Volume 06 - Chapter 09 - Kal's Calm

Volume 06 - Chapter 09 - Kal's Calm

Kal paced back and forth in the captured Seocurian house. Her boots thumped on the wood, occasionally a slightly loose floorboard creaked in the otherwise silent house, but she barely heard it. Her pacing was an attempt to keep herself calm. And she was failing miserably.

What the fuck do I say? Glad we got you out after freeing everyone else for almost a season. Oh, by the way, I’m pregnant with Anton’s child, who is my Human husband which happened just after rescuing everyone else, so is Verona, and we’re… We’re having just the best time while you’re addicted to Purple Shade and literally falling apart?

Kal groaned, more squeaked, and felt her ears pull down underneath the head wrapping.

“The hell do I say?”

Kal’s heart nearly stopped when a hand grabbed her shoulder. Immediately she knew it came from someone taller than herself, from the angle of the hand itself and the lack of weight pulling on her. As Anton was out and Rasha was still in Atros that left Cetina.

"The truth, I suppose." Cetina spoke softly. Her voice wasn't as deep as Verona's but it was deeper than most women. "I… I think that's what I'd want to hear."

Kal managed a faint smile. “Maybe not everything.”

Cetina returned the smile and gave her shoulder a gentle pat. Kal thought she had a decent understanding of the Bebbezzarian swordswoman. A strong, skilled and exceedingly loyal fighter with the seemingly rare ability to read and write, more than what she could say of Verona, she would do whatever it took to help those she cared for.

I just wish that she’d learn to keep a little more quiet at night. My ears ring some mornings, even after we’ve shut her up with a kiss. Not a bad kisser, actually…

Kal silently admonished herself for thinking such thoughts while Lucia was still not safe. She peered through the window. Anton and the cart still weren’t visible, nor the Dark Elves they had asked to join them. She scratched her face, feeling the faint sweat staining her fingers.

“What are you doing there?” A young voice asked. “I… I don’t think that belongs to you.”

Kal allowed the curtain to drop. The voice belonged to Axia, sitting on a couch with her legs tucked underneath her while holding her staff and Charm close to her chest. She and her mother had been brought along with the Dark Elves as additional help. The differences between the two were as pronounced as the difference between the magics they used. Mezot, Ice and Water, was near silent, certainly content to remain silent for days at a time while she delved through books and magical times. Axia, Fire and Flame, was exuberant and outgoing, able to strike up a conversation with anyone. Always happy and willing to help, especially for her mother.

Kal saw through the mask Axia wore.

It was strong and thick, built over many cycles, built to defend her from loneliness, frustration and abuse from those that wished to harm her mother through her. It was one she wore willingly, to keep her mother happy.

I just had to keep my sanity wandering the wilderness on my own for over twenty cycles… A lot of talking to myself.

Kal touched the rough Tethra silver medallion underneath her clothes. The simple act brought a warmth to her heart.

“It belongs to the Seocurian.” Another voice said.

The second voice was from a Dark Elf, gentle but deep, as he and a handful of his Clan rummaged through the collected jewelry and gold they had gathered. Despite the relative size difference he didn’t try and loom over her, nor take any type of aggressive or intimidating stance, despite the desire. Kal could see it; the tiny twitch on the corners of his eyes, the faint grinding of his teeth when Axia’s slim fingers tapped the simple wooden staff while a finger picked at one of the tiny cracks.

The Dark Elf sighed and pulled away from the piles of gold. “And after that Anton had them brought back the way they were, I don’t think they’re going to need any of this.”

“I didn’t see them.” Axia pulled her legs tighter underneath her rear. “But they aren’t yours. At least yet.”

Mezot was completely uninterested, rather unaware, of what was happening as she rummaged through a bookcase. Her interest in magic was the only thing that made her… alert, excited.

“Atros doesn’t have an economy.” Cetina said calmly, resting a hand on sword, something she did with a peculiar regularity. “Not yet. Zuhura’s helping to set it up. But until then there’s no point.”

“We could always use a head start?” The Dark Elf smiled, picked up one of the smaller golden coins while keeping an eye on Axia, one she returned without moving or blinking. “It’s still going to be gold, right? Along with silver and copper. We can melt all this down when it’s time. And until then we could always sell it somewhere else and buy important goods. I hear that Alcanares is the place where we buy things.”

Cetina’s metal gauntlet grated against the metal pommel of her sword. Tiny imperfections clicked and grated, catching on ridges before slipping and clunking against the next. Kal’s eyes were drawn to the green tassel on his neck. The sign of the Green Moon Clan, the Clan of Calo and Sheso, a Clan of pirates, smugglers and thieves. While the twins were lovely and kind Kal knew the rest would be just as good and as bad as everyone else. And that meant there would always be someone stupid enough to push their luck.

Maybe Leran sent him just to see how we’d react.

Kal could not see the lean and strong muscles she expected to see from a trained Dark Elf. Rather soft and modestly plump underneath his loose clothes.

Definitely not someone he’d care to lose.

“I'm sure Leran would be delighted to know you were more interested in gold than completing the mission. A mission that involves the safety of the man that was willing to give your Clan another chance."

The Dark Elf pulled back. Muscles tensed and a finger began to point to his belt, to the handle of a stubby, short dagger.

That's just a reaction, not intent. At least for now.

"Half of the gold there for your Clan." Kal returned to the window and peered out. "Nothing with gemstones, and we double check everything. The rest is yours."

The Dark Elf smiled, as did those beside him. He gave a curt nod and began to rummage and divide the spoils before him.

"How much do we have in those chests?" Cetina softly asked. "More than this, surely."

"Let them fight over that little puddle. It'll keep them happy. I'm not worried."

"Neither am I." Cetina folded her arms. Arms that were strong enough to wrestle with Anton, and her if they were in the right mood. "But it'll look bad for us if they think we'll just let them take what they want. And it'll spread through the city and their Clans."

"We'll let them have this. They'll say that we're reasonable and generous. Not that it matters. We still have the silver mine, not to mention what Rasha's talking about with the Oni’s. A whole mine of Benzonite and Tanz… Oh. Oh fuck."

