As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and gold, Ba Gấu lay in the cramped room, his silence heavier than the cleavers hanging above. The children's laughter, the sting of the pebble, Dũng's teasing – they were all distant echoes, mere whispers compared to the roar of his internal battle. He was home, yet a stranger in his own skin, the weight of his secret a burden he couldn't share, a battle he had to fight alone.
The night stretched before him, long and uncertain, a stark mirror to the turmoil within. And as the moon cast its pale light on the dusty room, Ba Gấu knew one thing for sure – the scars of this journey, both physical and emotional, were just beginning to show. And only time would tell if he could emerge from the shadows, whole or broken, a warrior or a victim of his own choices.
act 2
chapter 9 act 1 part 2 of 3
The butcher stall's back room, usually a haven of silence and solitude, was now a battlefield of Ba Gấu's thoughts. The ingredients for the cure, once symbols of hope, now lay scattered on the cot like a deck of bad fortune. Each vial, each leaf, pulsed with a potential he couldn't ignore.
His mind, a restless beast, paced along the labyrinthine paths of possibility. He could sell them, of course, fetch a hefty price for these rare treasures. But the thought of their potent power falling into the wrong hands, fueling someone else's ambition, sent a shiver down his spine.
He could hoard them, jealously guarding their secrets, a self-appointed dragon atop a mountain of magic. But isolation had never been his friend, and the loneliness of such a path chilled him to the bone.
He could use them on himself, experiment with their potency, push the boundaries of his own strength and knowledge. The allure of power, the whisper of immortality, danced at the edge of his mind, a siren song tempting him onto a treacherous reef.
But each path, as he considered it, felt like a betrayal. A betrayal of Cat, his friend, his brother in arms, who lay now in the clutches of Dr. Fang's synthetic promises. A betrayal of his own values, his commitment to harnessing nature's bounty for good, not for personal gain.
He slammed his fist on the cot, the sound echoing in the small room like a gunshot. The indecision, the paralysis of choice, was his true enemy. It was a monster he'd battled before, and always emerged from the fray battered but unbroken.
But this time, the scars felt deeper, the weariness more profound. He was a warrior, yes, but one with a cracked shield and a dulled blade. He needed a spark, a purpose beyond the ashes of his shattered mission.
And so, with a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world, Ba Gấu decided to return home. Not to the haven it once was, but to the den of vipers it had become. He knew Mai, his wife, and Dũng his brother-in-law, harbored a secret resentment towards him, a simmering pot of anger fueled by whispers and misplaced blame.
But he was a man of the storm, and he wouldn't hide from their spiteful drizzle. He would face them, not with anger, but with a quiet resolve. Perhaps, in the crucible of their disdain, he would find the fire he needed, the forge that would hammer his indecision into a weapon of purpose.
As he stepped out of the butcher stall, the setting sun casting long shadows across the market square, he knew his journey was far from over. He had stumbled, lost his way, but the path was still there, waiting to be rediscovered. And somewhere within him, beneath the layers of doubt and disappointment, a spark still flickered. A spark that, with time and courage, could ignite a fire that would not only heal his wounds but illuminate the path ahead.

But for now, he walked towards the looming shadow of his home, ready to face the storm brewing within its walls. He would not be a victim of their wishes, not a ghost haunting his own life. He would be the storm, and they would learn to weather it.
The next ten chapters would be a crucible for Ba Gấu. He would be tested, tempted, and broken down. He would chase mirages of purpose, seeking solace in external validation and fleeting power. But through it all, the embers of his true strength would glow, waiting to be fanned into a blaze.
And as he delved deeper into the labyrinth of his own desires, he would slowly begin to see the reflection of his own worth staring back at him. He would realize that the missing piece of his life wasn't a grand purpose or a powerful elixir, but the quiet strength that resided within him all along.
