Prologue: The Fall

The world seemed to be on fire.

Rubble flew across the sky and rained down upon them. Houses were crushed, smoke and dust kicked up in plumes by the minute. Screams filled the air, some of fear, some of pain, all of suffering.

Above them, a towering figure stared them down. Smoke billowed from it, as if some sort of shroud, covering it's thick sinewy body. It had no skin, only having exposed muscles. It's eyes were blank and listless, as if watching ants scurry around their hills.

Jason stood there, watching the scene unfold. The people were evacuating, nearly trampling him over as they scrambled to reach the inner wall. Several people lay dead, crushed by the debris falling down everywhere. He could see a few of them trying to rescue their loved ones, or what remained of them anyway. The scent of blood was thick in the air already. A few of the townspeople were hobbling away, limbs crushed or twisted in many odd angles.

He felt a hand grip his shoulder. He whirled around and saw his parents. His mother was shaking, beads of sweat dripping from her face. He could faintly hear their voices.

"Jason! Jason, listen to me. We have to leave now while-" his father was cut off, a giant boulder landing a few feet away from where they were.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

"We have to leave now! The walls have been breached. Move, Jason. We can't afford to waste time." his father continued while dragging him away.

Jason took one last look at the giant Titan that was peering above them. The steam seemed to have gotten even stronger around it. Perhaps it was the adrenaline of the whole ordeal. Perhaps it just took a while to sink in. But as Jason stared at the Titan and its towering size, he felt a lump form in his throat.

He was afraid.

They hurried away from the site of the wreckage. Heaving and panting, they ran straight through their old neighborhood. The dead lay around them, most of them crushed within the remains of their houses. Jason spared a glance at one of them and felt himself get sick. The blood pooling beneath the entrails was a haunting sight, one that he would remember forever.

Ahead, they saw someone leading the rest of the civilians away. He wore a green hood, and on his back, a crest adorned it. A pair of roses.

"Hey! You're from the Garrison Regiment, aren't you?" his father called out. The soldier looked behind and waved at them. The family ran to where the soldier was. As the soldier and his father spoke, Jason looked back at the wall and froze.

"Dad. They're coming in."

His father spun around, and his eyes widened. Titans, several of them. Giant, lumbering beasts, with the strangest expressions on their faces. Some were smiling, some were angry, some were grinning maniacally. A few of them towered over all the buildings. A couple of smaller ones, over 6 meters tall walked about checking every corner.

"The Titans have breached the gate." the soldier said with a grim expression. "You, you have to go. The Garrison Regiment will hold them off until you all escape. Get on a boat quick, and leave."