Kal's chest tightened as she saw Anton leading the cart, standing next to the lumbering Ix with Verona by his side.

"Oh God." Kal gripped her chest. "Oh shit. It's actually happening…"

"Breathe." Cetina held her shoulders. "Breathe, Kal. You'll be fine."

"I-"

"It's early for your contractions to start.” Mezot had genuine concern on her face, so serious that Kal forgot to be worried. The golden ornament that encircled her ear glinted in the faint light. “Far too soon… But I’ve heard that-”

“I’m not giving birth.” Kal managed a strained laugh. “Honestly, Mezot. I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine.” Mezot poke perfectly flatly.

“No…” Kal looked through the window again. “No I am not.”

Mezot did not know how to respond, so she remained silent. Kal stood watching until the cart alongside the building. Dark Elves moved the barricade and brought it through. She and Cetina briskly moved to the door, Kal clenching her fists to calm herself.

A Dark Elf opened the door. Kal dared not exit, just in case someone saw.

“It all went off without a hitch.” Anton said. The slight crackle to his voice was a little odd; she didn’t entirely mind it. His smile was still the same, and that’s what mattered most. “Not a single issue.”

“Until the Seocurians discover what happened.” This crackling voice came from the White Spear resting on top of the cart. Kal had already surmised that Longinious did not like being carried in such a way, she would only enjoy being carried by Anton. “But we should be gone by then.”

The barricade was replaced and reinforced with other pieces of junk and cloth. A pair of Dark Elves pulled back the cloth covering the cart and two shimmering silhouettes emerged. Calo and Sheso, the only Dark Elves to have wavy hair, pulled back their hoods as they touched the ground. Seeing two disembodied heads was certainly unsettling but Kal had come to expect strange things after living in Atros. Living in the Graterian and Seocurian countryside was tough but nowhere near as odd.

Calo and Sheso stepped to the side. They clearly wanted to say something, how their mission went and what they had experienced, but waited. They knew what was about to happen.

A Dark Elf offered his hand to something, someone, still hidden by the cloth. His offer wasn’t taken and he stepped back. Kal’s heart stopped once again as Lucia emerged. Thin, trembling hands gripped the edge and pulled herself forward. Her eyes hurriedly scanned her surroundings, ears pulled low and tail between her legs. Lucia had no real understanding of what was happening to her.

"I…" Kal bit her lip. She wanted to shout her name, now that she was so close, but she knew she could not.

Another Beast-kin began to emerge, Lucia's son, but Kal didn't see him. Lucia's wandering eyes finally met hers. Time felt like it had completely halted. So many emotions and memories swirled through her head.

"L-Lucia?" Kal finally squeaked. "Is… Is… "

Lucia was nudged forward by Verona. She didn't glance back, took a few shaky steps before breaking into a sprint. Tears flooded Lucia’s face as it contorted in happiness, sadness, regret, relief and a hundred other emotions Kal could not even begin to hope to describe. It was only then did she feel the wetness running down her face. She didn't need to touch them to know they were her own tears. Still she could not move. Cetina gave her the push she needed and her legs came to life once more. She barely managed to extend her arms before Lucia collided with her chest. The thought of her growing baby flashed through her mind, she could only thank the Old Gods that Lucia had missed her.

First came the smell, the smell of someone she had thought lost. Lucia's arms wrapped around her shoulders and dug in hard. Had she always been so short?

"I can't believe you're alive." Lucia whimpered into her chest. The sound, the tone and every little treble of her voice made Kal twitch. "You… You. After all this time… You're actually…"

Kal returned the hold. "I thought you were gone. Lost…"

Kal choked on her tears and simply cried, cried as she scrunched her eyes tight, feeling the warm water cascade down her face and held Lucia as tight as she could.

—[]---

“I can’t believe you’re actually alive.” Lucia sniffed hard, a faint wetness covered the fine fur beneath her nose. “I was sure you were dead.”

“It wasn’t easy.” Kal smiled and placed a hand on her head. For the briefest moment Lucia looked terrified she was about to be struck. Kal’s heart dropped. She knew that fear, but it had been some time since that. “But you’re safe. You're safe.”

“I…” Lucia began another sniffing session.

Kal gently rubbed her shoulders. To her side the Dark Elves and Anton were discussing the distribution of the captured gold. His agreement was far more generous than Kal's so they were extremely happy. Of course Anton wanted more work from them in the future, which they were more than happy to promise. Calo and Sheso stood to the side with Lux, Lucia's son, and spoke rather amicably. Mezot was still searching the bookcase while Axia watched Lux with a curious expression, gently tapping the wood of her staff.

"I'm so sorry." Lucia raised a trembling hand. "I… I can't stop shaking…"

Kal held her hand and the trembling stopped.

"Your hands are still so big." Lucia squeaked out as she took another sniff. "I… I don't know what to say. What I should do." She looked towards her son, still talking with the Twins. "I didn't really believe what he said. No one would ever risk their lives to save one of us, certainly not Humans. And yet…"

Explaining Qinos and his family will certainly be difficult.

"What do we do now?"

Lucia's expression was one Kal had seen too many times after the first group of Beast-kin were brought to Atros. The empty and vacant look, not from despair or tragedy, but total lack of guidance and direction. To come from a life where all they'd known were harsh orders to complete freedom was not an easy adjustment. Kal's fur on her ears pricked and rose up; for her it had been adapt or die, and many before her had died.

"Firstly, we'll go home. Where, oh." Kal pulled back, placing her hands on Lucia's shoulders. "Do you remember Marion? My mother? She's there…"

Lucia was a moment away from bursting into tears. “I… I said horrible things to her. After you…” Lucia looked down, scrunching her eyes tight. “I was using more Purple Shade than I ever had but…”

She shook her head. “She’d hit me, for what I said.” Lucia looked down. “And… And I think I deserve it.”

