11. Who Are You

Luna found it extremely tiring and difficult to keep breathing. It was also becoming cold and dark. Her body was so sluggish she could not move. There was a strong temptation to just go to sleep.

“PLEASE DON’T DIE!”

Erica’s desperate plea cut through her consciousness and reminded her of the reason for her current state.

Luna stubbornly willed herself to move her sluggish mouth. She must warn them. She must. He desperation and pain unknowingly brought tears to her eyes, as she managed to squeeze out the words, “Ignore... Victor... Rina... Lucas... Family's... Downfall... Please..."

While the darkness claimed her, she briefly wondered if she had managed to get it out and if Erica had heard her.

“BIG SIS!!!” Erica wailed at the top of her voice.

"LUNA!" Desmond's voice reverberated throughout the area at the same time.

He was about to climb the staircase to the art room when he noticed a small crowd at the entrance to the building.

Through the crowd, he caught glimpses of a pair of awfully familiar looking girls. He did not like it, because one of them was covered in blood.

Just to be sure, he ran towards the crowd.

As soon as he was close enough to recognise them as his beloved sisters, his heart shattered.

Having been trained for such situations, Desmond retained enough of his senses to immediately call for an ambulance. Then, he ordered Erica to call their parents and did first aid on Luna.

Luna’s eyes opened. She blinked her eyes slowly several times. Her mind was a little foggy and her body was incredibly light. This weightlessness was a little unnerving but nice at the same time.

‘I can’t see...’

An endless stretch of darkness expanded before her. It could have made the fears of any claustrophobic person act up.

‘No, there’s something...’ Her gaze shifted down, towards the soft glow of light. However, it was her body. She was naked and glowing.

‘This...’

She looked around again, before she inspected her body once more.

‘Am I finally dead?’

[For the moment you are.] A deep voice that reverberated through her core suddenly spoke.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Her shoulders jumped in shock, and she looked around but could not find the source of the voice.

[Do you wish to live?] The same deep voice asked her.

Luna remained speechless for a while.

‘...Is this God?’

[No, but I am an entity beyond your understanding. You may think of me however you'd like.]

Luna froze. She had not voiced her question. How did he answer her? Could he read her mind?

[Yes. Now, answer the question, do you wish to live?]

"... No?"

There was an unexpected pause.

[You wish to die then?]

"... Not exactly either."

This time, a long silence dragged out.

Just as Luna wondered if she was left alone to float here forever, the voice spoke again. [What do you want then?]

"I don't know...” Luna frowned slightly. She had never really thought of it before.

[Think about it then!]

Luna’s frown deepened. She had spent her entire life trying to be the person her family could be proud of. The only desires she remembered having were always related to her family and their happiness. So, now that she was dead and had no desire to return...

“I can’t think of anything...” She honestly admitted.

[How is that possible? There must be something that you want. Think harder, then answer me again!] The voice cracked a little in its exasperation revealing a tiny immaturity behind the voice.

“...” Luna tried to think of the regrets she had in her life. “Could you make my family happy?”

[So, you want to live then!]

"No. I mean, could you erase my family's memories of me?"

[What? I can't do that.]

"Oh. Never mind then." Luna was shooting in the dark anyway. After another dragged out silence, she asked, "Do I really have to think of something?"

[Yes!] The entity was clearly frustrated with her now. [To think I was told that this would be the easiest part to handle about hosts...]

The soft grumbling piqued her curiosity and gave Luna an idea. “Can I learn about who you are and what’s going to happen to me?”

[… Do you mean you wish to be all-knowing?]

“You could say that.” She shrugged to get things moving. Otherwise, they could be stuck on this question forever.

[How interesting! You're like us!]

Luna's eyes rounded in surprise. The voice was no longer deep and powerful but young and immature.

[Hm, maybe that explains why the standard greeting didn't work on you. In that case, let's get down to business! I'm a system and you're my host.] The voice now sounded lively and enthusiastic.

‘System? Host?’ These questions popped in her head while the being that called itself a system rambled on.

[When you died, I bound with your soul before it found a suitable new life in your world to inhabit. Now, you'll be transmigrated into the different Legacy Worlds together with me to complete missions.]

‘Bound with my soul? New life? Transmigrated? Legacy worlds?’

"What mis-"

[Each time you successfully clear a world, you can earn more knowledge! How about that?]

"Wait, how do you-"

[Hm, you're the first host to input attainment of knowledge as a goal. This means the end of your transmigrations would be whenever you become an all-knowing being, which will be impossible. I mean, look at us! You’re the same as us and we’re here indefinitely! I wonder if this means that we’ll be together for however long you survive?]

“Survi-?”

Its laughter cut her off and it continued to ramble on about how it looked forward to the countless years they could spend together and how novel this experience would be.

"I don't- No, wai-"

[Oh well, we'll figure things out along the way. Let's head on to our first world!]

"Wha-?!"

There was a stabbing sensation in her chest before she was roughly yanked forth by her chest. It felt like she was pulled and forced through a tiny hole that mushed her up.

Luna eventually passed out from the excruciating pain.
