brought the phone to her ear.

"What did I tell you about using flashy attacks on this request, Tsusakia?" the annoyed striked-sounding woman asked over the phone. Tsusakia puffed up her cheeks and turned her head.

"If there wasn't a monster triple the size mentioned in the request, then I wouldn't have needed to," Tsusakia grumbled as she slumped her head, "Besides, what's the matter if I'm by myself?". The woman on the phone groaned.

"Because an SS-Ranked wyvern was spotted in the area, so a bright light might startle it," the woman on the phone stated as a looming shadow crept over Tsusakia. A single drop of sweat ran down Tsusakia's face as her antennae slumped over her eyes like deflated balloons.

"It wouldn't happen to be a night slicer, as in the ninja of wyverns," Tsusakia whispered with a shaky voice. The woman defeatedly sighed before telling Tsusakia she'd have other agents sent to her location to rescue her. Tsusakia grumbled at needing to be rescued before slowly turning her head to see the originator of the looming shadow.

A towering wyvern covered in reflective black scales, which gleamed from the rays of the sun as a dark mist seeped out from its scales and mouth. Tsusakia took an apprehensive step back from the wyvern as it stared her down with its beady red eyes. Its eyes twitched before the wyvern swung its head upwards and screeched to the heavens.

Tsusakia covered her ears as a pounding ringing drummed through them before the wyvern hurled its fang-readied head at her. Tsusakia staggered background as she frantically pulled a bundle of energy cards out of her tail as the wyvern drew closer. From an afterimage, Zalroth appeared in front of the wyvern before he reeled his fist back and uppercutted the wyvern in the chin, severing its head from the neck and sending it flying into a nearby skyscraper.

"Whoops...," Zalroth uttered as he landed on the ground, followed by the headless wyvern bursting into red energy particles. As Zalroth stared at his hand and repeatedly clasped his fingers, Tsusakia blankly stared at the energy particles floating into the air with her mouth slightly agape.

"Tsusakia? What was that noise?" the woman on the phone asked, her voice snapping Tsusakia out of her dazed state. She brought her phone to her face as she dropped her energy cards back into her tail.

"Erm... some guy just appeared and knocked the head off of the night slicer in one punch?" Tsusakia uttered perplexedly. The woman on the phone was silent aside from the sound of clicking filling said silence.

"Was the wyvern injured beforehand?".

"No?" Tsusakia uttered. The woman on the phone groaned before asking Tsusakia to FaceTime her and show her Zalroth. Tsusakia rolled her eyes as she tapped her phone before flipping the phone to its normal camera lenses, showing Zalroth as he held a small-cannonball-sized opaque purple crystalline sphere in his hand.

"And before you ask, Naonako, I don't think he's a member of the Dark Shrouds... what do mean I should try and recruit him, isn't he the guy you sent to deal with the night slicer?" Tsusakia whispered to her phone.

"Don't you think I'd know of anyone, other than the knight general, in the kingdom who'd be able to defeat an SS-Rank monster in a single attack?!" Naonako said with an agitated tone. Tsusakia silently grumbled to herself as she hung up, stuffing her phone into her tail while whining about all the extra hassle she'd been given.

"So, you wanna recruit me, do ya?" Zalroth asked smugly as he spun the crystalline orb on the tip of his finger like a basketball. Tsusakia flinched at realising Zalroth probably heard the whole conversation, but she shook her head to remove the nerves from her body.

"It's not like I want to, but I'll get an ear full if I don't at least try," Tsusakia grumbled before pouting and turning her head to the side. Zalroth snickered, making Tsusakia glance back at him as he turned to face her.

"What's so funny, wise guy?" Tsusakia asked snarkily.

"Nothing, you just reminded me of someone, is all," Zalroth remarked before effortlessly tossing the crystalline orb to Tsusakia. Tsusakia tracked the sphere with her antennae while staring at Zalroth before she raised a hand. Zalroth raised a hand to say something as he watched the trajectory of the orb.