“That was an extremely long time ago-”

“I sold her!” Lucia’s shrill voice cracked, those in the room snapped their heads towards her. “I was there when she was sold, and even said… Do you know that was the last time I was on the stage? They were so happy that I made them so much gold… Then Rafiki learned that she was gone and-”

Lucia continued to talk but Kal couldn’t hear her. Her mind had instantly traveled back over twenty cycles, to when she was still in Danafra. To the smell of his mansion, the feel of the carpet between her toes, with a seemingly infinite number of corridors. Finally the vase. A simple white vase, tumbling to the ground. The high pitched shatter echoed in her mind. Lucia appeared next, as she was dragged down a black corridor, smiling and gently waving, with blood running down her nose and a blackened eye, as two Seocurians suspended her underneath her arms and pulled her towards a new type of hell that she leapt into, in place of her.

“Kal?” Lucia’s voice cut through the terrible thoughts. “Are… What’s wrong?”

Kal shuddered and held Lucia’s hands which no longer trembled. “Please. Please don’t mention that man’s name again. My mother, even she-"

"I understand." Lucia nodded. "I’m sorry I said it. I won't… But he's still alive."

Her eyes traveled to Calo and Sheso, still talking with Lux.

Not for too much longer.

Beside them was Anton. He wore his concentrating face as Lux pointed to his back. Lux removed the blood-stained cloak and pulled his long ears to the side. Lucia's hands tightened as Anton looked at his back, slowly nodding.

"Who… Who’s his father?” Kal immediately regretted her words. Not every Beast-kin child was wanted. “Is…”

“I don’t know his name.” Lucia murmured. She looked fondly at Lux. When he saw her looking he smile, a warmth she didn’t expect to see. “I was only with him long enough for him to perform the deed. After that they took him away. He didn’t seem happy with it, nor sad. Just like-”

“It was a job.” Kal said softly.

Lucia faintly smiled. “Yeah. When they found out I was pregnant, I never saw him again. I didn’t ask, not that he tried to hurt me.” Lucia sighed. “Must have been expensive for them. I think they brought him all the way from Frindal. I heard that’s a long way.”

Kal thought of Zuhura, the Frindal woman with her bright and striking blue and purple shawl, then of the Hamtaro’s rescued from the Arena and certain extinction. She almost cracked a smile as the thought of Midas and Lucia holding hands, Midas held almost a foot off the ground, then of the Feral Beast-kin that lived as slaves of the Lamia.

“Guess we don’t have an easy life anywhere.” Kal softly murmured. “Until someone decided to change that.”

“Hello.” A familiar voice brought a much needed warmth to Kal’s heart. Her ears perked up and her bound tail wished to sway free. Lucia frowned slightly as she saw Kal’s honest smile, something that couldn’t be faked.

“How’s it going?” Anton asked. He had a nervousness to him, though he was usually like this when dealing with potentially touchy subjects. It took Marion directly telling him not to act like when dealing with the new Beast-kin, but the intention still warmed her heart.

“Good.” Kal gave Lucia’s hand a squeeze. “Very good. Lucia, this is Anton. He’s my… He’s my Husband.”

“A Human?” Lucia could not hide her disgust, nor when she looked at Kal’s stomach. “So that’s…”

“I’m carrying Anton’s child, yes. And so is Verona.”

Verona was talking, or trying to talk, with Mezot but gave them a wave. It was strange to see Verona becoming increasingly incensed that she was completely ignored by Mezot. Kal knew it was something that energetic silver haired woman needed from time to time.

“I…”

“It’s complicated.” Kal smiled. “But it’s fine. So, Anton. What’s happening?”

“I’ve had a quick talk with your son, Lux.”

Lucia’s hand gripped Kal’s ever tighter.

“And he seems like a very good kid.” Anton pursed his lips for just a moment. “And while I think it’s best that you both travel to Atros there is something that I need him for.”

“He’s just a boy.” Lucia’s eyes narrowed. “My son. And I don’t want him taken away from me.”

Lux’s large floppy ears twitched, he said something to Calo and Sheso before scampering towards them. Axia’s eyes followed him. She frowned heavily when her eyes rested on his rear and the small fluffy tail twitching above his pant-line.

“Mum. This is what I dreamt the other night.” Lux’s face beamed with pride, with hope and a sense of purpose. “Master Anton said that he knows-”

“Not Master.” Anton nervously raised his hand, Kal only then realized that Longinious was still in her Spear Form and utterly silent. “I’d prefer that sort of thing to go to the grave.”

“Um… Uncle Anton-”

Anton gave a tiny shrug.

“-said that he knew the woman that I saw in my dream. Fliodher, the Goddess of the Hunt.” Lux pointed to his back. Kal saw the Glyph etched into his skin beneath his fur, quite a large one at. “And he wants to do what she told me that I’d help with.”

“I…” Lucia blinked. “Where are you taking him? We’ve only just escaped…”

Because of us? So you think you’re not really in a position to argue.

“Some creatures in Danafra. Sivu, I believe they are called. As part of a deal with Fliodher we need to rescue as many as we can.”

“I’ve sold…” Lucia shook her head. “Been involved with selling beasts like that before. They’re giant creatures. Very dangerous…”

“Which is what Fliodher said too!” Lux did not share his mother’s pessimism. Quite the opposite, actually. “And I will talk to them and help Uncle Anton to get them to… Where was it again?”

“We’ll tell you later.” Anton smiled. “Just know that your mother will already be there waiting for you, healed and with plenty of food.”

Two stomachs growled at the mere mention of food. Both Lucia and Lux looked extremely worried, terrified almost, that they would alert others to their hunger.

They were never that bad when I left…

“What… What sort of food?” Lux asked, almost sheepishly.

“Everything you could want.” It was not the expected source, Verona, but Axia spoke up. “Lots of meat, vegetables, all the bread you could want. Not to mention Anton’s a really good cook. Oh, and so is Kal.”

Kal felt her ears rise slightly but drew no attention to them. Lux and Lucia shared a look, somewhat positive but Kal saw the very edge of Lux’s short fluffy tail sway back and forth.

“I…” Lucia scratched her short ear. “I’m not sure I can eat that. I… I can’t keep down food very well.” She held her stomach. “If I were to be sick they’d beat me.”