The journey would be long, the path fraught with peril. But when he finally emerged from the shadows, he would be a changed dog. A Cẩu Binh who no longer needed to seek validation from others, a Cẩu Binh whose purpose was woven into the fabric of his own being. And in that moment, he would truly understand that the greatest treasure he ever possessed was the one he had always carried within himself.
act 3
chapter 9 act 1 part 3 of 3:
Ba Gấu took his time walking up the threshold of his family home. The open style foyer allowed anyone to see who was available to greet them and, as was the case here, when no one was around, a guest could call out loudly and be attended to by a member of the family. Ba Gấu had long ago learned that no one in his wife's family would come when he called. walked toward the back to his little private room, but as he passed the 1st floor kitchen he noticed that his knife rack was missing it held his highest quality knives, even better than the knives he used to cut meat for his customers. and his cutting board, it was 3 inches thick made of the rarest hardwood, it was gone! Before he met Linh, the bratty pup, he might've let this go without question. Even though no one respected him in this house, it was still HIS house and those items belonged in their place. The family doesn’t have to appreciate everything he does for them, using his energy constantly to keep his Alpha path skill “Pack Wisdom” activated to increase their mind power and bolster all their weaknesses. Ba Gấu barked out Mai’s name. There was violence in the sound, with such force to shake everyone in the house. Mai was rolling in a rose petal bath when the call came and all but made her jump out of the bath and come running. Her mother possessed a more acute sense of spite and was able to stop her daughter from listening to that good-for-nothing husband.”you focus on smelling nice for your date with Mo Gang.” her mother consoled. Mai asked in fear, “but if he’s alive , we lose the house, and my businesses, and Mo Gang is from a rich, prestigious conglomerate. His Father barely agreed to allow him this 1 date because I’m supposed to be a childless, sexless widow! That loser coming back ruins everything!” Mom ambles down the stairs with a sneer. “Oh Ba Gấu. you’re alive. What a pity. Get out of this house. You don’t -” Ba Gấu cut her off forcefully, “Where are my Teeth of Eternity knives and red wood cutting board?” Mom stammered, “I , we, uh , When you died, we sold them . we needed the money to support ourselves.” Ba Gấu retorted, “YOU own the pawnshop Mother in law. Mai has two clothing stores. Sister gets income from her husband’s bank, Even Dũng is a partner in some market stalls.” “What nonsense. You were the male of the house but you barely made any gold! You were a lazy layabout and honestly I’m glad you’re dead.” “Old bitch what are you saying, I’m not dead.” “Just get out of here ghost. We don’t want you here! We’ve moving on with our lives.” Ba Gấu was bewildered. Why would they do this? He made to find out from his wife. “don’t disturb Mai, you will upset her. She’s already found a real Cẩu Binh. one that can actually support her and please her. She’s got a new dog who isn’t a fat ugly bastard!” Ba Gấu stopped in his tracks. He knew Mai was unhappy, He had been apathetic for a long time, and he really had become an unnattractive shadow of the Cẩu Binh he once was. He just needed Mai’s confirmation. “Mai” he yelled up the stairs for her to hear through the closed bedroom door. “Is it true? Have you moved on? I know I let you down but I swear I’m back. I will improve, we will be able to love each other again.” Mai remembered Ba Gấu before he was drafted into the war . He was so full of life and a respected member of the community. He used to be a good supportive husband. He funded her flagship clothing store, He used his savings and bought this house for her and her family. She almost wavered till he said, “In my travels I met this kid, a precocious little pup and I realized it’s time for us to have a litter.” Mai cradled her own belly. “I already have some little ones inside me. They aren’t yours. Now get out.” She added an icy edge to her words. Ba Gấu was crushed. He couldn’t decide if he should weep or murder the next 10 people within reach. Mother in law Het sneered, Sister Lily laughed audibly from her doorway. She loved to see the enmity between Ba Gấu and Mai. Ba Gấu trudged back outside, Mom added an extra stab to his heart, “Don’t go back to MY butcher stall, fatty, or I’ll have you arrested.” Ba Gấu ignored her and walked back downstairs to his kitchen storage area. He needs the comfort of something steady and familiar to shake off the blow from this revelation.
