Behind the dunes

Behind the dunes

He tried to blink, but to no avail. His horizon was still a blur. David tried to scrub his eyes, but that had no effect.

As he stood up, he felt a certain numbness, as if thousands of the finest needles were poking at his skin. No pain though. There was no pain whatsoever on his entire body. Only numbness and confusion.

As soon as he was standing on his own two feet, he noticed more people doing the same. They were all getting up at the same time, as if his sight was a mirror. He saw faces of strangers, with expressions of confusion. Scratching their heads. Standing to their feet and shaking the sand off themselves. There must have been at least 20 people spread across. Probably more. All distant from each other. No one right next to the other. Some women, some men, some kids.

From his rear stood the ocean and on his front, dunes along the coastline. Behind the dunes, to the left, stood a beacon. It wasn't kept, but it wasn't old. Parts of the paint had peeled, uncovering some of its true colour grey, darker than the sky on that day.

To his right, he noticed a group forming. He decided to approach them. Maybe they'd know what had happened, where they were, why they were there.

"H-how is that even possible?", asked a blonde woman.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

"I have no idea", started a man with a green t-shirt, "but the fact is that no one seems to remember how they've got here."

"I have no pain whatsoever, no wounds, nothing! How could we just magically appear here?", demanded the blonde woman.

"Hey, you there! Do you remember how you've got here?", directed the men in the green t-shirt to David.

"Err, no... No, not at all.", responded David.

"Are you sure? Nothing?", persisted the men in the green t-shirt.

"No, nothing... My first memory is waking up here just moments ago. What about you guys?"

"Nothing!", vented out the blonde lady.

"No one does. No one remembers anything since they've woken up here.", answered the men in the green t-shirt.

"What will we do? We don't remember anything, we don't know where we are. We don't even know who we are!", screamed the blond lady.

"Ok, let's all be calm", interrupted a woman in a yellow tank top, speaking to everyone, "there's no point in panicking. There's nothing to gain, it doesn't improve our situation, in fact, it only makes it worse."

David was unsure on what to do too. He felt small. He had no answers. But should he really freeze and just blindly follow the others after they've decided? Or should he take action? From deep down, he felt a sense of urgency to do something, to take action.

"Hey, guys, there's a beacon up there. Maybe there's some answers there."

"Couldn't hurt trying...", says the men in the green t-shirt.

"And even if there aren't any answers, at least we'll have shelter. It's going to get dark eventually."

While all the others on the beach stayed, they formed a group and decided to go for the beacon.