Kal forced herself not to react, to say how horrible it was. She knew it was horrible, she’d experienced it herself, but empty words were not needed. Kal placed her hand onto Lucia’s shoulder and spoke a Healing Prayer aloud. It took a decent amount of mana but it was not as bad as some people. Far better than someone addicted to Purple Shade.

But she’s not anymore. Gods, that must have been hell… Within a hell.

Lucia’s coat had a brighter sheen and luster, several scratches and scars on her ears had disappeared and, most importantly, the scars where the golden piercings had been ripped free were completely gone. Lucia did not care she was essentially naked as she pawed at her body.

“I…”

“Tethra’s magic.” Anton said. “The Goddess of Prayer. She can fix everything and anything…”

Cetina’s face remained flat as she peered behind the curtain.

“Magic…” Lux’s eyes almost sparkled. “That’s so awesome! So awesome! Can you do that too, Uncle Anton?”

“I… Yes. And a few other things. But Kal’s the best at using Tethra’s magic. I’m just using brute force instead of skill.”

Kal felt her tail brush against her back. A simple compliment but a compliment all the same.

“Wow…” Lux’s tail began to beat back and forth furiously. “Fliodher didn’t mention this.”

“I’d really like to know what she actually said to you. But, Kal? Do you want me to heal him, or do you still have enough mana?”

“Better you had. I don’t want to know what happens when I run out.”

When Anton touched Lux’s shoulder Lucia tensed. Kal held her hand as he quickly murmured a healing chant. Lux’s transformation was similar to Lucia’s; a lighter, softer coat and the scratches on his face were gone. Fliodher’s orange Glyph remained.

“Wow. Mum, I don’t feel any aches. And my ear’s feeling better too.”

“Your ear?” Axia asked. She jumped from her lounge in one deft movement, not one Kal expected for a sedentary Mage. “Must have hurt, being so large.”

Lux wasn’t sure what to say. He brought both hands before his chest, nervously tapping his claws together. The soft fur of his hands merged together with every touch.

“Right?” Axia leant forward slightly.

Lux was slightly taller than Axia but now he looked so tiny. His eyes flicked between her and the large Charm on top of her staff. It was not the glittering gemstones that caught his eye but the whole construct. As Axia continued to stare, Lucia grew more anxious.

I wonder if any Beastkin have been used as a Mage's demonstration for destruction? If they wanted a practical demonstration…

"Axia." Kal stretched out her hand. "Lux, and Lucia, aren't like most Beast-kin you've met before. They haven't had the days of travel by ship or over land to get used to talking to Humans or free Beastkin. This morning they probably thought it was going to be any other horrible day. And now everything’s being completely turned on its head. So… Be gentle with them."

"I was certain Fliodher was going to get us free." Lux's nervous tapping slowed. "I really hoped she would…"

"I thought the same with Tethra." Kal smiled at the young boy.

Axia’s eyes softened. "Sorry. I thought you were like… Like everyone else back home. I don't really know anyone my own age…"

Mezot's shoulders dropped.

She's never going to forgive herself, even though it's not her fault.

“Except Sally, but she’s with Ulyaa most of the time.”

"I… Okay." Lux smiled at Axia. "I would love to have some roasted meat. They only gave it to us on special occasions. And even then it was very little."

"And what did they normally give you?"

"Me? Carrots."

Anton barely held back a smile. So too did Axia, but Lux didn't understand and began to worry once again.

"And where is this place?" Lucia asked with a hint of annoyance. "This place you’re taking us. Even in a cart it will take us until well into the morning to get out of Danafra. And they'll recognize me.”

Lucia held her shoulders tight and her body slouched. “I’m sure some of the guards would recognize me. Not from just the sales, but…”

I wonder if we’re going to take control of the inevitable brothels that are going to emerge? Once people get money they’re going to want to spend it. And if they’ve already got food, then they’ll want entertainment. I bet there’s going to be fights once alcohol gets involved.

“That won’t be a problem.” Kal stood up. Lucia followed, her short ears pulled down. Kal placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Trust me. We’re going to your new home right now.”

—[]---

Lucia held Kal’s hand as they stood before the shimmering white portal. She was utterly terrified by the magical disk. She presumed Lucia had seen magic before, and knew just how dangerous even a weak Mage could be. And now she was being asked to step right into it.

“Is this magic?” Lucia pulled close to Kal.

Kal pulled the silver Tethra medallion from underneath her clothes. Lucia’s eyes widened at the sight, Kal hoped at the markings and not at the silver.

“I thought you would have sold that.” Lucia made a pained smile as she rubbed her fingers over the warm metal. “That’s a lot of food…”

“Not for a Half-Breed in Graterious.” Kal tucked it back underneath her clothes. “And I’d never sell it.”

“We won’t be long.” Anton’s voice caused her ears to perk up once again. “Don’t really have the room to bring them home, or feed them if they’re as big as I think they are. So we’ll just pay them off, keep them fed and looked after.”

Lucia was still rather distrustful of Anton, but she was willing to give him a chance because Kal trusted him. And was willingly carrying his child.

This is going to take a long time… How will Rasha react to seeing her? And Marion? Kristof… I don’t think he’ll really care too much. She’s just one face among many. But them…

“We’ll be fine.” Kal gave Anton a quick kiss. “Come back as soon as you can. You’ve got a lesson with Mezot after this. More tests for that new magic of yours. Too much to do in such little time.”

Kal tapped Longinious, still in Anton’s hand, but the woman did not respond. Kal hoped she knew a talking spear would only cause Lucia to stress even more.

Kal pulled Lucia to step onto the shimmering white disk. The next moment they were in a small stone room, one of the many in the Portal Building.

“What…” Lucia staggered to the side, gripping the wall with her extended claws. Clicks followed tiny explosions of white dust from the stone. “Did someone just give me Purple Shade?”

Kal gently rubbed her back. “Everyone’s like that at first. Just breathe slowly and it’ll pass.”

Lucia did as she was bid, taking slow breaths until her body relaxed.

