Chapter 3

Chapter 3

I walked to my next class distracted as memories played through my mind, most of them of Ella.

As I was about to enter the classroom something caught my attention at the end of the hall. There was a kid standing there he was dressed all in black and had a pale complexion but what had drawn my eyes was the Dark Aura surrounding the kid.

'Akia' the thought curled through my mind like a snake as I walked towards him.

Both the Akia and the Alphas emit what we call a Dark Aura. The Akia is distorted with a red color, The Alphas are tinged in blue, and humans have a Light Aura it always seems to glow white around the edges.

His eyes widened as he saw me then his face contorted into a sneer. His eyes glowed a magenta color as I approached, Mine reflexively glowing gold in response.

I now stood five feet from him; my hands were heating up the longer I stood next to him. I needed to hurry this along.

"Who are you?" I practically spat the words at him.

"It doesn't matter," he said back with just as much venom in his voice. "I'm leaving, I thought this territory wasn't claimed yet."

"I'll be gone in a month." I said back, forcing my eyes to return to normal, I couldn't afford to fight him in the middle of the hall. "if you come back then it will be open."

His eyes turned back to brown and he nodded forcibly and walked backwards out of the doors behind him.

I finally walked back to my class and went straight to the back.

I was late but Mr. Light didn't seem to care. I pulled my book out and began to think of the Potentials.

'The Akia is going to force me to accelerate my plans.' I thought as my frustration built. 'I wanted to wait a bit longer before approaching them but it looks like that's out the window. I'll still talk to them individually but why did he have to show up now?

'I'll approach Sara first.' I decided.

"Mrs. Drew?" Mr. Light stood in front my desk his shadow falling partially over the desk.

"Yes." I responded to the fake name. "since you were late and don't seem to care about the lesson why don't you answer today's pop question."

Apparently, he had decided to care.

"I'm ready." I said

"what was the purpose of mummifying the dead in Egypt?" he asked smugly

"That depends sir" I said smirking "The literal reason was to preserve the bodies, at first they used sand pits which dehydrated the remains naturally but animals would dig up the remains so they began to lay bricks on top of the pit and eventually this led to the pyramids. The Egyptians however saw a spiritual purpose believing that if the body was destroyed then you were destroyed in the afterlife as well."

He looked kind of annoyed to see that I knew what I was talking about.

"Well, umm, yes that's right." he backtracked "You should still be paying attention," He began.

"Look," I said interrupting " whether I'm staring at the board or my book I'm still going to be giving you the same amount of attention. Plus, I won't be here for much longer, I'm transferring soon anyway and when it comes to history I was going to pass anyway. You should be teaching the rest of the class rather than wasting time harassing me."

Of course I was sitting in the office with the Principal about ten minutes later listening to how I shouldn't be treating my teachers this way and I should be respecting my elders.

I almost lost it when he said that, I had been alive for much longer that this man could even fathom. I know that I had been alive longer than most of my kind and it still kind of made me feel strange thinking back on my life, there are a few others that are older but not many were left after the battle.

He let me go after assigning an hour’s detention at 10 AM Saturday morning. I Grabbed my bag and headed to my next class I knew that Ms. Rico my Art teacher wouldn't care if I showed up early.

I walked in to the class nodding a hello to her. I grabbed the picture I had been working on and sat down at an empty table and began to work on the scene before me. It was an image of England split in half, the right side shows it as it was during the 1600s on the left is how it is now I wish that I had actually been there to see it.

The next period started with Mrs. Rico standing over my shoulder watching me work.

"You have a real eye for art." She said suddenly "I wish you would submit it for the competition on Monday."

I couldn't tell her that as much as I would love to. I couldn't risk the exposure. Sure, the Akia I saw today had backed off but there are others just as old as I am that remember that I was the one to end their original master, their Creator. Many are still looking for me I've managed to stay off their radar but it was only a matter of time.

"I honestly just don't care about the competition," I told her not really lying "I don't care how I measure up to other people's works, I think as long as they matter to the person it doesn't matter how good or bad others think it is."

"I know and I admire you for that," She said kindly " I think it's great, just for the record."

I smiled slightly I actually liked this teacher she seemed like she actually wanted others to improve rather than to make herself look good. Which is becoming far too common in this era.

...

I waited till the end of the day before approaching Sara.

She was standing by a tree in the front yard of the school staring at something on the ground.

"Hey," I said walking up to her "what are you looking at?"

She jumped slightly when I had spoken but calmed after a second.

"Oh," she said "It's you, good" We stood there awkwardly as she stared at me. Then just when I was wondering whether I should ask again she suddenly seemed to remember I asked her a question.

"Right" she said "Um, it's a knife" I looked closer at it, a standard pocket knife I had seen a million like it since waking up,

"Yes" I said confused "but why are you just looking at it?"

"Because I'm not sure what to do about It" she said turning towards me "I can't exactly take it to the lost and found and it's the end of the day, so I'm trying to figure out whether I should leave it or not."

"Well anyway leave that I want to talk to you for a second" I said

She looked at it for a second longer then nodded and stepped away from it.

"What's up?" she asked

I started towards the parking lot with Sarah at my side.

"Do you believe in magic," I asked her

Her footsteps stuttered causing me to stop

"Kind of" She said "it's complicated"

"What do you mean" I asked genuinely surprised I was expecting a no or at worst a laugh.

"Don't laugh at me," she said

"I wouldn't have asked you if I was just going to ignore you." I said

"Ok" She took a breath and stood slightly taller "I think it exists, yes but not like how the movies show, I think it's like energy, you know like electricity but that it can be used by some people while others can't."

"You're not far off" I replied "you are right but there are other factors to consider"

"How would you know?" she asked

I looked around then grinned, my eyes glowed and fire burst from my palm hovering above it

"Trust me I would know, I'm an Alpha."