"I wou-". Before Zalroth could finish his sentence, the orb arched past her hand, slamming against the top of her head and sitting there. She rigidly lowered her head from the intense weight of the crystalline orb before Zalroth plucked it off her head, making Tsusakia swing her head, and fall backwards onto her butt.

"I forgot S-Ranked and above abstracta orbs are freakishly heavy," Tsusakia mumbled as she rubbed and repeatedly clicked her neck when she moved it. Tsusakia, using her tail, pushed herself to her feet and brushed off her clothes. She crossed her arms and glared at Zalroth, as he was tossing the abstracta orb between his hands.

"You know that thing's absorbing your abstracta energy," Tsusakia muttered as Zalroth caught the abstracta orb in one of his hands.

"Then there shouldn't be an issue then, since I don't have any for it to take," Zalroth remarked jokingly. Tsusakia silently stared at Zalroth before she scratched the sides of her head.

"Then it would be taking your life force as a substitute if you were a monster.".

"That so?". Zalroth turned his hand upside down and let go of the abstracta orb. The orb raced to the ground with the weight of a neutron star as it pierced through the ground as if it were melted butter. The duo, with Lurioku floating high in the sky, peered their heads over the hole and watched as the glinting orb continued to sink further into the earth.

"I'm glad you didn't try to toss it to me again," Tsusakia uttered nervously as she glanced up at Zalroth. Zalroth nodded before he snapped his fingers and, from a pale golden flash of light, the abstracta orb reappeared in his hand.

"So, are these like those things from Chinese cultivation manhuas?" Zalroth asked.

"You know the Chinese part is redundant, right?".

"Like chai tea?".

"Duh," Tsusakia said snarkily before sticking her tongue at Zalroth. Zalroth rolled his eyes as he thought he must be on some version of Earth since Tsusakia confirmed China's existence.

"Given I'm a little lost, and as repayment for unintentionally hurting you, I'll give you this orb thingy and also agree to go through this recruitment thing you mentioned," Zalroth offered as he held out the orb to Tsusakia. Tsusakia went mentally numb at hearing Zalroth's offer before the imagery of fireworks filled silence within her mind until she snapped back to reality.

"You're just giving it away!" Tsusakia blurted out in utter shock, making Zalroth shrug in response.

"Not much use to a guy who can't use astractio energy, right?" Zalroth stated. Tsusakia raised a hand and was about to speak but paused as a thought occurred to her.

"Yes?" Zalroth asked as he tilted his head to the side. Tsusakia let out a half-hearted huff as she turned on her heel.

"It's nothing. I accept your terms, Mr Whatever-Kind-of-Kitsune-You-Are," Tsusakia said as she placed a hand on the abstracta orb, making her faintly blush. The orb cracked before bursting into particles and swirled into Tsusakia's body, making her body shiver. The second the particles were gone, Tsusakia took her hand away from Zalroth.

"Alright, shall we get going, Little Miss?" Zalroth asked. Tsusakia silently stared down Zalroth with a death glare. She swung around on the spot and marched off. Zalroth scratched his head as he trotted after Tsusakia.

"Did I say something wrong?". Tsusakia tightened the grip of one of her hands before she heavily exhaled.

"Shut up! I just bit my tongue or something.". Zalroth put a puzzled/perplexed look on his face at hearing Tsusakia's response.

"Or something?" Zalroth uttered amusedly in his head.

"Want me to split and search for the aether constructs while you're messing around?" Lurioku asked telepathically with a mocking tone. Zalroth rolled his eyes, mentally sighing as he walked.

"Look, I'm not messing around. I'm just checking out if the people of this world have seen any of the aether constructs," Zalroth replied telepathically.

"Sure, and I'm totally not going to make a secret base," Lurioku stated. Zalroth sighed as he sensed Lurioku teleport away before he heard Tsusakia telling him to hurry up and get in her car.