“It’s cold.” Lucia pulled the cloak tighter. “Very cold…”

“We’re not in Seocuria anymore.” Kal opened the wooden door. Beyond were two Human guards, wearing thick cloth gambeson and an equally thick cloak, standing relaxed with their spears resting in the crook of their shoulders. When they saw Kal they straightened up. "Is Rasha not here yet? She's bringing some winter clothes for Lucia."

"The Blue Oni woman's just outside." A guard pointed to the door. "Been there a while, we've told her she can come in but she says she’s happy out there. So we didn’t ask her again.”

Kal let out a faint huff. “Probably waiting for Anton to turn up, so she can make a dramatic entrance and act like she’s just arrived. I don’t understand it.”

“And she’s with Anton too?” Lucia frowned. “And so is Verona, Cetina…”

“Yes. Oh, and Mezot.”

“The blonde…” Lucia blinked. “Are you sure he isn’t from Seocuria? I didn’t think that Graterious people were like that.”

“Did you meet many?” Again Kal regretted her words. “Sorry.”

“A few. But they bought them, us, for sex slaves. Not someone they care about to give a ring to.”

Kal smiled as she touched the ring underneath her glove. “I am glad for that. But I enjoy it. I certainly blame Verona for most of my corruption, but I do. Very nice in these colder days. But I know you don’t want to hear about that.”

Lucia shuddered. “I don’t want to think about any of that stuff, for a very long time.”

I’m all but certain I could use Tethra’s prayer to remove those memories. But that would leave such a huge gap… No. I can just help her through it.

“Kal?”

“Just a wild thought.” Kal smiled. “Don’t worry, it’s just Anton rubbing off on me.” Kal caught the attention of the guards as Lucia began to shiver. “Can you call Rasha in please? There’s no way she hasn’t heard us.”

The guard opened the door, Kal saw Rasha’s armored arm just beyond. He sighed and stepped back. Rasha stooped low to pass underneath the door, nor could she properly stand upright. When she did properly straighten she was almost twice Kal's height. She hoped she’d never have to fight her, Rasha’s forearms were thicker than her waist.

“So…” Rasha’s eyes were narrow, not too dissimilar from Lucia’s but a few moments ago. "They did rescue you. Lucia."

Rasha’s voice was flat and without emotion, given her sheer size it made her more intimidating than she intended. At least Kal presumed that was her intent.

"I…" Lucia did not know what to say. Kal didn't think there was anything right.

Rasha clicked her tongue and handed over a large hessian bag.

"These are your clothes." Rasha waited until Lucia had the bag firmly in her thin arms. "Real clothes. Things that will keep you warm in the snow. Oh, there's boots in the bottom too. Designed for Feline Beast-kin, or so I'm told."

Lucia gave a trembling nod and began to rummage through the clothes, with one hand holding her cloak tight.

"Rasha." Kal said sternly. "You could be a little nicer to her. Please?" Kal felt her ears rise up, along with her bound tail trying to move underneath her shirt. "She’s been through far worse than what we have.”

“You say that…”

Rasha watched as Lucia began to dress herself. The cloth was simple cotton, they would soon have more Arachnid silk than they could possibly use, Kal briefly wondered if Anton considered that, but more than capable of warding off the cold.

“But I can’t just forget how she looked when she was selling us. Or what she said.”

Lucia turned completely rigid, thick pants halfway up her fur covered legs. She refused to look Rasha in the eye, instead unfocused and trembling.

Kal stared at Rasha. Slowly the hostility left her body, her shoulders dropped and her eyes became soft. Softer.

“But you forgave me, after everything that I did to you.” Rasha dropped to one knee to have the same eye level with Lucia. “So I should do the same.”

Lucia looked up. “I wasn’t right in the head. The Purple Shade-”

“They gave it to me too, so don’t try and lie.” Rasha said sternly. “So I know just how far it really affects your thoughts. A fair bit, but not that much.”

Lucia pulled up her pants but continued to look at the floor in perfect silence.

“But that’s all in the past. And if that’s where it’s going to stay, then this is the last time I’ll ever speak of it.”

Lucia pulled her cloak tight. Her head snapped up, no longer meek but determined to meet the face of someone so much stronger than her. Rasha slowly began to smile and gave a slow nod.

“I’m sorry.” Lucia spoke calmly. “I’m sorry for the things I did and said. But I-”

“This is the last time we’ll ever speak about it.” Rasha patted her shoulder, the heavy strike twisted Lucia’s body down but Rasha appeared not to notice. “About all this mess. It’s over now. Besides, Kal wanted to go through all this trouble to get you, so that’s enough for me.”

“I… Thank you.”

Lucia smiled as she pulled out the shirt. She cleared her throat, Rasha still had her hand on her shoulder so she removed it. As she quickly put on the rest of her clothes it gave Kal a moment to think.

Everyone I know, Beast-kin that is, isn’t going to like her straight away. And it’s not like they were ever friends… She can’t spend her entire life here with her son. He’s got to grow as well.

“Would you have rescued me if I hadn’t been bought?” Rasha softly asked. “If you could only get Marion?”

“I…” Kal almost smiled. “What sort of question is that?”

Rasha shrugged. “I don’t know. Just something I thought of.”

At first, no.

“Probably. But you were pretty cheap if I recall.”

“Everyone on that stage was cheap compared to your mother.”

“So many gold coins for the mother of a hated Half-Breed.”

Lucia looked on, worried, but Kal simply smiled and motioned for her to continue. Sometimes dark or glib humor was necessary to keep going. Thankfully it wasn’t in such high demand anymore.

Lucia made sure her clothes were properly fitted. Kal would never speak it aloud but Lucia had certainly dressed better than nearly every Beast-kin before arriving in Atros. Except possibly Marion, when her fatherwas in the right mood.

“These… How long must I work to repay you for this?” Lucia tapped her boots together. They were like Kal’s, slightly shorter than a Human’s with a raised heel to accommodate the shape. She seemed very comfortable in them.

“Nothing." Rasha smiled. "Our Anton’s made sure that everyone works together.”

Not just Anton, far from it, but it makes everything easier to understand.

“And this is nothing.” Rasha frowned lightly. “I don’t mean it like that. But it's yours, for free."

“Will Lux get this too? It’ll be too cold for him here?”

“Husband?” Rasha asked.

“Son. To a Frindal Beast-kin.” Kal took Lucia’s hand. “Guess that makes him one of the Feral Beast-kin that Anton’s looking at recruiting.”

“Feral?” Lucia frowned as the guard opened the door. “What do you mean… I… What?”

Lucia’s jaw dropped when she stepped outside. Kal understood completely why Anton enjoyed seeing this expression. Before her walked Humans, Beast-kin and Dark Elves along with a few Dwarves. It was something Kal had become completely accustomed to but it was a complete shock to Lucia.

“D-Dwarves?” Lucia pulled close, her breath hot against Kal’s face. “Do you think they’ll recognize me?”

“You?”

“Some bought Beast-kin when they sold their weapons to Seocuria. I don’t know what for…” Lucia winced. “I lied. They only bought trained Beast-kin.” Her eye flicked to Rasha. “Only cheap ones too.”

“Not these ones.” Rasha heartily announced. She stood up right now free of the building, towering over everyone in size and presence. “They’re good. Not the bad. Anton has a way of gathering them, doesn’t he?”

“I think the Gods have a decent hand in that.” Kal linked her arm with Lucia. “Come on. Let’s give you a quick tour of Atros.

—[]---

“And this will be your new home.” Kal pushed open the door to the small wooden house. Inside lay basic furnishings, more than any Beast-kin slave could possibly own, outside of being a collaborator. “It’s not much but it’s a start. We’ve even got a second bed for Lux. Later on he can move into a house of his own, but we are rather limited on space for the moment.”

“I…” Lucia gingerly stepped inside. “This is…”

Lucia had remained very quiet during Kal’s brief tour of Atros, escorted by Rasha. While she didn’t know what to say Kal had been rattling off everything she knew about Atros. However, as they neared the end of the tour, something was nagging at the back of Kal’s mind. They had rescued Lucia.

What now?

Kal had only given it a minor amount of thought. She hadn’t truly expected Lucia to be rescued in a single day, though she had absolute trust in Anton and the abilities of Calo and Sheso, and yet the rescue of her mother had taken the same amount of time. Now she was beginning to worry, fret almost, and Lucia was picking it up.

"And so… Um.” Kal scratched her ear, unable to stop the smile on her face. “Yeah. This, this is it. This is most of Atros. I showed you where I live, not everyone in it, since I wanted to show you here first…”

Lucia touched the bed. Her hand pushed some considerable distance down. “I can’t sleep on something so soft. This is far too soft. For me.”

“Oh. Right.” Kal’s face twisted into a pained smile.

Lucia sighed, flexed one hand while rubbing her temple above her ear. “I’m sure Lux wouldn’t mind. He hasn’t been on too many of these things.”

Kal’s first instinct was to ask Lucia to repeat what she had just said but decided not to. Lux seemed normal, for a Beast-kin slave. He might not even understand what happened to him, if he was young enough. The very thought made her skin crawl.

Silence descended upon them once again. Lucia looked at Kal, saw that she didn’t have anything to say, and slowly walked to the other bed. She seemed much happier with that one and gave a small nod.

“No drawers, or cabinets.” Kal spoke softly, motioning to the far side. “Or a chest, for your clothes, but we can buy you… Buy you some. A fire. You’ll definitely need a little brazier here. It’ll be small, and we’ll need to direct the smoke-”

“Um, Kal?” Rasha peered into the room. “Sorry to interrupt, but we’ve got someone to see you both.”

Kal scrunched her eyes tight, somewhat glad to be interrupted, and ushered Lucia outside. Outside stood someone she didn’t expect. Marion, wearing thick and warm clothes, stood beside Rasha, her arms folded and tail hanging straight between her legs. Rasha nervously scratched her head as she stepped to the side.

Lucia winced when she recognized Marion. She did not shy away.

“My daughter did actually rescue you.” Marion spoke very softly and calmly. “I haven’t forgotten what you said the day I was sold…”

Before Lucia could react Marion grabbed her and pulled her into a deep hug. “And I’m so glad you’re safe."

"But I," Lucia's arms were almost sticking out at right angles, her tail tucked tight between her legs. She didn't even seem to care that her face was buried in Marion's chest. "But I sold you. Tried everything to raise your price-"

"Oh you stupid girl." Marion placed her down, brushing away the snow from Lucia's hood. "If it wasn't you it would have been someone else. Besides, I know you were my daughter's friend, so you must be a good person somewhere in there."

"I… Hope so." Lucia looked away. “I don’t think I deserve so much good.”

Marion gave Lucia's shoulder a hearty slap. "None of that. Judging by how Rasha's looking you've already been given the speech about how everything’s forgiven?"

Rasha did have a certain expression, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.

"Good. Saves me the trouble.” Marion held her shoulder. "But you're safe here."

Lucia managed an awkward smile. "I thought you were going to hit me."

"There's no point." Marion shrugged. "But you'll have to keep your wits about you… Kal, did you do that healy thing on her? Get rid of that Purple Shade stuff?"

A shiver ran down both Lucia and Rasha.

"While we were still in Danafra." Kal ran a hand over Lucia's ear. It twitched away but involuntarily. "She's very tough, to endure the withdrawals and stay sane."

Marion folded her arms. "Well, you're going to need that strength. I don't know what my daughter or Anton has told you but Atros isn't the perfect paradise he made it out to be."

"He never did." Kal said softly. "Only that we could be free here."

"Regardless, you'll need to keep aware of what's happening around you at all times. There are some Beast-kin here that aren't happy there are Half-Breed's amongst us, even Rasha isn't a good one in their minds."

"Those Puritans?" Lucia gripped her shoulders. "They're here too?" She looked at Rasha then at Kal. "And you two-"

"They're not going to do anything to me." Rasha thumped her chest armor with her closed fist. "I'd punch their heads off before they'd get close. You don't need to worry about us."

"But my son isn't-"

"We're keeping a very close eye on them." Kal held her shoulder. "They know that Anton’s aware of them. Honestly? I don't think there's more than a few in a city of several thousand."

I certainly hope so. They'll hate me and my child.

Kal scanned those nearby walking through the snow. Most were too focused on traveling to somewhere warm, but she saw one giving them a dirty look. They were gone before Kal could even see if they were a Beast-kin or Human.

Always need to remind myself that not every Human’s as nice, as accepting, as Anton and Verona were initially. It’ll be difficult for them to just let go of everything they’ve been taught.

"Them aside, there's also the Beast-kin that will recognize you from Danafra. They…" Marion sighed. "They might not be too happy to see you're here, alive and well."

"Is… Is there anywhere else we could live?" Lucia pursed her lips. "Somewhere without all this."

Kal held her shoulder while throwing her mother an angry glare. For the tiniest moment Marion pulled back, before dismissively shrugging. As if to say she deserves to know the truth.

"You'll be safe here." Kal held Lucia's hand. It trembled in her own. "We'll have guards posted outside for the foreseeable future, Humans that we know are good and won't care what you did in Danafra."

"Okay." Lucia was still not entirely convinced. "I'll do my best. You did free me." She smiled. "Not like I have much of a choice, now do I?"

"Of course you do." Marion smiled, flashing her sharp teeth. "You could always go back to Danafra if you want."

"Mother! What is wrong with you?!"

Marion scoffed, the corner of her lips quickly curled into a smile. "Of course I'm not being serious, Kal. Honestly, when that Anton of yours isn't around you act a lot cuter, when you don’t have to be so strong and stoic and can just be yourself. Did you know that?"

Kal knew her mother was just teasing her, trying to get a rise out of her or her tail, at least she hoped she was. Just like she hoped it wasn't true. Being cute wasn't something she ever aspired to be. Strength was something she needed to survive for nearly twenty cycles on her own, not ever a choice.

I'm not ugly, I know that, and I love my tail, but I'm not really…

Kal’s thoughts were halted by a faint laughing, almost like ringing bells. Hearing it made Kal's heart warm. Lucia was laughing, holding the back of her hand to her mouth while her eyes were scrunched tight.

"It's been so long, but I never forgot you two bickering like this. To see, to hear it again. It’s a wonderful thing."

Rasha gave a tiny shrug.

"I don't remember anything like that." Kal looked away, but she could remember scant memories, like tiny flickers of flame. When she looked back Marion was smiling. "Okay. Whatever."

Kal twisted her body and felt something on her hips. Two somethings. That she had carried for a very, very long time. So long that sometimes she even forgot she had them. But not now.

"Have they given you anything to eat?" Rasha asked, leaning forward. "You definitely need something in that skinny belly of yours."

"How much do you eat?"

"Zuhura’s a good cook. Brilliant, actually. Loves using all these orange and yellow powders. Tastes great." Rasha pointed towards their home, obscured by the snow-capped houses. "Kal's a great cook too, of course. She'll have finished prepping for lunch and be working on all that economic stuff Anton promised."

Rasha's large ears flicked back. "Oh. Did you know the United Empire used paper as their money? No metal coins, rings or plates. Just paper. Special paper of course, with numbers and pictures on them. I have some in my room. Would you like to see them? I don't think anyone in Atros, or even the world, has anything like it."

Both Lucia and Marion were slightly overwhelmed by the usually stoic and calm Rasha rattling off words faster than a magic obsessed Mezot. Kal raised her hand to save them, and felt the weight on her hip once again.

"Before we do that, I have one last thing to show Lucia." Kal took Lucia's arm in her own. "Don't worry. It's nothing serious. Could you two come with me as well?"

---[]---

Kal brought them a section of the outermost northern wall. Being the latest in Atros's fortifications it was built tall and with stone, stone from the Dragon Guard Dwarves expansion of the old Hold beneath Mount Aspire, but stone was stone. It was also significantly taller than the last and afforded great visibility over the rolling fields to the north and the city itself. Kal had found it quite relaxing to visit the wall when she needed to stretch her legs.

"Here's a great spot." Kal said. "Something the guards have put together during the winter. No point in being frozen while the watching the snow."

A simple shelter covered a small section of the wall, including a half dozen chairs and a metal brazier in the center. The fire had long receded but it would not be long before it roared once again. Beyond the shelter were a couple of guards, clearly cold with their coats coated with a thin layer of snow. They eyed their approach suspiciously, only relaxing once they recognized Kal and gave a half-hearted wave.

"I've walked this way enough times for them to know me." Kal ushered them forward. "They won't mind."

Rasha lent down, her short red braids rolling across her neck. "Are you sure that's wise? Taking walks on your own with all the stuff happening?"

"I do usually have Verona with me. And it's only been a few times, honestly. And usually you've been busy helping the builders and Dwarves lifting heavy things when I do it."

Rasha smiled as she straightened up. "No one's stronger than me in Atros. Don't… Maybe I should ask Lucia about Oni’s."

Rasha and Kal shared a frown.

"Maybe later." Kal smiled. "When the memories of Seocuria aren't so fresh in her mind."

How the hell am I going to explain the Seocurian refugees? Better hear it from me rather than see one and freak out.

Lucia and Marion had already taken their seas. Several thick pelts had been left by the soldiers, covered in snow now, but still more than capable of keeping them warm. Kal took her seat, Rasha elected to stand and not risk embarrassment.

"Is it normal to feel nice even when you're so cold?" Lucia pulled her cloak tighter. She didn't wait for a response before pointing towards Atros. "It is a lovely white. Almost like my fur…"

Kal cleared her throat, gaining their attention. There was a reason why she had brought them here.

"I don't have much from Danafra. Only my medallion, and these."

Kal drew both of the simple iron daggers she always kept with her. The lightly rusted iron reflected strangely in the light, accentuating the shiny metal that remained.

“I haven’t let go of these since I left Danafra.” She placed them on her lap and stared at the two blades. “It’s been a very long time…”

Both blades were so familiar that they were essentially another part of her. Another limb, in a way. So many people, Humans, Beast-kin and uncountable animals had died to them. If they could be cursed they would be bursting with hatred.

Curses are definitely Ferula’s thing. Those Strega Witches and Cetina's hates green smoke. I wonder if that young apprentice girl is alright. She was burned very, very badly…

Kal blinked hard before looking up. “One of them is for my father.” Kal tapped one, rocking the handle back and forth. “I spent nearly ten cycles thinking, planning, how to find and kill him. Driving this blade into his chest and watching him drown in his own blood.”

Lucia looked on worried, Rasha and Marion shared a concerned glance.

“But I couldn’t. He was always surrounded by dozens of guards, even at night. There was no way I could possibly kill him.” Kal sheathed the blade. “So I eventually gave up. I didn’t have a better plan, so I just started wandering. Stealing, thieving. Eventually I ended up in Graterious… Then here, eventually.”

Lucia looked out from the shelter. Snow covered Atros was a beautiful sight to her; the faint lines of smoke rising into the pale sky and watching the multitude of people still traveling the streets despite the cold.

“And the second?” Rasha asked. Despite being so large she could speak incredibly softly at times.

Kal took a slow breath. “I never could forget what you did for me, Lucia. When I broke the vase in R… His, mansion, after every mistake I’d done, not to mention that I was nearing child bearing age and I knew that he wanted to make a Quarter-Breed.”

Marion moved uncomfortably in her chair, pulling the cloak tighter against her aqua fur.

“I didn’t have Tethra’s ability then. I… I thought you’d stay just like you were on that stage. Those crazed eyes and slathering devotion to the Seocurian Slavers.” Kal’s words brought Lucia to the brink of tears. Lucia wasn’t stupid, she had guessed why the blade was intended for her. “I didn’t even think of trying to rescue you. I could barely take care of myself, stealing food and catching rats. There’s no way that I could have looked after you while you worked all the Purple Shade out of your body. Not to mention you’d probably have turned me in for another hit of that awful stuff…”

Lucia looked away, unable to meet her gaze.

That was a bit much, but I’m sure it would have been true for me.

“But now that you’re here, safe in Atros” Kal waited until Lucia was looking at her. “So I don't have any need of it. I have far, far better blades that I can use. Rasha? Could you please break this? On the steps if you need it.”

Rasha was more than hesitant to take one of the blades. Beast-kin didn’t normally have anything to call their own, even the rough cloth their Maters gave them wasn’t truly theirs, so stealing or breaking another's possessions was tantamount to war. Still, Rasha did as she was asked. She gripped the blade tight and pulled down. The old metal resisted until a tiny click emanated. Rasha pulled her hands apart, the rusted knife was clearly broken in half, the edge white from the sudden strain.

"I didn't think you were that strong." Lucia whispered. "I'm surprised those Reptiles tried to attack you."

"I'm a lot stronger now." Rasha slapped her forearm. "Getting so much more food and rest is doing wonders for me, just like it will you. That's one of the best things about this place. One of…”

Lucia frowned as Rasha trailed off.

“We’ll send that to the forge.” Kal held her hand for Rasha to return the broken knife. “There’s no point in metal being wasted.”

“So… That’s why you saved us?” Lucia’s eyes narrowed. “So you could feel better about yourself? Do you not-”

Kal immediately stood up, the chair groaned on the wooden floor and stopped Lucia dead. The faint thump of her fur cloak landing on the snow was deafeningly loud. Her eyes were wide with terror, even Rasha and Marion were worried. Before Lucia could respond Kal leant down and gave her a tight hug.

“Please don’t think like that.” Kal spoke softly into her ear. “Please don’t. I wanted you free like I want every Beast-kin free. And I owe you my life. Surely that’s more than enough to do the right thing?”

Lucia choked down her tears as Kal parted. “I’m sorr-”

“It’s… You have nothing to apologize for.” Kal placed the knife parts on the floor. “I was like this when I arrived. Terrified of nearly everything and everyone. Apologizing for things beyond my control, in my heart long after I stopped speaking them. But it’ll be better for you. We’re here, Lux will be too, and most of Anton’s friends are really nice.”

“Most?” Marion frowned at her daughter.

Kal smirked. “Irso can be a little prickly.”

“She’s here too?” Lucia managed a dry chuckle. “So… I can’t believe it.”

“So what are you going to do here?” Rasha retook her seat. “I, um, don’t want to sound rude, but we all need to work to help Atros-”

“Perhaps another time, Rasha.” Marion gave Rasha’s large hand a gentle pat. “Lucia’s going to need time to recover, even if my Kal has healed her body. Her heart will take longer.”

“I…” Lucia closed her eyes. “I honestly have no idea. This morning I thought I’d have to seduce a guard for some Purple Shade. Just another dose is what I wanted, just a few grains and I'd have done anything. Now… Just nothing to do with my work. Nothing like that, not at all please.”

“I remember you were very skilled with your…” Marion’s right eye twitched. “Nimble with your hands. The seamstresses of Atros always need help. And they’re mostly women too. So you won’t have to worry about men getting too close. Oh, and you’ll see Ulyaa most days. She’s training to become a Principle Mage as well, along with that girl from the south. The first Beast-kin Principle Mage of Atros. Did I get that right, Kal? All the different types of magic are a little confusing to me.”

There’s also whatever Longinious’s type of magic is too.

“I… I think that would be nice.” Lucia raised her hands. Her feline claws extended as she flexed her hands. “Something, something simple and nice. At least to start with. Would… Would that be alright?”

“Of course, Lucia.” Kal held her hand. “No one is going to tell you what to do ever again. Not even Anton. I promise you that.”

Kal knew that wasn’t entirely true but it was what Lucia needed to hear. Lucia smiled and looked out over Atros once again. This time she looked calm, not exactly serene but very close. It may take some time for her to relax, to settle down and not just know but truly understand that she and her son were safe. Kal hadn’t expected Lucia to immediately act like her but this quiet simple moment, the tiny snowflakes drifting underneath the roof and landing on her face. Lucia smiled and brushed them away, nestling herself deeper into her chair. Simply seeing her relaxed was enough for Kal, for that is what she always wanted for Lucia. Something that she had never been. To be free.
